Kelly is the creator and head coach of the Badass Lady Gang and the host of the Run, Selfie, Repeat Podcast. We chat about her behind the scenes relationship with running, and how she came up with BALG. She's also just a lot of fun. "Kelly Roberts' pre-BALG fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn't until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from the nyc half marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the women's running community Badass Lady Gang was born." https://www.badassladygang.com/about New podcast instagram! @trailrunningwomenpod More from me @hilsport55 Discount code TRW15 for 15% off at www.janji.com Go to www.athleticgreens.com/TRWP to get 5 FREE travel packs and one year supply of Vitamin D! Katie and Stuart sit down with Kelly Roberts who is the Founder of Badass Lady Gang, a running community created by women for women. This foundation was created to help women find joy in the struggle, providing women of all athletic levels a safe space to have fun and belong. There are some crazy health fads out there and ideas that pop up and grow popular on social media, such as the one where people were pushing the idea that you don't need much sleep and can be more productive because you'll have more time, but people weren't realizing the bad health consequences one can experience when neglecting sleep. Kelly explains bluntly that running is hard and often just isn't fun, but it's OK to acknowledge this and just keep moving forward. She has a love/hate relationship with running, but she keeps doing it because she needs it and it gives her fuel for success in her life. I have a love-hate relationship with running. I know what it feels like to be in great running shape, feel that runner's high and love getting faster & faster. I also know what it feels like to get back into running and be certain that anything else would be a better idea. Today's new Powerful Ladies Podcast guest knows those highs and lows of running, and not seeing a place where she fits in the running world, created her own lane the Badass Lady Gang and is inviting all of you to join her whether you walk or run marathons. This episode is out now to learn about her running story, what Badass Lady Gang is all about, and hear us rant about everything from shitty sports bras to the running industry still not getting how to be inclusive of all runners and beyond. This is a good one!

We're taking a break this week (week two of two), so we decided to pull up one of our favorites from the back catalog. This is episode 016 with Kelly Roberts of Badass Lady Gang and you won't want to miss it! Here are the show notes:Have you ever wanted to join a club but never felt like you fit in? Like, there's an in-crowd, outfits, and a lingo you don't know? Maybe the members of the group even exhibit an intimidating level of physical fitness? That sort of thing could make a person feel unwelcome—but what if you took that feeling and used it as an opportunity to create something new and different? And along the way, you found that there were lots of other people just like you? That is exactly what Kelly Roberts did with the Badass Lady Gang, a running community for ladies who don't identify as runners. Kelly has intentionally designed her community as, well, a community first and a workout second—one that's confronting the constricting stereotypes of what a "runner" should be. Come for Tony's yoga studio story, and stay for the badass-ness that is Kelly and her awesome community.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Poison punch. It's toxic. It's everywhere. And it's making us all sick. It's the diets, the weight loss teas and programs, workouts, and superfood powders that say they're selling health. Or the supplements, creams, prescriptions, makeups, treatments, and procedures that promise to make you look younger and yield you, unconditional love. And it's all the apps, pop-ups, fads, people, retreats, and goop that cost a fortune but guarantee a better version of you. Poison punch is the 70+ billion dollar industry that profits off you looking in the mirror and thinking, “I'm fat, old, tired, and ugly”. Poison punch is everything you're being told and sold to fix problems that (spoiler alert!) don't actually exist. There's no way in hell the diet and beauty industries are going anywhere. Poison punch is here to stay. And while we might not be able to rid the world of poison punch, we can change our relationship to it. Join hosts Kelly Roberts and Kayla Reynolds for the Body Image Series as they figure out what's