In this second part of my interview with Susan Merrell, author of Shirley: A Novel, teacher in the MFA in Creative Writing & Literature at the Lichtenstein Center of Stony Brook Southampton, and co-creator, with the novelist Meg Wolitzer, of the BookEnds Fellowship novel revision program, we talk about what I call inner stuff–the thoughts, ideas, and attitudes that affect your work, even if you're not fully conscious of it. We covered: • Really cool, serendipitous story about how she came to write a novel about the iconic American writer, Shirley Jackson • How she deals with her inner Achilles heel: shame • Meditation as the answer to everything • How the need for validation drives many writers to produce more (this was truly fascination and made me think, hmm, maybe I just don't have a drive for validation, and maybe that's not a good thing?) • How teaching students makes her feel ‘'ridiculously happy'' • How the publishing industry doesn't necessarily support the right books Connect with Susan at susanscarfmerrell.com. “I saw someone with my book on holiday. I think we both ended up having a tear because it was just so lovely. That's the goal, to see somebody out there reading your words!” ~Helen McGinn Once an author releases her fourth book in as many years, she learns a thing or two about writing a good novel - reflections become lessons, confidence builds and goals become clearer. Helen McGinn is an award-winning wine expert and author. The Knackered Mother's Wine Guide is her first book, but her foray into fiction began during lockdown. In the early days of Behind The Spine we spoke to her about the launch of ‘This Changes Everything', and since then she's released another three books, with a fifth on the way. So what can we take away from the experiences of someone who's managed to release a book a year while maintaining a high quality in her work? Helen shares the secrets of her success and how she juggles a busy work and personal life with writing. She explores lessons learnt along the way - like how she digs herself out of a writing rut. And there's plenty of chat about wine too, of course. In this episode you will learn: Why taking time off to write might not be as effective as you'd think. To pay attention to your descriptions - without overdoing it. How to bring your passions to your writing. Find out more about Helen here. Your host is inkjockey founder Mark Heywood. Morris Brown is a director, composer, graphic designer, technical trainer, instructional designer, accomplished artist, revered UCLA educator, and author of the “Hang'n with the Girl's” book series. Today, Morris Brown shares his journey from being a college football star to becoming a prolific writer and a loving "girl dad." He discusses the profound influence his father had on him, teaching him the importance of kindness and resilience in the face of adversity. Morris's calm demeanor and thoughtful approach to life are evident as he recounts his experiences and the lessons he's learned along the way. Morris talks about his unique approach to parenting, which includes writing 21 books inspired by his adventures with his daughters. He explains how the COVID-19 pandemic provided him the opportunity to finally put pen to paper and document the cherished moments he shared with his girls. His books, which started as an 800-page manuscript, were eventually divided into 11 smaller, more manageable volumes, with 10 more in the works. These stories not only serve as a gift to his daughters but also as an inspiration to other parents. The conversation also delves into Morris Brown's diverse background, including his time as a college professor, a television director, and a composer. He shares anecdotes from his life, such as his near-miss with an NFL career and his unexpected friendship with a homeless man who attacked his car. Caroline Dunford has published over 30 books across many genres. Her best loved is the 'Euphemia Martins' Mysteries', which solves crimes set one hundred years ago. Her latest release is 'The Augmentors', a Young Adult novel published under the name Gemini Gibson. We get quite philosophical, talking about the big picture of writing, and why she feels the need to carry on. She has a story-telling infection, and has published many books, even though she's never got down that 'perfect' novel which sells millions upon millions. We discuss why sometimes she writes under contract, and other times there are stories that have be written regardless, and how she structures a year around that. You can hear how plot development changes in a series of books, how she figures out the tone of a book as she flits between genre, and how she decides what book comes next. This week's episode is sponsored by 'Who is the Cheese Wire Killer?', a true-crime podcast available wherever you get your shows.Support the podcast at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. The best book Libbie Grant has ever written, her masterpiece, has not had the reception it deserves, and I'm calling all you listeners to give it it's time to shine. Grab it here.Several times a year––okay, it's a bit more common for me––I meet someone who opens a whole new corner of the universe to my imagination and longing. That is exactly how I felt, talking to Libbie Grant.Libbie writes under four pseudonyms, and all of her books publish with one of the Big 5 publishers. She writes so fast, so efficiently, with such keen focus, she can put out…well, we didn't actually pin down an exact number of books-per-year, but I got the sense six books a year would be no problem for Libbie. And so I asked myself, why have I done everything wrong in my life?Libbie's perspective of writing more books because writing is what she loves to do and knowing that the books pay her bills…shouldn't that be obvious.Except, I don't know about you, dear reader/listener, but I have gone off track trying to create a marketing kingdom with fewer books to market than I would've expected for myself. And so it's a nice wakeup call to remember what's at the fleshy beating heart of this human machine full of desires, hopes, and dreams. And on that note buy Libbie's books here.Buy my ebook at the lowest price here, or for a higher price here. And I've got the paperback available for the first time ever, right here.Ain't it pretty‽And check out Libbie's podcast, FUTURE SAINT OF A NEW ERA, here. This is a public episode. Dr. Gerard Verschuuren has published a new book: Faith That Makes You Think. In this book, he demonstrates that faith relies on, rather than contradicts, thinking. The Catholic Church, in fact, teaches that there is a strong relationship between faith and reason. St. Augustine could not have said it more clearly when he wrote, “Believers are also thinkers: in believing, they think and in thinking, they believe.