Dr. Frasier Crane! Beast from X-Men! Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons! Our guest needs no introduction: it's Kelsey Grammer. He's an incredibly talented actor and a fascinating, complicated person. He gets into his time working on Cheers while struggling with substance abuse – and how he learned to forgive himself. Don't worry there's plenty of time for some laughs, too. He talks about the inspiration for the voice of Sideshow Bob and embraces the viral clip of him falling from a few years back.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Back into the mid 50's today! Might see the 50's again on Sunday, too. We started the morning with the Thursday song, and in the news, an American Airlines plane collided with a Black Hawk helicopter just outside of DC, a 72 year-old bus driver in Wisconsin was arrested for OWI, America's "Worst Mayor" got into a brawl at a recent community meeting, and a large drug bust in Wisconsin. In sports, the Badgers blew it last night against unranked Maryland, the Bucks play again tomorrow night in San Antonio, and should the Lombardi trophy be renamed after Tom Brady? Elsewhere in sports, NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently suggested changing to 10-minute quarters to speed up games, and Caitlin Clark has turned down an invite to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight, and a really deserving kid in Philly recently got surprised with free tickets to the NFC Championship game! Today was our first ever "Hypothetical Thursday", where we would ask each other a separate hypothetical question and see what our answers are, along with our listeners. Office Cora joined us just after 8am to talk about what's she's doing this weekend in the 715, and the Milwaukee Admirals are planning on busting out some retro jerseys later this season to honor the late, great Bob Uecker. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a woman in New Zealand who found a knife in her sandwich wrap, a school in California that had to cancel classes after they had a bunch of copper wire stolen from inside it's walls, a guy who broke into a house & stole a brand new toilet, a stolen subway train in NYC, a homicide suspect in Springfield, Missouri who looks a lot like "Sideshow Bob" from "The Simpsons", and a guy who assaulted his roomie with a bologna sammich. SEASON 3 EPISODE 77: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump's return to the world of TV interviews is important (and crazy) but the shooting of the head of United Health Care just blocks from my home actually seems to be one of the watershed moments of 21st Century American Politics. We have often descended into the slough of despond that all political parties, voting, law, government, the entirety of the power structure mean nothing and that the only way to change things is violence. I think we're entering such a stage. If so: fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night. AS TO TRUMP apart from his latest threat to imprison opponents (everybody on the January 6 House Committee should go to jail) did anybody notice his insistence that we are "subsidizing" Mexico and Canada by $100 Billion a year and at those rates they should become states. Wait. What? Mr. Numb Nuts Psycho President? If Mexico is a STATE in the United States – you know, where you are right now – the people LIVING there become CITIZENS of the United States, so not only can't you deport people from the US State of Mexico… but you can't put up a wall between Texas and the state of Mexico and in fact you can't inhibit movement BETWEEN Mexico and any state of the union. I hope somebody told MAGA about Trump's new Mexico solution: make it a state. That'd be two senators from Mexico and if New York has 20 million people, 26 congressmen, Mexico with130 million people at 13 congressmen per 10 million residents would get 169 Congressional seats. Trump proposes giving Mexico 169 seats in the US Congress. Also a GOP Senate operative uses the A-word on Tulsi Gabbard, and a Trump operative is ready to blackmail Republican Senators to get Pete Hegseth confirmed anyway. B-Block (25:00) THE OTHER WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: "Democratic" Governor Polis again sides with Sideshow Bob Kennedy. Laura Loomer isn't just hateful, she's stupid. And Marshal Petain would be proud: Jeff Bezos, Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzezinski all double down on collaborating with the Trump Regime. C-Block (35:55) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: My Lunch With Elie. How a delightful afternoon getting to meet Elie Mystal meant I did NOT meet Martin Scorsese. That, in turns, evokes the story of Francis Ford Coppola unintentionally paying a former colleague of mine something like a million dollars to be in the background of one scene in Godfather II.