After working on harvests around the globe, Alicia returned to California to work at Chateau Montelena and Sonoma Cutrer. In 2021 she took on the role of Winemaker at Banshee Wines, producing wines that taste much more sophisticated than their price point would suggest. At Banshee, Alicia can indulge in both sides of her winemaking personality: Bordeaux style, in your face, big cabs and the more nuanced Burgundian pinot noirs and chardonnays. (l-r) Dan Berger & Dave Ready Jr. Dave Ready Jr., winemaker at Murphy-Goode, is our guest on California Wine Country today. Harry Duke is sitting in for Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger is also in the studio. Dave's father was part of the team that founded Murphy-Goode in the 1980s. At the time their wines were based on vineyards managed by Tim Murphy and Dale Goode. Dave Ready Jr. is now the winemaker. The founders met at a new year's eve party in the mid-'80s. His father loved golf and would just as well put a golf course on the property. After his father returned from Vietnam in the late '60s, he went to college and met a friend who knew about wine. They started a wine tasting group, which was rare for back then. His father then founded a company that was the only distributor in Minnesota for premium California wines. So he had a vast network and a successful business. The Long and Winding Road that leads to Wine When Dave was visiting California, he called his dad who was based in wine country. His father suggested he get a job, after he had spent the summer seeing the Grateful Dead. So he worked the harvest in 1988. It paid $7 an hour and at the time for him it was a chance to stay in California and to be able to see concerts in California. After the 1989 harvest he enjoyed it more and started to stick around. He decided to stay in the wine industry, thinking it might be in sales, same as his father. "He used golf as a sales tool." Once he decided he wanted to do this, he took courses at UC Davis and got a series of jobs. His band, Mango Jam, was a lot of fun. Dan Berger's Cellar Wine of the Week This week Dan Berger has brought in another wine he completely forgot that he had. It is a 2008 Bogle Riesling, from their small production or Riesling. "This wine is over the hill but you can't really kill Riesling..." Dan Berger describes how the maturity of it comes from the "petroleum" component that older Rieslings have, gives it character. Dave Ready Jr. knows the winemaker, Eric Aafedt. Dan Berger tells the story of Dale Goode and Tim Murphy, who were pioneers, in the '80s who really knew how to match varieties to land in the Alexander Valley well before other people realized its potential. He also tells how they never rested on their laurels, they were always looking for ways to make their wines better and better. Dan Berger tasted an Alexander Valley Cabernet in 1976 and had not heard of Alexander Valley. The Chateau Montelena that won the Judgement of Paris was an Alexander Valley wine. Some of their fruit does not come from Alexander Valley, however. The fruit comes from Monterey and Santa Barbara. Since they sold Murphy-Goode to Jackson Family Wines, they have access to great vineyards all over California. This Chardonnay is about 75% steel and 25% oak. He thinks that even if the oaky flavors are not part of the variety, it is so common that people expect it. Dan Berger likes its freshness. This is a 2020. They will bottle the 2021 on Friday. Dave says he is going for a Chardonnay that would be like an after-work cocktail, fresh and refreshing for drinking and pure enjoyment. A Really Goode Job Dave also describes a very interesting initiative called A Really Goode Job, where they offer an incredibly generous package to one lucky winner for a full time job with a great salary and a place to live among the vineyards. The company has hired some extraordinary people and this year they are doing it again. The application is a 60-90 second video explaining why you want the job. Last year they had 7,000 applicants. Before the end of the show they taste the 2020 Murphy-Goode Sauvignon Blanc and a very well-informed discussion of residual sugar ensues. Finally they taste a fascinating 2018 Murphy-Goode Zinfandel, called Liar's Dice. Also this one, the fruit comes from Alexander Valley. Dave blends from 2-4 percent Petit Syrah "to give it a little extra backbone," and "it has a nice jammyness to it."

