An army major completed the Triple Crown of open water swimming when he crossed the Foveaux Strait. Army major David Edgar spoke to Corin Dann.

Dr. David Edgar is a man of many talents. He's a Major in the NZ Army and currently Officer Commanding Physical Performance Squadron. He has an extensive background working in Rugby as a S&C Coach with Waikato, Chiefs, Manu Samoa, as well as over in Japan. He's also an accomplished marathon swimmer and endurance athlete, and will shortly look to complete the NZ marathon swimming Triple Crown by swimming the Foveaux Strait, having already completed the length of Lake Taupo and the Cook Strait. Plus, he's also on a mission to conquer the Ocean Seven. Edgar is doing all of this to help raise awareness for dyslexia and those with learning challenges, and he joined Piney to discuss his achievements. This time, 2-24 May 1923 is retold via press cuttings (thanks to our Newspaper Detective Andrew Barker), showing us that: Some corners of the press were mounting an anti-BBC campaign, complaining it was offering "poor fare". A few days later, other articles refuted that claim.  Some corners of the government were eager to renegotiate the BBC agreement, with the Sykes Inquiry under way to look at licences and obligations. Some corners of the live arts scene were worried their box office takings would be hit by radio entertainment, so decided to boycott Auntie Beeb. ...A few too many opponents! It begins, as far back as can be reliably traced, to Edgar's great-great-grandfather David Poe in the town of Dring, County Cavan, Ireland, about 75 miles north of Dublin. (There are going to be a few “Davids” in our brief re-cap, so get your score cards ready!) There is no record of David Poe's birth, only of his death in 1742. He was a farmer and overseer of Parrish roads in Kidallan in County Cavan. It is possible (but there is no definite proof) that he was descended from the Dr. Leonard Poe who was the official physician for King James I and later for King Charles I. David Poe, who married a woman named Sarah, gave birth to a son called John (date unknown). John Poe (Edgar's great-grandfather) married Jane McBride and immigrated to America sometime around 1749 or 1750. They lived briefly in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and then moved and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. David and Jane had 10 children. Their son David (Edgar's grandfather—still with me?) was born in either 1742 or 1743 before they came to America. Frank hopes that Bean will visit East Tennessee so they can go to some of the pancake restaurants in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.   Bean is gratified by how many fans of the Kevin & Bean show followed him to his podcast. Frank meets fans who wondered what happened to him after he left the station that they listened to in middle school and high school. Frank has a fan who texts him almost every day about either LakeFM or East Tennessee PBS Scholars' Bowl.  Bean asks if working on Scholars' Bowl helps Frank solve crossword puzzles. He also asks if Frank shares his crossword results like many people do with their Wordle scores.  Bean is shocked that Frank pays for a crossword puzzle subscription because Frank would never pay when they would go out for a meal with co-workers on the Kevin & Bean show.  Bean bought his house in New Orleans from Jay Thomas, who also did a radio show from that house. Percy Edgar was there right at the start of the BBC. One of the first voices, he booked the acts, managed the station, then became Director of the Midland Region. He was the most influential regional director from 1922 to 1948, far outlasting Reith and, well, every other early radio pioneer I can think of. His grandson, the playwright David Edgar, has dusted down Percy's memoir and reads it for us on this our final special. Hear all about the foggy first night, the first children's programmes (including Susan the Blue Cat with Yellow Spots), the dancer who wouldn't stop moving, Edgar's encounters with Reith, his double act with A.E. Thompson, and the involvement of Percy's son (David's father) Barrie, who helped inspire the first regular children's programme, then went on to produce Come Dancing, Songs of Praise and Muffin the Mule amongst others. Most of this episode has David read his grandfather's words, but now and then we have cameo clips from Percy Edgar and A.E. Thompson too.