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 74: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) BULLETIN: Biden pardons his son. Terrific. Fully support. Now, do the rest of us. Literally offer a pardon to anybody Trump might go after for prosecuting him, criticizing him, covering him, or looking at him funny. I want a 1-800-PARDONME hotline. I want 10 million pardons. SPECIAL COMMENT (2:44): And the pardons should be a jumping off point for how Biden can protect the citizens of this country. What does THIS mean, exactly? “I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.” Joseph Robinette Biden Junior has taken that exact oath NINE times – seven, as Senator, two as Vice President. He has sworn to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and nothing I have found, and no Constitutional scholar I have consulted, indicates that once taken, those oaths expire. And the obligation to defend the United States becomes more profound still now that presidents have been immunized by the Supreme Court from prosecution for.. effectively anything. The incoming President, the one who wants an unqualified toady like Kash Patel to head the FBI and desperately wanted a lawless menace like Matt Gaetz to head the DOJ but will instead settle for a cheap lawyer who LED the “lock her up” chanting against Hillary Clinton at the Republican convention, that president-to-be will be immune and thus unstoppable. The CURRENT president IS immune and thus unstoppable. And already in power and in command and… under oath. So. This raises this theoretical constitutional question: Do the TEN oaths Joe Biden took as Senator, as Vice President, and as President, even PERMIT him to NOT act against enemies, BOTH foreign and domestic – and defend the Constitution of the United States? So help him god? When the Supreme Court has immunized him from prosecution for doing… anything? Anything at all? As long as it's official? B-Block (24:52) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: You do realize that Trump's lies about his phone call with the president of Mexico means we will, soon or late, invade Mexico, right? The quote from the Trump Transition Team member to Rolling Stone is "How MUCH do we invade Mexico?" Trump has now nominated both his daughters' fathers-in-law as envoys to the Middle East - including the one who set up his brother-in-law with a taped sex sting and sent the tape to his own sister. And why did JD Vance post a meme of himself in a dress? C-Block (36:00) THE OTHER WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Vivek Ramaswamy self-owns over unelected bureaucracy. We've found George Carlin's Worst Doctor In The World and he owns The Los Angeles Times. And Sideshow Bob (RFK Junior) is seen, uh, hanging out, in his wife's new supplements commercial.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
SERIES 3 EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN BONUS EDITION: We are missing the POINT of the nominations of Sideshow Bobby Kennedy and Beavis and Botox Gaetz. This, simply, is Trump finding out how MUCH of a dictatorship his Republican House and Senate slaves will let him have. It's hard to believe that the literally worm-eaten brain of RFK Jr and the Madison Cawthorn wannabe that is Matt Gaetz could decide whether the Republicans will stop him here (or anywhere) but this is where we are. Because Trump is explaining his plan: I decide, I tell you what to do, and you do it or else. We are already HERE: THIS is the fork in the fascist road: deliberately choose people with no morals, no qualifications, and no qualities except absolute fealty to the dictator, then insist everybody else salute them. Same for Noem. Same for Gabbard. Same for Hegseth. Same for Patel. THE NEXT TEST will be openly demanding that he be permitted to run again in 2028, if he isn't dead by then. A lot of people asked me why I devoted so much time to the topic yesterday since it's a settled issue. Congressman Dan Goldman was concerned enough by Trump's third term "joke" to introduce a resolution affirming that the 22nd Amendment precludes it. Except, since early this year, the far right has been insisting that you're wrong, that's not what the 22nd Amendment says. The headline in a recent edition of the magazine The American Conservative: “TRUMP 2028.” Sub-head: “The 22nd Amendment is an arbitrary restraint on presidents who serve non-consecutive terms – and on democracy itself.” The American Conservative, by the way, is a "partner" of Project 2025.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What players from the squad can look forward to promotion to the senior side, and what does another campaign that finished in disappointment mean for coach Jim Crawford? Also, Sideshow Bob's rakes and I do a live countdown math problem! SERIES 3 EPISODE 42: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Go and look for Jack Smith's evidence against Trump on the front pages of America's newspapers and the top of America's newscasts. Go and look for the stories about the evidence he produced that there were not TWO coup attempts by Trump and his whores on January 6th, but three. Go. I'll wait. Not even 48 hours since the most damning document ever composed about an American president, makes the Watergate testimony look like the comedian's script at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, and it's already virtually disappeared from our American media because whether its leaders know it or not American media