In this episode, I'm opening up about the safety tools I used to ignore, the gear I swear by now, and the lessons I've learned (some the hard way). From eye protection and gloves to sun gear and steel-toe boots, I'm breaking down what works, what's overkill, and what might save you from a trip to urgent care. If you've ever found yourself 300 meters from the buoy on race day or struggling to maintain pace during training, there might be a high-tech solution out there for you. No magic bullet will ever replace good old fashioned swim training, but could FORM Smart Goggles be game changer? Or are they just a fancy new gadget, or even worse, a complete waste of money? Today I’m joined by Brenton Ford from Effortless Swimming to give us a no BS review of the FORM Smart Goggles. These high-tech goggles provide real-time metrics displayed right before your eyes as you swim but at nearly $300, are they worth the investment? You might know Brenton from his popular technique videos on YouTube or his coaching programs that have helped thousands of triathletes become way more efficient swimmers. With thousands of success stories under his belt, Brenton shares his professional and practical perspective on this product. There’s no sponsorship here, so rest assured this is his honest and unbiassed review. The Technology Behind FORM FORM Smart Goggles aren't your standard $40 purchase. They feature augmented reality that displays your swim metrics – pace, stroke rate, distance – directly in your field of vision as you swim. Think of them as a Garmin for your face, potentially offering more accurate readings than wrist-based devices since they're measuring from your head position. Real-Time Training Pros Brenton describes how the real-time data can be genuinely useful, particularly if you struggle with pacing. Many new swimmers go out too hard and fade dramatically, or they haven't developed that internal clock that elite swimmers possess. Seeing your splits in real-time allows you to adjust your effort on the fly, potentially making your training more effective. The Smart Goggles also offer technical feedback like head position correction, though Brenton cautions that this shouldn't replace proper technique coaching, as optimal head position varies between swimmers. The Cons Let's be honest – no tech is perfect, even at this price point. The bulkier design means you'll sacrifice some peripheral vision compared to your sleek racing goggles. If you're swimming in packed lanes or squad sessions, this could mean more shoulder bumps than you'd like. And while beginners might love the instant feedback, there's a risk of becoming too dependent on technology rather than developing that essential feel for the water that defines skilled swimmers. Perhaps the most frustrating reality? That premium anti-fog coating eventually wears off just like your regular goggles. Hot tip – a drop of baby shampoo can temporarily restore crystal-clear vision when you're in a pinch. As for the much-hyped "swim straight" feature for open water? While helpful, proper sighting technique remains essential for most triathletes. After all, technology can fail, but well-practiced skills stay with you through every race. Final Verdict So are FORM Smart Goggles revolutionary? For data-driven athletes, they offer unique training insights that might improve your sessions. For tech enthusiasts, they're certainly a novel addition to your kit. But as Brenton wisely points out, they won't replace good coaching or consistent practice. At their price point, consider them a useful tool rather than a miracle solution. If you're struggling with pacing or love analysing your metrics, they might be worth considering. If you're a beginner, your money might be better spent on technique lessons first. LINKS: Connect wth Brenton Website | Instagram | YouTube

Emma Thompson is a former collegiate and standout swimmer from the Pacific Northwest. For the latest episode of the podcast, I sit down with Emma on the eve of her 22nd birthday to learn about her life after swim—the transition from being a full-time athlete to a full-time working professional. This episode is for parents, young athletes and coaches working with teenage and twenty-something athletes. Emma's story and candor serves as inspiration and a cautionary tale. ET is the epitome of the remake—the embodiment of what it looks like to let go of one part of our identity, to pursue a new path, intentionally and thoughtfully making sure that our actions are in alignment with our priorities.Spirited, feisty, wise beyond her years and full of heart, Emma Thompson has been a source of inspiration for my young swimmer and I'm confident that in this conversation she will provide much needed perspective (perhaps a desperately needed perspective shift) of how we can best support young athletes as they chase their watery (performance) dreams, while fostering a strong sense of identity and self outside of the pool, track, playing field, or court. In today's podcast, I interview Casey Arendt, the marketing genius behind Snake and Pig, a company that's changing the game with its super-comfortable