On this episode of Covindustry- 19: We have the pleasure of speaking with Stoller Wine Group's Vice President of Consumer Sales, Tracy Timmins, who has been an active member of the Oregon Wine Industry COVID-19 Task Force. Tracy began her wine journey in 2000 at Columbia Winery in Washington and became fascinated by the many nuances involved in a grape’s journey from field to bottle. She kept close ties to the wine industry through part-time positions as she honed her sales and management skills in other industries. Tracy joined Chehalem in 2014 as part of the direct sales team. In 2019, she was promoted to Vice President of Consumer sales, overseeing the Chehalem and Stoller Family Estate brands.

This interview is with Neal Hulkower, of the Oregon Wine Press. In this interview, Neal speaks about how he got into wine, with his exposure dating all the way back to his childhood. Along with getting is PhD in applied mathematics and the many other jobs he had, Neal found that wine and math paired perfectly together, and decided to write about the two. He goes on to speak about some of his favorite articles that he's wrote, the responses he's gotten from his readers, and his time working at White Rose and Chehalem. Towards the end of the interview, Neal touches on his experiences working with Jesús Guillén, writing for AHIVOY, the future for the Oregon Wine Industry, and his future plans for his own writing career. Physicist, farmer and winemaker, Don Hagge produces VIDON wines from his Chehalem Mountains Estate Vineyard that he built with his wife Vicki (Vi-Don, get it?). Don brings science and engineering to the Willamette Valley wine industry, where he is intentionally unconventional – from the vines planted in the vineyard to the self-engineered wine equipment to the non-cork closures. VIDON produces between 1,500 and 2,000 cases each vintage of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier, Syrah and Tempranillo, all grown on the Estate Vineyard. Both the winery and the vineyard are LIVE certified, and VIDON practices sustainable farming and minimal intervention in the winemaking process including indigenous fermentations.

The indigenous peoples of this Oregon region called it "Chahelim", or "Valley of Flowers". Today, it's a valley of vineyards, where Harry Pederson-Nedry first planted Pinot Noir in the 1980's. He opened Chehalem Winery in 1990, and grew it into one of Oregon's most popular brands. Business partner Bill Stoller bought Harry out last year, and now it's time for the next generation at Chehalem led by winemaker Katie Santora.

With respect to all of the Oregon wine pioneers, I refer to the Ponzi's as the "First Family" of the Oregon Wine Industry. They arrived from Northern California in the late-1960's and put their small family to work on a farm outside Portland. Along the way, Dick & Nancy Ponzi founded Ponzi Vineyards, Bridgeport Brewing, and the Dundee Bistro. They passed the winery to their daughters, winemaker Luisa and Maria on the business side. Maria joins us to share her story of growing up in the Ponzi family.

Ken Wright is the founder and winemaker of Ken Wright Cellars, based in Carlton, Oregon. Ken discusses his work with Dick Graff in the 1970s, and then explains why he decided to move from California to Oregon in the 1980s to pursue winemaking in Oregon. He gives a thorough explanation of the different rock types found in state, and the attributes that different sites bring to a resulting wine. He also goes into depth in explaining his own winemaking evolution, from working at Panther Creek, to starting Ken Wright Cellars in 1994. Along the way, Ken makes several connections between the winemaking and the farming, and explains how one is often the result of the other. In particular, he talks quite a bit about the phenomenon of reduction in a wine, something he tries to prevent. Ken further describes several key vintages for Oregon Pinot Noir, discussing the attributes of those years and their impact on his own thinking. Take the demographic survey. When I embarked on my 16-month wine journey around the world, the first leg was up the west coast of the United States. While in the Willamette Valley region of Oregon, I was lucky enough to visit many of the most important and oldest wineries, including all of the wineries of my three guests on this episode of The Vincast. My first guest is winemaker at Stoller Family Estate, Melissa Burr, who is the only Oregon-native on the episode! The second winemaker guest is Dave Paige from Adelsheim Vineyard (one of the founding wineries of the region), who has been there for fifteen years! The final guest was Harry Peterson-Nedry, who established his Chehalem estate in the hills from which the winery takes its name in 1990, and has been one of the regions best ambassadors.

In the summer of 2012, I had the opportunity to sit down with Chehalem Winery's Wynne Peterson-Nedry.  It was a rare blast of hot weather in Oregon with temperatures rising into the high 90s.  It was a pleasure to stay in the shade and sip from the many dry white wines that are strongly featured in Chehalem's porfolio. Chehalem Winery, a family operation, was transitioning from Father to Daughter as well as experiencing a dramatic change in their label design.  I spent about a half hour with Ms. Peterson-Nedry and the highlights of that interview form Episode #46 of Understanding Wine with Austin Beeman. We spoke about the history of Chehalem Winery, where Oregon fits among world Pinot Noir regions, and why you should think about Riesling when you think Oregon Wines.
