In this episode of The Beacon Way Podcast, Alex Smith, Strategy Consultant and Author of "No Bullsh*t Strategy", explains why most businesses lack real strategy, confusing it with sub-strategies like marketing or branding, and argues the core question is what the business does that is both highly demanded and uniquely positioned. He distinguishes freelancing from building a growth-oriented business, noting many hit plateaus and mistakenly pursue optimization—trying to be “better”—which commoditizes them. Instead, strategy is finding a “needle in a haystack”: something no one else sells that people want. Alex advises grounding the business in a clear, understood category, then uncovering existing accidental quirks that drive success (“find out who you are and do it on purpose”). He reframes “niching down” as being specific without shrinking the market, discusses hyper-competition and AI's impact on therapy, and shares a method for creating new value by sacrificing an assumed “good” industry norm and serving those who benefit from that reversal. Accounting has a tech problem, and it is not what most people think. In this conversation, Cos Nicolaescu, Co-founder and CEO at Accrual, breaks down why accounting has lagged behind, where AI can actually create leverage, and why the future of the profession is likely more human, not less. This episode gets into the real constraints inside accounting workflows, the difference between deterministic work and judgment based work, and why trust, context, and client knowledge still matter more than most AI narratives admit. What stands out• Accounting has not been slow to adopt tech because accountants resist change. A big reason is that the tools have often been weak, fragmented, and not worth the workflow overhead.• AI can handle more of the mechanical and backward looking work, but the highest value still sits in judgment, context, and forward looking decisions.• In accounting, knowing the tax code is not enough. The hard part is knowing the client, their history, their complexity, and the tradeoffs that shape future outcomes.• The profession is still deeply supply constrained. Firms are understaffed, demand is growing, and better tooling may help accountants do more meaningful work instead of simply shrinking headcount.• Junior talent may benefit more than people expect. As tools improve, newer professionals could ramp faster, though trust and client relationships will still take time to build.Timestamped highlights00:39 What Accrual is building, and why accounting workflows are a major opportunity for AI01:47 Why accounting is more tech conservative than people assume, and why bad software is a big part of the story04:11 The three buckets of accounting work, standardization, firm level process, and personal preference07:29 Where AI fits best in accounting, flexible interfaces, document understanding, and smarter workflow support12:14 The key difference between software engineering automation and accounting automation16:36 Will AI reduce the need for accountants, or make the profession more productive and more valuableA line worth remembering“I would want to see people who spend a lot of time getting CPA degrees and training for decades spending most of their time, not just inputting data from one field to another.”Pro tips• If you are building AI for a regulated or detail heavy workflow, start with where accuracy matters most and do not confuse automation with value• If you work in professional services, context is the moat. The more client history and situational knowledge you can capture, the stronger your systems become• If you are early in your career, tool fluency can compress the learning curve, but trust still has to be earnedStay connectedIf this episode gave you a new lens on AI, accounting, and the future of expertise, follow the show, subscribe for more conversations like this, and share it with someone building at the intersection of software, operations, and professional services.

Recruiting Conversations
Be Unforgettable: How to Create Value That Actually Sticks in Recruiting Conversations

Recruiting Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2026 5:41

Most leaders believe they are creating value in their recruiting conversations. But here is the truth. Most of that value is forgettable. It sounds good in the moment. It feels professional. It checks the box. But a week later, the recruit cannot remember what made you different. And in a competitive market, generic value does not win. Memorable value does. In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, we break down how to move from common, scripted value to something that actually sticks. Episode Breakdown [00:00] Why Most Value Is Forgettable Generic value is: Broad Scripted About you, not them Easy for anyone else to say Statements like: We have great culture We support our team We care about growth They are not wrong. They are just common. And common does not create differentiation. [01:35] The Shift: From Generic to Memorable 1. Make It Specific Specificity creates clarity. Instead of saying: We support our team Say: Every new producer meets with me weekly for the first 90 days and we build their pipeline together Specific language creates mental pictures. Mental pictures create memory. 2. Make It Personal Memorable value is tailored. It reflects what the other person actually cares about. If they want balance, show them how flexibility works If they want growth, show them how you develop leaders If they want autonomy, explain how decisions are made The more someone feels seen, the more they remember you. 3. Make It Experiential People remember what they experience, not just what they hear. Invite them into your world: Sit in on a team call Talk to a team member See your onboarding Experience your culture firsthand Experience creates emotional connection. And emotional connection creates memory. 