poison punch, what punch has traces of poison in it, and what's actually true. This week, we're joined by Chris SantaMaria! Chris is a certified personal trainer and group fitness pro in NYC. He's known for his work at 305 fitness and reputable kettlebell coach at the fhitting room. Growing up, Chris was the aspiring dancer in a family filled with athletes, and while performing was a childhood dream, he soon realized that dance wasn't his forever career when he was bit by the fitness bug. In celebration of #SportsBraSquad summer, we've created the body image series here on the Run, Selfie, Repeat Podcast! Today, we're joined by licensed clinical social worker Colleen Baker to talk about diet culture, fitness at every size, toxic positivity, body positivity, and what we can do to move towards body image neutrality. Colleen is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the Owner & Clinical Director of the private group practice Attune Psychotherapy in New York City. She spent many years early on in her career working in eating disorder treatment centers, holding roles ranging from Recovery Coach to Lead Therapist. Colleen has a strong passion for eating disorder recovery advocacy and the sharing of her own story, which has led to her work with non-profits. Over the years she has piloted and supervised a peer support program, taken calls on a crisis line, led a volunteer chapter, and most recently chaired a network of eating disorder specialists determined to emphasize equitable access to care in eating disorder treatment. Colleen believes that anyone eager to recover should have access to quality care, regardless of personal or financial circumstances. Her clinical practice focuses on treating eating disorders, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, trauma, hoarding, OCD and mood disorders, specializing in a Health at Every Size framework and emphasizing body neutrality. She encourages clients to find respect and appreciation for their natural body size while striving to meet each client exactly where they are in their process. She utilizes an honest, curious approach, finding that humor and a strengths-based perspective can help aid clients in developing effective communication, self-respect and a will to improve their lives. Hey Gang! Welcome to the Run, Selfie, Repeat podcast where we talk about life with a side of running. TODAY, I want to break down what it means to truly start from where you are. So many of us use cookie cutter training plans when we take on everything from 5Ks to marathons which means, we get a plan online or from me when you join me for a training experience. And while I offer three different levels, that training plan may still ask you to run more than you're ready for. Which is totally fine! NO SHAME. I want you to understand how a training plan works and how to safely train so that you can make infomred decision for the rest of your life regardless of whether you're training for something specific or just running because it makes you feel good. So let's talk about what it means and looks like to start from where you are. Hey Gang! Welcome to a poison punch segment here on the Run, Selfie, Repeat podcast! This episode originally aired in April 2021 and it's an important one because I see this EVERYWHERE. Let's talk about why so many of us feel like we need to use exercise to earn or justify our food choices. Join hosts Kelly Roberts and Kayla Reynolds M.S. every week as they figure out what's poison punch, what punch has traces of poison in it, and what's actually true. Hey Gang! Welcome to the Run, Selfie, Repeat podcast! Today, we're talking about how we can feel proud of a race when we fall short of a goal. Let's unpack! Grab your journal and flesh out these questions: What you're racing for. What made you want to train for the race in the first place? What motivated you to show up for yourself in training? What does your personal best effort look like? What does success look like? What does failure look like? What can you do the week of your race to set yourself up to give yourself your best? What's the hydration strategy? What's the fueling strategy. What's your pacing strategy? What's your fun strategy? How can you find the fun when you're in another world of pain? Hey Gang! Today, I am so excited to get to sit down with the newest coach and head of Yoga and Strength for the Badass Lady Gang, Amanda Kerpius! Head of Yoga and Strength for the Badass Lady Gang, Amanda Kerpius is a certified Yoga Therapist and Yoga Teacher, Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Running