There will be no easing into the new season for the Wellington Phoenix when they open their 2020/21 A-League football campaign tonight. After their best regular-season finish in 2019/20, Wellington welcome defending champions Sydney FC to their temporary home of WIN Stadium in Wollongong. The Sky Blues were the only side the Phoenix didn't beat last season, losing twice and drawing the other meeting between the two.But head coach Ufuk Talay - who joined Wellington from Sydney FC at the start of last season - is undaunted by that record."Last season we played our best games against Sydney," Talay said."We play a very similar style. We let them go a couple of times when we had them by the throat."Sydney are a very settled squad - they've had the same squad for quite a while - but it's a great occasion to play the champions in the first game."The boys will definitely be up for it. We're very excited and can't wait to start."Covid-19 has forced the Phoenix to relocate to Wollongong, 90km south of Sydney, and while there's hope they may play some games in New Zealand if a transtasman travel bubble opens, plans are in place to stay in Australia until June. But in a marked change from last season, where the side also lived across the Tasman to complete their campaign, the players and coaching staff have sourced their own accommodation as they try to create as much normality as possible. Several have their wives or partners with them, with the likes of David Ball and Luke DeVere shifting their families to Wollongong. On the field, Talay has had to deal with the departures of a quartet of key players from last season with defenders Libby Cacace and Steven Taylor, midfielder Matti Steinmann and striker Gary Hooper all gone, along with utilities Callan Elliot and Callum McCowatt. The Phoenix mentor has proven himself to be a canny recruiter though, and has brought seasoned Israeli striker Tomer Hemed and age-group Australian international Josh Laws to the club, along with Kiwi Clayton Lewis and young attacker Mirza Muratovic. James McGarry and Matthew Ridenton also return for a second spell. Some of the standouts from last season in All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, dependable defender DeVere, combative midfielder Cam Devlin, Mexican star Ulises Davila and workhorse English attacker Ball are all back. One area where Talay wants to see improvement is in front of goal, with Wellington scoring just 38 goals in 27 games last season."We created a lot of scoring opportunities last season," noted Talay."If we can be more clinical this season - whether that's against Sydney or any other team - we'll be headed in the right direction."Talay's tenure as Phoenix coach could hardly have started in worse fashion, with Wellington losing their first four matches last season. But a nine-game unbeaten run, and a stretch of 16 matches during which they lost just twice, propelled the Phoenix to third on the ladder before Covid hit. Wellington were being talked about as title contenders, but failed to recapture that form when the season resumed and dipped out in week one of the finals."Pre-season has been good, playing some A-League opponents," said Talay."Also, not having to start from scratch has been very important to us, building on what we achieved last season."Having the core of the group has helped to continue the work we did last season and the new players have settled in very quickly."They're new faces but they've played alongside each other in the All Whites."Whether Hemed is fit enough to start the opening game remains to be seen, with the 34-year-old joining his new side from quarantine less than three weeks ago.New captain Davila may also be short of match fitness, having isolated upon his return. The Mexican was a pre-Covid standout last season and if he can recapture the form that saw him talked about as a potential Johnny Warren medallist, he'll again be a key cog in the side's attacking arsenal. The only player d...
The Wellington Phoenix's A-League season has come to a disappointing end, going down 1-0 to Perth Glory in their elimination final at Bankwest Stadium.A first-half strike from Joel Chianese was enough to settle the contest and despite intense pressure and firing off 32 shots to Perth's 15, the Phoenix were unable to find an equaliser and have exited the finals series at the first time of asking. On another day, one of Wellington's plethora of chances would have found its way into Glory's net, but a combination of well-organised defending, excellent goalkeeping and a fair amount of fortune saw Perth hold their lead and advance at the Phoenix's expense. The Phoenix will be left to rue their inability to finish their opportunities and nine weeks after jetting out of New Zealand's capital to continue the A-League season in New South Wales, their Australian adventure ended in anything but the fashion they had hoped for."Football's a cruel game sometimes," said coach Ufuk Talay."You dominate a game, create enough opportunities to win and it's a recurring theme from the last game against Newcastle. If we're not clinical in front of goal, we can't win games. We create, but we're just not clinical."We gave them one opportunity where they scored and then I think we totally dominated the game but we didn't score a goal to get ourselves back into it."The game's only goal came after 18 minutes when Chianese, who had scored twice for Sydney FC in a finals match against Wellington eight years ago, latched onto a neat through ball from Jake Brimmer, sped between two defenders and produced a tidy left-footed finish to beat Phoenix goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic from 15 yards.Going behind was the catalyst for an increased first-half intensity from the Phoenix who won a raft of set pieces and eventually attempted 17 shots before the break without opening their account. In particular, two goal-bound efforts from Ulises Davila were brilliantly saved by Liam Reddy, who ten years ago was the penalty shootout hero as the Phoenix beat the Glory in their first finals match. A decade on, and now with Glory, he was a formidable final barrier in the path of his former side.As the second half wore on, Wellington's attack became more and more desperate. Reno Piscopo flashed a right-footed effort just wide of the post, Steven Taylor was unable to direct a volley on target from a narrow angle and the outstanding Libby Cacace – in what will be his last game for the club – becoming increasingly more prominent, driving deep into enemy territory time and again to set up chances which went unconverted. As the game entered its final quarter, Jaushua Sotirio spurned a chance from a handy position after a run and cross from fullback Callan Elliot. There was also a suggestion of a Phoenix penalty when Tomislav Mrcela's high foot seemed to make contact with substitute Callum McCowatt, but referee Alex King saw nothing untoward. As time ticked down, David Ball's swivel-volley cannoned off the crossbar."I'm still very proud of the boys," said Talay."I think this is a great experience for our younger players playing these games. The more they play in these finals series, the more accustomed they get to it and the better experience they get from it."The win sees Glory advance to face Sydney FC in the second semifinal on Wednesday night. Melbourne City will meet the winner of tomorrow night's second elimination final between Brisbane Roar and Western United.Despite his first season as a head coach ending in this fashion, Talay said he still regarded the campaign as a success."I've thoroughly enjoyed it.""We've got a great bunch of boys. We started off on the back foot but the belief and the process was there and it got us to third on the table."That's our template and we'll build on that hopefully for next season."Perth Glory 1 (Chianese 18')Wellington Phoenix 0
Stefan Marinovic has come home. The Wellington Phoenix has unveiled the All Whites' goal keeper as their newest signing.Marinovic, who has had stints playing in Major League Soccer and the English Championship, says he's been following the Phoenix for a while."When I saw that the Phoenix were in need of a number one goalkeeper, I thought it was time I made my move back home."Marinovic replaces Filip Kurto, who has left to join new A-League side Western Melbourne. He says he isn't sure when he'll join his new teammates, as he only just signed the papers so he hasn't yet booked his flights.

The Carl Robinson era is over at Vancouver Whitecaps. He's certainly left an admirable legacy behind but it's time to get back to basics for the remainder of this season before the club heads into its most important offseason in their time in MLS. We look back at Robbo's sacking, the timing of it, what it means for the future, and especially how it may play out for the rest of this season. We also sit down for a chat with new, interim head coach, and a man we've known well for a number of years now, Craig Dalrymple. The dismissal of Robbo aside, there's still five games left to battle in this season, and while the playoffs may feel like a somewhat distant hope right now, they are at least still within touching distance and we chat with Stefan Marinovic about the mood of the group heading into them, facing Ibra and LA this weekend, and more. One man who we may see down the stretch is the last player Robbo brought into the squad, Marvin Emnes. We chat with the Dutch winger about where his fitness levels are at, when we may see him, and if he sees a future for himself in Vancouver at a Robboless Whitecaps. We go old school for this impromptu episode, recording it in our car! So the sound quality isn't up to our usual studio standard, but hopefully it won't take away from your enjoyment too much! We look back at the highs and lows of the match and the players' performances, hear from both head coaches, Chicago's Veljko Paunović and Vancouver's Carl Robinson, and chat about some of the latest Whitecaps news, from the continuing Davies to Europe rumours to the new U23 team the 'Caps are in the process of setting up. Vancouver Whitecaps head into their bye week (call it what it is) unbeaten in six and starting to find some attacking form. The defence is still looking a bit dodgy and they still struggle at times when they have a man advantage, but there's a lot more optimistic feel around the place than it was perhaps a month ago. We look back at the 'Caps five star win over Orlando on Saturday - the highs, the lows, and how some of the players are shaping up at this near midway point of the season. We also hear postgame comments from both coaches, Orlando's Jason Kreis and Vancouver's Carl Robinson. We have three interviews for you this week. First up, the 'Caps Kiwi keeper Stefan Marinovic talks about his injury, rehab, and when he expects to be back in the starting line-up. Then we catch up with Vancouver's latest homegrown signing, Simon Colyn, as we talk about his first professional contract, the Canadian championship, and more. We also have more Canadian Premier League chat for you this week as we look at the addition of teams in Winnipeg and Edmonton, and we chat with former Whitecap Marco Carducci about his hopes for the league and playing for his hometown club in Calgary.
