From new cancer drugs to batteries and robotics – China's top-tier growth companies are forging paths of their own rather than following in the west's footsteps. Investment manager Sophie Earnshaw names companies that have caught her eye and explains why being a long-term stock picker differs in China from elsewhere. Background:Sophie Earnshaw is a decision-maker on our China Equities Strategy and joint manager of the Baillie Gifford China Growth Trust. In this conversation, she tells Short Briefings… host Leo Kelion about a select group of Chinese companies breaking new ground, supported by the state's efforts to become self-sufficient in more of today's critical technologies and a leader in some of those of the future. Earnshaw also details how the “phenomenal rate” at which companies are born, scale and die in the country makes stock-picking a challenging task – making the access we have to company leaders, academics and other local expertise core to our mission of finding the best firms to invest in on behalf of our clients. Portfolio companies discussed include:- CATL – the battery maker whose products power electric vehicles worldwide and increasingly support the renewable energy sector- BeOne and Innovent Biologics – pharmaceutical firms developing the next generation of cancer drugs - AMEC and NAURA – semiconductor equipment makers enabling China to develop increased self-reliance in computer chips - Alibaba, ByteDance and Tencent – China's ‘big tech' companies, whose artificial intelligence tools are becoming embedded into people's daily lives- MiniMax – the AI startup rolling out video and agentic tools at a fraction of the cost of western counterparts- Horizon Robotics – the automated driving tech provider with its eye on an even bigger opportunity.
Devout Irish villagers in a North American settlement are ravaged by disease while a woman and her daughter are thriving amidst suspicion of witchcraft. The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw starts off with a bang with a mysterious witch coven's use of a young girl to remain prosperous during a harvest, while a local village is struggling. The movie does teeter and starts to lose cohesiveness with the backstory of the witch, her capabilities, and the lack of self-awareness for her purpose. The time period and character actions as it relates to the specific time the film is set is also confusing. With some strengths, the movie was better than expected, but with a lacking ending, the film doesn't set itself apart from the rest of the genre.Subscribe to our YouTube channel @thefinalpodcast Join the Discord | https://discord.gg/UFtVP243Follow us on Facebook The Final Podcast Follow us on Instagram @thefinalpodcastFollow us on X @thefinalpodeverMusic Credit: Karl Casey @ White Bat Audiohttps://www.youtube.com/whitebataudioWhat should we review next? She clarifies the relations between the tennants, explaining that the Catherine that Lockwood met, is the daughter of the Catherine who was Nelly's first mistress at Wuthering Heights, and that Hareton Earnshaw is her cousin, and the nephew of the deceased Catherine. Cathy is the last of the Linton's and Earnshaw, the last of his line too.Nelly continues her story of her early years at Wuthering Heights. When Catherine and Hindley were young, their father went on a trip to Liverpool, and came back with Heathcliff, bundled in his coat. Mr Earnshaw declared that Heathcliff would be raised as a member of their family. Both Catherine and Hindley resent Heathcliff at first, but Catherine very quickly grows to love him. Catherine and Heathcliff become inseparable, and Hindley's hate only grows, and he himself becomes unfavorable in his father's eyes. Mrs Earnshaw dies two years after Heathcliff's arrival at Wuthering Heights, and Hindley now alone in his dislike of the new family member.

Andrew Field, in his new book Rocking China (Earnshaw Books, 2023), documents one of the most exciting moments in the history of Chinese indie music. Through interviews with key players in these scenes over a period of two decades, Field explores the meanings of rock music in Chinese society as well as the many challenges and obstacles to the development of indie rock scenes in China. Highlights include a journey by rail into the heartlands of China with the hardcore rock band SUBS and legendary “rock godfather” Cui Jian.
