Matt Stevens walked away from his first closing table controlling two duplexes, having put nothing down, holding a check for forty seven hundred dollars. That deal taught him that things he assumed were impossible were actually available to him, and it started a career built on reading structure before reading price. Known as The Franchise Guy, Matt has more than 30 years in the franchise industry and has sat in nearly every seat at the table. He has been a franchisee, a franchise coach, a franchisor, and now a franchise consultant. He was rookie franchisee of the year, turned around struggling divisions, and served as a board member and partner inside a two billion dollar franchise group. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: How to evaluate a franchise opportunity beyond the investment number, why first rights of refusal have essentially disappeared from franchise agreements, how territory math changes the economics of multi-unit ownership, the behavioral due diligence most candidates never perform on themselves, and where the real growth is happening in franchising right now. MATT'S JOURNEY: Matt got into franchising by reading an advertisement on a hallway wall at Wake Forest University. He joined the business that became CertaPro Painters when there were only 67 operators across Canada, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic. The deal had a zero dollar investment to get in and a 25 percent royalty on the back end, a trade both sides made deliberately. He spent about ten years in that system, moving from operator to coach to the franchisor side. Before franchising, Matt spent nearly two decades in rental property, building to 14 units before selling his last property in 2017. Over one six year stretch in franchising, he found, recruited, signed, trained, and mentored 167 franchise owners across nine states in a single system. Today he helps candidates cut through franchise marketing using non-public research on franchisors, their development teams, and their existing owners. KEY INSIGHTS: Every piece of human behavior is driven by inputs and outcomes rather than rationale or common sense. Matt was frustrated by several franchisor decisions when he was an owner. Once he became a franchisor, those same decisions made complete sense. His advice to candidates is to assume every rule exists for a reason and to ask why. First rights of refusal on territory used to be common in franchising and are now essentially gone. Matt's read is that the only reason a franchisor offers one today is that they are desperate to sign that candidate. What replaced it is a growth schedule tied to what an operator can realistically execute. Territory secured early is what Matt calls growth insurance. One territory costs X, three cost roughly 1.6X, and five cost roughly 2.2X, and six territories can be serviced with the same phone number and van as one. In fast moving markets, what is available today will not be available later. The hardest due diligence is the kind candidates perform on themselves. Investment and territory are confirmable. What is not confirmable is whether a person will replicate the daily behavioral patterns the system requires. One of Matt's screening questions is how long a candidate can go at zero income before hitting the panic button. The least appreciated opportunity in franchising is the mundane service business. Matt's framing is that in a market with 400 competitors within 30 miles, you are not competing against 400 companies. You are competing against the two others the customer called. That is how he became the largest buyer at his Sherwin Williams store in Keene, New Hampshire by May of his first year in the painting business at age 20. On this episode of The Ty Brady Way, Ty sits down with Matt Stevens, known simply as The Franchise Guy. Matt has spent 25 years as a franchise consultant flying the flag with FranChoice, an international group of franchise professionals who help people find the right business opportunity without the guesswork. Before that, he spent years inside the franchise world itself, starting as a young guy running a painting business in New Hampshire in 1988, working his way up to franchise development roles, and flying around the country for years before realizing he was missing his daughter's childhood in the process. That wake-up call led him to where he is now, and he hasn't looked back. The story that sets the tone for this whole conversation starts in the cold. Matt was running his painting franchise in southwestern New Hampshire, and leads were thin. No direct mail, no digital marketing, just door knocking and yard signs. So he made a decision: every weekend, he would cold call houses until he had 10 estimates scheduled. He did that for months straight, in February, March, and April, walking streets in a short sleeve shirt in mid-fifty-degree weather because he was moving fast enough to stay warm. He never left a Sunday night without those 10 appointments. That year he won rookie of the year for the Northern New England division. He credits two things: fear and pride. He had given up a baseball summer to run a business, and he was not going home