Additional Info: 9 Cold Calling Tips for Introverts 1. Don’t Ignore your Anxiety It’s OK to be nervous and feel uncomfortable with making a cold call. Lots of people do. Ignoring that feeling with only make your call more challenging. Instead, acknowledge your fear and ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen. The worst thing is probably that you’ll be rejected. Although this might be uncomfortable, you would still live through it. Addressing these feelings instead of simply brushing them off will give you the power to conquer your anxiety about cold calling and start with a more relaxed approach. 2. Do your Research Just because it’s a cold call doesn’t mean it has to be a blind call. Do your research before jumping in. Know your target audience as well as you can. Know what they have purchased on the past, what they’re looking for, and what’s important to them. Having insight into this information will help you to be a more convincing sales person. But even more than that, it will help you to mentally prepare for the call. By knowing your target inside and out, you’ll encounter fewer surprises and be better prepared for how to handle their questions. So remember, not only will doing your research help increase your likelihood of making a sale, it’ll also help you feel better about having to make the cold call in the first place. 3. Build your Script For introverts, scripts are everything. Sure, you definitely don’t want to read directly from a script, but it is nice to have one laid out to help guide you if you get nervous or stuck. When building a script, here are a few tips to keep in mind: Don’t write it out word-for-word. Writing out a script word for word is never a good idea. When you’re nervous you’ll use it as a crutch and read it verbatim, leading you to sound somewhat robotic. Instead, stick to main points and lists, rather than full paragraphs. Keep it short. You can always elaborate on points as you see fit or as the prospect asks you questions. It’s better to keep your initial script short and to-the point. Grab their attention. Much like writing a story, you need to get the prospect’s attention right off the bat. They’ll start to tune you out after a few seconds if you don’t, so make sure you really open with a bang. Keep it personal. Take a moment to ask the prospect about themselves and what they’re looking for and then customize your approach accordingly. 4. Practice Makes Perfect If you’re uncomfortable with cold calling, practicing will help you perfect your approach. Get front of a mirror, or even pick up your phone and pretend you’re speaking to someone. Once you get comfortable, then pick up the phone and contact your first prospect. 5. Don’t Try to Be an Extrovert You’re not an extrovert, so mimicking one won’t sound natural, and therefore likely won’t result in any sales. Instead of trying to be outgoing, which will come off as insincere, be yourself. 6. Focus the Attention on the Caller Introverts are usually uncomfortable talking about themselves. Luckily, when it comes to sales, there’s no need to. You can focus all of your attention on the caller. Once you’ve got their attention, focus on what they’re looking for and how your product or service can fit their needs. Additionally, people tend to be friendlier when they’re talking about themselves, so getting the prospect to open up a bit will help both your sales and make you feel more at ease during your cold call. 7. Use Referrals and Common Connections One way to improve your odds of making a sale is to find some sort of common connection to mention. With LinkedIn and other social networking sites, this process of finding a common connection is simple for introverts. Mentioning a reference or name dropping can go a long way, especially when you’re not very comfortable making the call. 8. Leave Voicemails More often than not, you’ll be reaching someone’s voicemail. When this happens, introverts might be tempted to say “Whew” and simply hang up. Instead, fight that urge and leave a voicemail. This is also a great time to throw in a common connection of some sort, if at all possible. That will dramatically increase the odds of the person returning your call. 9. Keep Track of your Progress The only way to gauge improvement is to track your progress. With a nine percent success rate, if you’re not too far off from this number than don’t blame your introversion. Instead, have a realistic understanding on what you can expect. That said, your numbers should only improve as you perfect your skills. But the only way you’ll see this is if you track them. Additional Info: How to Get Over a Fear of Phone Calls 1) Lock in your motivation. You must be motivated and have the will to succeed. If you are not motivated, you have a completely different issue. It might look and feel like sales call reluctance, but it requires a totally different treatment. You may need to contact a psychologist, a career counselor, or a well-trained coach to get your motivational infrastructure in place to succeed. 