Wine. In a can. A hellish reality of tinny plonk? Or a convenient, eco-friendly, fun new format that's the future for wine? This is fun one, because our adventure starts with comedy legend (and proud French snob) Marcel Lucont. We're not only treated to an epic live rendition of his scabrous poem 'Wine in a Can' (compulsory listening for any wine lover) but also his delicious musings on wine and life more generally - including Beaujolais for breakfast. After picking ourselves up off the floor, we try to regain some dignity as we ask three questions: Is canned wine any good? Why should we buy it, if at all? And which ones are best?We exclusively reveal the results of a blind taste test by two Masters of Wine (ie us) to see if we can spot the difference between the same wine from a bottle and a can. And we report the highlights from a mega-tasting of 77 canned wines, giving a definitive verdict on this fast-moving scene.Along the way we hear from fellow Master of Wine Richard Kelley (The Liberator), Brixton Wine Club founder Louisa Payne and Morris Carr of 'craft winery' Attimo. And don't worry, we do ask the BIG questions. Like: is it OK to swig wine straight from the can? And is there a place for straws in this equation?!Thanks for tuning in. In this episode of BizNinja Entrepreneur Radio, Tyler Jorgenson sits down with Marian Leitner-Waldman, co-founder of Archer Roose Wines. Marian shares her unconventional journey from working in finance to building a successful wine company that aims to disrupt the traditional wine industry. Archer Roose was born from her desire to create high-quality wine in an approachable, sustainable format like cans, a concept inspired by her love for storytelling and connection. Marian's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to sustainability are evident as she discusses the challenges of innovating in an industry that is traditionally resistant to change, especially for women.Marian delves into the early struggles Archer Roose faced, from gaining trust among winemakers to finding product-market fit. The company took four years to launch its first product and spent significant time understanding consumer preferences. By focusing on transparency and a fun, non-intimidating brand, Archer Roose was able to introduce canned wine as a viable alternative to bottles, particularly targeting consumers who desire moderation and control over their consumption. The conversation highlights Marian's vision of making wine accessible and enjoyable for everyone, while also addressing larger environmental concerns.Toward the end, Marian shares her exciting journey of partnering with actress and businesswoman Elizabeth Banks, who became a co-owner of Archer Roose. Marian emphasizes the importance of maintaining product quality, investing in research, and ensuring that the wine inside the can is as good as the brand's marketing. Archer Roose is now expanding its presence in major retailers like Target and Sprouts, as well as being served at Regal Cinemas and Vail Resorts, continuing to push the boundaries of the wine industry. For more about Archer Roose Wines, visit ArcherRoose.com and explore their collection of sustainable wines that are both environmentally conscious and perfect for the modern lifestyle.
Hello, wine friends! In this episode, I'm thrilled to introduce you to Canned Wine Co., a brand making waves by doing things differently. Instead of the usual bulk production, Canned Wine Co. sources premium single-varietal wines from Europe's top vineyards, putting quality first. Recently, I had the chance to visit the stunning Loire Valley, where I met winemaker Lionel Gosseaume and tasted his premium Gamay—first from the bottle, then from the can. The incredible part? You could barely tell the difference! I even joined the harvest, witnessing the dedication that goes into each grape, and now I want to share that experience with you. To dig deeper into the art and science of quality wine canning, I'm joined by Ben Franks, co-founder of Canned Wine Co. And a special thanks to Coravin, our sponsor for this episode, for giving wine enthusiasts the chance to explore wines one glass at a time without uncorking the entire bottle. To honor the start of the Football season (tailgate season). Dennis and Denise are having a canned and boxed wine show. We have never tried a canned wine, so we are excited to see if they are good. These wines are becoming more popular because of their user-friendliness. See if Dennis and Denise will recommend any of these three affordable wines. One of these may be a great option for your next picnic, hike, or canoe trip. Tonight, our three wines include:Bota Mini Sauvignon Blanc. I purchased it from Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits for $5.99. This is a crisp and refreshing wine with notes of lime zest, lemon grass, citrus and melon, and complemented by a touch of minerality. This 500 ml package contains the equivalent of three 5.6 oz glasses and features a 12.5% alcohol by volume content. The wine is produced in Chile and comes in environmentally-friendly packaging made primarily from paper, a renewable resource, which contributes to a smaller carbon footprint compared to traditional glass bottles.Black Box Australia Chardonnay. Purchased at Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits for $5.99. This is a light and clean wine with hints of pineapple, green apple, tart lemon, and lemon blossoms with a touch of sweetness on the finish.Canned Oregon Red Pinot Noir. Again, purchased at Wall to Wall Wine and Spirits for $5.99. This wine comes from the Stoller Family Estate, a family of veteran winemakers with deep roots in Oregon's Dundee Hills. Light and lively, this crushable red is filled to the brim with ripe red cherries, raspberries and hints of rose petal. It's perfect for sipping in the park or by a cozy fire.Next week we are tasting Malbec from Argentina. The three wines we will taste include:2022 Kirkland Signature Malbec, purchased at Costco for $6.99. 2022 Zuccardi Serie E, it was purchased at Costco for $11.992022 Wapisa. This was purchased from Costco for $14.99.
Sip, share, shape our podcast!Do you think bottles are the only way to package wine? We're here to change the way you think about alternative packaging for wine!In the world of wine trends, packaging for wine may not be the sexiest, but we think there are some pretty cool things going on! We're not talking about ordinary wine storage boxes or wine shippers, we're talking about alternate packaging solutions for bringing wine directly to you, your table, and your glass.Wine boxes have been around for years. There's nothing really new about the concept, but there's more to the wine pouch in a box than meets the eye. Gone are the days of cheap party wine in a box, and hello are the days of some really great wine right on your wine shop's shelf. In this episode, we take Alileo's Grillo and Syrah to task. Gold stars all around! I'd take this for a party gift any day!As for the box concept, cardboard is lighter for packaging wine than glass wine bottles, Shipping boxes filled with wine pouch bags can fill every gap in a wine shipping container. Bottles, however, result in shipping a ton of empty space even using lightweight pulp wine shippers or other environmentally friendly wine packaging. Moving beyond wine in a box, let's talk wine in a can. Not beer, but wine! More and more winemakers are taking their custom blends and prized wines and shifting away from bottles to cans. Nomadica wines are taking custom packaging to new heights. With canned wines, 3-liter boxed wines, and more, this trend-forward brand is changing the game in wine packaging.Wine bottles aren't being left behind. While at a glance, bottles may not look different, there's a trend to reduce the weight of wine bottles. We tested this ourselves and found two different bottles of bubbles were nearly 10% different in weight! Translate that to a case, a pallet, a container, and the weight savings add up quickly. Reducing the carbon footprint in the wine industry is a hot item. Lighter wine bottles are a step in the right direction.Bottle sizes play a part in the wine packaging topic. From splits to half-bottles, Jeroboam to Midas, there are numerous options beyond the traditional 750ml. We might not be able to lift or pour wine from most of them, but we're willing to give it a try!Alternate packaging for wine is no longer a symbol of cheap, low-quality wine. Plop any of these wines in gift boxes or bags with tissue paper and gift away! Your friends will thank you!Support the Show. Thanks for joining Somm Women Talk Wine! So fascinating. Dr. Gavin Sacks took a momemt from his research and teaching schedule to sit with Wine Talks and discuss the intersection of art, science and the environment as it relates to wine. We don't think of the academic reqiurements when we disuss wine. Talking wine is usually about swriling and sniffing; maybe a story of the winemaker. We can often get into the weeds on what we taste or sense in a wine. And that might have a whole lot to do with what Dr. Sacks is working on. The advent of environmental concerns around the carbon footprint of all the packaging we consume on a daily bases has found its way into the wine industry. Dr. Sacks spends his research and class time, experimenting with and teaching the value of alternative wine packaging choices that could reduce the carbon footprint of wine in the future. Wine Talks was honored and inspired to have Dr. Sacks on the show.

