Do you have a big ego? Do you know someone who has? This Quackcast is about utilising egos for comic characters for comedic purposes, to humanise character, or to make villains more unlikeable and or funny. Big egos are a sign of poor self esteem, people inflate their egos to cope with feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For examples of that we have a certain prominent politician and also a tech billionaire as perfect representations of every facet of that concept. :) Personally I LOVE a protagonist with a big, inflated ego, especially if it's also illustrated that it's undeserved, and often shown punctured. It's pretty uncommon for protagonists to have big egos though unfortunately because people see that as weakness in their character and status rather than making them more interesting. Big egos are far more common in villains, mostly because it's seen as a negative trait, but also because it's an easy way to show how weak and pathetic they are, they're also a goldmine for easy laughs. The latter is the reason that the characters with the biggest egos in fiction are often not the main villain but the villain's lieutenant. My favourite protagonists with big egos are Tank Girl, George Costanza from Seinfeld, Duckman (played by the same actor as George. Jason Alexander), Flashman from the books by George MacDonald Fraser, Space Dandy, Basil Faulty from Faulty Towers, Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping up Appearances, and Meg from the series Drifters. I'd love to name more but it's not a common trait, though you can point out a million villains with massive egos. In the Quackcast I examine Conan the Barbarian as a story about ego: Conan acquires a massive ego as a reaction to being kidnapped as a child and living as a slave, then being trained as a gladiator and lauded with praise and women. That only increases when he gets his freedom, joins his friends and becomes a successful thief. He's then tasked with rescuing a princess from a cult and returning her to her father. His ego is so big he eschews the help of his friends and tries to do it alone. He's captured by the villain, Thulsa Doom, the same man who killed his mother and enslaved him. Thulsa lectures him on the strength of ego and manipulation before crucifying Conan on a tree. As he dies, Conan's ego dies with him. His friends find his body and take him back, reviving him without ego. In then end Conan defeats Thulsa Doom, Thulsa expects his ego to dominate Conan and save himself but Conan kills him the same way Thulsa killed his mother, and does it totally without ego. As a last gesture he burns down Thulsa's temple and his cult disbands: the last two symbols of Thulsa Doom's over inflated ego. Do you agree with my take on Conan the Barbarian? Do you like characters to have a big ego? If so, what are your fave examples? Welcome to West Virginia Commonplace! Today, we're going to pay homage to one of my favorite animated series from the past, Duckman. The show revolves around the adventures of Duckman, a private detective known for his wit and flawed personality, as he navigates his dysfunctional family and solves bizarre cases. Duckman gained popularity for its edgy and irreverent humor, as well as its satirical approach to social and political issues. The series was produced by Classco SIPCO, the same production company behind Rugrats, and they brought their unique animation style and storytelling technique to Duckman. From 1994 to 1997, Classco SIPCO co-produced the show in conjunction with Paramount Television Network. Everett Peck, the creator of the original Duckman comic book character, developed the series, and Klasky Csupo's involvement added their distinct visual style, making the show visually bold and memorable. However, Duckman faced some challenges during its run. It aired on the USA Network during nighttime, which made it difficult for young fans like myself to watch it without sneaking around when our parents weren't paying attention. At the time, I wasn't familiar with Jason Alexander, who voiced Duckman, and was surprised to see a well-known actor taking part in such a different project while he was also starring in Seinfeld. Despite having a dedicated following, Duckman encountered difficulties with the network, clashed with executives, and faced challenges from advertisers due to its perceived lack of family-friendliness. Eventually, the show lost some of its popularity, leading to its cancellation. However, Duckman remains a recognized and beloved show within the realm of adult animation. The characters in Duckman were fearless and unfiltered, with Duckman himself known for his quick and often provocative remarks. Here's an excerpt to give you a taste of his style: "Your ability to generate money doesn't make you a man. It makes you an ATM with legs. It makes you a commodity, which I guess is fitting since you dress like a whore."

He was raised Jewish. A class clown in his youth, Deezen aspired to become a stand-up comedian; he moved to Hollywood within days of graduating high school in order to pursue a comedy career. As a stand-up comedian, Deezen performed at The Comedy Store and appeared on an episode of The Gong Show in the mid-1970s, only to be gonged by singer-songwriter Paul Williams. After a poorly-received act and having difficulty memorizing his routine, Deezen eventually decided to abandon stand-up and focus on acting. In 1977, Deezen landed his first role in the film Grease, playing nerdy student Eugene Felsnic. Following the commercial success of Grease, Deezen was cast in a series of comedy films, including Robert Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Steven Spielberg's epic comedy 1941. By 1979, Deezen was in such demand that he was frequently obliged to decline some roles as he was already working: two such notable instances included the characters of Eaglebauer in Rock 'n' Roll High School and Spaz in Meatballs, both of which he turned down to appear in 1941. Throughout the early 1980s, Deezen appeared in several high-profile studio releases, including Midnight Madness (1980), Zapped! (1982) and WarGames (1983), as well as reprising the role of Eugene Felsnic in Grease 2 (1982), one of only seven actors from the original Grease to return for the sequel. In 1984, Deezen was cast in a major television role, playing the role of superintendent Eddie on the first season of the NBC sitcom Punky Brewster. After filming eight episodes, however, Deezen quit due to his discomfort while performing for a live audience and continuing difficulty in remembering his line Deezen eventually found full-time voice work on television in the mid-1990s, playing recurring characters on the animated series Grimmy, Duckman, Kim Possible and What's New, Scooby-Doo?, as well as guest spots on many others, including Johnny Bravo, Recess, and Darkwing Duck. His best-known voice-over character, however, is that of Mandark, the nemesis of the eponymous Dexter on Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory, a role he played for the series' entire run from 1996 to 2003. Deezen also voiced the character on the TV special Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip and the video games Cartoon Network Racing and FusionFall. Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co

Be different. Creativity fascinated me for as long as I can remember. Over the years, my passion for creative expression grew—from art to music to fashion—the originality and boldness of my influences inspired me to be different. My love of collecting tees with original and imaginative graphics motivated me to start my own unique graphic tee business. My greatest influences for Rejecks stem from 90s pop culture—from Johnny Cupcakes and Kyle Crawford to LA Gears, Busta Rhymes, Duckman, and Child's Play. The 90s encouraged me to think outside the box—there was no normal—and dared me to unleash my creative spirit. I first encountered Johnny Cupcakes in 2008 when I came upon his store in Boston. Walking into Johnny's store, I was overwhelmed by the amount of detail devoted to making the bakery concept come to life. Even though I was in a clothing store, Johnny truly captured his artistic vision by immersing his consumers in an environment that was a real-life extension of his imagination. At that moment, I realized that attention to "detail" is critical to being successful. As well, Kyle Crawford of Electric Zombie motivated me to express my own passions through tees and accessories. He shared his passion for 80s and 90s pop culture—and zombies—through his tees. Crawford's love for zombies, the WWE, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles instantly grabbed my attention and the honesty of his blog only furthered my interest in him. These people and the culture of the 90s inspired me to make my own creative legacy—and to be bold about it. I wanted to share my love and passion for detailed imagery and pop culture with others through my own designs. Then, in came Stephanie who shared my ambition to create—as well as a love for graphic tees and 80s & 90s pop culture, and our partnership was born. Along with our shared interests and passions, we both wanted to capture these ideas through our tees. And so, Stephanie and I started on the path to bring you Rejecks. We hope to share our interests and passion—and our individual creativity—through each shirt with all of our fellow Rejecks!
