On this episode of This vs. That, we explore the fascinating topic of good stress versus bad stress with our guest Eliza Huie, Director of Counseling at McLean Bible Church and biblical counseling instructor at Reform Theological Seminary. We discuss how certain types of stress can actually be beneficial for growth and motivation, while other forms can be detrimental to our wellbeing. Drawing from her expertise as a licensed professional counselor and author of "I'm Stressed: A Path from Pressure to Peace," we examine the differences between "eustress" (good stress) and "distress" (bad stress). We also explore how stress can strengthen us physically, mentally, and spiritually, while uncovering practical ways to manage and understand the role of stress in our daily lives. Join Steve Sonderman for an inspiring conversation with Dr. Crawford Loritts as they discuss the profound impact of mentoring and why it's essential for every man. Dr. Loritts challenges men to remove boundaries and barriers, step into the role of hope-givers, and invest in the next generation of leaders. Mentorship isn't about having all the answers—it's about being available, accessible, and intentional. As older men, we have the opportunity to guide younger ones by sharing our failures, praying with them, and providing the encouragement they need to grow. True leadership is about taking your God-given equity and using it to empower those around you. They also explore the concept of finishing well—how living well each day leads to a strong finish. Decision precedes development, and responding to God in the moment shapes the legacy we leave behind. This conversation will equip and encourage you in the ministry God has called you to, helping you embrace mentorship as a calling and a privilege. And this is what he means where he says, ‘You shall see for yourself that all manner of things shall be well', as if he said, ‘Pay attention to this now, faithfully and confidently, and at the end of time you will truly see it in the fullness of joy.'”~Julian of Norwich (c.1343-after 1416), English anchoress and writer “Religion is, as it were, the calm bottom of the sea at its deepest point, which remains calm however high the waves on the surface may be.”~Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), Austrian-born philosopher “Meek. QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “Oh! that gentleness! how far more potent is it than force!”~Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855), novelist and poet in Jane Eyre “Meek. Humble. Gentle. Jesus is not trigger-happy. Not harsh, reactionary, easily exasperated. He is the most understanding person in the universe. The posture most natural to him is not a pointed finger but open arms … You don't need to unburden or collect yourself and then come to Jesus. Your very burden is what qualifies you to come.” “When you come to Christ for mercy and love and help in your anguish and perplexity and sinfulness, you are going with the flow of his own deepest wishes, not against them.”~Dane Ortlund in Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers “Our attitudes control our lives. Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad. It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force.”~Irving Berlin (1888-1989), famed songwriter “People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude.”~John C. Maxwell, author and speaker “As we come to grips with our own selfishness and stupidity, we make friends with the impostor and accept that we are impoverished and broken and realize that, if we were not, we would be God. The art of gentleness toward ourselves leads to being gentle with others – and is a natural prerequisite for our presence to God in prayer.”~Brennan Manning (1934-2013), author and clergy “The power of just mercy is that it belongs to the undeserving. In this episode of the Unseen Leadership Podcast, Chandler Vannoy and Dan Iten are joined by Vance Pitman, President of the Send Network, and former pastor of Hope Church in Las Vegas. This episode explores the theme of leadership in the context of church planting and ministry. Pitman shares his insights and experiences, emphasizing the importance of succession and focusing on the kingdom of God rather than personal success. He also discusses his journey as a church planter in Las Vegas and the unique challenges and opportunities he has faced in ministering to a non-Christian population. QUOTES FROM EPISODE 79 “Jesus focused more on succession than He did on success. And I think that's an issue in the church and American leadership in America. Today, we focus on success without even thinking about succession. Jesus was just the opposite. If you look at His public ministry, it was not even successful. 120 people after three and a half years wouldn't get him any book deal or invitation to speak at any conference, but that 120 became 120,000 because He focused on succession knowing it was bigger than just His life. I think that's something we got to get focused towards.” – Vance Pitman “The church is just a temporary tool established by Jesus for the expansion of the kingdom. The real end game is the kingdom of God around the throne of Jesus for every tribe, tongue, people, and nation.” – Vance Pitman “The primary call on my life is not to do something for Jesus, the primary call of my life is to be with Jesus. And everything Jesus wants to do through my life, He'll do out of the overflow of what He's doing in my life.” – Vance Pitman “The greatest thing you bring to your role as a leader is your personal intimate relationship with Jesus because everything that He wants to do through you as a leader, He'll do in you. The key to learning about being a leader is before I can be a leader, I must be a devoted follower. The key to my success as a leader is the devotion that I pursue Christ with as a devoted follower. And as a follower of Jesus, He then begins to lead through us in ways that we would never dream possible.” – Vance Pitman “As much as you schedule appointments, as much as you schedule time with the family as much as you schedule time to sleep at night, you have to build rest and whitespace or margin into your calendar.” – Vance Pitman “We will never, never grow healthy churches with unhealthy leaders.” – Lance Witt “We have neglected the fact that a pastor's greatest leadership tool is a healthy soul.” – Lance Witt “I think one of the reasons that the church in North America is struggling today is because we have spiritually unhealthy leadership. When you look at the kingdom of God, globally, there are only two continents in the world where Christianity is declining. One of them is North America, and North America has the most resources, the most buildings, the most budget, the most staff the most degrees, and the most education the most. Why are we not seeing the kingdom expand? I think it's directly related to the spiritual health of those who are leading.” – Vance Pitman “Starting a church service is not planting a church. Biblical missiology is that planting a church starts with the city. You engage that city with the gospel, you make disciples, and churches are born as a byproduct.” – Vance Pitman “Leadership is lonely, but it cannot be done alone. Leadership demands that we bring other people to the table to lead alongside us.” – Vance Pitman “You cannot lead what you do not live long term. You can fake it in the short run. Authenticity in leadership is important and if you're not living it, you won't be able to lead it over the long haul. – Vance Pitman RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Replenish: Leading from a Healthy Soul by Lance Witt Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund The Stressless Life: Experiencing the Unshakable Presence...