It's the most wonderful time of the year - football season! And football season means tailgating, and tailgating means wine! Wait, what?!? Did we say wine? You bet your sweet pigskin we did! While beer may still be the beverage of choice for most, we think wine is a perfect fit for all of the food and fun that you find at a tailgate - whether at the stadium or at home. And canned wines - which are growing in popularity and availability - are a perfect choice because they are easy to pack in and out, won't break, and don't need a corkscrew! In this episode we had a ton of fun trying 5 - that's right 5 - canned wines, including two whites, two reds, and a rosé so that we could give you a wide variety to choose from to fit any palette, and to pair with tailgate foods. We also talk about the most popular tailgating foods and which of these wines will pair the best with each. We think we found some real winners among these cans - and a few we think you might want to stay away from! And, we give you some important information about how much wine is actually in a can - it's more than you think, so don't say we didn't warn you! Wines reviewed in this episode: Creamery Chardonnay, House Wine Sauvignon Blanc, 14 Hands Hot to Trot Smooth Red Blend, Underwood Pinot Noir, and Oak Flat Vineyards Rose'Contact The Wine Pair Podcast - we'd love to hear from you!Visit our website, leave a review, and reach out to us: www.thewinepairpodcast.comFollow and DM us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewinepairpodcast/Send us an email: joe@thewinepairpodcast.com
These days, you cannot miss the canned aisle in your favorite grocery store. It seems to be taking over more real estate of the wine aisle each month. The category is rather cluttered with competitors..that didn't seem to daunt Jessica Hershfield. Jumping in with two feet, Jessica spent time researching the market, making a couple of mistakes but eventually launching her brand of 250ml canned wines. But the proposition is unique. What she found missing in the space was vintaged, appelated canned wines; wines of reasonable distinction among the crowded shelves. She is sending them direct to the consumer and has landed the larges distributor in the country (Southern Glazer). Wait until you hear that story. You will find her charming and articulate. Cheers.

In short: Kristin Olszewski is a badass. She went from Harvard Med School to realizing that wine is life and very quickly learned the ropes, then became a sommelier and wine director around the US. Eventually (and very quickly), she started her own sustainable canned wine company: Nomadica Canned Wines and is adding Founder/CEO to her very long and impressive resume. In this episode, we chat about her journey to wine, somm life, and the tools to becoming a successful CEO. She's been such a great friend and guide in my own wine journey, so I'm really excited to share her perspectives with you all and hopefully she can inspire some of you to start something amazing!Oh and don't call her a “female founder”. We got a question in for our American Mamas...Dear Mamas, are you going to celebrate Women's History Month by drinking canned wine?
The Wine Pair returns to our Cork Free series, and in this episode we taste and rate some canned Pinot Noirs from California and Oregon. We discuss why a red wine is an interesting - and maybe not ideal - choice for a wine in a can, and the pros and cons of canned wine. In addition to giving our completely honest reviews of these wines (and when we say honest, we mean honest), we also try a pairing of these canned wines with Chef Boyardee lasagna. Let's just say we're not sure it is a match made in heaven! Wines reviewed in this episode: Freeseeker Pinot Noir in a can, Outspoken California Pinot Noir in a can, and Underwood Pinot Noir in a can.

Happy Holidays! This episode came out a little earlier for everyone to sit around the fireplace and listen to with the family during their Christmas dinner! Each of us bought a different can of wine and ask the question we've all been wondering, is canned wine any good or is this PC culture gone too far? On this episode, we talk about the America v. Patricio: the human trafficking incident in Georgia. We also give our feelings and opinions on the accident that killed four people that sentenced the driver 110 years in prison. And we very lightly lightly talk about Christmas. Thank you for all listening, and enjoy the holidays with your loved ones!

