Small Changes Big Shifts with Dr. Michelle Robin
From Scholarship to Success: Veronica Caldwell's Journey of Growth and Resilience

Small Changes Big Shifts with Dr. Michelle Robin

Success isn't about waiting for the perfect moment—it's about stepping up, even when doubt creeps in. Bayleigh and guest Veronica Caldwell dive deep into the mindset shifts that turn fear into fuel and setbacks into stepping stones. As a past recipient of the Small Changes Big Shifts scholarship program, Veronica shares how the support and resources she received helped her embrace discomfort and step into her potential. Her journey proves that growth comes from action, not just planning, and that confidence is built in the doing. The path to success isn't about having it all figured out—it's about taking the next right step, no matter how uncertain it feels. Key Takeaways: Fear doesn't mean stop—it's a signal that you're stepping outside your comfort zone, where the biggest growth happens. Clarity comes from taking action, not waiting for the perfect moment, so start where you are and trust that the next step will reveal itself. Setbacks are not failures but lessons that build resilience, strengthen your mindset, and guide you toward something even greater. Self-belief isn't about having all the answers—it's about trusting yourself to learn, adapt, and keep moving forward no matter what. True success comes from small, consistent actions over time, proving that steady progress is more powerful than a single big leap.   Join us in celebrating Dr. Michelle Robin's birthday by supporting the Small Changes Big Shifts scholarship fundraiser—help us empower the next generation with the tools for lifelong well-being! Ugly Fruit: an effort to combat food waste

A fairly common scene: grocery and food market patrons judiciously select their produce from pristine displays. And what happens to the fruit that isn't selected? The produce with a slight blemish or a unique shape. More often than not, it ends up as food waste in a landfill, which is both harmful to the environment and wasteful. One effort to combat this? Beer. Atlas Brew Works of DC has partnered with Food Rescue US-DC to brew a beer using rescued stone fruit from different markets. Daniel Vilarrubi, Director of Brewing Operations joins the show to describe the process. He also talks about partnering with RavenHook Bakehouse to use their leftover bread in brews. Colleen Gillespie also returns to the show as she is now the Site Coordinator for Food Rescue US-DC. She describes different ways markets, restaurants, hotels, and other food production sites can help combat food waste.  An ongoing conversation on this show is how breweries are stewards of the community, and this is a prime example. Shoutouts: Food Rescue US-DC, Atlas Brew Works (soon-to-be) NEW location at Carlyle Crossing in Alexandria, VA, Andy's Pizza, RavenHook Bakehouse, Silent Neighbor Export Stout winning GOLD at the 2023 World Beer Cup! MUSIC CREDIT: The following music was used for this media project:Music: Funky Intro 31 by TaigaSoundProdFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9552-funky-intro-31License (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-license

How does Jeremy get Freedom Scholar students to fall in love with reading? What is the integrated reading curriculum model? Why should we fall in love with the problem? Jeremy Smith answers these questions in this episode. Since his time as a youth running around Bay St., Jeremy always knew he wanted to be something bigger than himself – something with a real purpose. Early on that took him onto the football field, as quarterback for Bishop Kearney High School. Later it led him to pursue a teaching degree so that he could be better positioned to mentor and be part of his community's support system. Independently researching the history of his culture and the discriminatory nature of public education in classrooms and in policies against students of color and impoverished children cemented his personal mission to become a different type of educator. Determined to fight the cradle-to-prison pipeline, Jeremy worked at Freedom School as a Site Coordinator every summer while pursuing degrees in Business Management and Childhood Education at St. John Fisher College. Year after year under his coordination, Freedom School was a community exemplar of how to foster a love of reading, increase student reading scores, cooperative economics, social action, and civic engagement. When Freedom School ceased operation in 2020, Jeremy gathered a group of former Freedom School teachers, students, parents, researchers, and community members to form the Freedom Scholars Learning Center. Valerie Tyler Proves That Age Is Really Only A Number! The Only Limitations Are The Ones You Set For Yourself

Running is Cheaper Than Therapy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2022 69:23