2) Identify your “negative intruders.” What are negative intruders? Well, what goes through your mind when you reach for the phone -- and then stop? What are you thinking about when you swing around and check email one more time, refill your coffee cup, get into a conversation with a coworker, and then realize it’s lunchtime and push off your calls until after lunch? What is causing you to hesitate? What thought stops you from making prospecting calls? Here is a list of thoughts that stop many salespeople: The prospect probably already have a vendor they are happy with. They will say, “No, I’m not interested.” I’ll appear unorganized. I don’t know what to say. I worry about their perception of what it is I am trying to accomplish. I am not comfortable with my script. I need a new script. Your freedom from sales call reluctance lies with identifying your negative intruders. 3) Realign your thinking. Your brain works in amazing ways. It allows you to create visions of the future and dream about achievements. How do you envision your success? How will it change your life? Learning to visualize your future success is important to overcoming sales call reluctance. Stop reading right now and answer this question: “What would I love to achieve or have in my life?” Is it easy for you to answer that, or are you struggling? This is the key to transforming your sales results. Conversely, the brain has a way of creating obstacles through limiting beliefs, assumptions, perceptions, interpretations, and the ever-present inner critic. If you allow yourself to identify with or believe your obstacles, overcoming call reluctance will be difficult. Awareness is key! Human beings are meaning-making machines. We are always attempting to make meaning out of what we experience. Our stories can either serve or sabotage us. It is the way we are wired. Here's an example. Think about the last time you had an “engaged” prospect who agreed to the next step in your sales process; however, when you attempted to reconnect they ignored you. What kind of stories did you start making up? Maybe you thought, “Oh, he is just an insincere jerk,” or, “She was just placating me to get me off the phone.” Then you probably stopped contacting them, simply because you bought into your own story. Thought realignment is one of the crucial prescriptions to overcome call reluctance. Remember: The situation doesn't cause you anxiety -- your thoughts about the situation do. After you have allowed yourself to admit to your negative intruders, say, “These are very interesting.” Notice you are not adhering a negative label. There is no better word to neutralize the negative than "interesting." Here’s an exercise for you: Choose one of your negative intruders and counter it. In the case of “I don’t know what to say,” immediately counter it with, “That is not true. I simply need a script with a value proposition from my prospect’s perspective.” Another one: “What if they say ‘no?’" Simply counter that with, “I will have at least three pattern interrupts to combat the reflexive ‘no.'” Your confidence will soar once you start prospecting. By researching the person or company before you make the call, you take that fear away and you’re suddenly able to offer more “personalized” value. Lesson 2 – Watch the Pros Another great way to build confidence is to watch the best do it! Watch experienced sales people making cold calls and take notes. Watch how they start the call, how the build rapport, how they overcome objections and you’ll soon not only learn great tips but you’ll feel more confident when you make calls. Lesson 3 – Build a Master Plan Whilst it is common for millennials (and most sales people to be fair) to be scared of cold calling, one great way to overcome this fear is to be fully prepared. If you know exactly what you want or need to say, how to overcome objections and some common questions you’ll feel a lot better about making the call. It’s often the fear of the unknown that plagues us. Lesson 4 – Practice Makes Perfect Confidence is often built through experience so the more practice you get, the better you’ll feel and the better you’ll get at it. Most people feel bad about cold calling when they don’t succeed it at, but as soon as you start getting results and you have good conversations, you’ll feel better about doing it. The quickest way to get results? Make more calls! Lesson 5 – Stay in The Zone The biggest challenge in making a cold call is usually picking up the phone to make the first one. It’s usually in this time you’ll look to find any distraction possible! Once you’ve made the first call though they become easier and easier. This is why it’s so beneficial to stay in the zone once you’re in it and avoid any distractions that come your way (bar an alien invasion perhaps). Lesson 6 – Learn to Love Objections! The most difficult part of cold calling (after picking the phone up in the first place) is overcoming objections. You could be mid-way through an awesome pitch when they throw an unexpected objection that trips you up. If you can learn how to feel confident dealing with them and embrace them, you’ll soon master them! Lesson 7 – Celebrate Success As I mentioned earlier, as soon as you start to achieve success through cold calling the fear will soon disappear. You should celebrate each success; you’ve earned it! Every time you book an appointment or get a sale, celebrate it! You’ll make the success even sweeter, and even more appealing making that fear feel like nothing standing between you and sales success. Understand your client The starting point for being able to add value to your client relationships has to be gaining a clear understanding of your client, their business, and their personal and business goals. It is also vital to understand what they currently value from their service relationship with