Today Tom Simoneau has brought Tim Bell, winemaker at Dry Creek Vineyard, to be our guest on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon. Harry Duke is also in the studio and Dan Berger is away judging the Mendocino wine competition. Tim Bell was a guest on California Wine Country in an episode that first aired on March 22, 2017. He was here again along with Dry Creek Vineyard founder David Stare in this episode from May 29, 2019. Tim Bell begins by telling his personal history in the wine business. He worked for a wine retailer in Southern California called Liquor Barn, where he became acquainted with wine. He later attended UC Davis and he has been working in the business for 30 years now. Dry Creek Vineyard was founded by David Stare in 1972, part of a wave of new wineries that brought modern winemaking to California, including Chateau Montelena, Stag's Leap and Burgess Cellars. They are known as the Class of '72. They are planning some big parties for their 50th anniversary next year, along with several other North Coast wineries.  “Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc continue to be staples for us today,” says Tim Bell. Dry Creek is best known for Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. They are taste the Dry Creek Vineyard 2020 Sauvignon Blanc. This sells for $20, which is a bargain for a good one. Next they taste a Dry Creek Vineyard 2019 Chardonnay, which is sold out. Steve, whose middle name is Chardonnay, loves it. They only make about 700 cases of this wine. They only pick from their favorite spots. In another month the 2020 will be out and it will be at least this good. Their best well known wine is Fumé Blanc which is a mix of Dry Creek and Russian River Valley grapes. This wine is a second take on that, but with only Dry Creek fruit, and they also use some Sauvignon Musque and Sauvignon Gris. It has taken a few years for the vineyard to reach maturity but it's there now. Tom Simoneau says it's not too green, new mown hay. Tim Bell tastes ripe Meyer lemon, lime and a hint of peach or apricot. They do a limited amount of barrel fermentation but they don't use new oak. They use older barrels, which may have held Chardonnay for a few years. They also use Acacia wood barrels, which have floral and minty notes. They also use 2-3% chestnut wood barrels, which add a vanilla cream quality David Stare was quite a pioneer. Tom Simoneau says that we are in the middle of the golden years of winemaking and Dave is a friend. David Stare founded the winery and his daughter Kim Stare Wallace is President now of Dry Creek Vineyard. She is on the cover of Wine Spectator this issue. Dry Creek Vineyard is open outdoors by appointment only, since Covid. They are located on Dry Creek Road at the corner of Lambert Bridge Road, right across from the Dry Creek General Store. Harry Duke asks what has to happen to a used barrel, before it can be used again. Tim Bell describes the cleaning process. You would never put a white wine in a red barrel. After 3 years, the oak flavor is used up. So a neutral barrel is its own individual fermentation tank. Especially with Sauvignon Blanc, the fermentation happens in one big steel tank. But with barrel fermentation, different barrels will have different characters, which add different layers of complexity Next they taste a 2018 Dry Creek Vineyard Estate Zinfandel from the Wallace Ranch. This single vineyard zinfandel is from a vineyard right across from the winery. They make a wine called Heritage Vine Zinfandel that sourced budwood from an old Zinfandel vineyard, the Mazzone selection. They have it in 4 different estate vineyards, and each has its own personality. It's 95% Zin and 5% Petit Syrah. It's available only through the winery or the wine club. Then they taste the second Zin. Tom Simoneau noticed the smoothness of the first Zin, this one is the 2019 and it's a little softer. It was a cooler vintage, says Tim. This is a little lower in alcohol compared to some other big Zins.

First, thanks to listener and Patron Rafael C. for the podcast topic this week! It is the 45th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris: a tasting of California and French wines, organized but the late Steve Spurrier, that opened the door for wines from the US and all over the New World to be recognized for their excellence. We should raise a glass to him, his partner Patricia Gallagher, and to journalist and author George Taber, all of whom made this event so very significant.  Here's a quick recap, all of which we cover in the podcast... In 1976, an English wine shop owner, Steven Spurrier, and the director of his adjacent wine school, Patricia Gallagher, wanted to introduce members of the French culinary elite to the wines of California. The goal was to show them the new developments happening across the world in wine (and to get publicity for Cave de la Madeleine and the Academie du Vin -- genius marketing!).   Photo: Berry Bros & Rudd Wine Blog In preparation, Spurrier and Gallagher researched, tasted, and carefully selected 6 boutique California Chardonnays and 6 boutique Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines. They brought these wines to France and on May 24, 1976 conducted a three-hour tasting that (unbeknownst to them) would change the wine world forever.   