Josh and M return once more to the well that is conspiracy theories in fiction. There are a lot of spoilers to that show you probably watched an episode of. You know the one. It ran, what? A season? You probably only saw it on late night TV. Indeed, it rather annoys me now that M didn't talk at all about the "War of the Worlds" TV series. Not the recent French or BBC one. No, the show which ran at the end of the 90s and the early 80s. It even had TV's "The Highlander" in it. Well, for one season. One inferior season. But it was all about how the world had covered up and forgotten about the invasion as seen in the George Pal film. Because, yes, for some reason they decided to make a spin-off TV series in the late 80s to a mid 50s SF film. It even had one returning cast member in a recurring role. Anyway, it had quite a lot of conspiracy theory in it. It's also one of M's guilty pleasures, so why they didn't mention it I don't know...

It's widely thought that George Pal and Byron Haskin's depiction of the first manned mission to Mars – crucially brought to the screen 6 years before we got off the planet and 14 years before we got to the moon – was a heavy influence on the sci-fi genre and Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey in particular. But is it any good? Find out! The film for this episode was graciously donated by Via Vision, who Imprint label releases amazing special editions of cult classics for collectors to enjoy. In 1898 H.G. Wells imagined a war between the people of Earth advanced invaders from Mars. Since then storytellers have re-envisioned this conflict for their own times. One of these was George Pal, whose 1953 movie became a generation's iconic depiction of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. How does that mid-century version hold up seventy years later?

Dave Strohmaier, Director of Film Restorations for Cinerama, and his collaborator Tom March provide a detailed background on the epic restoration of the 1962 Cinerama classic. And the Warner Archives' George Feltenstein details the history behind the release and the two-disk special edition blu-ray filled with extras. We start with a review of how Dave's interest in restoring the Cinerama films led to his first meetings with Warner Home Video, including George Feltenstein, to discuss “How the West Was Won.” This film was found to be in relatively good shape leading to a fairly easy restoration. The re-release of the restored film was hugely successful in both its Cinerama screenings in 2008 and in the Home Video editions. However, previous reviews of “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” film assets stated that they were so badly damaged that it was basically an “un-restorable” film. But advances in digital film restoration, combined with Dave's work on the technically challenging WINDJAMMER restoration, gave him the confidence to explore the film once again. Starting with meetings in 2018, Dave and George recount the milestones in the collaboration between Cinerama and Warner Bros. And then Dave and Tom explain some of the specific restoration challenges they faced in their epic year-and-a-half spent on the project. To view exclusive images: www.theextras.tv/podcastsTo Purchase on Amazon: https://tinyurl.com/yc7vtvxa
This time, we review and take a look at the forgotten dystopian classic Logan's Run and along the way ask why do dystopian films want to take the fun out of reproduction, why only keep humans alive until 30, and how did this film get lost in the shuffle? Let's dive in… Logan's Run Movie Cast and Crew Directed by Michael Anderson: The English director had previously made the original film adaptation of George Orwell's classic novel 1984 and his film, Around the World in 80 Days, had won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Starring Michael York as Logan 5: He is more popularly known as Basil in the Austin Powers film franchise, but had appeared in the adaptation of the popular musical Cabaret. Richard Jordan as Francis 7: Logan's Run was one of Jordan's first roles, but would appear in Dune and The Hunt for Red October prior to his death in 1993. Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6: This was an early film role for her as well, but has since appeared in An American Werewolf in London and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Farrah Fawcett-Majors as Holly 13: She was on TV during at this time in The Six Million Dollar Man as well as Charlie's Angels and thus, received prominent billing due to her rising stardom at the time. Peter Ustinov as The Old Man: The legendary actor has won two Academy Awards for his roles in Spartacus and Topkapi. Roscoe Lee Browne as Box: While not exactly appearing on-screen in Logan's Run, Browne would later become a very accomplished voice actor; The Real Ghostbusters, Batman: The Animated Series and Spider-Man. From the Page to the Screen Logan's Run is based on a novel of the same name by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson which released in 1967. Almost immediately after the novel's release, it was optioned for a future film adaptation, but it labored in developmental hell for years. The producer who had originally acquired the film rights, George Pal, had differing opinions with his screenwriters in regards as to the tone of the film. The writers originally wanted to incorporate relevant themes at the time of the late 1960's, but Pal wanted a more fun sci-fi romp. These rewrites caused production to be delayed as Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey had revived the science fiction genre among audiences. Pal would later leave the project and fellow producer Saul David stepped in with a new writing team who made significant changes from the novel to the film. For starters, the original age limit was raised from 21 to 30 to allow for a wider range of actors and extras to be involved in the project. The biggest spectacle of the film, the Carrousel, was created specifically for the film and is not a part of the original novel. It was simply a means to create a ceremony of sorts while the original novel simply had people "go to sleep." The backstory of the Cubs is also explained in greater detail and even giving Jessica a friend who is part of the juvenile gang. One of the biggest changes is the idea of Sanctuary. In the film, Sanctuary is not real while in the novel, Sanctuary does exist, but it is located on Mars and requires a rocket ship to reach it. While audiences always expect to see some changes from a film's source material, Logan's Run does a decent job of retaining the major elements of the film, but making it more watchable for a 1970's movie going audience. The Relevancy of Logan's Run At first glance, the film seems like a campy sci-fi romp with cheesy special effects and you'd be sort of correct, but it's also interesting to note several major parallels to today's world. The major element being the reliance of technology in both the film and our world. There's smart homes, magnetic rail cars and a gigantic computer that seems to control every aspect of the mega city. Nearly every home today has some type of smart technology from a refrigerator to a
We debut the Crypt of Creators, by snatching Herbert George right out of his time travelling adventures! We begin by discussing adaptations of two of his most famous works. First up, the Martian invasion is a go! Orson Welles causes a stir and PERHAPS mass hysteria, in his radio adaptation of one of H.G.'s most celebrated pieces of science fiction, when a cylindrical ship crashes in Grovers Mill, New Jersey in 1938. Then, those same troublesome invaders crash-land in small-town California (and all over the world) in the special effects spectacular, The War of the Worlds (1953). Wells himself, then creates his own device to explore the distant future of the year 802,701, in the George Pal produced and directed, The Time Machine (1960). And then from there, we take a little trip with Mr. Wells, as he uses keen detective skills to track down Jack the Ripper, who has used the time machine to escape into modern day 1979, in Time After Time (1979)!
This week Elton gets stuck in his van, Jim gets new shoes, Darren suffers from coconut flour exchange rates, Lee discovers he's the only one alive in Bromley shopping centre and the gravitational pull of bread pudding is discussed... There may also be talk about a bottle of wee disguised as Oasis fruit drink. Then its on to our film this week, the George Pal classic adaptation of HG Well's The Time Machine.
