This interview is with Tom Danowski of the Oregon Wine Board. In this interview, Tom speaks about his work before wine with brands like Coca-Cola, Starbucks and Kraft Foods, and his introduction to wine when he took a position with Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington. He discusses his excitement at returning to the Northwest after growing up in Oregon, and his growing enthusiasm for learning about wine.From there, Tom talks about his role as president of the Oregon Wine Board and Oregon Winegrowers Association. We had the pleasure of spending time with Karl Weichold, the estate winemaker at Stoller Family Estate, located in the famous Dundee Hills in Oregon. Karl shares his story of how he became a renowned winemaker, starting with a degree in Biochemistry and Genetics from Texas A&M, to working at an Italian restaurant where he first fell in love with wine, to Texas wine country, and then to Oregon where he worked at 12th and Maple and Erath before landing at Stoller. In our conversation we talk about his thoughts on the art and science of wine making, what makes a “haunting” wine, and how the changing climate affects the choices they have to make every year - including during the very warm summer of 2023 in the Pacific Northwest. As the estate winemaker, Karl also has the ability to manage the grapes themselves, and we talk about how he has changed the amount of time he spends with the grapes versus the juice. On this episode of Covindustry- 19: We have the pleasure of speaking with Stoller Wine Group's Vice President of Consumer Sales, Tracy Timmins, who has been an active member of the Oregon Wine Industry COVID-19 Task Force. Tracy began her wine journey in 2000 at Columbia Winery in Washington and became fascinated by the many nuances involved in a grape’s journey from field to bottle. She kept close ties to the wine industry through part-time positions as she honed her sales and management skills in other industries. Tracy joined Chehalem in 2014 as part of the direct sales team. In 2019, she was promoted to Vice President of Consumer sales, overseeing the Chehalem and Stoller Family Estate brands.

Melissa Burr was raised in the Willamette Valley. After completing her Bachelor of Science degree, Melissa intended to practice naturopathic medicine before discovering her true passion was in wine. She studied winemaking and fermentation science at OSU and interned during harvest for several local wineries before becoming production winemaker for Cooper Mountain. In 2003, Melissa joined Stoller Family Estate as the winery’s first dedicated winemaker.  During our chat, Melissa talks about getting her dream job at Stoller only to find out she was pregnant with her first child. What it's like being in a male-dominated industry and how she balances her work and life.

When I embarked on my 16-month wine journey around the world, the first leg was up the west coast of the United States. While in the Willamette Valley region of Oregon, I was lucky enough to visit many of the most important and oldest wineries, including all of the wineries of my three guests on this episode of The Vincast. My first guest is winemaker at Stoller Family Estate, Melissa Burr, who is the only Oregon-native on the episode! The second winemaker guest is Dave Paige from Adelsheim Vineyard (one of the founding wineries of the region), who has been there for fifteen years! The final guest was Harry Peterson-Nedry, who established his Chehalem estate in the hills from which the winery takes its name in 1990, and has been one of the regions best ambassadors.
