Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Second to last European final of the season on tap tomorrow as Real Betis faces Chelsea. Isco, who earned a call-up to the Spanish national team for the UEFA Nations League, is one of the key players to watch along with Antony. The winger on loan from Manchester United has been outstanding with 7 goal contributions in 8 Conference League matches since arriving in January. Manuel Pellegrini is coaching in his first European final in his illustrious career, Betis are playing in their first European final as well. Keep in mind, English clubs have lost their last nine European finals against Spanish opposition going back to Liverpool's 2001 UEFA Cup win over Alavés. Lots of potential injury issues for Betis, we'll get you updates hopefully tomorrow ahead of the match on a special Wednesday Morning Espresso. International break next week as World Cup qualifiers take center stage. Lots of eyes will be on Brazil playing their first matches under Carlo Ancelotti's leadership. He left Neymar out due to injury but did recall Casemiro. UEFA Nations League finals will also take place with Spain facing France in one semifinal and Portugal facing Germany in the other. Will that semifinal performance from Cristiano Ronaldo potentially earn him a move to play for a club in the Club World Cup? It might be possible after his social media posts yesterday, seemingly saying goodbye to Al Nassr after their season ended without major success. He's out of contract at the end of June and there's been whispers of interest from Brazilian clubs and Monterrey in bringing him in for the Club World Cup. It's going to grab all the tabloid headlines for sure. Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso are trying to get Trent Alexander-Arnold in for the Club World Cup, but Liverpool want a substantial sum to let him out of his contract a month early. Reports out of Spanish TV indicate that the asking price could be as high as $5M. Al Hilal are trying desperately to get Simone Inzaghi as their new manager, offering to make him the highest paid manager in the world. He has one more match with Inter this season, the Champions League final on Saturday. He wasn't absolutely committed to continuing with the Italian club afterwards, saying that "certain conditions" needed to be met first. Another subplot to watch ahead of the Club World Cup. In Italy as Napoli continues to celebrate their Serie A title, they might be adding a key piece for next season while saying goodbye to someone else. Kevin de Bruyne is reportedly close to joining Napoli on a free from Manchester City. But he'll have a new manager to work for, as it looks like Antonio Conte is set to leave the club and Max Allegri is the leading name mentioned as his successor. Even in successful times, it's never quiet in Naples. For more news today and conversation, check out the video edition on YouTube or the audio on Spreaker. See y'all tomorrow for another edition of the Morning Espresso. Listen to Atlanta Soccer Tonight this evening on 92.9 The Game & the Audacy app starting at 10pm.

For this episode, we are joined by a dream guest - it's former Coventry City, Southampton and Celtic manager Gordon Strachan! Part 1 of the podcast came out on Monday, so if you missed it... make sure to go back and listen! Gordon shares all on his time at Coventry City: from working with Big Ron Atkinson to having Noel Whelan as a lodger, and even trying to bring a teenage Andrea Pirlo to Highfield Road! He talks us through his spell at Southampton and gives us his thoughts on Rupert Lowe's bold decision to bring Sir Clive Woodward into football. And of course, we get into his period at Celtic – featuring all the chaos and comedy of trying (and failing) to make sense of Thomas Gravesen! Plus, our inbox is BULGING! We dig into your excellent correspondence… but seriously, was the kick-off of Liverpool's UEFA Cup semi-final against Barcelona really delayed because of Eastenders? With Europe firmly in the grip of English dominance, it was the turn of one of the country's best cup teams to step up. Gareth Dace, historian of Tottenham Hotspur in the 1980s and 1990s, joins Martyn this week to take us through the UEFA Cup winning run of 1983/84. Battle-hardened by narrow exits to Barcelona and Bayern Munich in recent seasons, it was a squad ready to go all the way. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

rWotD Episode 2826: 1982–83 S.L. Benfica season Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 28 January 2025 is 1982–83 S.L. Benfica season. The 1982–83 season was Sport Lisboa e Benfica's 79th season in existence and the club's 49th consecutive season in the top flight of Portuguese football, covering the period from 1 July 1982 to 30 June 1983. Benfica competed domestically in the Primeira Divisão and the Taça de Portugal, and participated in the UEFA Cup after coming in second in previous league. In the new season, manager Lajos Baróti was replaced by Sven-Göran Eriksson. The Swede released several players from the squad, but only added Diamantino Miranda. The league campaign saw Benfica win the first eleven league games, opening a four-point gap by the end of the first round. In Europe, Benfica progressed through the UEFA Cup, by eliminating Real Betis, KSC Lokeren and FC Zürich. The domestic campaign in the second half of the season was less impressive, with Benfica having three batches of two consecutive draws. In the UEFA Cup, Benfica eliminated Roma in the quarter-finals and Universitatea Craiova in the semis, before they meeting Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup final. An away loss and home draw cost them the trophy. Still, five consecutive wins in the final five league matches secured the club's 25th Primeira Divisão title. The last match of the season, the Taça de Portugal final was postponed and only played in the following season. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:07 UTC on Tuesday, 28 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 1982–83 S.L.

