Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theserialkillerpodcastWebsite: https://www.theserialkillerpodcast.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theskpodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialkillerpodX: https://twitter.com/serialkillerpod Hosted on Acast.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the standoff at Bundy Ranch. It was likely the most significant act of American armed civil disobedience in 160 years. And no one at the time could have predicted how it would end up. I don't expect everyone to agree with my conclusions but I'm weighing in on the matter from a position of mild authority as an eye witness to much of what took place leading up to the event and what followed. Here is a column I wrote in April 2014 for St. George News about The Bundys vs. the Bureaucracy. This was a column about a visit I made to Bundy Ranch two days before the standoff. Here's my account of my time at Bundy Ranch on the day of the standoff. The initial trials of those who were at Bunkerville in 2014 were a mockery of the concept of justice. I had the privilege of attending and reporting from the trial of Cliven, Ammon and Ryan Bundy and Ryan Payne in late 2017. Once the federal government's false narrative began to unravel, the judge had no choice but to declare a mistrial. Here is my column of what happened in the courtroom the day the case against the Bundys was dismissed with prejudice. And a recap of looking back on Bundy Ranch 4 years after that fateful day. Bud gets Kelly a part in a Romantic Roast coffee commercial and when Kelly's co-star fails to perform up to expectations, Bud gets Jefferson the part. Jefferson's character Lance wins him legions of female fans which upsets Marcy but also ensures that two more commercials will be made with Kelly and Jefferson. Betsy Gaines Quammen - A Fascinating History of Public Lands in the West

Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and conservationist, and she's also the author of the excellent book "American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, & Public Lands in the West." Betsy has enjoyed a long career in the conservation world, working on issues ranging from grizzly bears in the West to fish in Mongolia to wildlife in East Africa. She also holds a doctorate in Environmental History from Montana State University, where her dissertation focused on the Mormon settlement of the West and public land conflicts. With such a depth of expertise on such a wide range of subjects, I was thrilled to have Betsy join me for a conversation about her book, public lands, and the West. - "American Zion" has been recommended to me numerous times since it was published in early 2020. Many of my most knowledgeable friends told me it was a must-read for anyone trying to make sense of the present-day threats to public lands here in the West. Well, I finally read it a few weeks ago, and I can confirm that my friends were correct– the book provided me with much-needed, nuanced context for understanding both specific public lands controversies and broader political threats. It also provided fascinating insights into the mindsets and goals of the Bundy family– the people behind the infamous occupation of Malheur Wildlife Refuge and the Battle of Bunkerville. I was also fascinated by the beliefs of the Bundys and their ancestors, and how their ideas about everything from religious texts to the US Constitution have influenced public discourse in the West and beyond. - Betsy and I connected last week and had a fun and educational conversation about everything from her career as a conservationist to her in-person interactions with the Bundy family. We started out discussing how she became interested in the West and why the Morman settlement of the West became the focus of her work. We discuss the Mormon prophets Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, and how and why Mormons settled in the West. We talked about how perceived persecution by the US government has served as a faith-building experience for the Bundys and their followers, and whether or not the Bundys truly believe the prophesies that they preach. We discuss the Sagebrush Rebellion, the Malheur takeover, the Battle of Bunkerville, and how Betsy thinks about her personal safety when writing about potentially violent people. She also talks about how "American Zion" was positively received by her Mormon friends, describes her current book project, and recommends tons of books that you'll want to check out. Links to everything are in the episode notes. - It was great to finally have the opportunity to chat with Betsy, and I sincerely appreciate her taking the time. Bud and his three "frat bros," Hindu Achmed, fatso Hummer, and nerdy Barney, are set to leave for Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale in hopes of scoring some drunken babes. They have the tickets and the hotel reservation. That is, until Kelly, the naughty Fawn, the steamy Ashley, and the nerdy (but minus the headgear) Natalie, make them believe that they want to spend Spring Break with Bud and his pals. The girls say that in order to cheat on their boyfriends with Bud and his pals they need the tickets and reservation in order to "send away the boyfriends" and the con succeeds. Meanwhile, Al and Griff sell a lot of shoes for girls leaving for Spring Break and wish they also could go, leaving them in a cold and powerless shoe store during a city-wide blackout resulting from a blizzard. Jefferson arrives and lets it slip that he's going to Fort Lauderdale to act as a judge in a beauty contest, behind Marcy's back, of course. Al and Griff then realize they can spend the money to go to Fort Lauderdale. Marcy arrives at the Bundys to find the boys still waiting for the girls to arrive. Together, they witness the girls, as well as Al, Griff, and Jefferson on TV at Fort Lauderdale. Marcy and the boys decide to go after them to get revenge. My guest today is Mark Kenyon. Mark is a hunter, author, fellow-podcaster, and dedicated conservationist. He is the first guest of the show who is not a climber! Through rich outdoor experiences growing up, Mark took a dive deep into the world of conservation and public lands history. Now his entrepreneurial experience in conservation is nothing short of exceptional. The combination of hard work with his podcast, Wired to Hunt; his private land conservation efforts on the Back 40 project; and through his book, That Wild Country, his passion for and knowledge for our nation's wild lands runs deep. The main theme of the episode revolves around the notion of “public lands unite us.” We talk extensively about how the conservation and outdoor community, including hunters and climbers, have rallied together at imperative moments to create positive change when threats to our public lands were imminent. These victories we have seen in recent years are due to the effort and passion among all outdoor users joining forces. Mark provides a fresh perspective on the current state of our public lands through the eyes of a hunter, and walks us through where we started, where we have been, and where we are going. 0:31 – Intro 1:31 – Mark Kenyon: Hunter and angler, not a climber 4:02 – Conservation awareness 6:00 – More than just a public lands user 6:55 – Challenging assumptions about public lands and conservation 10:43 – Mark's podcast, Wired to Hunt, and his experience at Google 17:42 – The hunter's paradox 19:50 – Lessons and takeaways from Wired to Hunt 22:50 – The Back 40 26:43 – Transactional vs. participatory relationship with the outdoors 28:32 – “Giving away” the Back 40 29:22 – Mark's book, That Wild Country 33:20 – Starting his book with the Bundys and the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge 36:07 – Not here just on behalf of the hunting and fishing communities 38:24 – Are hunters the original conservationists? 44:15 – Declining numbers of hunters and anglers 49:22 – Top threats to climbers and hunters 53:10 – Joining forces and the resiliency of the conservation community 1:03:07 – Tools and resources Mark's Instagram: @wiredtohunt Wired to Hunt: http://wiredtohunt.com/ The Back 40 Project: https://www.themeateater.com/watch/series/back-40 Back 40 Mini Series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOHFTvDmsbE That Wild Country: https://www.amazon.com/That-Wild-Country-Journey-Americas/dp/1542043042/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= High Country News: https://www.hcn.org/ Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership: https://www.trcp.org/ Center for Western Priorities: https://westernpriorities.org/ “Public Lands Unite Us”: https://www.accessfund.org/open-gate-blog/our-public-lands-can-unite-us