Nine French judges sat at the Intercontinental Hotel in Paris and sipped 6 California Chardonnays with a group of four high end white Burgundies (100% Chardonnay). They followed that up with 6 California Cabernet Sauvignons and four of the best Bordeaux from the Left Bank. The results were as follows:   Chardonnays 1973 Chateau Montelena, Napa Valley (family owned) 1973 Roulot Meursault Charmes, Premier Cru, Bourgogne 1974 Chalone Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountains (owned by Diageo) 1973 Spring Mountain Vineyard, Napa Valley (owned by an investment company) 1973 Joseph Drouhin Beaune “Clos des Mouches,” Premier Cru Bourgogne 1972 Freemark Abbey, Napa Valley (owned by Jackson Family Wines/Kendall-Jackson) 1973 Ramonet-Prudhon, Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru, Bourgogne 1972 Domaine Leflaive, Puligny- Montrachet, “Les Pucelles”, Premier Cru, Bourgogne 1972 Veedercrest Vineyards, Napa Valley (shut down for 20 years, resurrected in 2005 under a sole proprietor) 1972 David Bruce Winery, Santa Cruz Mountains (family owned) Photo: National Museum of American History -- Smithsonian  The Cabernets/Bordeaux 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Napa Valley (owned by Chateau Ste. Michelle/Antinori) 1970 Château Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux 1970 Château Haut-Brion, Graves, Bordeaux 1970 Château Montrose, St-Éstephe, Bordeaux 1971 Ridge Vineyards, Monte Bello, Santa Cruz Mountains (owned since 1987 by a Japanese pharmaceutical company) 1971 Château-Leoville-Las-Cases, St. Julien, Bordeaux 1971 Mayacamas Vineyards, Napa Valley (family owned) 1972 Clos du Val, Napa Valley (family owned) 1970 Heitz Cellars, Martha’s Vineyard, Napa Valley (investor owned) 1969 Freemark Abbey, Napa Valley (owned by Jackson Family Wines/Kendall-Jackson)   Shocking and unexpected though they were, the results helped land California a seat at the table in the world of serious wine and paved the way for other regions to show that they were also capable of making excellent wines. Photo: Bella Spurrier The contest was not without objection. According to George Taber’s book (FYI -this is an affiliate link and I may earn a small commission from your purchase) the major ones were: The 20-point system was too limiting (but 20 points was standard at the time, I think any scale would have been criticized) For each category there were only four French wines to six California wines, so the odds were statistically in California’s favor (this is a very valid argument but the purpose of the tasting was for fun and learning, so we can’t really fault Spurrier for not knowing!) Spurrier didn’t choose the best French vintages (Spurrier picked French wines he thought would win, this was the best available) The French wines were too young (the tasting has been replicated and the California wines have aged better than the French wines!) Blind tastings suck – (this is very true but there was no "gotcha" here. It was just done to remove judgment, not to make people guess what wine was what Chateau!)   My additional objections: It is quite unfair to judge French wine without food. A small roll for palate cleansing isn’t enough. With a meal, the French wines would have been different. Food must be at the table for a fair judgement. The order of the wines in a tasting matters. Of course a lighter style wine tried after a heavier one will seem washed out. I don’t know what the case was here, but the “out of the hat” system was probably not the best order for the wines. We do need to realize that 1976 was a very difficult time for France. It was still rebuilding after the trauma of two World Wars in very quick succession and it took years to garner investment and get the wineries functioning and modernized. This was likely in the period of transition and that means the wines, made by traditional methods may have tasted less “clean” in comparison to the wines of California, which benefitted from cutting edge technology and scientific know-how, which was part of the culture of the reborn wine culture there.   That said, we all must raise a glass to Steve Spurrier, Patricia Gallagher, and George Taber for holding/covering this event, which improved and globalized wine for the modern times! Book cover from Amazon.com I highly recommend George Taber’s book "Judgment of Paris"  It’s a great read!   PS-- As we discussed in the show, check out my friend Tanisha Townsend's podcast, "Wine School Dropout" and her site Girl Meets Glass! ________________________________________________ Thanks to our sponsors: Thanks to YOU! The podcast supporters on Patreon, who are helping us to make the podcast possible and who we give goodies in return for their help! In this episode, Shelley and Phil revisit the Judgement of Paris, which was held on May 24, 1976, in the year of the Bicentennial celebration of America’s independence. What happened on that day was not supposed to happen. The French wines, that wines from the upstart Napa Valley were going against, were supposed to put America in its place when it comes to great wine. The Napa Valley wines held their own, especially Chateau Montelena and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, who won the white wine and red wine categories, respectively. Shelley and Phil feature both of those wines on this episode and throw in a White Burgundy for good measure. #HappyFriday! #ItsWineTime!Wines tasted this episode: 2017 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay (From Fred Meyer, $55)2018 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis (From Fred Meyer, $70)For more information on the 2017 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay, please visit  https://montelena.