This week we're revisiting the epic 2003 UEFA Cup final between a young Jose Mourinho's Porto and veteran Martin O'Neill's Celtic. We breakdown both club's squads and stars (Deco! Henrik Larsson!), tactics, and storylines, before diving into their respective runs to the final, then the final itself. Join us in the time capsule, where two famous sides gave us the ultimate spectacle that just so happened to be a pivot point in the history of European football. Cheers to (can't believe we're saying this) Jose Mourinho!

At the start of April 1981, it looked likely that Bobby Robson's Ipswich Town were going to win an incredible treble of the league, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup. How those dreams were dashed and how others benefitted is the subject of this two-part series. In this first episode, Martyn is joined by Richard Moss of 'The Suffolk Crunch', the author Colin Plumb who attended nearly every Ipswich game that season, Mike Leigh of 'The Spurs Show' and the BBC's Pat Murphy, who was a young reporter covering the Midlands at the time, to put together the background as to how these three teams were built and ready for glory. Welcome back to Stick to Football, brought to you by SkyBet. In today's special guest episode, we have none other than our very own Jamie Carragher in the spotlight. Joining him are former England teammates Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, along with Roy Keane and Ian Wright, as the Liverpool legend reflects on his remarkable career, which saw him lift a Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, three League Cups, and a UEFA Cup. A true one-club man, Carragher— who ranks second in Liverpool's all-time appearance list with 737 games at the Anfield side —shares stories from his childhood as an Everton supporter, even recalling how he wore the Toffees' blue shirt to his academy training sessions. Carragher, who played under managers including Gérard Houllier, Rafa Benítez, and Fabio Capello, opens up about his limited time in the England setup and discusses how a Premier League title narrowly escaped him. Lastly he reveals his all-time Liverpool XI; do you agree with his choices? If you enjoyed the episode, don't forget to let us know in the comments. Another episode in our series "Legends of the 70s"This episode is with Peter Barnes.Peter Barnes began his career as an apprentice at Manchester City in July 1972 and turned professional two years later. He made his Football League debut in October 1974, aged 17. He scored in City's 1976 League Cup final victory and was named as PFA Young Player of the Year. He played in the UEFA Cup and unsuccessful First Division title campaigns, scoring 22 goals in 151 appearances in all competitions. He became West Bromwich Albion's record buy at £748,000 in July 1979 and spent two seasons at the club, scoring 25 goals in 92 matches. Leeds United broke their club record transfer when signing him for £750,000 plus £180,000 "tariffs" in 1981. The move proved to be a poor one and, after Leeds were relegated into the Second Division, he was bought by Spanish club Real Betis for £300,000. He made 16 La Liga appearances, scoring one goal, before returning to Leeds United for the 1983–84 season.Barnes was signed by Coventry City for £65,000 in October 1984, but was dropped by the end of the 1984–85 campaign. Former West Bromwich Albion manager Ron Atkinson then signed him to Manchester United for a fee of £30,000 and a run of good form prompted speculation of a return to the international fold, before he suffered a calf injury in November 1985. He was sold to former club Manchester City for £20,000 in January 1987,With Paul Collinsedited by Chris Browne for SRBMediawww.srbmedia.co.ukSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/srbmedia.
Joining Michael Dawson and Paul Miles is a UEFA Cup winner and prolific bagsman, Mark Falco! Joining Michael Dawson and Paul Miles is our legendary former midfielder, Micky Hazard!Hazard, a name etched in the annals of our storied history, embarked on his Spurs journey when he moved to north London from his hometown of Sunderland in his teenage years. Despite bouts of homesickness, he soon settled into his new home and went on to establish himself as a key player with technical prowess at a time when the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles were senior players to mentor and hone his ability. From that moment, the midfield maestro's time at the Club was marked by his role in the 1981 FA Cup triumph and then added another layer to his legacy when he played a pivotal part in our 1984 UEFA Cup victory

"We are unbeaten in our three Champions League home games against PSV (W1 D2), with our sole victory coming in the 2004/05 season. However both of our goals netted in those home games were own goals by PSV defender Alex, three years apart. PSV were the only side to beat us in last season's Europa League, winning 2-0 at home. They've won none of their four previous visits to our corner of north London in all competitions (D2 L2), with these games seeing just four goals scored in total. We have progressed past the first group stage in each of our last 17 appearances in the Champions League. We last failed to do so in 1999/00, going on to lose that season's UEFA Cup final on penalties to Galatasaray."