California joins the list of 15 states with a temporary reprieve. Governor Newsom signed the bill which ends December 31, 2026. For the list of the others, follow the link in the show notes to the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. https://www.distilledspirits.org/?s=to+go+cocktails&submit= Many of the ‘Top beers' of the year are made by brewers, judges, and experts, but what does the general public think? Well, the closest to that may be the list from Untappd (you can friend me at https://untappd.com/user/BoozeBaconBoy). Some might be surprised at Tripel Karmeliet from Brouwerij Bosteels, but then reassured that Miller Lite, Heineken, and Yeungling Lager made the list and Guinness topped it! https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2021/12/the-10-most-popular-beers-in-the-world-in-2021-according-to-untappd/ And what do you do if you want to have a drink or two, and don't like craft beer or seltzer and one bottle of wine is just too much? That's probably where Canned low-alcohol wines have come in and they're expected to gain a lot of traction in the coming year. Canned wines are certainly fairly new, but canned wine with a 5% - 6% ABV is a growing global trend, being driven by the younger American market's palates. The story also has a link to boxed wines making a comeback https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2021/12/low-alcohol-canned-wine-rtds-set-to-boom-in-2022/ And a bonus fight! That thankfully didn't happen. Bud Light and Yuengling almost had a tiff, but thankfully cooler heads seem to have prevailed. It all stemmed from an alleged trampling of the trademarked phrase “next generation of light beer." This is the best non-fight between the two since Yuengling said “Get off my lawn." about two years ago! Pitcher This! Podcast: Manufacturing & CPG Stories with Darren Fox
Hilary Cocalis is the Founder and Chief Go Getter at Sipwell Wine Co., a premium California canned wine brand. She's also the Principal at HilCo Brand Consulting and a Strategy Consultant at BEXBRANDS. With over a decade working with beverage brands, Hilary knows what goes into making a great company and a delicious drink. Before founding her own business, Hilary served as the Vice President of Marketing at Ballast Point Brewing Co. During her time there, she helped grow the brand to a $1 billion acquisition by Constellation Brands. She also has experience in digital media, design direction, and product development in addition to her background in marketing. In this episode… Marketing is an essential component for beverage brands. We all know that the presentation and branding of your product are essential for success. But, did you know that distribution can be just as important? After all, before anyone can try your drink, it has to be available to them first. If anyone knows the importance of both, it's Hilary Cocalis. Hilary has spent much of her career in the beverage industry as a marketer. During her time at Ballast Point Brewing Co., she helped the company grow into a national brand and a $1 billion acquisition. Now she's brought all of that experience towards her own brand, Sipwell Wine Co. Today, she's here to offer some of those same principles to you. Darren Fox sits down with Hilary Cocalis, the Founder of Sipwell Wine Co., to talk about distribution and marketing for her canned wine brand. The two go over her story and how she's overcome the obstacles of starting her own beverage company. They also go into detail about the selection process for different types of wine and how she went in a different direction for carbonation. Hear the rest by checking out this episode of the Pitcher This! podcast.
In this episode, The Wine Pair tastes and reviews three sparkling rose' wines in a can. What did you say?!? A can?!? YES! This is fun wine, and perfect for a weeknight celebration! While on an anniversary trip in Honolulu, Joe and Carmela visited an ABC Store, found some canned sparkling wine, and decided to try it. Mind blown! The Wine Pair also talk about the magic of the 8th floor pool at the Halepuna on Waikiki, the flavor profiles of sparkling rose', and the wonders of wine in a can. Consider the following. Cans don't break! Cans are easy to carry and store! Cans don't require a corkscrew! Wines reviewed in this episode include Underwood Sparkling Rose', House Wine Sparkling Rose', and 14 Hands Unicorn Sparkling Rose'. You have to listen to the episode to find out, but you might be very surprised to find out that the cans fared very well in the tasting and reviewing! Find out which of these taste like a Jolly Rancher, which tastes like grapefruit, which tastes like the syrup of canned fruit, and which tastes like strawberries and cream. You even get a quick lesson on how to get red wine stains out of your Seahawks hoodie.