is not just in the tank for Trump but its leaders have already drowned there and there are only a few journalists left. But her emails. ALSO: Trump bleating about "Election Interference" and an "ironclad" DOJ rule that doesn't even exist, in any way shape or form. Trump insisting that the delays he caused make him the proverbial guy who wants to be treated as an orphan even though he killed his parents. Trump uttering a sound like "Wally." Mike Lawler in blackface, saying it doesn't count because he was simply pretending to be Michael Jackson. And the greatest story of the day: Melania Trump's publisher demanding $250,000 from CNN for an interview about her book (I mean, consider what kind of discount that represents!) B-Block (22:41) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Conservative commentator Kurt Schlichter insists the Democrats have never "excepted" a presidential loss. Because he's a moron. Congressman Tim Burchett does an antisemitism against George Soros. And Chris Cillizza quite seriously reveals something he has just calculated: that the election will be decided based on WHO GETS MORE VOTES IN THE BATTLEGROUND STATES! (Chris is a genius). C-Block (32:57) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: In an all-new episode, a story I haven't read you before, that rarest of Thurbers in which he is not the hero nor the lovable loser but the guy who has to leave town in embarrassment: the Zeph Leggin story: A Friend Of The Earth.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
For many of his fans, Kelsey Grammer is inseparable from his character Dr. Frasier Crane, who first appeared on “Cheers” and later got his own spin-off, “Frasier.” Last year, the actor reprised the role in a reboot of “Frasier” that's now in its second season. But Kelsey's connection to his most famous character runs deeper than simple nostalgia. He opens up about how the cast of “Frasier” became his family after he suffered several personal tragedies, why he didn't always feel welcomed on “Cheers,” and how he ended up voicing Sideshow Bob on “The Simpsons.”

For this week's bonus podcast, it's time for some Listener Questions! First off, we answer Breaunte's question, who wants to know how we'd make the Community Centre a bigger part of the show. Considering that this is a place that you're lucky to see the inside of more than ten times a year, there's certainly scope for it to be used a heck of a lot more, but what exactly would we do with it? We hope you're listening, Kate Brooks, cos we've got plenty of ideas! Next up, the chance to be a bit sillier and more imaginative as Frankie asks us which Simpsons characters would play which Weatherfield residents if the long-running animated sitcom were to do a crossover with the even longer-running soap. Would Homer play Steve or Tim? Which classic Corrie villain would Sideshow Bob suit best? Are there any couples of families who can be directly transposed? Hopefully if you're a Simpsons fan you like some of our ideas, and we'd love to hear yours too!

SERIES 2 EPISODE 87: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Dictator-On-Day-One Trump continues to measure the windows for the new curtains in his White House, and I don't know if that has been PROCESSED on the fascist side or if we have properly done so on the, you know, Non-Dictatorship Side but it is increasingly obvious that Trump is increasingly confident that he will seize power next year. That is the ONLY possible explanation for what he has now done: leaking, to the gullible and willing stenographers from Axios Mike Allen and Jim Vandehei for publication yesterday, a set of choices for his administration that would make Jair Bolsonaro blush: Vice President Tucker Carlson, Chief of Staff Steve Bannon, CIA Director Kash Patel, Attorney General Stephen Miller, or Attorney General Mike Davis, or Attorney General J.D. Vance, Secretary of Defense Tom Cotton, Secretary of Denial Kari Lake, Secretaries-of-to-be-announced Kristi Noem, Byron Donalds, Johnny McEntee, and of course Secretary of Lecterns Sarah Huckabee. We will never fully now, not even after the autopsy, what PRECISELY is wrong with Trump's brain but it seems clear that whatever it is one of its symptoms is that he must convince himself that he IS winning, WILL win, will ALWAYS win. Jack Smith is right and he IS a serial election denier but it's deeper than that: at his advanced age and with his advanced diseases, if he ever believed he was defeated, he would die – figuratively or maybe literally. So the greatest relief he could possibly have would be to believe, 334 days before it happens, that he has already won the 2024 election and that is how he is behaving and I'm not sure WHAT to do with that but it HAS to make him sloppy and vulnerable and better minds than ours can problem figure out which soft spot on his head to PUSH. What VALUE is there in saying “here's Tucker Carlson: psychopathic white supremacist whose career stability makes Keith Olbermann's look like that of Bob Cratchit – I'm going to put him in government. Along with Kari Lake, whose highest elected office was weekend weather-girl in Rock Island.” It's the kind of things