We often expect love and relationships to be easy--and perfect--but the best of relationships are much like a bountiful garden that needs regular doses of tender loving care. And, like the weeds that can strangle and overtake a healthy garden, issues such as blame, resentment, and chronic conflict can ruin even the most promising relationship. Over time, I've come to see that imperfections are a natural part of all relationships, and that it's how we handle the imperfections and stumbles that make all the difference. Today, I'm joined by an Emmy-award winning couple, Sean Kanan and Michele Kanan, who offer a guiding light through their new relationship books and deeply love-filled paradigm. With the mantra, "Two hearts. One soul," as their foundation, Sean and Michele bring an abundance of honesty, depth, wisdom, and vulnerability to this compelling episode.Topics discussed include betrayal, love, relationships, marriage, infidelity, affairs, extramarital affairs, adultery, dating, honesty, genuineness, self-development, self-awareness, rules, agreements, attachment theory, secure attachment, anxious attachment, insecure attachment, film, television, conflict, fighting, communication, trust, safety, security, healing, convenienceship, origin story, growth, curiosity, priorities, work, career, film, movies, Emmy® awards, Cobra Kai, Karate Kid, family, success, children, blended family, blended families, divorce, resentment, blame, shame, worthiness, self-love, inner strength, becoming, unbecoming, healing, authentic self, and forgiveness. Please note that this episode may contain sensitive material; listener discretion is advised.Emergency Assistance Note: If you or someone you know needs immediate support, please call your emergency services. Money. Hard work. Privilege. Inheritance. Entitlement. Motivation. Success. All of these words can bring up a host of thoughts and feelings. Some of them tend to have positive connotations, yet many of them are super-charged with negativity. Shows such as "Succession" have brought fresh attention to the realm of the uber wealthy and the dramatic flavor of issues such as family feuds, excess, sibling rivalry, manipulation, and mental health issues including addiction. But, as many of Shakespeare's works describe, family dynamics can get particularly mucky when wealth and privilege are part of the picture. Join Dr. Carla and expert Jessica McGawley as we unravel some of the threads of the important and challenging issues that often affect us regardless of our socioeconomic status. Topics discussed include family relationships, inheritance, money, wealth, empowerment, Gen Z, Millennials, entitlement, privilege, conflict, suicide, savings, spending, giving, donating, gratitude, appreciation, kindness, boundaries, strength, extinction burst, neurolinguistics, shame, children, intergenerational patterns, family dynamics, and love. A lot of families don't take sibling abuse seriously—behavior they would never accept from a bully at school, they completely gloss over when it's happening at home. How do we heal from that trauma? And when it continues into adulthood, can we even mend the relationship with our sibling? In this episode, I coach Jackie through these questions, letting go of what isn't working so that she can reclaim her authentic self and integrate what was lost along the way.Want to book a one-hour session with me? Does your internal monologue ever sound like, "I'll never get better," "I'll never have the life I want," "I'll never fall in love"? Then this one's for you, baby! Learned helplessness is when we learn (often in abusive households growing up) that we don't have any control over the harm being done to us, so we just stop trying. We basically learn to be helpless. In this episode, somatic marriage and family therapist Katrina Foster joins me to talk through how learned helplessness impacts our lives and how we heal from the bottom up. Do you believe in miracles? Does the idea of manifestation seem real and within your reach, or does it sound more like an impossibility? Can a positive mindset make a powerful difference in helping your dreams come true? From my experience, I believe you can learn to manifest–to foster your potential and abundance–by tuning into your personal idea of prosperity. Of course, the process of manifestation doesn't mean that all your dreams will instantly come true. But the concept of manifestation can help you lean into–and draw toward you–your best possible life.Join Dr. Carla and Manifestation and Results Coach Scott Haug for an empowering discussion about the little mindset changes you can make to help your dreams come true. Topics discussed include self-growth, miracles, meditation, achievement, the law of attraction, manifestation, mindset, dreams, empowerment, authenticity, self-help, prosperity, prosperity magnet, relationships, research, abundance, and gratitude. Do you feel as if life is passing you by as you rush through one day after another, missing the glimmers that make it worthwhile? I've found that many people feel as if they are barely living – they wake up, work, eat, and sleep – a hum-drum cycle that is repeated joylessly day after day. And, if you add pressure, stress, anxiety–and more stress – into the mix, life can feel purposeless and overwhelming. But hope is on the way! Research shows that you CAN create new, uplifting cycles that foster well-being simply by noticing life's little joys. Join me and renowned mental health expert Deb Dana for a deep dive into the gentle, life-changing power of glimmers. Topics discussed include neurobiology, co-regulation, trauma, complex trauma, dysregulation, regulation, sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, relationships, triggers, glimmers, overwhelm, anxiety, stress, hope, Polyvagal Theory, Stephen Porges, autonomic nervous system, patterns of protection, fight-flight