Pastor and author Tim Challies joins the podcast to discuss his book Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God. We use the opportunity to talk about how we can train those in our youth ministry how to suffer well. If we haven't taught a deep theology of suffering to our teenagers, then they can be blindsided later in life when suffering comes. Tim describes how walking with faith through suffering is an opportunity to steward the suffering that God has given for us. Suffering is an inevitable part of life in general, and particularly of the life of a Christian, so we must do our part to equip our students biblically with a proper view of God's sovereignty in suffering.

How do we take the immense heartaches we experience and use them for God's glory? How do we continue to trust in the Lord's goodness when our experience feels quite the opposite in our pain? For author Tim Challies, losing his 20 year old son tragically and unexpectedly gave him the opportunity to lean into all he believed to be true about God as he resolved to steward his sorrow well. Through his writing of his book, Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God, Tim gave a real-time account of his grieving process and his ultimate conclusion that God was still good and the provider of comfort even in our greatest losses. His writing was not only a way for his own heart to process and heal, but it has become a beacon of hope to so many others encountering their own sorrows and pain. In this episode, Tim sits down with Aubrey to discuss what it looks like to lead our family through pain when we too are enduring it, how writing can be a helpful part of healing and the importance of knowing our true identity in the face of our losses. Losing a child is an agonizing and heartbreaking experience and yet Tim's reminder to all of us, whether we have known that kind of pain or not, is that God is our ultimate comfort. In today's episode, Becket talks with pastor and author, Tim Challies, about his book, “Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God.” On November 3, 2020, Tim and Aileen Challies received the shocking news that their son Nick had died. A twenty-year-old student at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, he had been participating in a school activity with his fiancée, sister, and friends, when he fell unconscious and collapsed to the ground. Neither students nor a passing doctor nor paramedics were able to revive him. His parents received the news at their home in Toronto and immediately departed for Louisville to be together as a family. While on the plane, Tim, an author and blogger, began to process his loss through writing. In Seasons of Sorrow, Tim shares real-time reflections from the first year of grief—through the seasons from fall to summer—introducing readers to what he describes as the “ministry of sorrow.” Seasons of Sorrow will benefit both those that are working through sorrow or those comforting others:• See how God is sovereign over loss and that he is good in loss• Discover how you can pass through times of grief while keeping your faith• Learn how biblical doctrine can work itself out even in life's most difficult situations• Understand how it is possible to love God more after loss than you loved him before Tim's Website: https://www.challies.com/ Buy Tim's Book "Seasons of Sorrow" here: https://amzn.to/3xLn0sQ The Becket Cook Show Ep. 114This Episode of The Becket Cook Show is available on YouTubeJoin the Patreon! Life is full of seasons. Sometimes those seasons are filled with joy and laughter, but other times those seasons include sorrow, grief, and loss. These hard seasons may come from the unexpected loss of a loved one or a child no longer being a direct part of your family. Today's conversation is especially for those currently walking through unexpected grief or those who love someone walking through grief. Joining me is Tim Challies. Tim is a pastor, author, and co-founder of Cruciform Press. He had to navigate loss and grief in his own life when he unexpectedly lost his college-aged son, Nick, in 2020. As a result of walking through his own season of grief, Tim shared his family's journey in a book titled Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God. I deeply appreciated Tim's openness about his story and his firm confidence in who our God is. I believe you'll receive a lot of truth from what he has to share today. In this episode, we welcome Tim Challies to the show. He is a Christian theologian, pastor, author, and blogger. He was a very early adopter of the blog format, and his blog at challies.com focuses on theology, social and cultural commentary, and book reviews. He is also the author of the new book Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God, which details his mourning process in the first calendar year after the sudden death of his son Nick. In this interview, we discuss why he has such reverence for the bible, what he thinks about Christians that don't read the bible, the shock of losing his son so suddenly, whether or not he thinks he will see his son again in heaven, the note he wrote and left in the pocket of the sweater that his son was buried in, how he worked through the feeling that his son's death may have been his fault, how his son's death shaped his views on the sovereignty of God, whether children that die before the age of accountability go to heaven, what the bible says about true manliness, and much more.