you do NOT to rally your base and NOT to scare your opponents but because you really can't STOP yourself from doing them, and suddenly you are more convinced than ever than you can get away with them. And if that isn't a motto for the entire Trump Nazi Party I don't know what is. PLUS: Matt Gaetz is about to get Robespierred, J.D. Vance wants to get a head start on prosecutor writers. And competing January 6 Truthers fight it out over whose bullshit is true. (17:35) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: MAGA Congresswoman McClain makes a fool of herself but not as much as would-be MAGA Congressman Philip Sean Grillo does. The NFL coach who really doesn't have to "hand it to" the 9/11 plotters. Poor Nick Fuentes and Vivek Ramaswamy pushing white supremacy without realizing that if the Trumpers run out of brown immigrants, the next people they'll purge will be... Fuentes and Ramaswamy. It has been a big week of apologies in Footy, however we stand by the credence that one should only apologise for something they feel they did wrong or where they were at fault. Samantha stands firmly by the fact that the power surge that caused the podcast file to corrupt, was not caused by her and therefore no apology will be made. She is however very sorry you didn't get to hear some of the cracking listener content so we have included it in todays episode!Online as Dane is chasing the sun and to his delight we chat for a length of time about what on earth is happening with Auskick side, Carlton. Neil lets Matthew know that he has some good news regarding the upcoming event: we have tables! Neil talks about how he was able to score a wooden folding table at an incredible price from Craigslist. They sell merchandise? Stacia Garcia from The Real Estate Finder Podcast joins Matthew and Neil to add some good advice on where to find tables. Neil is shocked to learn that Staci has no idea what BocaVision is. Season 3 premiered on Youtube earlier in the week. With only three weeks to go, Matthew and Neil once again break down the Crusin' for a Bruisin' card. This is going to be BRCW's biggest card to date! It's going to be held at The VIP Ballroom at CBI. Speaking of venues, Matt and Neil discuss future plans regarding a venue they have in mind which is located right in Mizner Park. If all goes well, it will be epic! So Money in the Bank is in London, Will Matt and or Neil be going to London? The answer is… Yes! But not for MITB. Matt will be there, but unfortunately a week after. CCW held it's 2 year anniversary show of Bash at the Brew in Hialeah, FL with the main event being a steel cage match for the CCW championship between the champion, Ariel Levy against the Brazilian Destroyer, Viniciuos. Ariel was all bloodied up before he even entered the cage. In the end, we saw Vinicous pull out a box cutter, but it was to rip the ring canvas to expose the wooden planks and drive Ariel onto them. But that wasn't enough as Ariel had outside help. Matthew was very happy that Ariel retained as he is an Ariel Levy guy. Or maybe it's the other way around! The show closes with a very important piece of family tree history. Matthew lets us know that Luke Perry of 90210 fame and Sideshow Bob of the Simpsons are brothers. This makes AEW's Jungle Boy the nephew of Sideshow Bob. Now that is an interesting fact! And there are many other outstanding facts we learn all on this weeks episode of The Matthew Mania Podcast. Scores of Americans have grown up with Kelsey Grammer on their TV sets and on the silver screen screen, through his roles on Cheers and Fraiser, as the voice of Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons and Stinky Pete in Toy Story II. He's done a lot with his professional life. He's starred in countless stage shows, authored books, and dabbled in music. Now, in addition to all that he owns a beer company. It's called Faith American and it's based out of upstate New York, where he owns a home. The brand was started in 2019 but was put on pause at the start of Covid-19. It's been recently revived. The property that he hopes to one day open a tap room comes up a lot in this conversation as the thrust behind the beer ideas, but for now the beers are being made at Frog Alley, a Schenectady New York brewery helmed by brewer Rich Michaels. The three beers in the Faith American lineup – two IPAs and an Ale – currently have distribution through New York and New Jersey. As you'll hear he's supporting the beer through appearances, often at local bars, the kind of cozy places where regulars have their reserved seats, the kind of bars where… well you know. Beer and celebrity is interesting and there have been a lot of well-known and boldface names that have gotten into the alcohol business. George Clooney selling tequila. Ryan Reynolds selling gin. There are celebrities that have vineyards, some in name only and others who work the land. There has not been too much in the way of beer. There are some examples, but it's largely been barren on the celebrity supported and owner front. Grammer, as you'll hear, is all in and he's added personal touches to the brand that bring more to the beers than just his extensive acting resume.