you. 2. Make it clear and easy to do business with you At the start of any transaction with a client, you should ensure that there is complete clarity between both parties with regards to the scope, delivery and form of the service to be provided. The aim is to make it as easy as possible for your clients to do business with you. For many firms there has been a reluctance to provide this information in the necessary detail. The core information to be communicated to the client should include: • the scope of the core work to be undertaken by the firm; • the scope of the work to be carried out by the client to enable the firm to carry out its work; • the timeframe for the project as a whole and any interim timelines that need to be achieved including any progress reporting; • who will be carrying out the work on the part of the firm and their contact details; • what will be the outputs from the work and how it will be delivered (i.e., documentation and what format it will take - digital or hard copy); • the core fee for the work to be done and the basis upon which any expenses are to be charged; • how any additional work that is necessary outside the core work will be communicated to the client, agreed and billed. 3. Keep your promises Meeting deadlines plays a vital role in developing the level of trust upon which successful relationships so strongly depend. All too often in an attempt to impress clients or add value to a relationship, promises are made to clients that are unrealistic and, as a consequence, expectations are not met. Avoid agreeing to or imposing unrealistically tight deadlines on yourself or your team which cannot be met. Seek to do the reverse, under-promise and over-deliver. This creates a most positive impression in clients’ minds because it is so rare. It gives a real opportunity to add value and impress. Where you know you cannot satisfy a commitment you have made to a client for whatever reason, flag it up to them as soon as possible. Don’t delay and always offer a revised solution. 4. Be proactive When you contact your client about matters that concern them that are outside of the routine transactions you are contracted to provide, this will be a clear demonstration that you care about them and their business. It shows you are always looking to act in their best interests. This has a high propensity to be seen as adding value to the relationship for many clients. A lack of proactive advice from their accountants is another primary source of dissatisfaction highlighted in recent small business surveys. 5. Train your client’s team and your own team The firm that seeks opportunities to help their client’s team to become more skilled in their roles, even in skills that they are currently engaging you to provide, will again encourage those clients to view you more as a long-term business partner rather than merely as a provider of technical expertise. Additional Notes for this episode: Lack of Preparedness No one wants to do a job that they don’t have the proper tools, technology and training they need to succeed. The tools, the technology, and the training prepare you to succeed and build confidence. The opposite is also true; a lack of the proper tools, technology and training destroy confidence. For cold calling, this boils down to a couple of key factors. Do you have a written script? Do you have a written script for objections? Is the script something that you can be proud to use? Does your script make you sound like a professional whose clear goal is to create value for the customer? Or does it make you sound like a credit card company? Lack of Ability to Differentiate Professional salespeople need to differentiate themselves in a crowded field. This is difficult to do, and it is more difficult over the telephone–especially when the salesperson rattles off the same lines the prospect just heard from a competitor. Salespeople don’t like to make cold calls when they cannot differentiate themselves. There are a lot of gimmicks and tricks to differentiate that have been tried over the years, like fake polls and surveys, but all result in a lack of trust once the call turns into a sales call. To differentiate yourself on the phone is difficult, but it has to be done and it has to be authentic. One great way to do so is to create value for the prospect. Inability to Create Value for the Prospect Professional salespeople succeed when they create value for their prospects and customers. When cold calling doesn’t provide you with the ability to create value for the prospect, it doesn’t feel like a worthwhile use of your time. There are sales organizations who have figured out how to deliver value before claiming value over the telephone. They still ask for appointments. But the calls are valuable for the prospect because they provide the prospect with something more than a request for an appointment. The reason telemarketing is so offensive to the people receiving the call is because it is so one-sided; it isn’t about creating value for them. Conclusion: Poor Results and Call Reluctance All of the above factors lead to poor results, and poor results lead to less activity. Nobody likes to do something that isn’t working. They like it even less when the person on the other end of their activity doesn’t like being the recipient of the activity. Correcting and improving the three factors above can make cold calling a more valuable tool in a salesperson’s arsenal.