Valerie Tyler is one of my former coaches. She taught me how to swim and how to overcome my fear of the deep end of the pool. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Valerie has been active all her life but she only got to into Marathons at 50 on a dare. Over the next 20 years, Valerie has run 35 marathons qualifying for the Boston Marathon four times. She also got into triathlons, also on a dare, and after she taught herself how to swim, she started with sprints, Olympics, half-marathons and finally the full ironman. Currently, Valerie focuses on coaching other athletes wanting to promote good health to the next generation. Her business partner is Coach Mo, who was a previous guest here. She also helped start the Southside CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association).     Episode Highlights: Valerie the tomboy since childhood. Her motivation to remain active and help others. Valerie becomes a marathoner on a dare and her first marathon. Some memorable marathons, the good and the bad. She becomes involved in CARA Valerie becomes a triathlon athlete, again, on a dare. Some memories and tips from her experience with triathlons. Valerie is challenging herself to go to Big Shoulders. She talks about her coaching journey. Valerie shares some final words of inspiration. Guest Bio Growing up as a tomboy competing with her older brother, Valerie was always active physically. From baseball to climbing trees, to tag races, to monkey bars, to long jumps, and on and on. Then mud biking! Then she transitioned to African dance, ballet, and jazz. In between, tennis, roller skating, skiing, and aerobic classes. Whew!!!! Always active, always competing, and always challenging herself. Fast forward, she was dared to run a marathon at the age of 50. Why did that happen? Valerie really found her groove….so for the next 20 years, she ran 35 marathons all over the world and more ½ marathons than she can count. During that period, she also was approached by Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) to build a south side base leaving from LaRabida Hospital, so under pressure, Valerie founded that running group and built it up to 60 plus marathon members. During those 5 years of being the ‘Site Coordinator' for CARA South Side, she qualified for the Boston Marathon 4 times, and lead the 9:30 and 10-minute Pace Groups. Valerie was dared to race in Triathlons at the age of 52. Why did that happen? Over the years, she has participated in many, many Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and 1 Full Ironman. She learned to swim, earned her Life Savers Certification, and began coaching swim lessons with Chicago Blue Dolphins. Her first Ironman at the age of 67 was in Chattanooga, and she placed 2nd in her age group behind a woman that had done 9 and this was her 10th competition. What a proud moment to be on the Podium and invited to Kona!!!!! However, she was one and done. Ironman training was by far the most difficult, challenging, and mentally draining experience she had ever done. She was exhausted but exhilarated enough for a lifetime. In the past few years, Valerie has retired from Corporate America and earned certifications in Yoga, Personal Training, Fitness Training, and Nutritional Training. (She primarily follows a vegetarian diet with an emphasis on protein). She founded her own company, VTFit, 7 years ago and now teaches 40 minutes of strength training on Zoom 5X a week with a base of approximately 60 students, most of whom have been with her for more than 3 years. She has received numerous first and second-place age group awards and hundreds of medals from racing events of all types. As she moves into her senior years, Valerie feels the desire to extend herself and her energies into motivating and training the next generation. She was blessed to have an amazing racing career, and she wants to see more ‘people of color' pushing the envelope and representing the US in marathons and triathlons around the world. So, she continues to train – coaching swimming and track under the guidance of her stellar coach, Mo Wills, of Infinity Multisport. This game is about ‘getting comfortable with being uncomfortable' – his favorite saying. Her favorite mantras are;  (1) Keep It Moving and stay active.  (2) If I can set an example for a healthy lifestyle, my work is done!  (3) Be bold and live life to the fullest in love, health, spirit, family, and friends!!!!  (4) You can choose to be healthy and fit…it's a choice! After graduation from high school, he enrolled at Tennessee State University, a historically black college and university (HBCU), where he majored in Social Work. Shortly after graduation from TSU, Dr. Haggard began work with the Tennessee Department of Children's Services as a Family Service Worker, working in partnership with children and families to achieve permanence. During his tenure with DCS, he was able to establish a strong foundation in the field, working to build relationships with key stakeholders and community leaders, while gaining valuable exposure to various systems, including healthcare, criminal justice, and education. The role of Family Service Worker was instrumental to the professional success of Dr. Haggard as it helped to build a very eclectic skill set that allows him to be a servant leader who puts equity and social justice first. In most recent years, he has served as a Family Resource Center Director, a Site Coordinator for a national drop-out prevention organization, a Director of School Partnerships for a national organization that focuses on disrupting educational inequities, a Director of Talent Management for a high-performing network of schools in Tennessee and Mississippi, and as an Assistant Professor & MSW Coordinator in the Department of Social Work & Urban Studies at Tennessee State University. Currently, Dr. Haggard works as a Program Manager for a Fortune 100 company. He holds a Masters of Social Work from Western Kentucky University and a Doctorate of Education in Professional Practice and Leadership from Trevecca Nazarene University.