What is sanctification? In this episode, Jeff Norris and Laura Story Elvington sit down with Dane Ortlund, a pastor and author, and discuss questions around the big word 'sanctification' and how we can understand it and apply it to our everyday faith. Many of us approach sanctification from a misconception of 'How do I change myself?' instead of 'How does God change me?' Be encouraged as you listen to how sanctification makes you more into the person God created you to be. Questions Covered in This Episode: • What are some of the greatest misconceptions about sanctification? • Where do faith and sanctification intersect? How about grace and sanctification? Doesn't God love us just the way we are? • Are there ways the church is missing the mark in over-emphasizing or under-emphasizing sanctification? The season of Advent is an invitation--an opportunity to slow down and take notice, to take in the wonder and miracle of Jesus' coming, a season to reflect on the character of the One who came. In this podcast, Erin Warren explains how Jesus is the Way and the Way Maker, teaching through Hebrews 10:19-23. He is the One who is the Way the restored relationship with our God, but He is also the One who made the way—dying on our behalf, offering Himself as the ultimate sacrifice to end all sacrifices. And now, we have hope, and we get to draw near to God… with confidence. Erin also sets up the coming week's focus on Jesus is the Truth and the Truth Teller. This Advent, I want to extend to you a gracious invitation to Christmas. This season is busy, and our schedules are fuller than ever. We go further down the list of our favorite hymns in this second of a five part series on sacred music. We give a huge thanks and shout out to Aaron Shows, James's brother-in-law, who played segments of all of the hymns we discuss on organ or piano. Please do not kill Andrew for mispronouncing your name today! We featured Aaron's music on the episode as we introduced each one. Aaron is a film-composer and also serves as the organist for First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, CA. Listen in to hear what hymns we picked (we give the writing credits on the episode audio). Without giving too many spoilers, here are some show notes: James referred to the book Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane Ortlund when he was discussing the theology of his hymn. A link to the book: https://www.crossway.org/books/gentle-and-lowly-hcj/ Charlie mentioned to hymn 604 out of Lutheran Service Book as a superior version of a hymn (that isn't on any of our lists but it disliked by two of our hosts). He also mentioned hymn 539 out of the same hymnal as his favorite tune setting to his hymn that he discusses. Here is a link to the German hymn writer Andrew referred to who lived during the 30 Years War: https://hymnary.org/person/Rist_Johann Charlie mentioned the hymn scholar Jon Vieker out of Concordia Seminary who has written about Catherine Winkworth (who we mentioned on the show). Andrew was unable to find anything exclusively on Catherine Winkworth from him. However, his faculty bio page is here: https://www.csl.edu/directory/jon-vieker/ *We also recommend you search him on https://scholar.csl.edu/ The French poet and author of Stephen's hymn is Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure. Last week we mentioned our daughters going to prom together. We talked about how their relationship has developed and some of the different seasons they have walked through. We got a lot of questions from people asking, how did our daughters developed a relationship to where they call each other their best friends, when before it wasn't always like that.  So, we asked Kathrynne and Kaitlynn for their insights and input on their relationship and both Jesse and I also add some of our thoughts and things from our perspective on this. Kathrynne has three points we go over: don't force it, learning emotional language, and time. A few thoughts I have had is loving your kids right where they are at. Our kids pick up so much from us, not just our words but our actions and emotions. Talking positively to them, about them to each other, and about them to others. Time has helped them get a different perceptive, allowing them to walk through different seasons and just a part of growing up and being a teenager.  We can give our kids a lot of things, guiding and helping but ultimately, they have to make their own choices and actions. I also give a book update and share the fun thing that is saving our lives this week, we are playing Wordle. In This Episode [00:34] - Welcome to another episode of The Crystal Paine Show. [14:44] – Kathrynne's second point: learning emotional language. [17:29] – When the girls started to learn, “when you did that, it made me feel like this”, it changed the barriers of their relationship. [21:21] – Jesse brings the aspect that may encourage your kids to be friends, if they see that in your marriage. [21:55] – Kathrynne's third point: giving it time. [25:57] – Fostering a sense of family togetherness. [28:25] – It is not your responsibility to make your kids be friends. On this episode, you'll hear from Lexie Polzin. She shares  her very transparent story about her recent experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her third child. This episode mentions postpartum depression, as well as intrusive and suicidal thoughts. If hearing about these topics may be distressing to you, you may want to save this episode to listen to at a later date. Also, we don't recommend this episode for little ears. This conversation was rich with real-life topics but also a message of hope. Lexie shares how she has let the Good Shepherd lead her through what felt like the valley of death, just like Psalm 23 says. Recommended Resources from this episode:Get Out of Your Head Get Out of Your Head Study Guide The Bible Recap Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers This Isn't What I Expected: Overcoming Postpartum Depression Watershed CounselingBurt's Bees Hydrating Lip OilThanks for listening to this episode of The 5:17 LIFE Podcast.
