Rebecca Thorne's new novel is 'The Grief House', it's about the ex-tarot reader Blue, who escapes to a grief retreat on a beautiful country estate. Only, when the weather closes in, and someone disappears in the night, Blue wonders whose grief might hide a deeper secret.Rebecca published 2 psychological thriller books under the name Rebecca Tinnelly, and we discuss why she swapped names and how it helped her break up her day, and switch between tasks. You can hear why her date is structured pretty thoroughly, why she likes to be as cosy as possible for the first draft, and how mentoring at the Faber Academy changes the way she thinks about her own writing. We also get very deep into why Rebecca is very passionate about verb placement. This week's pod is sponsored by 'Who is the Cheese Wire Killer?', take a listen wherever you get your podcasts.Support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. This is my first conversation with 2 authors at the same time, and it's fascinating - we get to hear a comparison between 2 people's approaches to their writing, which is really interesting.Harriet Tyce was born and grew up in Edinburgh. She graduated in English from Oxford University in 1994, and after gaining legal qualifications worked as a criminal barrister for nearly ten years. After leaving the law she started writing, gaining a distinction in an MA in Creative Writing (Crime Fiction) from the University of East Anglia in 2017.Harriet has written four novels, Blood Orange, The Lies You Told, It Ends At Midnight and A Lesson in Cruelty which will be published on 11 April 2024. Emma Harcourt is a Sydney-based writer who works a researcher and journalist as well as an author. After completing the Faber Academy course in 2011, Emma began writing historical fiction. The result was two novels: the first being the critically acclaimed international best-selling title 'The Shanghai Wife' published in 2018 and now 'The Brightest Star' released earlier this year by HQ Fiction. Whilst I haven't read 'The Shanghai Wife' yet, I was utterly enthralled by Luna's story in 'The Brightest Star'. As a fan of historical fiction in general, this book was a page-turning read giving its audience insight into the plight of women in Renaissance Florence - which sadly still echoes in parts of the world today. I was excited to have the chance to speak with Emma in more detail about the book on the podcast a little while ago.

Women In WW2: A Novel Experience with Anna Parker-Naples

As I round up my course at Faber Academy, I've noticed just how much growth I've experienced on my writing journey. I realised the progress I've made in deciding what should go into my book, and the best ways to create my characters in the level of depth that I want for each of them. So in today's episode, I want to share with you an overview of my writing journey so far, and the new ideas I've got while getting to know the characters of my book. What You Will Learn in This Episode: - The excitement I felt behind the concept of creating my draft zero  - Why I made the switch from multiple points to a single point of view - The importance of consistency in keeping the story alive  - My train of thought when inventing a character in the story - The challenges I faced while trying to avoid creating stereotypes  Consistency is one of the important qualities a writer must maintain when creating a book. You need to put in the effort to write as often as possible. Being consistent will help you connect your thoughts easily as you create your story, so your readers can better relate to the characters and get hooked to reading your book.  Resources:  - My website: https://annaparkernaples.co.uk/ (https://annaparkernaples.co.uk/)  - Find my Book 'Get Visible: How to Have More Impact, Influence and Income'  https://www.annaparkernaples.co.uk/book (https://www.annaparkernaples.co.uk/book)  - Find my Book 'Podcast with Impact: How to Launch Your Podcast Properly' https://annaparkernaples.co.uk/book-podcast-with-impact/ (https://annaparkernaples.co.uk/book-podcast-with-impact/) - Find me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annaparkernaples/ (https://www.instagram.com/annaparkernaples/)  - Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AnnaParkerNaplesCoach/ (https://www.facebook.com/AnnaParkerNaplesCoach/)  - LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/annaparkernaples (https://uk.linkedin.com/in/annaparkernaples)

Women In WW2: A Novel Experience with Anna Parker-Naples

While I was preparing to become qualified enough to write a book, I needed to take a course that would improve my storytelling skills. In today's episode, I'm going to talk about the challenges I faced when writing the hardest letter for an application to study a novel-writing course. I'll also be sharing the experience and thoughts I had during that period when I was expecting feedback from the academy. What You Will Learn in This Episode: - The essential keys to focus on when writing a novel - How I overcame the challenges I faced while writing my application for the course - Why I regret not paying attention to my grandmother's experience when she was alive - My reaction to the result of my application and the effects it had on my decision making As I was waiting for feedback from the Faber Academy, I was dealing with self-doubt and not feeling capable enough to go through with the course. It took a lot of courage to overcome my vulnerabilities and accept that I was ready to take a meaningful step in my life. This is why I want to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and believe that anything is possible when you put yourself out there. Vikram Chandra is most famous for writing Sacred Games, which was made into the extremely popular Netflix series of the same name. She has taught Guardian Masterclasses in How to Write for Children and is a consultant editor for The Writers Workshop and The Faber Academy, as well as hosting writing boot camps of her own. Her environmentalism and work with her community were sides of Michelle's work I didn't know so well. Rebecca Thornton's The Exclusives is a debut novel: a thriller about friendship, paranoia, success and secrets set in an all-girls boarding school. This Writing Life didn't need a second invitation to talk to Rebecca at her publishers in central London. ----more----The setting was a glass meeting room, which later inspired a lesson in how Thornton's mind works like her fiction. But after a little to and fro about swearing, we began by discussing the intensity of writing the novel itself. This had something to do with readers' fascination with the possible autobiographical elements of the story: Thornton like her heroines went to an exclusive boarding school. From here we touched upon: how it felt to release the novel out into the world endless re-writes The Exclusives: the summary Faber Academy, Tim Lott, Esther Freud  from romance to psychological thriller 'Female friendships are not always very funny' putting the bored into boarding school school or prison?
