It's series 4 and we are back with a transatlantic bang. Joining Rob and Guy to kick us off is a legend of comedy writing. Bill Oakley was writer and showrunner on The Simpsons throughout the golden period and has gone on to create more such greats as Mission Hill and Space 1969. But Bill, like a lot of American comedy writers, is also a huge fan of British comedy. From the early days of Python and Benny Hill, through Blackadder and surprisingly perhaps an avid watcher of Gogglebox! But when we sent him our list, Bill was immediately drawn to another of his favourites, Mr Bean, which of course has fans all around the world, but despite going to see the 1997 spin-off Bean at the cinema, had no recollection. So, we are on hand to provide that. As we've seen in past episodes, a straight small to big screen transformation can be a difficult thing to achieve, but perhaps even more so with this character, famed for his lack of speech. But as with a lot of big screen outings for Britcom characters, 1997's Bean takes Rowan Atkinson's character abroad, this time to sunny Los Angeles, where we all hoped hilarity would ensue…but would it? Well, you'll have to tune it to find out! Mike and Bill discuss trends in the fast-food industry, Bill's shift towards reviewing a broader range of American foods and packaged goods, and his excitement for innovative condiments. They also talk about Bill's move into hosting ticketed dinners featuring regional cuisine, and how he beat Disney to the punch in trademarking the name "Steamed Hams" (his membership club is the Steamed Ham Society), a long-time Internet meme that originated from a script he wrote for the Simpsons. Bill Oakley, along with his best friend and writing partner Josh Weinstein, wrote various episodes of The Simpsons during it's glory days including “Marge Gets A Job”, “Bart vs Australia”, and the legendary 2-part season-straddling “Who Shot Mr Burns”, and they were appointed executive producers and showrunners for the 7th and 8th seasons of the show, where they continued to push the envelope of what the show could be, bowing out while the show was still on a high. One of Bill's greatest claims to fame is having written the “Steamed Hams” scene from the 1996 episode “22 Short Films About Springfield”. The scene has taken on a life of its own with various memes and recontextualizing videos springing up on the internet. Bill and Josh also created the short lived Mission Hill, and were consulting producers on Futurama. Bill has also worked on shows like Portlandia and The Cleveland Show. In 2018 Bill started to produce short Instagram videos of himself reviewing fast food items from American outlets. These videos have become a serious concern for Oakley, and he created the annual Steamie Awards, in reference to the steamed hams sketch of course. If you're a big Simpsons fan I hope you get something out of this, but if you're more of a casual viewer I hope you'll find it interesting to learn how a show like this gets made. X: @signalspodcastInstagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

Head for that orangy-brown couch under that sailboat picture. This weeks guest is That Bill Oakley; Seasoned TV writer and show runner for hits such as The Simpsons, Futurama and many more. Has a “seasoned” side of his own with his own brand of food reviews, from sit down to fast food. He's got an opinion and he does not care who knows it. This #Tastemaker is trailblazing in food critic circles. Think Gordon Ramsey with less of the knife & cooking skills. Similar hair though…. But he knows good food and will eat it! Fellow food enthusiasts: Bill Oakley has been gaining attention in the digital realm with his captivating and appetizing review content. What distinguishes Oakley from others? It's his sincere ardor for all things for & flavor that radiates through every video he publishes. Oakley's affection for quality food is well-known. In his review content, he delves deep into the realm of meats, delectable sauces, the newest drinks and more. Think Guy Fieri without the Camaro. Whether he's exploring a fresh establishment or discovering a rebrand. Oakley's zeal for food is unmistakable. It is this authentic fervor that has resonated with audiences all over. I can see it as the Ideal Fusion of Humor & Gastronomy. What distinguishes Oakley's review content is his distinctive amalgamation of humor and gastronomy. Leveraging his background as a writer for The Simpsons, Oakley imbues each video with comedy and cleverness, rendering them not only informative but also immensely enjoyable to behold. From witty quips to amusing taste trials, Oakley's videos are a treat for the senses in multiple ways. I felt very fortunate to share an hour with such a great part of childhood, cartoons, but to know he's a goodie like me and MOST of my viewers? Say less. Folks asked how does it relate to bbq. This week on The Hot Slice Podcast we are going behind the judges' curtain at this year's International Pizza Challenge at Pizza Expo in Las Vegas. Jeremy and Denise get the inside scoop on IPC judging from longtime judges Hassi Sadri, Scott Wiener and Scott Anthony. The International Pizza Challenge has long been the premier pizza competition and it's getting even better. IPC has always held high standards and code of ethics for judging. This year, judging has become even more transparent. Our three esteemed guests outline new initiatives to aid in transparency and training the 50 judges who will evaluate entries to help them be on the same page and make sure that every pizza is judged fairly and consistently. Pizza Expo will host nearly 500 competitors. The International Pizza Challenge consists of 5 divisions: Traditional, Non-Traditional, Neapolitan/STG, Pan, & World's Best Cheese Slice. The International Italian Sandwich Competition returns. Partner competitions include the California-Style Competition, hosted by the California Milk Advisory Board; Ooni Pizza Throwdown, hosted by Ooni; and Plant-Based Competition, hosted by Daiya. Special thanks to Michael LaMarca, Jeremy Galvin and the team at Master Pizza who runs IPC and show director Bill Oakley for their continued efforts and improvements to the competitions. Learn more about the International Pizza Challenge at https://pizzaexpo.pizzatoday.com/giveaway-rules-regulations/international-pizza-challenge/ Read more about the Rules and Regulations for Competitors at https://pizzaexpo.pizzatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/2024-IPC-Rules-and-Regs_FINAL.pdf