4. Add an Element of Surprise Memorable value often includes unexpected generosity. Send a personalized video Share a book recommendation tied to their goals Make an introduction that helps them When you give without pressure, you stand out. 5. Anchor It to Vision Memorable value is not just about benefits. It is about belief. Most leaders talk about what is. Few talk about what could be. When you clearly communicate what you are building and invite them into that future, the conversation becomes transformational. [04:00] The Real Test Think about your last five recruiting conversations. If those people were asked: What made that leader different? Would they have a clear answer? If not, that is not a failure. It is an opportunity. Key Takeaways Generic Value Blends In – If everyone can say it, it will not be remembered Specificity Creates Memory – Clear details make your message stick Personalization Builds Connection – When people feel seen, they listen Experience Beats Explanation – Let people feel your culture, not just hear about it Vision Creates Meaning – Memorable conversations are rooted in a bigger future Here is the shift. You do not need to be louder. You do not need to be flashier. You do not need a bigger budget. You need to be: More specific More personal More experiential That is how you go from generic to unforgettable. Want Help Creating Value That Differentiates You? If you want to sharpen how you communicate your value, build conversations that stand out, and create a recruiting system that attracts instead of blends in, let's talk. You can book time directly on Richard's calendar and we will walk through: How to define your unique value clearly How to personalize your recruiting conversations How to build experiential recruiting moments How to create messaging that people actually remember Visit bookrichardnow.com and grab a time that works for you. There's a misconception that restaurant brands are built by big ideas, big campaigns, or the next big menu innovation. But the truth is much simpler and much harder. In this episode of CleanTalk, we sit down with Thaddeus Anim-Somuah, a corporate sustainability professional, chemical engineer, World Energy Council contributor, and advisor on impact and energy-transition investments, to explore how energy, materials, finance, and human behaviour are deeply interconnected, and why sustainability only works when it creates real value for people.Drawing on his upbringing in Ghana, his engineering background, and his work across industry, finance, and policy, Thaddeus unpacks the circular economy, material efficiency, behavioural change, sustainable finance, and the limits of “moralised” renewable energy narratives. We discuss why optimisation often matters more than abundance, how regulation like CSRD is reshaping corporate behaviour, and why finance, more than technology alone — will determine the pace of the energy transition. This episode is for sustainability professionals, engineers, investors, policymakers, founders, and anyone trying to understand how the energy transition actually works beyond slogans, marketing, and moral posturing.Enjoy!_______________Connect with Thaddeus on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/thaddeusanimsomuah1/Join the CleanTalk community on Linkedin:https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12991627/_______________CleanTalk is produced by Harmer Visuals, a film & media company specialising in brand & case study storytelling for organisations across the renewable energy and clean technology sector. We've been taught that business success comes from logic, prediction, and data-driven strategy. But what happens when uncertainty makes all of that break down?In this episode of The Value Creators Podcast, Hunter Hastings speaks with Angus Fletcher, author of Primal Intelligence, about why entrepreneurs don't succeed by predicting the future — but by creating it.Angus Fletcher is uniquely qualified to draw on both neuroscience and entrepreneurial theory, and to add perspective from a field he himself pioneered, story science. He runs a special research lab at Ohio State University called Project Narrative, and its insights have been applied in US Army Special Forces, NASA, Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Angus explains how the human brain is designed for uncertainty, not optimization, and why intuition, imagination, emotion, and judgment are not flaws that interfere with rationality, but essential decision-making systems for entrepreneurial action.Key Insights:Why logic and prediction fail in conditions of true uncertaintyHow primal intelligence helps entrepreneurs act when the future is unknowableWhy storytelling, not data, is the brain's primary way of making sense of the worldIf you want to rethink intelligence, leadership, and entrepreneurship for a world that can't be predicted, this conversation offers a powerful new lens.Resources:➡️ Learn What They Didn't Teach You In Business School: The Value Creators Online Business CourseLearn more about Angus FletcherConnect with Angus Fletcher on LinkedInGet the book "Primal Intelligence. Business Start Your Engines with 5 Flags to Enhance your Sales and Strategy Why do so many companies struggle to grow—even when they have talented sales teams and visionary executives? On the next episode of A New Direction, I, Coach Jay Izso, sit down with Wall Street Journal Best Selling Author Scott Edinger to discuss his latest book, The Growth Leader. Scott's research uncovers a costly disconnect between the C-Suite and the sales force—driven by the fact that business strategy and sales strategy often live in separate worlds. The result? Leaders obsess over quotas and transactions instead of delivering a powerful, customer-driven experience. In The Growth Leader, Scott shows that bridging this gap is not just possible—it's essential. And it starts with what he calls The 5 Flags Start: Define Success, Embrace Your Power Play, Identify Your Customer, Create Value, and Execute. Each of these steps is a practical move any leader can take to transform how their organization thinks about growth, sales alignment, and customer engagement. During this episode, Scott will break down each of these 5 Flags, revealing how they help leaders align their vision with real-world sales execution. You'll hear why defining success goes far beyond revenue targets, how to identify your “power play” that differentiates you in the market, why knowing your customer is non-negotiable, and how creating true value leads to stronger, longer-lasting business relationships. And finally—how to stop talking about growth and start executing it. If you're an executive, entrepreneur, or sales leader who's tired of missed targets, siloed thinking, and wasted potential, this is the episode you can't afford to miss. Join us live Wednesday, August 13th at 5:30 pm Eastern, and discover how to align your strategy, empower your sales team, and lead your organization into sustainable, customer-focused growth. Scott Edinger's book, "The Growth Leader: Strategies to Drive the Top and Bottom lines" is fundamentally and practically fantastic! The bottom line is this, you as a CEO want your team to sell more, you get frustrated because they are not selling.  