They're here! Join BP, Coop and Justin as we analyse the iconic original Poltergeist movie. Poltergeist is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Steven Spielberg, Michael Grais, and Mark Victor from a story by Spielberg. It stars JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Beatrice Straight, and was produced by Spielberg and Frank Marshall. Plot Poltergeist focuses on a suburban family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct their youngest daughter. In the years since its release, the film has been recognized as a horror classic. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, named by the Chicago Film Critics Association as the 20th-scariest film ever made. Steven Spielberg involvement Accounts differ as to the level of Spielberg's involvement, but it is clear that he was frequently on set during filming and exerted significant creative control. For that reason, some have said that Spielberg should be considered the film's co-director or even main director, though both Spielberg and Hooper have disputed this. Sequels and Remake The film was followed by Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986), Poltergeist III (1988), as well as a 2015 remake, but none had the critical success of the original. The Poltergeist Curse The Poltergeist franchise is believed by some to be cursed due to the premature deaths of several people associated with the film (including Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne), a notion that was the focus of an E! True Hollywood Story. Poltergeist was also featured on Season 1, episode 3 of Cursed Films. Popular Culture "Bad Dream House", the first segment of "Treehouse of Horror", the first episode of the annual The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Halloween specials, is partly a parody of Poltergeist. Spice Girls pays homage to the film in their 1997 music video for the song "Too Much". The Family Guy episode "Petergeist", Peter Griffin discovers an Indian burial ground when he attempts to build a multiplex in a backyard. When he takes an Indian chief's skull, a poltergeist invades the Griffins' home. The episode used some of the same musical cues heard in the film and recreates several of its scenes. American Dad! also parodied the film with the season 10 episode "Poltergasm", in which the Smith house has become haunted by Francine's unsatisfied sex drive, and Roger plays Ruby Zeldastein, a parody of Tangina. The 2001 comedy horror film Scary Movie 2 parodies the movie's clown doll attack in Robbie's bedroom, as well as Diane's levitation. #poltergeist #theotherside #ghost #haunt #movie #horror #1982 #80shorror #carolanne #jobethwilliams #reverendkane #tangina #clown #familyguy #drawntogether #podcast #completeguidetohorror #stevenspielberg #screamqueens

This week we feature our second Redux episode in the Alien Franchise run for Spooky Season (AHHHHH) #Halloweylanyutani. Redux episodes feature films we've covered on the show before but with fresh takes, new voices, and lots of renewed perspectives. This time around we're joined by friends of the show Vera Goudie and Matt Ruff to unpack the often frustrating specifics of ALIEN: COVENANT. Following the more polarizing response to Prometheus, Alien: Covenant feels like a deliberate correction -- perhaps an overcorrection -- away from the more thematic, existential questions the franchise was posing to get back to more xenomorphic carnage. The result is a film that abounds in wasted potential, though not without its moments. Also featuring a Patron only segment with our final Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode for this year, this is a hearty, lively, and thoughtful discussion we really hope you enjoy!Patron Only Segment: The Simpsons, Treehouse of Horror XV5:48 - ALIEN: COVENANTSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Like a cursed frogurt, Baconsale is back to haunt you with another spooky discussion for October. Joel, Kent, Zack, Kang, and Kodos have watched every Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episode and we're ready to share our favorite and least favorite segments with you. Some (Kent and Zack) may say that the episodes have sharply declined in quality over the years and have nothing to do with Halloween anymore, whereas others (Joel) may be a little too positive and end up being a hype man for average parodies. But that's okay, because all podcast and no conflict make Homer something something. Quoth the raven, “set your podcast to evil and press play!”
Lebbi joined from the GameLink Podcast. Old Tomato Face and Mr. Monopoly host Bad For Me. The last episode of Thor's Long Halloween will be Simpsons Treehouse of Horror 6.