goggles and other swim products. During the show, I asked Casey the following questions: Can you tell me more about yourself and Snake & Pig? Where did Snake & Pig (the name) come from? One of the standout features of your goggles is the air-cushion gasket design. Can you tell us more about how it works and why it's such a game-changer for swimmers? You offer multiple styles of goggles, like the Basilisk and Junior Basilisk. Can you walk us through the different options available and who they are best suited for? Your goggles come with features like adjustable nose pieces and options for smaller faces. How important is it for swimmers to have a customized fit, and how do your products cater to that? Beyond goggles, do Snake and Pig offer other swim-related accessories or products beyond goggles? If so, which ones are must-haves for swimmers? When it comes to your target audience, who are you designing these goggles for? Is it mainly triathletes and competitive swimmers, or do you also cater to everyday recreational swimmers? Tamara is very excited about her new lamp, even if Rheannon thinks it is over engineered. John makes an appearance on the pod, and like a good dog doesn't bark but hangs out. Tamara lost a week of the workout challenge, so Rheannon decides her cooking challenge for the next week. Tamara is enjoying her canned boba drink, but is not sure what types of balls are in the boba. Rheannon has been working hard on building a new fence with new tools and a laser level. Probably should have used some safety goggles, but luckily no serious injuries. Rheannon does her best to motivate Tamara in the workout challenge by outlining what her cooking challenge will be if she looses again. Rheannon is fighting for her life with two kids adjusting to day lights saving.
In this episode we speak with Ellie Cole. Cole, of course, is a childhood cancer survivor whose right leg was amputated when she was 3. Within weeks of that operation, she was swimming as a form of rehab, before ultimately going on to become the most decorated Aussie female Paralympian of all time, with 17 medals over four games. In recent years she’s become a rising star in Australian sports media, as a trusted and charismatic broadcaster, not to mention staunch disability advocate, and now children’s book author. Cole recently became a mum to her little boy Felix, and her new book – “Felix and his Fantastic Friends” – is inspired by his adventures in early childhood, and her own in motherhood. Hosting this conversation – about everything Cole’s relationship with her twin sister to the complicated challenge of Paralympic classification – is a man who covered Cole’s final games in Tokyo in 2021 – Sydney Morning Herald sports journalist, Tom Decent.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Vestibular nerds this one is for you! Even if you're just a regular neuro nerd, you'll love this episode. Erin Gallardo interviews Patrick Esmonde of Vestibular First. Patrick shares the inspiring story behind the creation of Vestibular First and the company's mission to develop affordable, accessible tools to support clinicians in providing better vestibular care. Since necessity is the mother of invention, Patrick details the process of building the first prototype of Vestibular First goggles in a single night, leveraging his diverse technical skills and material purchased on Amazon. Goggles are essential in vestibular care for a number of reasons, which Patrick discusses as well as how inaccessible they have been until Vestibular First came to be. In addition to having goggles, educational tools that help clinicians explain to patients why they are experiencing dizziness and what is actually going on in their inner ear were lacking. Vestibular First has a strong desire for accuracy and accessibility in their education tools and realistic models so you don't need to use your imagination to understand what is actually going on. Throughout the conversation, Patrick's passion for the vestibular community shines through. He speaks of the dedication and unique challenges faced by clinicians in this field, and the immense satisfaction of knowing their work is helping patients regain their quality of life. Vestibular First's story is a testament to the power of innovation driven by real-world needs. By prioritizing affordability, ease of use, and educational resources, the company is making a significant impact in the vestibular rehabilitation space, empowering clinicians and improving patient outcomes. Cal Beattie defies expectations at every turn. At 90 years old, he's not just surviving—he's thriving as a competitive Masters swimmer who only started racing four years ago and trains alone in a small town in Virginia. He swims unattached with no team members and is amazingly disciplined. His journey from recreational swimmer to competitive athlete began after his wife passed away, when swimming became his solace and strength. What makes Cal's story remarkable isn't just his age, but his approach to training and technology. Despite being born before World War II, Cal uses Form smart goggles to track his performance data with precision that would impress swimmers half his age. His methodical training regimen consists of swimming every other day, always timing his 400-yard freestyle and analyzing the results afterward on his smartphone. "I'm a one-act pony," he admits with characteristic humility, but this singular focus has yielded extraordinary results.Cal Beattie shares his incredible journey as a 90-year-old Masters swimmer who only started competing four years ago after discovering he ranked fourth nationally in his age group while swimming recreationally after his wife's passing.