Monday is an early release day with Per. 4 starting after advisories.This is a big week as we wrap up our school year.  Tuesday is Senior Awards via Zoom at 6 pm. Wednesday is Senior Return Day and Cap and Gown and Awards pick-up. Look for our SpringFest presentation this year online this week. Friday is the last day of school and Graduation Day. Legacy VAPA will have a new schedule for next year. On the 4x4 schedule, students will be able to earn 80 credits a year and have more opportunities to take electives and intervention/support classes! Please see our website and social media platforms for more info. Please note that COVID19 vaccinations are now available at Southeast High School by appointment. More information is on our website. VAPA Credit Recovery is June 13-17, Summer School is June 22-July 23, Summer Bridge and Summer Arts Intensives are Aug. 9-13, and the 1st day of instruction for next year is August 16. We are now less than 2 weeks to graduation and the last day of school! This is time to be sure all work is completed and students are studying for final exams. Senior grades are due Friday and 9th-11th grade the middle of next week. Legacy VAPA will have a new schedule for next year. All seniors are asked to wear their new senior shirts to our graduation meeting at 8:30 am on Thursday on Zoom. Hybrid/in-person students need to be in class at 8:30 am so they can log-in with the rest of the students in the 8:30 am online advisory class. Adrian Barnes is a music education professor at Rowan University. He joins the show for a discussion about his career and culturally responsive teaching. Topics: How hip hop and growing up playing music in the church were foundational experiences to Adrian’s musical career and how an important teacher helped him put it all together. Adrian’s experiences at Bethune-Cookman and Florida State University before his first job in Manatee County, Florida. Going back to earn his doctorate at Texas Tech University with a Promise Neighborhood Grant. Culturally responsive teaching and and advice for teachers to help reach students from a variety of different backgrounds. Barnes began his teaching career in a Title I school in Bradenton, Florida (grades 6-8) as a band and orchestra director. While in Florida, he served as an assistant director of marching band at Southeast High School working specifically with drum-line, and front ensemble. Dr. Barnes has worked closely with students from historically marginalized communities, as well as students with special needs. Upon attending Texas Tech University, Dr. Barnes served as an instructor of record, an instructor for the Texas Tech University String Project, and as a research assistant on a grant given to Texas Tech University by the U.S. Department of education for the purposes of establishing better relationships, and providing social capital to African American/Blacks and Latinos of Mexican-origin within a historically disenfranchised section of Lubbock, Texas. In addition, Dr. Barnes has an interest in studying the arts internationally and has traveled to universities within Southwest China as a part of a cultural exchange of American Music Education in Chengdu China to present on hip-hop rhythms through body percussion. Dr. Barnes research interests include using hip-hop in the music classroom, music and informal learning, aesthetics in music education, and the recruitment of historically marginalized populations by collegiate music ensemble directors. ------- Are you planning to travel with your group sometime soon? Today I will proovide new resources and information important for our families. Last week we held our first virtual Coffee With the Principal. Please look for information for the next Coffee With the Principal meetings online in May and in June. This week the South Gate Community of Schools will hold a Virtual Town Hall meeting on April 23 at 1 pm to provide an update on school services. Meeting information will be posted on our website and social media platforms. Please join us. We have a new website for our work as an online school, VAPA Online, which can be found at bit.ly/vapaonline the site has new teacher class hours and office hours, video updates, and other information to support families for the next several months. We also have a new Parent Request/Concern form to get the support you need in English or Spanish. As someone who has worked with non-profits for the past 10 years, Victoria Partridge knows that people who engage with non-profits have a story to tell, and she wants to hear that story. This episode is particularly touching, as it was recorded during the week that the school held a memorial for a student who was recently taken from them due to gun violence.
