The conversation touches on the comparison between the RAF and other services, such as the US Army Air Force, and the different approaches to mental health care. Jane, Mary and Dan explore the use of anaesthesia and the importance of sleep and rest in forward psychiatric units during World War II.The team delves into the lack of moral fibre policy (and the many myths surrounding it) and how post-war understanding was influenced by changing medical beliefs and veterans' hopes for recognition. The fear of being labelled lacking in moral fibre was a real threat for aircrews and was equated with cowardice. The impact of the policy may have been exaggerated, but it was an effective deterrent. Sometimes when we are feeling overwhelmed, we have to ask ourselves some hard questions, like: “Am I causing my own chaos?” When we understand our non-negotiables and say yes to what aligns with our values rather than what we think others expect from us, we can enjoy contentment in our motherhood. In today's episode I'm chatting with Andrea Dekker, a wife and mother of 4 young children who loves nothing more than being home! Andrea blogs at andreadekker.com, where she shares her passions for creating a peaceful home, pursuing a simpler + slower lifestyle, and encouraging women in all stages of life to lean into their values and live more intentionally. We chat about the transition to motherhood that caused her to feel overwhelmed, how she learned to start saying “no” and embrace her season of motherhood, and what back-to-school routines look like in her home! When you think of the word “legacy”, what comes to mind? What we leave behind for the ones we love? What if I told you that the legacy we leave our kids is a result of our actions today? In this eye-opening conversation with Julie Redmond on the Mom Made Plans podcast, we discuss the unhealthy coping mechanisms (including scrolling) that I've used to deal with the stresses of motherhood, and how recognizing the legacy I wanted to leave has allowed me to shift my perspective. I also offer some tactical strategies on how to leave a legacy by how we live in the mundane moments of motherhood. Julie, a two-time guest on Moms Overcoming Overwhelm, is a twin mom and host of the  Mom Made Plans podcast.  She is on a mission to make mom-life feel easier by getting out of survival mode and into intentional motherhood. As you embark on your decluttering and simplifying journey, you start to ask yourself questions such as: What am I making space for? What dreams have been buried in the stuff and chaos around me? Where do I find my self-worth as a mom and woman? Is it in the roles that I play and the things I own, or something deeper? When we start simplifying and creating space in our homes, calendars, and minds, it opens up so much more than extra square footage or hours in our day. It allows us to dream, to see where our self-worth truly comes from outside what we have and what we do, and to reach our greatest potential as moms and women. On today's episode, simplicity coach Rose Lounsbury and I discuss these topics and much more! Rose helps busy working moms declutter their homes, simplify their work lives, and clear their minds. After struggling to balance a teaching career and 2-year-old triplets, Rose was introduced to minimalism in 2012. Inspired by the “less is more” philosophy, she let go of 70% of her family's possessions in eight months. She eventually left the classroom to pursue a career helping other working moms create happier lives with less stuff. Rose's advice has been featured on TEDx and USA Today, and she's been a guest on Good Day Columbus, WYSO, WVXU, and Good Morning Cincinnati. We can't control our thoughts and according to research we have 12,000-16,000 of them a day. James Paul Watson (known as Paul) joined the Irish Guards straight from school and completed 6 operational tours including Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He sustained a spinal injury in Afghanistan, which ultimately led to his medical discharge from the British Army in 2015. He immediately enrolled at Salford University where he graduated in 2018 with a degree in Political Contemporary History before being elected as a local councillor. Whilst at university, Paul began to become disillusioned with society's relationship with the veteran community - specifically how our injured veterans are dependent on charities for support post-service.Paul fundamentally believes that it is the responsibility of local and national government to provide for our veteran's aftercare, as it was the politicians and not the charitable sector that send us to war, hence, the accountability lies solely with them. Paul was diagnosed with complex PTSD in 2017 and uses his platform to promote positive mental health by being honest and open about his own battles with PTSD.In 2021, Paul released his memoirs where he challenges the MoD's policy regarding the mental health of both serving personnel and veterans, and in 2022 founded the Ex-Forces Union to lobby on behalf of our veterans.LINKS:Join our Facebook Group community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2314725475490967/Engage with us on LinkedIn here:https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13628154/Insta/Twitter/Facebook: @CampaignForceUKor email the host jonny@campaignforce.co.ukhttps://www.exforcesunion.org/OP Courage: Mental health support for veterans, service leavers and reservists - NHS (www.nhs.uk)Combat Stress is the UK's leading mental health charity for veterans  Call them on 0800 138 1619, text them on 07537 404 719 or email helpline@combatstress.org.uk.Support the show✅Support The Show Help Us Grow! Paul Maleary's Ex-Job Downloaded Podcast