… If faith does not think, it is nothing.” This goes against the slogan “Don't think, just believe,” which gives atheists a powerful weapon to say the opposite: “Don't believe, just think.” That would give atheists full reign, which they certainly don't deserve as the book explains. Faith That Makes You Think is specifically written for Catholics—fallen-away Catholics, lukewarm Catholics, struggling Catholics, would-be Catholics—for all those in search of the truth, as it gives life-saving answers to life-size questions. But this episode of DIG LIFE DEEP! will appeal to a broad audience, people of faith and no faith and of course, Catholic, devout or fallen-away. The book received many accolades. In this 150th episode PsychSessions, Eric interviews Wayne Weiten from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in Las Vegas, NV. Wayne reveals that he retired from teaching in December 2021, although he still plans to be a very active textbook author. He shares his professional background and the very different institutions he served over his career, including UNLV where he truly enjoyed teaching graduate students how to teach psychology. We discover that Wayne has a 'go it alone' perspective throughout much of his education and career, and he clearly thrives. He tells his story of his early/young college teaching start, the substantial influence of MACTOP, his interest in introductory psychology and the corresponding research program, and more. Self-confidence helped Wayne write two very successful textbooks, and that success eventually has meaningful benefits for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP). Wayne's deep knowledge of introductory psychology trends and the history of textbooks in this realm continues to be impressive to this day, and it's clear in Wayne's stories that he's deeply appreciative of those around him who have both collaborated and facilitated his success.

In her celebrated 1999 essay collection "Remembered Rapture" — about the life and craft of a writer — feminist author and educator bell hooks insisted that "[n]o Black woman writer in this culture can write ‘too much'. Indeed, no woman writer can write ‘too much'.... No woman has ever written enough.” hooks, who passed away Wednesday at age 69, published more than 30 books, including the noted works “Ain't I A Woman?”, “All About Love,” “Sisters of the Yam” and “Teaching to Transgress.” Her writing was foundational in shaping Black feminist thought and widening the feminist worldview beyond white, middle class identity. From her pointed critiques of the “imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarch” to her poignant thoughts on love and healing, we'll reflect on hooks' life and work.

JAMES W. FERGUSON, J.D., M.A. James Ferguson has served as an advisor to executives and achievers in the sports, music, and telecommunications industries, to pastors and to public servants for more than twenty years. He is a prolific writer and ghostwriter. One of his daily goals is to develop leaders of leaders and leaders of organizations. In collaborating with church leaders, his focus is on growing and maturing the body of Christ. James often laughs when others look at his background and see a logical planned progression from one success to the next. “I've made enough mistakes along the way, for me and for a lot of others. And there have been as many deep valleys as there have been peaks. I don't wish the valleys on anybody. Although, for me, the valleys played an important role in my maturation process, in normalizing the fundamentals of success, in understanding the importance of pouring into others, and my reliance on God. More importantly, the grace of God has used each step, and placed special people along my path. Each of these have helped me to grow, to develop a commitment to continuous learning, and a commitment to developing others.” When asked about whether there was any one thing that he believe makes the difference in our growth as Christians, James said: “Understanding that it is not about our perfection. It is about recognition and reliance on His perfection.” James Ferguson has a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law, and a M.A. in Executive Leadership from Liberty University, School of Business. James describes himself as a child of God, a developer of people, and a Native New Yorker. He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area. He will focus on St. Alphonsus as a Prolific Writer and Thinker. Fr Wales was born the very year the Redemptorists arrived in Bangalore - 1940! “I get paid (and paid well) to go into a situation, usually alone and usually outnumbered by sixty or more criminals, and maintain order. I prevent them from preying on each other or attacking officers. That's the job. Now, since I don't fight every day or even every week (anymore — I'm a sergeant now, one step behind the front line) most of the minutes and hour of the day are pretty easy, far too easy for what they are paying me. But every once in a while on a really, really ugly night, I more than earn my keep.” — Rory Miller (Meditations on Violence) To most of us, that may sound like a crime novel — but for Rory Miller, that was his day job for seventeen years. Rory Miller is a prolific writer in martial arts and violence. He's been training in the martial arts since '81 and he's been a corrections officer (with many of his years in maximum security) since '91. He has a B.S. degree in Experimental Psychology from Oregon State. In the martial arts, he's tried everything from judo to fencing, karate, and taekwondo — he has even studied some European weapons. He's a member of the corrections team SERT — a corrections emergency response team. In this episode, Rory Miller talks about his background and experience in the martial arts, how he became a corrections officer, how he came about training people on violence and the mentality of violence, life after working in a jail for 17 years, where he would like to see martial arts headed in the future, and his future writing projects.
