WTF is Mencía?

Ok, in this episode, all hell breaks loose! It starts out innocently enough - an introduction to the Spanish wine Mencía, a quick interview with a real listener, some wine in the news this week, but once we hit the second tasting, pure chaos. Proof that our tastings are real, and that our podcast is unrehearsed and, frankly, when we get to the tasting section, unpredictable. You have to listen to the very end to get the full experience. But, we digress. If you don't know the wine Mencía from the Galicia region of Spain, then it's time to get on board. Often compared to Pinot Noir, Gamay, or Cabernet Franc - which it was originally thought to be a clone of until DNA tests proved otherwise - it is a medium bodied, fruity, gastronomic wine (a fancy way of saying that it is meant to be drunk with food). Listen in to find out more about this wine, and lots of other crazy stuff. Italian Wine Adventure #18: Primitivo!

This crowd-pleasing wine from Southern Italy's Puglia region we think is underappreciated and not well-enough known - kind of like Puglia. Genetically identical to Zinfandel, Primitivo can be a rustic red, but when done well, it is fruity, juicy, and wonderfully balanced. There is a reason why Primitivo does so well in the heat of Southern Italy, and it's the same reason why Zinfandel does so well in California. It is an early ripening grape that needs to reach high sugar levels so that it can create the high alcohol required to balance the fruit and tannin. Primitivo is a fantastic wine for your next cookout, barbecue, or elegant dinner. We also spend a little time talking about 25 cent one ounce pours available from Olive Garden. There is no other reason to go to Olive Garden, but we can't blame you if you head there for the samples. Seifried Zweigelt 2024, Nelson. RRP $20.00 A distinctive, ripe, and exuberant red berry fruit bouquet with suggestions of plums, then violets, blackberry, and boysenberry followed by lees and a delicate positive reduction. A nicely dry wine on the palate with flavours of boysenberry and tart plums, violet and spice. Taut and still developing with best drinking from 2026 through 2030+. The Food: Zweigelt is a cross from St. Laurent & Blaufränkisch developed in 1923 by Dr Friedrich "Fritz" Zweigelt. It has the softness and elegance from the St Laurant and robustness and backbone of acidity and tannins from the Blaufrankish. This means the wine will work rather well with foods that a little vigour, but not too much. My suggestion is therefore a venison sausage with an onion jam and side of lyonnaise potatoes. Higher quality venison sausage has both and earthy quality and meaty quality without being gamy, there's always a little fat layer in the sausage as well. So the Zweigelt uses it's St Laurant parent as the contrasting fruity side to the earthiness and the Blaufrankish parent as the contrast and deeper fruit flavours to the fatty side. The wine is also softened by the cream used in the potatoes. The Season: 2024 Nelson had a very good growing season in 2024. There was expectation for an El Niño year —there was 3 La Niñas in a row— however it was a hot, dry summer season. It gave growers a great flowering set and yields were predicted to be high. So overall, a great season – there was however a frost event, but any damage was mitigated by the plants reactive repair mechanism. Truth is there was some variability across the region, yet I do not think wine drinkers will have noticed anything at all. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chablis is a wine we absolutely adore, and we think too many people are just unaware of what a beautiful and fantastic wine it is. If you are thinking, wait, I thought you guys hated Chardonnay, well, you're not wrong, but specifically, we dislike super oaky Chardonnays. However, we love, love, love Chablis, and we can't believe we have not done an episode on it before today. It is hard to put into words how much we love Chabils. If you are unsure about what all the hubbub is, or if you think we are exaggerating, we implore you: try some Chablis and drink along while you listen to this episode, and you will quickly change your mind about what a Chardonnay can be. Fruity, complex, elegant, crisp yet smooth, with wonderful minerality, Chablis is a wine almost without parallel, and should be at the top of everyone's wine list. Whether you are a Chardonnay lover or a Chardonnay doubter, this wine will make you a believer that there is so much more to Chardonnay than oak and vanilla. Pinot Noir in places like Chile and Argentina is still relatively new, and they are making exciting Burgundian-style wines in areas you would not expect. Despite most of the wine growing areas in South America tending to be warmer weather spots, they are discovering cooler climate oases where Pinot Noir can really shine. If you think Cabernet Sauvignon is the only Cabernet, you've got another think coming (as Joe's mom used to say). Cabernet Franc is on the rise, and it's time to get on the bandwagon. Most famously from the Loire Valley, Cabernet Franc has for too long been the understudy to wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, often primarily used as a blending grape. But today you can find Cabernet Franc as the star of the show, bottled as its own varietal from vineyards all over the world. Part of the reason winemakers are starting to make more of it is because it is a wine that does a great job of reflecting the place where it is from - the nerds call that terroir - and so winemakers like it because they can