Wine in a box was enough to send some people into a fit.And then there were screw tops and now wine in cans to really tap into the millennial market.Joiy Wines was the first New Zealand winemaker to export wine in a can, shifting about 700,000 tins around the world per year. But that could soon be 7 million with their expansion plan in mind.Joiy Wines winemaker co-founder Chris Archer told Tim Dower the wine industry is quite adaptive, especially with packaging in mind.“That's gonna be a real mindset, not just for the wine industry, but for all industries producing goods that we all have to be mindful of the packaging and the end use and the circle economy of that.”LISTEN ABOVE
Allan Green Canned Wine is the subject today, as Allan Green is here to talk about the International Canned Wine Competition on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Allan Green is the founder and former owner of Greenwood Ridge Vineyards. Allan Green sold Greenwood Ridge Winery to the Wilson family, it is one of two wineries that they have in Mendocino Co. He started it in 1980 and sold in 2017. He made wine for 37 years. He was one of the pioneers of Pinot Noir and he also made Riesling. His background is in graphic design, but he has been running the Mendocino Co. Fair Wine Competition for 40 years so when the idea came to do the International Canned Wine Competition, he knew how to do it. Now they just completed their third annual competition. They had 335 entries from 16 countries, including India, places where you don't expect to find wine at retail. Getting the international entries through customs was hard. 85 Gold medals out of 335 were awarded. He has collected wine cans since 1980. Dan Berger explains that the French were putting wine in cans since the late 1940s. About 1975 or 1980, the plastics industry came up with a plastic liner for these cans. Today's can liners are quite perfect, they put a good seal on the can. Dan Berger has brought a cellar dweller today, which he says is a little bit past its prime. He thought he would open it about 2015 and the extra years haven't really helped. But they all say the second taste is better. It is a 2006 Arrowood Côte de Lune Blanc, made of Rousson, Marsane, Viognier and Grenache Blanc. It is a little bit oxidized but the flavors are still intact. "About 6 to 10 years in, these wines are really gorgeous." They have the best of show white wine, which was a surprise, from Allied Wine Works on the central coast, a Grüner Veltliner. They agree that you should pour this into a glass, not drink from the can. Allan explains that they let the wines breathe for a few minutes after opening, before tasting at the competition. This has the steely minerality of the varietal. Harry Duke says that he could never have told that it comes from a can. And Dan points out that it is so well protected from oxygen, that the wine needs a few moments to breathe. You have a fresher and younger wine than from a bottle. Wine in cans is very convenient. The portions are small enough that you don't have to put it away with a cork. It's easy to fit the cans into a loaded fridge or ice cooler. The results of the International Canned Wine Competition are online, from 2019, 2020 and this year. Dan found that the Tin Pony can from Iron Horse was excellent. Iron Horse is a major prestige label. Joy Sterling of Iron Horse, who was on the show not long ago, has launched the Tin Pony label for canned wine. The early Chardonnay grapes are already coming in, in Sonoma County. Wineries that are picking for sparkling wine production are almost finished. Allan describes the competition, which was set up like any other. One day they did 127 spritzers and coolers, in about 3 hours. The whites and reds had about 80 a day to taste. Allan also brought the best of show red, a Pinot Noir from Oregon. The size of the can is 375 ml, half a bottle. Dan says you can tell this wine was aged in barrels before it was put in the can. Dan tasted about 130 wines in a day at the Mendocino County Fair competition. Dan Berger remembers a great line from Donine Dyer, a former winemaker of Domaine Chandon, who said, "Viewing a wine competition is like going to someone else's high school reunion." The public is never allowed into a competition. Dan was judging once when the public was invited and it was not easy at all and not to be repeated.