Welcome back to Boozy Bracketology! The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" is a Halloween tradition, and at this point there are over 32 to choose from, so this month we are going thematic and embarking on a journey to determine which of the 34 "Treehouse of Horror" episodes is the best. Chris has never seen a single episode somehow, so he's hosting while panelists Will, Anne, Chris, Sarah, and Mike make some tough decisions and, of course, a whole lot of jokey references. We continue our spooky season franchise run (#Halloweyalnd-utani) with the next stop in the Alien franchise: ALIENS. Writer/Director James Cameron took inspiration from Ridley Scott's horror/sci-fi landmark and expanded both the scope and the possibilities with his own vision of a more action-packed, brisker paced thrill ride. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley, accompanied by a host of gun-stacked space marines, a corporate shill, and an android she cannot bring herself to trust. Cameron's vision opened the storytelling possibilities for this franchise and arguably made it possible to continue with any further sequels at all.Joining us to unpack all of the thematic, aesthetic, and narrative layers of Aliens is Sarah Welch-Larson, author of the excellent book, Becoming Alien (which we highly recommend you check out). In Part 2 of our discerning look into "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror 01 to 04," we start with the two literary parodies and then delve into broader discussion about the general appeal of "The Simpsons." - One of these stories makes a reference to the political primaries of 1992 that included Ross Perot. Don't the days of Ross Perot seem quaint now, in a good way? Could we get that kind of political season back please? - Did Dave enjoy the monkey's paw parody, or is this another one in the bad category? What did Todd think about it? - Being a literature fan, did Dave appreciate any aspects of the "Raven" parody? Being less of a literature fan, did that parody reach Todd at all? - Were there any strong opinions about the wraparound segments, the framing devices that bind the separate stories together into full episodes? - Which Grandpa moments did Preston enjoy? What is Todd's favorite Grandpa moment that comes from a totally separate episode? - When trying to determine comedic tastes, was there consensus among the Geeks on Jeff Foxworthy or Jeff Dunham? Which Geek loves the Walter puppet, which Geek loves Jose the "jalapeno on a stick," and which Geek thinks Akhmed the Dead Terrorist is overrated? - How did the movie "PCU" come up in conversation? - Everybody has..."their own"...what, exactly? - How many episodes of the "The Simpsons" has there been? - Preston is the huge Simpsons fan. Just how high did he score these four "Treehouse of Horror" episodes? - What is one of Dave's biggest problems with "The Simpsons"? - Which two very different movies were randomly rolled to be reviewed in the near-ish future? - And, since he couldn't join Preston & Todd during the full review a couple months ago, what were Dave's "quick & dirty" thoughts about "The Fall Guy" (one of this year's most underrated movies so far)? Listen now for the answers to these and other questions as we finish up our deep dive of "The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror 01 to 04." You can contact us by sending an e-mail to discerninggeeks@gmail.com or by joining our Discord server. Please rate or review us wherever you listen to podcasts.
This week, we take a haunting look into the first four "Treehouse of Horror" episodes from "The Simpsons." In Part 1 of this super-sized two-parter, we review the movie parody and "Twilight Zone" parody stories from those first four annual Halloween-themed episodes. Each "Treehouse of Horror" episode contains three stories and a framing device. Preston is the huge Simpsons fan, and he chose to structure our discussion by category. First, we cover the "Twilight Zone" parodies regarding alien abduction, an all-powerful Bart, and a gremlin on a school bus instead of an airplane wing. Next, we cover the movie-based parodies regarding a haunted house, a donut robot, a spooky clown doll, King Kong, zombies, a deal with the devil, and Dracula. Were Dave & Todd's opinions of these "Treehouse of Horror" specials as strong as an oak or as sad as a willow? Was there a consensus to match Preston's love for these, or were opinions a mixed cauldron? Which episode was one Geek's S-tier? The three stories from the 2nd installment were all nightmares, but did one Geek find any of these episodes to be real-life nightmares? Listen now for the answers to these and other bewitching questions as we climb...the "Treehouse of Horror." Stay tuned for Part 2, coming soon, where we cover the two literature-based parodies regarding Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" and a wish-granting monkey's paw. In Part 2, we also discuss "The Simpsons" in general, including a debate about the show's comedic style. You can contact us by sending a message to discerninggeeks@gmail.com or by joining our Discord channel. Please rate or review us wherever you listen to podcasts.

We're back with another installment in our spooky season's #Screamaween covering the film that acts as a soft reset for the franchise and its fifth entry: SCREAM (2022). Bringing back our old gang of characters and introducing us to a whole batch of fresh faces, this "requel" did the impossible by proving that that franchise had life left in it, even following the death of Wes Craven. We're joined by co-host of Horror, Sci-Fi, & Beyond Drew Pasanen as well as friend of the show Jackson Harper to dissect all of the sharp, clever, and fun ways this film reinvigorated the franchise for a new generation, including the fascinating things it has on its mind about legacy and fandom. Also featuring a Patron-only segment discussing THE SIMPSONS Treehouse of Horror X, this is a hearty and fun conversation we really hope you'll enjoy.3:36 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: THE SIMPSONS, Treehouse of Horror X5:32 - SCREAM (2022)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We continue our spooky season franchise run with SCREAM 3, originally conceived as a potential definitive conclusion to a trilogy of Scream films. Beset by creative missteps and haunted by cultural pressures to tone down the violence, Scream 3 lands as far more comedic than either of its predecessors and feels the least cohesive of any in the franchise. It does have its charms, particularly in some of its outrageous new characters and the ever-present affection for its surviving returning characters. But on the whole, Scream 3 would come to be known as where the series begins to slide off the edge of the proverbial knife. We're joined by Gorey Gamer Matt Murray and Quarterly King Andy Whitfield to have a whole lot of fun discussing one of the wildest entries in this franchise. Also featuring a Patron-only segment about The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VIII, this is a brisk and funny conversation that we really hope you enjoy.3:04 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: THE SIMPSONS, Treehouse of Horror VIII5:41 - SCREAM 3See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Simpsons celebrate Halloween for the third time, and we get scarily accurate in our history of this episode! We've got the original script to note the many changed lines in this episode, plus all the references will finally be demystified. Not to mention our thoughts on scary dolls, the many King Kong films (especially the 1933 original), zombies, and tons more. So get ready for the terror of oodles of research in a podcast that may contain potassium benzoate (that's bad)!