make their own unique versions from wherever they are. We'll break down what makes this wine different from Cabernet Sauvignon, and we taste and review a couple of Cabernet Francs to save you the trouble. Wine: Thomas Barton Reserve Saint-Emillion 2023 RRP $36.99 This is a classic wine option targeted at red wine drinkers who like a wine with some firmness yet plenty of fruit and lots of style. A bouquet and palate of Doris plums and blackberry, baking spices suggesting clove and vanilla, a lick of smoky oak (with a hint of bacon), then clay earth suggestions. The tannins have some grip, and the acid line adds freshness, offering an overall classic right bank flavour profile and texture. Core fruits also include a fleshy softness from the Merlot and dried herb with chalk-like tannins from the Cabernet Franc. The Food: I have enjoyed this wine in New Zealand, and also recently in France, with the best matches being pork belly with apple sauce with smashed potato, and Shepherd's pie. For vegetarians, a vegetable lasagne with lots of spinach in a rich cheesy bechamel works a treat. The season: 2023 in France was a challenge for many and not for others, it just depends where your vineyards are located. Dry and sunny in July with hot spells through August. A generally lower crop harvest. This also meant some stressed vines, but an overall decent harvest. The proof is in the wine. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A favorite wine of sommeliers, Ribolla Gialla is just different. Hailing from the beautiful Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, this wine even made it into the seminal and historically significant literary work The Decameron where the poet Giovanni Boccaccio listed Ribolla as one of the sources of the sin of gluttony. So that's kind of fun. What makes it different is that it is a medium-bodied yet crisp white wine that can be made into a wide variety of styles - including orange wine, sparkling wine, and, what we tasted and reviewed in this episode - a still dry wine. In a tale that is all too common, we nearly lost Ribolla Gialla by the 1970s, but brave and intrepid winemakers in the region have been slowly but consistently bringing it back - which is great for all of us. This is a “wow your friends” wine if there ever was one! Serve this wine, have them guess what it is, and then amaze them with your wine knowledge. Assyrtiko is sometimes called THE Greek wine - the most famous and iconic of Greek wines - and yet not enough people know about it or talk about it. Made for thousands of years, Assyrtiko is the rare white wine that keeps its wonderful acidity even though it is most often grown in warm climates. Keep that in mind, because you might start seeing it grown more and more as climate change impacts the wine industry. You can see this in the episode artwork, but on Santorini they use this cool technique where they train the vines to grow in circles, almost like a wreath, to protect it from the wind. What is also wonderful about this wine is that we found two great wines in this episode, and each was different from the other. One was more of a Chardonnay lover's wine, and the other more of a Sauvignon Blanc lover's wine. But both were worth seeking out. Douro Tinto is often called a “Steakhouse Wine” but that really doesn't do it justice. This fabulous wine from the Douro region of Portugal - an area most famous for the fortified wine Port - is a rich, smooth, and lovely drinking wine that needs to be on your table. Grown on very steep hillsides, the variety of the grapes in the blend can include up to 50 varieties, but the majority of the blend is usually Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz - which is the Portuguese name for Tempranillo, most famously in Rioja wines from Spain. Because of the wide-variety of grapes used, the blends can vary, but overall you can expect a lush, juicy wine with enough acidity that it pairs amazingly well with food. As the Cardinals head into Conclave to elect the new Pope, we head into our studio (ok, it's our basement, but whatever) to dig into a big, bold, red wine that links directly to the Papacy when it was in France. The Pape in Châteauneuf-du-Pape refers to, you guessed it, the Pope, and the name means “The Pope's New Castle.” But did you know that Pope John the XXII actually had this papal castle built on the land that makes this wine? Châteauneuf-du-Pape would not normally be a wine that would make it onto our podcast - not because it isn't good, but because it is a pricey wine, generally well above our $25 price cap. But for an occasion as rare and important as the election of a new Pope, we decided it was the perfect time to break the bank and taste and review this classic Grenache-focused wine with deep, historical roots. The real question is - are any of the wines we reviewed worthy of a papal blessing?!? Visually stunning, Tavel is not your typical rosé, and may be the rosé wine that makes your snobby “I don't drink rosé” friends change their minds! Sometimes called the 4th wine, and sometimes called the Pope's wine, Tavel is a different kind of juice. It is a very deep pink to red hue, sometimes described as watermelon or evening sunset, and the reason for that is because it spends more time on the skins than a typical rosé - afterall, rosé gets its color from red wine grapes. Wait, is all of this confusing you?!? Don't worry, just join us, and we will unravel all of these mysteries and tell you why Tavel is the rosé wine you need to be drinking this year. Italian Wine Adventure #16: Grechetto!