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/2017-Napa-Valley-Chardonnay.pdfFor more information on the the 2018 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis, please visit  https://www.stagsleapwinecellars.com/2018-artemis-cabernet-sauvignon/5637245076.pA  special thanks to our sponsors: The Social Web, Cave B, Culinary StoneThe Social Web. In the early 70s, when Bo Barrett and his father James started at Chateau Montelena, wine hadn't been made there since before Prohibition. A few years later, their Chardonnay would beat out French Chardonnays at the Judgment of Paris. It's the kind of scrappy, underdog story that Hollywood loves. Alicia, Greg and Chris taste through four wines with Bo and talk about the history of his game-changing winery.  Drink along at home with the following wines: Chateau Montelena Riesling 2019 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 2018 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2017 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2018

In Episode #6 I'm going to review some amazing wine gifts and explain why they are perfect for friends, family, yourself - truly any wine lover! I'm also going to spend some time discussing a question I get a lot this time of year - “what wines make great holiday gifts?” Whether you're shopping for your boss or looking for a hostess gift to bring to your annual Christmas gathering, I'm going to give you a few options here that should help you get through the holiday season! And all of these wines plus my full holiday gift guide are also listed on my blog, with links to purchase, at thewineceo.com/blog ---------- We start by diving into price points and buying wines that you know they will love. But what if you don't know what they like? Here are my 3 recommendations for this holiday season... 1. Stick to bubbles! Everyone likes champagne and you know they'll use it for new year's if they don't drink it around Christmas. Plus you can find some really good champagne for $40-$80. Try Veuve Cliquot Yellow Label or Demi-Sec, Billecart Salmon Brut Reserve, Tattinger Brut, or Piper Heiseick Sublime Demi Sec. 2. Try a California Cabernet Sauvignon. Most folks, regardless of wine knowledge, are familiar with Cabernet Sauvignon and will recognize Napa and Sonoma as great wine regions. Also, since many folks eat prime rib, roast beef, and other heavy meats for Christmas, a Cabernet Sauvignon will go great with these. Some of my favorites include Chappellet Signature Napa Cab, Stag's Leap Artemis, Chateau Montelena, or Caymus. 3. But if you feel like they will get a ton of standard wines and you want yours to stand out, my recommendation would be to try either a French Pinot Noir from Burgundy or a sweet German Riesling. Both of these wines are recognized in the US, but not as well known as a lot of California wines and Champagnes. Try Joseph Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Chevillon Chezeaux Nuis St. Georges, or the Jadot Beaune Vignes for a Burgundy Pinot Noir. And try Dr. Loosen and Trimbach for great German riesling. For more gift ideas and to check out the full list of items on my holiday gift guide, be sure to check out my blog post HERE and happy shopping!

Finding the apocalyptic visions of the last episode too sobering, Sean and Cody liquor up with some California chardonnay to tackle the first comedy on the Green Screen list. In Bottle Shock, wine academy president Stephen Spurrier (Alan Rickman) tries to shake up the Paris wine scene by pitting the snobby old guard French vintners against the rebellious upstarts of California's Napa Valley in a famous 1976 tasting competition. Can the mostly golden but sometimes poop-brown fluid wrought by the awkward father-son combination of Bill Pullman and Chris Pine, as the beleaguered vintners of Chateau Montelena, stack up against the European heavyweights? Environmental issues explored include the history of viticulture, settler colonialism in old California, and peoples' relationship with the land they live and work.   What really happened in the 1976 “Judgment of Paris” competition? Why did California wine have such a terrible reputation for most of the 20th century? How did a handful of Eastern European refugees from Communist oppression save the California wine business? Who wouldn't be flattered to have Alan Rickman play them in a movie? How do you pronounce “terroir”? What was up with those Orson Welles wine commercials from the early ‘80s? Did Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters play at Woodstock ‘94? How can Chris Pine's wig be even worse than William Shatner's in Star Trek IV? Why were you so much more likely to watch this movie on the back of an airline seat than in a theater? The answers to these questions flow like cheap cabernet from a bottle of Two Buck Chuck in this tasty episode of Green Screen. Corey Beck Corey Beck, chief winemaker for Francis Ford Coppola's wine portfolio, is back on California Wine Country today, joining Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn. Corey grew up in