In celebration of #SportsBraSquad summer, we've created the body image series here on the Run, Selfie, Repeat Podcast! Today, we're joined by licensed clinical social worker Colleen Baker to talk about diet culture, fitness at every size, toxic positivity, body positivity, and what we can do to move towards body image neutrality. Colleen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Owner & Clinical Director of the private group practice Attune Psychotherapy in New York City. She spent many years early on in her career working in eating disorder treatment centers, holding roles ranging from Recovery Coach to Lead Therapist. Colleen has a strong passion for eating disorder recovery advocacy and the sharing of her own story, which has led to her work with non-profits. Over the years she has piloted and supervised a peer support program, taken calls on a crisis line, led a volunteer chapter, and most recently chaired a network of eating disorder specialists determined to emphasize equitable access to care in eating disorder treatment. Colleen believes that anyone eager to recover should have access to quality care, regardless of personal or financial circumstances. Her clinical practice focuses on treating eating disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, trauma, hoarding, OCD and mood disorders, specializing in a Health at Every Size framework and emphasizing body neutrality. She encourages clients to find respect and appreciation for their natural body size while striving to meet each client exactly where they are in their process. She utilizes an honest, curious approach, finding that humor and a strengths-based perspective can help aid clients in developing effective communication, self-respect and a will to improve their lives. Badass Lady Gang, meet Sports Bra Expert and the founder of Bravolution- Laura Tempesta! Laura is the only American with a Master's degree in Lingerie Design, and the only person in the world with a custom-designed degree to study the engineering, design, performance and innovation of Sports Bras. In her previous job, she was Nike's Sports Bra Innovation Director. Today, she consults with brands to help innovate sports bras so that they actually support us. In this episode, we talk about everything from understanding how sports bras work, why innovation is moving at a snail's pace in the sports bra world, how to understand your body shape and size, why bra sizing is outdated and stupid, why removable pads are a thing, why sports bras are so expensive, to why it's taken so long for companies to make truly supportive and size-inclusive sports bras. While representation is important, it's even more important to understand how much of an inside job body resilience is. So, join myself and my Poison Punch Podcast co-host Kayla as we unpack how the #SportsBraSquad started and how it's evolved as we gear up for Global Sports Bra Squad day on July 24, 2021! Kelly Roberts is a total badass. She's the head coach and founder of the Badass Lady Gang, creator of the viral #SportsBraSquad hashtag, and co-host of the Poison Punch Podcast. Kelly is all about female empowerment. She never classified herself as an athletic person growing up, but after graduating from college without a career and the sudden, tragic death of her brother, she got into the habit of working out just to numb herself. That's when she realized that she was drinking the poison punch — all that nasty shit and poisonous messaging that we're consuming on the daily. Trust us: Nobody gets through life unscathed by the toxic effects of diet culture. But through community, honesty, and the simple act of putting one foot in front of the others, Kelly was able to move past her body image issues. We talk about how horrible running is, why finishing a marathon is the best worst day of your life, how women use clothing as armor, and embracing your sports bras. We only get one life to live. It's too short to spend worrying about how we look. Come hang out and learn more about us at http://thebabesment.com/ (thebabesment.com)! Growing up very active and also experiencing many digestive issues, she became interested in nutrition and the impact that food had on the way she felt and performed. It was there, alongside her own life experiences where she realized that the food that made it to our plates is only a sliver of the health equation. Over time, her passion for mental health and wellbeing grew, and she began to see our “diet” as more than just food, but everything that we consume -- social media, advertisement, relationships, self-talk, … and so much more. Now, when it comes to nutrition, she believes that our thoughts about food, our bodies, and ourselves impact us more than any one food we eat (or don’t), and that having a healthy, balanced, low-stress relationship with food is most important. Shedding your shirt along with your insecurities and working out in your sports bra is TERRIFYING! What if a complete stranger, your neighbor, or a loved one confirms the horrible things you say to yourself when you look in the mirror? WELL, here's something I want you to focus on, WHAT YOU SAY TO YOURSELF. Because even if someone looks at you and judges you (screw them), there will be women and girls who see you and think, "I want her confidence". We can't redefine what strength looks like unless we show up.
As women, so much of our worth is ascribed to how we look. We get judged on it. And the larger a woman is, the more likely she's going to be labeled as lazy, unhealthy, and whether or not you want to admit it, ugly. AND I CALL BULLSHIT. HEALTH ISN'T A LOOK, IT'S A LIFESTYLE. Mark your calendars because on June 24th, women around the world are ditching their shirts along with their insecurities for Global #SportsBraSquad Day, a day dedicated to celebrating that strength comes in all shapes and sizes.