response, safety, connection, neuroception, and healing. So much of what we think about ourselves and the world is A. not helpful, and B. operating on automatic without our even knowing about it. If we think we're not good enough, not worthy of love, always going to be broke, never going to feel happy again, etc. etc., we're letting self-defeating beliefs run the show of our lives. In this episode, I'm joined by therapist and author Judith Belmont to talk about how we work with those self-defeating beliefs, so they don't work us. I call "toxic empathy" (not a clinical term, BTW, just my term), the phenomenon that occurs when we empathize with others to the point that we can't feel our *own* feelings. We can't feel anger when people hurt us, or we order a cocktail we don't want because our friend doesn't want to drink alone, etc. etc. It robs us of our boundaries and our autonomy, often leading to self-abandonment. In this episode, I welcome marriage and family associate therapist Renee Tate back to the pod to talk about how it works and how we heal. Has your inner voice been quashed or silenced? Do you feel small or unseen due to the forces of your upbringing, relationships, or society? Do you wish you could take up space, speak your truth, and show up as your authentic self without fear or making apologies? Dr. Carla has found that many people have lost the courage–or never developed the ability–to use their authentic voice because they learned (often early on in life) that they had to be quiet, "good," or obedient in order to be loved or found worthy. But she's here to help you discover that the opposite is true: Genuine love–for the self and with others–comes from the freedom of knowing and expressing your inner truth. By discovering and embracing the power of your own vibrant voice, you can set yourself free to live fearlessly–if imperfectly. Join Dr. Carla and autonomy expert Dr. Soha Al-Jurf for a heartfelt exploration into the power of your inimitable voice. Topics discussed include personal identity, self-exploration, authenticity, emotional experiences, individuation, autonomy, feminine and masculine archetypes, voice rehabilitation, speech-language pathologist, relationships, love, connection, personal freedom, alignment, empowerment, spirituality, soul, boundaries, self-love, and self-discovery. Teal grew up being super parentified by her addicted mother. The house was dirty, there wasn't food, her mom was at the bars, and she was in charge of her siblings. In this episode, we dig into the self-limiting beliefs around self-worth that resulted from Teal's struggle (the people pleasing, resentments, and lack of self-knowing) and look at what it means to heal. Embrace Positive Affirmations to Boost Positivity, Self-Esteem, and Inner Strength!Affirmation is a powerful tool for resilience. We're often expected to be positive and upbeat no matter what is going on in our lives. At the very least, we generally feel compelled to put on a happy face for the world. Yet, in real life, it's not always easy–or in truth, even natural–to be positive all the time. And for those who face daily challenges such as discrimination, low self-worth, isolation, a lack of support, or mental health issues, life can feel very lonely, dark, and bleak. Although there's no simple cure for these challenging issues, a daily practice of healthy affirmations can truly help foster self-esteem, empowerment, and a sense of belonging. Join Dr. Carla and affirmation expert Jess Vosseteig, author and illustrator, for an uplifting exploration of the power of positive self-messages. Jess's work focuses on inclusivity, empowerment, and creating conversations surrounding feminism and the Queer community. Jess has worked with many top companies including Simon & Shuster, Ulta Beauty, and FB/Meta. Topics discussed include self-messages, affirmations, mental health, isolation, community, depression, anxiety, hope, mindfulness, positivity, self-love, inclusivity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, LGBTQ+, suicide, suicidality, the Queer community, societal norms, feminism, and personal empowerment. With a focus on education and empowerment, Jess brings messages of wisdom, compassion, and nonjudgment. A lack of encouragement in childhood leaves a deep mark on us—it can impact our sense of self-worth, of safety, of resiliance—you name it. Sometimes it's easy to see that we weren't encouraged, but for many of us, we don't even realize that it's at the root of many of our struggles. In this episode, I welcome writer and therapist Solasta McIntyre back to the show to talk us through how a lack of encouragement impacts children's developing brains, what the repercussions look like in adulthood, and how we heal. Trigger Warning: This podcast contains references to sensitive themes, such as suicide, which may be distressing to some individuals. We ask you to put yourself and your mental health first when making the decision to listen. Death by suicide is all too common, particularly in the construction industry, as the suicide rate among male construction workers is 75% higher than men in the general population. Research indicates that talking about mental health and suicide helps with prevention, so "Build Me Up” is utilizing its platform to create a space for conversation. We're joined by the LIVIN Foundation, a nonprofit that seeks to prevent suicide by creating quality connections through everyday conversations about mental health by way of programs and partnerships. In this episode, we discuss the history of the nonprofit, its various services, the importance of talking about mental health, and what truly “LIVIN” means to our guests. If you or someone you know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, please text 988 to connect with the National Suicide and Crisis Hotline. Representatives are also available online to assist via chat.