• High school swim team co-captain in 1953, swimming 19.2 seconds for 20 yards freestyle• Swims every other day, focusing on a timed 400-yard freestyle using Form smart goggles that track his performance data• Eliminated his atrial fibrillation through swimming after doctors wouldn't give clear guidance about exercise• Maintains a heart rate of 134-150 during swimming and a resting heart rate of 58• Credits exercise, diet, and 8 hours of sleep as his secrets to longevity• Follows a disciplined nutrition regimen including a breakfast of grapes, flaxseed, lemon juice, olive oil, and baby spinachPerhaps most inspiring is Cal's health transformation through swimming. Twenty years ago, he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and put on blood thinners. When doctors wouldn't give him clear guidance about exercising, Cal made his own decision to start swimming regularly. The result? "After a year and a half, I went to the doctor. He said you no longer have AFib." Two decades later, his resting heart rate is an impressive 58 beats per minute—a testament to swimming's cardiovascular benefits at any age.Cal's disciplined approach extends beyond the pool. His meticulously consistent diet includes a daily breakfast of grapes, flaxseed, lemon juice, olive oil, and baby spinach. He prioritizes eight hours of sleep, recognizing its direct impact on his swimming performance. "When I get a good sleep, then I go to the pool and I usually get a much better outcome," he explains. These habits form the foundation of his longevity strategy, which he succinctly summarizes as "exercise, diet, and lots of sleep."Ready to be inspired by Cal's remarkable journey? Listen now and discover what's possible when you commit to showing up, regardless of your age. Whether you're a Masters swimmer yourself or simply curious about extending your prime years, Cal's story will change how you think about aging and athletic performance.Email us at HELLO@ChampionsMojo.com. The rollercoaster of medical school transitions is hitting some peaks, from the first nerve-wracking days of clerkships to the unglamorous realities of OB-GYN rotations. M3 Elvire Nguepnang, M2 Gizzy Lundquist, M3 Jeff Goddard, and M1 Katherine Yu open up about the leap from textbooks to patient care, beginning advanced clerkships, and just staying on the path—and why it's okay to feel a little lost. Along the way, they share their experiences with delivering placentas, unpack how seemingly minor lessons from preclinical years suddenly become crucial in the real world, and the new sensory ability they'd choose if they could.
Today, Fr. Gale and Kate reflect upon the graces they have experienced in these last weeks. They also reflect on the importance of keeping ones eyes open, looking for the good things of God.

Send us a textSwimmers are more likely to get eczema because of the drying nature of chlorine. 31 Million Americans have eczema, an itchy skin condition. What if the solution to your itchy skin is causing more harm than good? Join me, Kelly Palace, for an authentic look at my chilling encounter with topical steroids. It all began with a little tube of ointment prescribed for the eczema caused by my swimming goggles—a quick fix that spiraled into a full-blown nightmare. As I navigated through this ordeal, my reliance on stronger steroids grew, leading to a debilitating condition known as topical steroid withdrawal syndrome. My story sheds light on the often-hidden dangers of these treatments and challenges the notion that they are a cure-all for eczema and contact dermatitis. This episode is more than just a personal cautionary tale; it is a wake-up call for anyone who trusts topical steroids to treat their skin conditions. I reveal the sobering truth about how these medications merely mask underlying issues like allergies or stress and the lack of awareness in the medical community about alternative treatments. Through personal anecdotes and insights from medical professionals, we expose the urgent need for change in how eczema is treated, impacting millions of lives. Tune in to discover the real story behind topical steroids and why it's crucial to look beyond the surface.Kelly's experience with eczema due to swimmingThe role and risks of topical steroidsUnderstanding topical steroid withdrawal syndromeKelly's connection with Dr. Rappaport, DermatologistCo-Founding the International Topical Steroid Awareness Network www.ITSAN.orgEncouragement to seek non-steroidal alternativesPreventable: A Documentary about TSWS by Briana BanosEmail us at HELLO@ChampionsMojo.com.