Andy Unwin MBE is a serving member of the British Army. He was instrumental in the introduction of the medicine ball challenge. His decision to launch this project was made following the untimely death of his friend Reece Miller who was fondly known as smiler. Reece had taken his own life.Andy considered his options to raise awareness . he saw that mental health was a weight which anyone can carry but it's not visible. He took a medicine ball, a chain and a pair of handcuffs and wore the weight it for 2 weeks, day and night! He launched the concept on International Men's Day 2018. Initially he was purchasing the equipment himself. The first participant was Andy Reid MBE, andy is a Triple Amputee. Andy was becoming overwhelmed by the amount of interest when he received a welcomed call from Andy Perkins of the Royal Military Police. The pair joined forces and the project goes from strength to strength. The team now receive significant support from the Army Benevolent fund and Combat Stress who provide the equipment to willing participants! The likes of JP Morgan, The Fire Service, Members of the Police and Security Institute have become active supporters.Andy received the MBE because of his efforts. The announcement came shortly after Andy had lost his wife to suicide; it was a bittersweet experience. At the insistence of his mum, he attended the ceremony at Windsor Castle where he met HRH Prince William.Andy's mantra is “Don't make a permanent decision over a temporary emotion”.If you want to take part or donate, please click on the link! He is the founder of Pinwheel Associates,  where he helps organizations address the common friction points during times of change so people can show up as their most balanced, capable, and productive selves. He has also been recognized as one of the heroes on September 11, 2001.  At 22 years old, he emerged from the debris after escaping the 81st floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center minutes before the building's collapse. As shift workers, we can be highly stressed purely by the roles that we perform, and that may bring about episodes of using food for comfort.Facing the struggles of stress and stress eating head-on, we've got expert Shannon Beer here to help us unravel the threads of temptation and self-soothing with food. Shannon joins me to explain why we often find ourselves turning to food after a tough shift and how we can combat this impulse with healthier strategies.   Leveraging her knowledge on the subject, Shannon introduces us to a transformative practice: compassionate letter writing. A technique designed to foster a more understanding attitude towards our physical and mental health, it's a powerful tool in reducing susceptibility to highly palatable, calorically dense food choices.Shannon doesn't stop there, she digs deeper into the structure of a compassionate letter, illustrating how this tactic helps us acknowledge our challenges, own our choices, and create strategies to support ourselves in a better way. Self-compassion, as we discuss, plays a pivotal role in this process. We also touch upon mindfulness and journaling as additional aids to nurture a gentler commitment to oneself. Our conversation aims to arm shift workers, and anyone else wrestling with stress, with the tools to make healthier food decisions and manage stress more effectively. Do you find yourself up late at night searching for scholarships, and ways to pay for college without parental help? Do you wake up worried about everything, and just want to make sure you're following God's plan for your life?   In this podcast for Christian college girls, you will learn to find GOD'S path for your college journey, and graduate with no loans or debt!   I get it! It is so tough doing things the world‘s way, when everybody else is doing life without God and in their own strength, making poor choices, and taking out loans. So, if you're ready to stop dreading making decisions, and find EASY solutions to help you pay for college while following His path for your life, this podcast is for you!   Hey there! I'm Kara Walker, a twenty-something entrepreneur, amateur snowboarder, recovering over-achiever, and debt-free college graduate. In college, I too was a stressed college student, looking for money and mental peace. I wondered if there were other ways to pay for college besides loans, and wished for clear direction on how to make college and career decisions! Not only was I worried about drowning in debt, but also afraid I hadn't heard Jesus correctly. Was I studying the wrong thing? Was I completely off track?   I felt semi-out of control and was spiraling, until I learned how to hear from God and follow His direction. He guided me and gave me the stepping stones to pay for college.  Scholarships, grants, testing out of classes, and other weird school hacks got me through debt-free!   And, I'm here to teach you HOW to do this, too.   If you are ready to find answers about your future, have an intimate and fruitful relationship with Jesus, and have enough money to KILL it at college, this pod is for you!