Coach, 10x marathon finisher, Boston Marathon Qualifier, and new mom! During undergraduate school, Amanda performed at football and basketball games as a Colorado State “Golden Pom'' dancer. With her midsection constantly exposed to thousands of sports fans, she started running as a way to help improve her perceived body-shape. After graduation, Amanda moved to NYC to pursue a career in dance. She ran and ran and ran convinced that having a smaller body would help her career. What she didn't know is that she was building a physical and mental endurance that would carry her through her trials of adulthood: career changes, college degrees, marriage, divorce, financial debt, pregnancy, and now, motherhood. Running is Amanda's meditation and when Amanda feels most connected with her breath, thoughts, and Self. Running is when she feels most alive and she knows she isn't alone. Through her teaching and therapeutic work, Amanda seeks to help others continue this magical journey of life with endurance of mind and body. First a trained dancer, Amanda practiced, performed, and choreographed dance for 26 years, lending her lifetime of body awareness newfound credibility through a yoga form that is both rigorous and healing to the physical and emotional self. Amanda graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Swedish Institute's massage therapy program in 2017 and shortly thereafter received her License in Massage Therapy. That year she also completed a yearlong study of functional movement science with the Gray Institute making her a Fellow of Applied Functional Science. In May 2021, she completed an 850-hour yoga therapy certification with Prema Yoga Institute and became a certified yoga therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She received her first 200-hour yoga teacher training certification in 2012 and has accumulated nearly 3,000 teaching hours since then. As she trains for her 11th marathon, Amanda specializes in and has a passion for helping endurance athletes perform better and experience deep, nourishing recovery with yoga-based functional movement, functional massage therapy and game-changing yoga wisdom that's designed to ignite the mind and body to achieve it's best. If there's one supplement that's blown up over the past year, it's Athletic Greens. It seems like every influencer -- from triathlete or wellness blogger to fashion influencer and mom -- is promoting it. So one of the most common questions we get is: Why is Athletic Greens everywhere these days? Will it improve my performance? Should I take it? Is it poison punch? This week we're breaking down Athletic Greens and demystifying this product that claims to do just about everything to supercharge your life. We deep dive: What Athletic Greens and how much it costs The toxic (and unrealistic) image that they are selling Claims that Athletic Greens are making -- everything from improving liver and hormone function, to supporting gut health and digestion How the claims they make are not proven but are instead based on the “mechanism of action” of the nutrients rather than studies proving the claims Why they're targeting the already “healthy” and why most people who use it probably won't benefit from it Reasons why some people feel so good taking it How superdosing nutrients just makes for really expensive urine and makes your body work so much harder Some recommendations that they make that are flat out wrong We recognize that behind every single diet, program, product, or anything else there are people — people who are trying to feel good, get answers, find love, and feel happy. People who are targeted, or rather preyed on, by the industry. Our goal is not to tell you what to do. Our goal is to help you put your curiosity goggles on and make choices that are informed and empowered. Tune in as we break it down! Hey gang! It's time for a nother poison punch segment and today, we're talking all about PROTEIN! It's everywhere and in everything. BUT WHY? Why do we need protein in our cookies? Or in our chips? Diet culture is profiting on the assumption that protein = healthy and while protein is a very important piece of our diets, it's not as simple as more protein makes something "better" or "healthier". So today, we're trying some food that is JACKED and PUMPED full of extra protein to unpack the marketing, the taste, and if protein everything is all it's marketed to be. Poison punch. It's toxic. #016 Have you ever wanted to join a club but never felt like you fit in? Like, there's an in crowd, outfits, and a lingo you don't know?