Run Selfie Repeat. #SportsBraSquad. She Can and She Did. #BQorBust. "I set out to inspire people who were struggling to find a way to feel proud of themselves." Kelly Roberts is in the house! We talk about running, injury, the hot guys in the NYC half marathon, the haters, the sports bra squad and more. She writes on her site: "When I started a blog called Run, Selfie, Repeat in 2013, I had no idea what the hell I was doing. I had just “gone viral” for taking selfies with "hot guys" behind me while I tried to survive a half marathon. Suddenly, I found myself on Good Morning America and was struggling to navigate the fleeting hurricane that is going viral. "That’s when my badass lady gang swooped in and encouraged me to start a blog and run with my five seconds of fame. "I wanted to inspire people who, like me, had a hard time with physical activity (that’s putting it lightly – I used to call myself the President of the "I f*cking hate running club"). I set out to inspire people who were struggling to find a way to feel proud of themselves. And so, I started a running blog because despite the fact that running consistently humbled the hell out of me, it also gave me a way to set a tangible, seemingly impossible goal, and work to make it a reality. "A lot happened in a very short four years. I met the royals, went from “I don’t think I’m a runner” to a 3 hour and 41 minute marathoner(!!!), started the #SportsBraSquad, landed the cover of Women’s Running Magazine(!!!), and saw thousands of badass women cross their very first finish lines." In 2009, Kelly Roberts was thrown into the deep end when she suddenly lost her younger brother, Scott. Struggling to cope during this emotionally draining time, Kelly gained over 70 pounds by the end of the year, by which point she decided it was time for her to find a healthy way to work out her grief. That’s when she found running. 8 years later, the sport has become invaluable to Kelly, and she now uses it to uplift thousands of others through her hilarious yet incredibly authentic blog Run, Selfie, Repeat. Kelly continually strives to break the societal norms that insist what “strong” ought to look like, and she loves inspiring thousands of runners to pursue the best versions of themselves. In this episode, Kelly shares with us what she’s learned through her own ongoing journey to self-acceptance as well as her tips to conquering the inhibitions that tie us down. All, of course, with a healthy dose of hysterical laughter. Questions Kelly is asked: 3:48 What prompted you to start running and what has that journey been like? 8:29 How has running impacted other aspects of your life? 10:24 What prompted you to start your ‘Hottie-Hunting’ selfies and how did that ignite your blog and fame on social media? 14:15 How has your blog evolved and where do you see it going in the next few years? 18:48 How quickly did #SportsBraSquad take off? 23:36 How has it been working with Oiselle and when did you start working with them? 28:39 Where do you think Oiselle is going to be in the next few years? 31:32 What challenges have you encountered with your running and how did you stay motivated? 35:18 What are you most proud of since you started this journey? 37:48 What would you tell a new runner who’s trying to break out of their comfort zone? 40:59 What would you say are some of the more common inhibitions that new runners may have? 43:11 Where do you see yourself as a runner in the next few years? 46:42 What can you tell us about the rebranding of your blog? 48:28 When will it launch? Quotes by Kelly: “Just because something is hard or just because something feels impossible doesn’t mean that you shouldn't try.” “Being on a team makes you a stronger woman.” “Running is about bringing people together and empowering them.” “I think I can name on one hand the amount of people who actually know how to eat a healthy, balanced diet.” “I really just want to run for life.” “Running is something I DO, it’s not who I AM.” “Whatever I can do to bring people together, I’m gonna try.” Want more awesome interviews and advice? Dear man who found it appropriate to send me this email, Once upon a time, your words would have cut me like valyrian steel. Today? They remind me how important it is to change the way we see strength. Because what you call fat, I know can run a marathon in 3 hours in 41 minutes. I hope one day you can obtain the strength I've worked tirelessly for. Until then, know that I will spend the rest of my life empowering the women you hope to shame. You will lose. You already are. The #SportsBraSquad is strong as hell. See you at the finish line. I'll be the one giving you a high five when you get there. #RunSelfieRepeat A post shared by Kelly Roberts (@kellykkroberts) on Jun 26, 2017 at 8:15pm PDT After sharing one of the many inappropriate emails I receive about the #SportsBraSquad and my weight, the story made headlines. And as I was answering an editor's questions about how the email made me feel, I realized that I've normalized the act. We need to talk about fat shaming online and how it's never appropriate to comment on someone's weight. And then, what you need to do to build your body confidence. This episode was brought to you by the website hosting platform that made it easy for this not so tech savvy scaredy cat possible to create a blog and a podcast, SQUARESPACE! If you've ever thought about creating your own website or blog, use offer code Kelly for 10% off your purchase of personal domain address and website on Squarespace.com. On this episode, we continue the theme of SportsBraSquad from the previous episode with Jessie Barnes, Teresa Krammer, and Vanessa Mitchell from Austin, TX. If you haven’t listened to episode 54 yet, please listen before listening to this one. We attended the Global Sports Bra Squad Day event on June 24, 2017, in Austin and we share sound bites and thoughts from the leaders of the event as well as participants. On this episode, we have Jessie Barnes, Teresa Krammer, and Vanessa Mitchell from Austin, TX. After, learning about the growing #SportsBraSquad movement Kelly Roberts started, this group of running friends felt led to be a part of fostering a supportive place where women can shed their insecurities and step out of their comfort zone. In 2016 they hosted a Sports Bra Squad event in Austin, TX which encouraged women of all ages and body types, and they will be hosting their second event on June 24, 2017, for Global Sports Bra Squad Day. Jessie, Teresa, and Vanessa are honest and vulnerable, sharing personal stories about their own struggles with body image, and how this movement and their community has helped them become more confident and strong in their own skin. Our guests also share running advice and challenge our listeners to join a community and to base your self-worth and body image on your talents and strength, not the shape of your body. You know, this may sound crazy, but I was pretty awful to myself and my body the weeks leading into this photo shoot. I was terrified about being on the cover of a magazine in my sports bra. So much so, that I almost went on a juice cleanse in an attempt to lose as much weight as I could as quickly as possible. Look, I know I'm the leader of the #SportsBraSquad but I'm still human. I'm still working and fighting to be the strongest version of myself possible both mentally and physically. I'm so proud of this cover because it was so terrifying for me to do. But it fills me with hope to know that we're changing the way the women see strength. So, let's talk about how TERRIFYING and surreal it was to shoot the cover of Women's Running Magazine! Now, share your story! Go to Squarespace.com and use offer code Kelly for 10% off. Had I not have launched Run, Selfie, Repeat on Squarespace, I 100% believe that I would have given up on making my own website. You won't regret it.