So what do you do?  You send them to more training.  You give them more books to read.  And what do they come back with? More scripts, more words and phrases, how to convert, etc. And that's your problem!  Because do you know what is missing from all of this?  Zero focus on the customer experience...ZERO! Scott Edinger uncovers all of this through research and his success in the consulting field working fortune 50 clients, and finds the same problems occur in every business.  The business strategy is not connected to the sales team, which is the front line of your business, and closest to the customer, and rather than focus on the customer experience, they focus on quotas.  It doesn't work! This book is the straight talk about why your sales team is failing and, why you are not achieving the revenues that you desire.  It comes down to this one statement:  "You don't have a sales problem...you have a leadership problem".  And if you think clever sales techniques are the answer to your sales issues, or that by adding more pressure to your sales team will increase sales...think again... Because you're really not acting as a Growth Leader. Great book! Get your copy here! Please reach out to out great sponsors of A New Direction. The Happy Hustle Podcast

Ever feel like you're just watching others succeed while you stay stuck? What if I told you the key to breaking free lies in one simple shift: becoming a producer, not just a consumer? In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, we're diving deep into why you need to become a producer and not just a consumer. I'm breaking down 10 reasons why shifting from consumer to producer is crucial for your personal and professional growth. Plus, I'll guide you through eight actionable steps to help you make this mindset shift and start producing more value in the world. Producers create value—whether through products, services, or content. They are actively involved in shaping their world and contributing to society. Consumers, on the other hand, simply take in what others create, often passively. If you're always asking, “What can I get?” instead of “What can I create?”—it's time for a change. Why You Need to Be a Producer: 10 Reasons to Make the Shift Control Over Your Time and Energy- Producers have control over their schedules and output. As a producer, you're not just reacting to what others are putting out—you're creating on your terms, leading to greater autonomy in your life. Creativity and Innovation- Producing requires problem-solving and critical thinking, which fuels your creativity. Consumption, especially passive consumption, doesn't stimulate your mind in the same way. Greater Contribution to Society- Producers add value to the world. Whether it's a product, a service, or content, creating something that benefits others feels incredibly fulfilling. It's your way of giving back to the community. Financial Freedom- Producers build businesses and create multiple streams of income. If you want financial freedom, becoming a producer is a must. Consumers, on the other hand, spend their money on what others have created. Personal Fulfillment- There's a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from creating something meaningful. Whether it's a podcast, a blog, or even a book, producers feel fulfilled by their contributions. Building Skills and Knowledge-When you produce, you develop new skills and gain expertise in your field. The act of creating helps you grow in ways consuming never will. Networking and Relationships- Producers naturally build relationships with others who are also creating value. You're part of a network of like-minded individuals, opening doors to opportunities consumers rarely get. Increased Confidence and Self-Worth-Producing gives you a sense of empowerment. You'll gain confidence in your abilities, which will enhance your self-worth. Ownership and Legacy- Producers create things that last. Whether it's a business, a product, or a body of work, what you create becomes part of your legacy. A Happier, Purpose-Driven Life- Producers tend to have a clearer sense of purpose, leading to a more joyful and fulfilling life. Consumption, on the other hand, often leaves people feeling empty and unfulfilled. Now that you know the why, let's talk about the how. Here are eight simple steps to help you shift from consumer to producer:How to Become a Producer: 8 Actionable Steps Identify Your Strengths and InterestsStart by reflecting on what excites you. Is it writing, creating videos, building products, or solving problems? Focus on what you're passionate about, as this will keep you motivated. Start Small and Be ConsistentYou don't need to create a masterpiece overnight. Start by producing something small every day or every week. Write a blog post, share an insight on social media, or work on a business idea for one hour a day. Limit ConsumptionTrack how much time you're spending on consumption—whether it's TV, social media, or podcasts. Be intentional and limit your consumption to educational or inspirational content that fuels your creativity. Create Value for OthersShift your focus from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” Think about how you can solve problems for people and offer value that makes a difference. Set Clear GoalsSet specific, measurable goals for your production efforts. Whether it's launching a blog, building a side hustle, or producing content regularly, having clear goals will keep you on track. Find Accountability PartnersSurround yourself with like-minded producers who will hold you accountable. Join communities, mastermind groups, or partner with others to stay motivated. Embrace Failure as a Learning OpportunityDon't be afraid to fail. Every producer encounters setbacks, but it's how you learn and grow. Use failure as a stepping stone to improve your next creation. Celebrate Your WinsTake time to celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Every step forward is a win, and recognizing that will keep you motivated to continue producing. The choice is yours. You have the power to shift from consumer to producer and create value for the world. It's a mindset change that will lead to more fulfillment, financial freedom, and a purpose-driven life. So, what are you waiting for? Stop consuming and start producing—your future self will thank you for it.