Wines from Umbria are often considered “delightfully undervalued.” Right now, that sounds especially appealing! Grechetto is one of those wines from Umbria that is flying under the radar, but it shouldn't be. This week, we dig into this wonderful white wine from Italy's “Little Green Heart” - and the exciting part is that we found two very different styles of it, one more like an oaky Chardonnay, and one more like a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, so there's a version out there for any white wine lover on your list. They have been making wine in Umbria for thousands of years, and many believe that the name Grechetto harkens back to the Magna Graecia period in Italy when the Greeks spread their empire. And, like many Italian wines, Grechetto fell out of favor in the middle of the 20th century before it made its comeback in the 1970's thanks to the efforts and hardwork of local winemakers. Trust us, it's worth checking out. Plus, these wines are from Oakville in Napa - one of the most revered wine growing areas in America. And our verdict? Well, we're not going to give it away here, but let's just say the final winner came down to the final bell. A TKO rather than a true knockout. Both Costco and Trader Joe's have an exclusive tier of their private label wines - Diamond Reserve for Trader Joe's, Signature Series for Costco - and they both charge a premium for them, but the real question comes down to this - is the higher price worth it? Now this is an exciting wine! We didn't have super high expectations going in - the name Kerner does not scream “adventure” - but we are telling you this is a white wine that is worth seeking out. Some call it one of the best white wines in Italy, and after tasting it, we agree, and so we are wondering why it does not get more love! It is a grape originally created in Germany as a cross between Riesling and Schiava/Trollinger to be a workhorse and handle cold weather, the Italians have made it into a rich, complex, and beautiful aromatic white wine. Confused about why this German wine is being made in Germany?!? Listen in and we'll tell you why! Both the wines we tried in this episode are excellent, and what is fun is that they are both a little different from each other - the Abbazia wine we would call adventurous and worth seeking out, and the winemaker is no slouch, having won the Gambero Rosso Winemaker of the Year in 2009. They Make Wine in Croatia?!?

When one of our listeners asked if we would be willing to explore wines from Croatia, we were a little hesitant - not because we didn't want to try them, but because we were worried that we would have a hard time finding them. Well, we were able to find some, and we are so glad that we did! Croatia is an area where they have been making wine for more than 5,000 years, yet despite their history, Croatian wines and wine varietals are not very well known outside of Croatia, nor are they super easy to find. That's in part because they don't produce a ton of wine, and because they don't export a lot of their wine, either. But, we bet if you have been to Croatia you have tasted the wine and thought - why isn't this more available in other countries? We loved learning more about winemaking in Croatia, and we had a wonderful time trying two of their highest regarded wines in Plavac Mali and Pošip, the latter of which has been called by some the greatest unknown grape varietal in the world! We had mixed expectations about Layer Cake Wines. On the one hand, Layer Cake was started by a winemaker who produces some of the most expensive and highest rated wines in the U.S. via their Hundred Acre label. On the other hand, “layer cake” is hardly a name one would give a sophisticated, serious wine. So which one is it? In this latest episode, we try to give Layer Cake wines an honest shot to impress us, reserving our judgment until we had the chance to taste them. We'll let you judge for yourself, but in our opinion, these are not good wines, or at least not wines for anyone who is serious about wine. And maybe that's the point. What a beautiful wine! You may not have heard of Greco di Tufo, and you may not be familiar with wines from Campania in southern Italy, but we are hoping that we can change that! Greco is an ancient wine grape, brought to the area around Naples by the Greeks thousands of years ago, that nearly went extinct in this area of Italy. Thankfully, some hard working farmers and heritage wine making projects kept the wine alive, and we are the lucky benefactors today. There are only four DOCG designations in Campania - that is the highest designation of Italian wine - and Greco di Tufo is one of them. The name Tufo comes from a tiny town, but also from the volcanic soil, called tuff, that gives Greco di Tufo its distinct and beautiful flavor. And the wines we tasted met that expectation. However, when a wine is a private label from a store like Trader Joe's - similar to Costco's Kirkland brand - we think you should expect to get 2X the value for the price. In the case of Trader Joe's Reserve wines, we think you kind of just get the value of the price on the bottle, which is disappointing. And, as usual, we don't pull any punches when it comes to reviewing these wines. We also dig into why Trader Joe's wines are popular, and do some sleuthing about where their wines come from, but we end up being pretty skeptical - you know, skep?!?