In this thought-provoking episode of "A Beginner's Guide to AI," Professor Gep-Hardt takes listeners on a captivating journey through the lens of H.G. Wells' classic science fiction novel, 'The Time Machine.' We explore the profound parallels between Wells' visionary tale and the contemporary world of AI, delving into themes of technology-driven class division, the loss of human agency, and the ethical implications of AI development. Discover how the novel's depiction of a future split into the Eloi and Morlocks offers a cautionary tale about the potential impact of AI on society. We discuss the risks of over-reliance on AI, the dangers of a power imbalance, and the importance of ethical considerations in AI advancement. Join us as we analyze a real-world case study on workforce automation, reflecting on how AI is reshaping the nature of work and the challenges of managing this transition. We also invite AI enthusiasts to contribute to the conversation, encouraging a deeper understanding of AI's complexities. This episode is not just an exploration of AI concepts; it's an invitation to ponder the future of technology and humanity. Tune in for an enlightening discussion that bridges the gap between fiction and reality, urging us to contemplate the patterns we create in the ever-evolving landscape of AI. Ralston College presents a lecture delivered on March 17th, 2022 by Theodore Dalrymple (aka Anthony Daniels) on H. G. Wells's extraordinary 'scientific romance,' 'The Time Machine'.  A brilliant seer and prophet with a very pessimistic view of humanity, Wells was, nevertheless, a naive and shallow political thinker. The two sides of his mind—the artistic and the ideological; the 'unofficial' and the 'official'—were in conflict. In his writings and personal life, Wells embodied the cultural and philosophical schisms underlying the most important political and sociological questions of our time.  Wells's prescient insights, and troubling self-contradictions point to deep questions at the heart of human nature.

Compares is back! Kind of... In this series we will be comparing different types of time travel across film, TV, games and maybe even books, discussing what we like about them, how realistic they are (as a general rule not very) and how well they service the story. This time Oliver and Tom take a look at a couple of the earliest writings of time travel (more specifically in the time machine sense) and discuss 'The Time Machine' by HG Wells (as well as the author a little bit in general) as well as a few other early writings that mess with time in one way or another...

Published in 1895, Wells paints a vision of the distant future in his first novel. Considered to be one of science fiction’s most important authors, Wells contributed to the genre with many notable works; “The Island of Doctor Moreau”, “The Invisible Man”, and “The War of the Worlds”. In his non-fiction futurologist works, Wells predicted the advent of airplanes, space travel and even Wikipedia – although he called it “Permanent World Encyclopaedia”. The term itself “Time Machine” was coined by Wells and is now universally used to refer to any such vehicle. - 'M'Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/snoozecast)