Knights Valley and his grandfather was a vineyard manager for Chateau Montelena. He planted the vineyard that produced the grapes that won the Judgement of Paris. The label said Alexander Valley-Napa, even if Alexander Valley is actually in Sonoma. Dan Berger briefly tells the story of the Judgement of Paris. Steven Spurrier ran a wine shop in Paris and decided to stage a blind tasting competition between his favorite California wines and the best French wines, with French judges. When the California wines won both the white and the red, the French establishment rebelled, but when they restaged it several years later, California won again. Beck started with the Coppola company in 1998 as assistant winemaker. In 2006 they acquired the Sonoma property which is theirs today, complete with swimming pool. The Coppola Family portfolio other properties including Inglenook. “The good news is, we work for a creative genius,” he says. Last Monday night was the award ceremony where Francis Ford Coppola received a lifetime achievement award from Wine Enthusiast. He said, “One of the great joys of my life is that all my family members are now on a wine label.” His Director's Cut wines are made in Sonoma County. Barry Herbst says that Coppola wines did very well in the SF Chronicle competition this year and they are available at Bottle Barn. Corey Beck gives credit to the growers who produce their fruit. They also have a property in Oregon now. According to Dan Berger, Oregon is producing great Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, in addition to Pinot Noir. Dan says Gamay Noir is hot as a pistol up there, and we don't even get any in California. The Coppolas also have a resort property in Italy. They practice and celebrate the Italian way of life, centered around the dinner table, and including good wine, in all of their locations. They describe the wide variety of brands and labels, especially the Diamond series, a consumer-friendly price point. Dan says that Francis wanted those wines to be dry, not “soft.” Those wines were dry with structure and balance and “...the market place became a little more sophisticated because of what Francis did.” In the mid-90s, when they launched the Diamond Series in the US, there were roughly 3000 wine wholesalers and only 1800 wineries in the US. Now, we have around 600 wholesalers (with some consolidation) and 11,000 wineries in the US. Today that makes it more difficult to get the wines “through that hourglass.” Nothing is easy, with consolidation on the wholesale side and the winery side and many alternatives to wine. A major difference, says Dan Berger, is direct-to-consumer sales. Three years ago, 10% of the wine sold in the US was sold direct-to-consumer, and today that is 40%. That is a huge change and Dan credits Bottle Barn for having the Number One retail concept with their new business model combining the Bottle Barn store with a robust online store that offers delivery.

I was so excited to have the chance to host the folks from Chateau Montelena, one of the wineries that helped put Napa on the world wine map as serious winemaking region, capable of rivaling Burgundy and Bordeaux. This podcast isn’t about free marketing for Chateau Montelena. It’s about the historical significance of the place, and about how they do things so differently from a lot of other Napa wineries. We were lucky to have head winemaker Cameron Parry, assistant winemaker Matt Crafton, and marketing diva (and one of the coolest ladies in Napa) Jamie Rothberg around to break it all down for us.If you want some more background on the winery (since we don’t go into detail on some things) please read these two posts (2010, 2011) to learn more!Full of funny, surprising (there is a HUGE wine celebrity cameo in the middle) and dorky moments, here’s a quick rundown of what we t [...]

An interview with RANDALL MILLER the director of BOTTLE SHOCK - the story of the early days of California wine making featuring the now infamous, blind Paris wine tasting of 1976 that has come to be known as "Judgment of Paris". Shot on location in the Northern California wine country, Bottle Shock focuses on the contentious relationship between headstrong perfectionist Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman), a former attorney, and his free-spirited son Bo (Chris Pine). For all their differences, the two share a dream of producing a great Chardonnay at the Chateau Montelena vineyard Jim founded in Calistoga in the early 1970s. Miller began his career at the American Film Institute with the short film Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing and Charm School. The film won numerous awards and began Miller's professional career as a director. Off the heat of the short, Randall directed numerous episodic series such as "thirtysomething," "Northern Exposure," "Popular" and "Jack & Jill." His feature career took off with the films Houseguest and The Sixth Man. Looking to get back to his roots in independent filmmaking, Miller and his wife, Jody Savin, set out to start anew. Ironically, their new start took them back to the short with which it all began. Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School is now realized as a full-length feature. The team subsequently completed another labor of love, Nobel Son (2007), starring Alan Rickman as a Nobel Prize winner you hate to love.