Many of us have a very distinct picture in our minds when it comes to your typical runner: Someone who hops out of bed first thing in the morning without hesitation, laces up their sneakers, and covers miles on end without ever running out of breath or breaking a sweat. The reality? Running is an individual practice that looks different for everyone. In this episode, we hear from four trailblazers in the running space who are redefining what it means to be a runner and how nurturing our relationship with the sport is more important than how fast, how far, or how often we run. Badass Lady Gang, meet Sports Bra Expert and the founder of Bravolution- Laura Tempesta! Laura is the only American with a Master's degree in Lingerie Design, and the only person in the world with a custom-designed degree to study the engineering, design, performance and innovation of Sports Bras. In her previous job, she was Nike's Sports Bra Innovation Director. Today, she consults with brands to help innovate sports bras so that they actually support us. In this episode, we talk about everything from understanding how sports bras work, why innovation is moving at a snail's pace in the sports bra world, how to understand your body shape and size, why bra sizing is outdated and stupid, why removable pads are a thing, why sports bras are so expensive, to why it's taken so long for companies to make truly supportive and size-inclusive sports bras. If you do not know who Kelly Roberts is yet, you are in for a REAL TREAT! She's weird, hilarious, and no longer living life hating her body. We chat about fitness, body image, being praised for weight loss, running in just a bra aaaaand more. You're gonna love this one!More about Kelly:Kelly Roberts' pre-BadAssLadyGang fitness routine consisted mostly of struggling through the elliptical and trying to shrink her body. It wasn't until hitting post-college life, poised with a theatre degree, student loans, and the onset of panic, that she found running. Running forced Kelly to ditch perfectionism and stomp out fear of failure. Viral selfies from her first marathon struck a chord with women who could relate to the struggle, and soon the Badass Lady Gang was born.BALG is about enjoying life with a side of running. Kelly's philosophy measures success by the confidence gained, not pounds lost. If you aren't having fun, it's time to pivot. Over the years Kelly has appeared on the cover of Women's Running Magazine, joined Nike at the Women's World Cup, and created a worldwide movement called the Sports Bra Squad. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. There are several ways to connect with Kelly. The best is just hopping over to her website, it has all the info you need. Go HERE. Our guest is founder of the Badass Lady Gang, coach, and self-styled President of the 'I hate running club' Kelly Roberts. Obviously we just bang on about it being too hot to run the same as everyone else in the UK who cannot handle anything over 20 degrees. We talk about socks in the washing machine, sheep (again), running up hills, half chests, performance soap, and some running COVID news.
Kelly Roberts is a total badass. She's the head coach and founder of the Badass Lady Gang, creator of the viral #SportsBraSquad hashtag, and co-host of the Poison Punch Podcast. Kelly is all about female empowerment. She never classified herself as an athletic person growing up, but after graduating from college without a career and the sudden, tragic death of her brother, she got into the habit of working out just to numb herself. That's when she realized that she was drinking the poison punch — all that nasty shit and poisonous messaging that we're consuming on the daily. Trust us: Nobody gets through life unscathed by the toxic effects of diet culture. But through community, honesty, and the simple act of putting one foot in front of the others, Kelly was able to move past her body image issues. We talk about how horrible running is, why finishing a marathon is the best worst day of your life, how women use clothing as armor, and embracing your sports bras. We only get one life to live. It's too short to spend worrying about how we look. Come hang out and learn more about us at http://thebabesment.com/ (thebabesment.com)! Kelly Roberts is the creator of the "Run, Selfie, Repeat" podcast, the free fitness movement the Badass Lady Gang and body-positive initiative #SportsBraSquad. In 2009, Kelly's younger brother unexpectedly passed away, and struggling to manage her grief, she gained more than 75 pounds. With the weight gain came insecurities and a new fight to regain her sense of self. Then one holiday morning, in an attempt to cope with her brother's absence and manage her grief and anxiety, she decided to go for a run. “I didn't even reach the end of my block when, out of breath, I had to stop to walk. An hour and a half and three miles later I was home, feeling a sense of ease and clarity that I hadn't felt since his passing.” Running has given her a way to manage her grief and remove the crippling shame from her body image. Named by Women's Running as one of 20 women changing the sport of running and gracing the cover of the 2017 body issue, and by Competitor Magazine as one of 12 Influential and inspiring runners under 30, Kelly's mission is to inspire others to get embrace a healthy lifestyle and pursue the strongest version of themselves possible all while making them laugh hysterically. In this episode we discuss: -The Badass Lady Gang and how it evolved into such a powerful movement across the world -How she got into running and coaching -The types of runners she's connecting with -Growing her business -Combatting the pervasiveness of diet culture in our society (this is her mission) -Staying connected and motivated during the pandemic Connect at https://www.balgcommunity.com/.