-  about the quality of their production and taste of their wines. Holy smokes, did we find a great wine! If you or someone you know is a Sangiovese skeptic, just doesn't get what all the fuss is about Chianti wine, then you owe it to yourself and them to try this wine made from the Sangiovese Grosse grape, a mutation of the standard Sangiovese grape used in Chianti. You will become a convert. We promise! Hailing from the Montalcino region of Italy, just south of Siena, the same region that Brunello di Montalcino is from, is this fabulous wine made from the same grape as Brunello, but is a more affordable, and some say more approachable, cousin or sibling of Brunello. If you don't know, Brunello is one of the great wines of Italy, and this wine is no slouch either. Rich, complex, fruity, and balanced, this wine is fabulous with meat dishes, rich red sauce pastas and lasagnas, and spicy wood fired pizza. After listening to this episode, you will want to run to your local wine shop to load up on this wine! We don't often give such high scores to wines at this price point. Wines reviewed in this episode: 2020 Camigliano Rosso di Montalcino, 2021 Voliero Rosso di Montalcino.Send us a Text Message and we'll respond in our next episode!Contact The Wine Pair Podcast - we'd love to hear from you!Visit our website, leave a review, and reach out to us: https://thewinepairpodcast.com/Follow and DM us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewinepairpodcast/Send us an email: joe@thewinepairpodcast.com

Looking for show stopping sparkling wine to serve this Holiday? Then look no further than Sparkling Shiraz! This is a sparkling red wine - yes, you heard us right - an honest to goodness red wine made (usually) in the same way that Champagne is made. In case you are wondering, Shiraz is what they call Syrah in Australia, so they are the same wine. Like all sparkling wines, Sparkling Shiraz can vary from sweet to brut, but this is not your grandma's sweet sparkling red wine. Sparkling Shiraz can be spicy, complex, earthy, and tannic - exactly like the still Syrah / Shiraz you know and love. In this episode, we explore how Sparkling Shiraz is made, reveal that it used to be known as Sparkling Burgundy, and let you know how you should serve it and what food to pair it with. And, we have two pretty different Sparkling Shiraz wines that we taste and review so you can choose something your guests (and you) will love! Chenin Blanc is the “it” wine in South Africa, but is it worth the hype? Spoiler alert - if you like an oaky Chardonnay or white wines with some body, you may really like this wine! No one is really sure how Chenin Blanc got to South Africa, or why it has been called Steen there for centuries, but one thing is for sure - if you want to taste some of the best Chenin Blanc in the world outside of France, the first place you need to turn to is South Africa. South Africa makes more than 50% of all the Chenin Blanc in the world, and has a strong reputation today for making excellent wine - but it wasn't always the case. In this episode, we explore a bit of the history of Chenin Blanc from South Africa, and we taste and review two reasonably priced and easy to find South African Chenin Blancs which we bought at Total Wine (boo!) to see if they are worth your hard-earned money. WTF is Picpoul?

Picpoul translates to “lip stinger” in the original dialect, and this is not your typical high acid white wine. In fact, we were pretty surprised by this wine overall. It had more body (read: alcohol) than a typical zippy white wine, and more body as well. Although it is often called a summer sipper, this wine felt more like a fall wind-breaker. Picpoul is not a commonly grown wine grape, and does best in Mediterranean climates like where it is from in Languedoc in the south of France. We explore a bit of this wine and wine region's long history, and learn about how this wine is made and a bit about the winemakers themselves. If you are a white wine lover, or even if you are white wine curious, this is a great episode for you to expand your wine horizons.