empty-handed. Ty and Matt get into what actually separates the top performers in franchising from everyone else. Matt calls it exercising your ABs: Attitude, Ambition, Behavior, and Skill. But the fifth element, the one most people miss, is Engagement. He learned that the hard way in 1988 when he spent hundreds of hours solving problems on his own that a single phone call to a neighboring franchisee could have answered in ten minutes. The whole point of a franchise system is that you are not doing it alone. You paid for the knowledge of everyone who came before you. Not using it is like buying a map and refusing to open it. One of the most practical parts of this conversation is Matt's take on the single biggest mistake people make when looking at franchises: turning assumptions into conclusions. Someone sees a franchise advertised for $70,000 and assumes that's the total investment. Someone else assumes they need millions to get started. Matt placed a candidate who got into a franchise for $15,000 cash, borrowed another $50,000, built it for seven years, and retired. The numbers are almost never what people assume, and a few honest conversations can change everything. Matt also walks through how he structures his days when things are clicking: one consultation, one introduction, and consistent marketing activity every single day. He sets aside time rather than chasing a number, because he knows that some days one hour of marketing produces five appointments and some days it produces zero. The activity is what matters. He calls it butt in seat, and it's the same principle whether you're trying to lose weight, renovate a room, or build a business. The story that closes this episode is one Matt has carried with him for fifteen years. A friend got downsized from a $200,000 executive role and came to Matt looking for a business. He found the right opportunity, but hesitated too long and someone else grabbed it. He started over with a second option. Then the person who bought the first opportunity had a serious health issue and had to sell, and Matt called his friend and said, this is yours if you want it, pennies on the dollar. His friend bought both businesses. He has been franchisee of the year in both national systems and is still going strong fifteen years later. That's the kind of outcome that keeps Matt doing what he does. His legacy is simple: do the right thing, and trust that one person can do what another person has already done. You just have to know what that person actually did to get there.

Matt Stevens transitioned from the U.S. Navy in 2017 after serving for 26 years as a SEAL.Transitioning from the SEAL teams to civilian life brought him to The Honor Foundation, a national nonprofit dedicated to supporting U.S. Special Operations Forces as they transition from elite military careers into impactful civilian roles. Matt attended The Honor Foundation's (THF) inaugural East Coast class in the spring of 2016, joined their SOF Advisory Board in the spring of 2017, and then joined their Board of Directors in February 2018. A native of Charlotte, NC, Matt graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1991 with a B.S. in Ocean Engineering. He graduated BUD/S in 1992 with class 179 and was assigned to the East Coast, where he served in various SEAL Teams, SEAL Delivery Vehicle Teams, and Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG).Matt commanded at every level in the Naval Special Warfare Community, including a Squadron at DEVGRU, SEAL Team Two, Naval Special Warfare Unit Three, and Naval Special Warfare Group Four. He served on staff tours at the Joint Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as the Operations Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group TWO in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (ASD SO/LIC) in the Pentagon. On the evening of October 9, 1983, twenty-three-year-old Timothy Coggins met up with some friends for a night out at the People's Choice club, a popular night club in Griffin, Georgia, a rural area about forty-five minutes outside of Atlanta. When Tim didn't return home the next day, his family assumed he'd stayed at a friend's house, as he often did on nights he stayed out late. Those assumptions were shattered one day later, when investigators showed up at the Coggins' front door carrying a photograph of what would be identified as Tim's dead, mutilated body.At first, local investigators assured the Coggins family they would find whoever was responsible for Tim's brutal murder; however, within just a couple weeks, it was clear they didn't have any leads or evidence, nor did they seem all that interested in investigating Tim's death. Eventually, the months passed into years and the case went completely cold and Tim's family lost any hope of his killers being brought to justice. Then, more than three decades after his death, investigators contacted the Coggins family and told them they'd found the men responsible for Tim's death.Timothy Coggins' story is yet another reminder of how in many parts of the United States, the hideous beliefs of a bygone era are still alive and well, devastating families and perverting the justice system.
