Part two of the secret world of song camps looks at the different roles in a songwriting session. There are producers who sit behind a console desk or computer and record, arrange and craft the instrumental and track the vocal. Often they double as engineers who use their technical knowledge to select mics, set up signal chains, and ensure the best recording. Then there is the topliner, a singer who generates melodies on the fly, throwing ideas at the instrumental, looking for the best hooks. Often the top liner is also a songwriter who crafts chords and lyrics to fit the topline melody. And then there is of course the artist who performs the piece.  These roles aren't always clearly divided - most musicians have multiple skills. But for the sake of understanding how each role is essential to creating a song, we asked four musical luminaries to embody one of these roles and break it down: producer/engineer Alex Tumay, topliner Wolftyla, Songwriter and Walk the Moon frontman Nicholas Petricca and Artist Grace VanderWall. This conversation happened live at the College of Performing Arts at The New School as part of Anti Social Camp 2023, the largest song camp in the world that is working to revive to the NYC songwriting scene.  Learn more about your ad choices. Whoo boy - we hope that there aren't any big fans of Stargirl because we are not fans of either text.Brenna at least appreciates the (unsuccessful) attempt by Spinelli to unpack the cost of being a manic pixie dream person. Joe, on the other hand, is frustrated by the simplicity and obviousness of the book's message and both of us think Leo is a garbage protagonist. The film has its own share of problems: namely a lack of conflict, characters, lazy inclusion of POC secondary and queer characters. It also appears to be an extended music video for former America's Got Talent contestant Grace VanderWaal. In short: this is an angry episode, folks!Wanna connect with the show? MOVIE DISCUSSION: Earlier in 2020, Disney Plus gained a new PG-Rated addition in Stargirl, the film adaption of Jerry Spinelli’s much-loved 2000 young-adult fiction novel of the same name. Having found a copy of novel at a used book store, I figured I’d read it, text my sister about doing the same, and the two of us could take some time to chat about the film adaption, as well as the book, here on the podcast. So, as we get things underway, we contextualize our experience with the film adaption of Stargirl by talking briefly about the book. Afterward, we dive headfirst into talking about the movie and - while we try to keep our book-to-film comparisons light - most readers will sympathize with our experience that, sometimes, the book really is better. However, we do spend some time talking about how both the film adaption and the source material stay largely true to the same theme, that sometimes you have to make a decision: In your actions, whose affection are you seeking, and which do you value more? Afterward, knowing that’s the theme of the story, we easily head into a biblical discussion about the affections we as Christians have for Christ, how those affections may divide our relationships with others, and what makes Christ worth it. Stargirl is Rated PG for mild thematic elements. Grace Vanderwaal is the studio for the third episode of Hollywire's BEHIND THE FAME Podcast. Since winning America's Got Talent at the young age of 12, Grace's career and music has become a trending topic ever since. Tony Moras and Jana Rosenberg talk the now 15-year-old artist about how far she and her music have come in such a short amount of time. We talk about the music industry, her life in New York, artist collaborations, and of course Grace's fans and fame. Grace just put out a new single, "Ur So Beautiful", which can be heard on all streaming platforms now. Her next tour kicks off on August 22nd here in Los Angeles and you better believe Hollywire will be there to cheer her on.  American singer-songwriter Grace Vanderwaal became a household name when she famously won season 11 of NBC’s "America’s Got Talent". She is best known for her ukulele playing and distinctive vocals. Grace had her first concert tour in 2017 and went on to win the Radio Disney Music Award for Best New Artist. She also won a Teen Choice Award that same year. In 2018, Grace joined Imagine Dragons on their Evolve World Tour. Grace’s most recent work, however, is for Disney’s film Stargirl - a movie in which Grace plays the lead role. For three consecutive years now, Billboard includes Grace in their magazines 21 Under 21 list. She is also the youngest person to be included in Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Music list.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We interview Will Jay, an extraordinary singer & songwriter from Los Angeles! As a solo artist, his songs have been streamed over 20 million times, offering a unique perspective on young adulthood while challenging society’s expectations of living in the digital age. Will Jay has also sung back up for artists such as Linkin Park and Josh Groban, while writing for artists like Grace Vanderwaal, NCT-127, Asher Angel, etc.! We learn about his musical journey having started professionally as a young teenager in a boy band and the transition to a solo career. We explore the recent creative risks he’s taken very recently and the unexpected responses he’s received in writing the hyperpersonal & powerful songs “By Now” (a song about the many sacrifices and struggles in pursuing a dream ) and “I Can Only Write My Name” (a song to remind us that it’s never too late to learn and be proud of your culture)!

And The Writer Is...with Ross Golan

He is a Grammy award winning record producer, songwriter, musician, and mixer based in Los Angeles. With over 120 million units sold, few producers in music can rival his pedigree and resume. His credits include Adele, Twenty One Pilots, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Pharrell Williams, Grace VanderWaal, The All-American Rejects, Timbaland, OneRepublic, MIKA, Deftones, and Keith Urban among others. Most recently, he produced and mixed the 2x multi-platinum ‘The Greatest Showman: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack’, which held the #1 spot on the Billboard Top Albums chart for three consecutive weeks. As a fluent guitarist, bassist, drummer, and keyboard player, he has mastered the balance between being hands-on and drawing out an artist’s own sound regardless of genre. For this creative, the goal is to shine the best light on the artist and help them be as true to themselves as possible. It is this diversity, versatility, and musical fluency that continues to make him one of the most talented and sought-after producers, songwriters, and musicians in the industry. And The Writer Is… Greg Wells! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kelly Good studied at both the University of Michigan and Oakland University graduating in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Integrated Studies in Music, Dance and Theatre with an emphasis on Health and Wellness.  In 2009 Kelly moved from her hometown outside of Flint, Michigan to the windy city of Chicago, Illinois in pursuit of a career in the performing arts. After appearing in several local Chicago area theatre productions including Phantom of the Opera, Kelly shifted her focus to continue to teach performing arts as she did while attending college.   She then decided to try her hand at natural fitness competitions while also earning NASM & AFAA group fitness and personal training instruction certifications.  Kelly quickly became a top performing instructor for popular a local Chicago gym for women, Flirty Girl Fitness, and simultaneously worked her way up the ranks to become a World Champion Pro Fitness Model.  In June 2017, Kelly required a bilateral foot surgery to correct genetic issues which were exacerbated by overuse in ballet and a fitness career. With both of her feet being surgically broken and corrected, Kelly was left with a painful restrictive 2 month recovery just to get back on her feet and walking again.  Despite this major setback she would still go on to be crowned the 2017 World Champion Pro Fitness Model with Ultimate Fitness Events (UFE) while competing against the top natural fitness competitors from around the world and was also awarded the first Miss Congeniality title by a popular vote among her fellow female athletes. Kelly now also conducts private performing arts lessons for voice, acting and dance in addition to coaching clients in fitness, nutrition, posing, and stage presence.  Kelly strives to help other athletes who enjoy the competitive fitness sport develop their strategies and has already assisted several others on their journey to achieving their pro status as well.  She has found that there is a need within the competitive fitness sport to develop the performing arts aspect which involves helping competitors pose in ways that display and compliment the hard work they have put into sculpting their individual physiques. Kelly has had numerous success stories in each area of her studies. Kelly’s lyrical opera student, Laura Bretan, was a Golden buzzer winner on America’s Got Talent in 2016. Laura started training with Kelly at the age of 8 years old, and worked with Kelly for two years prior to attending the show. Laura first won Romania’s Got Talent and then finished as a runner up for the grand prize on America’s Got Talent against Grace VanderWaal.  Kelly has overcome many personal struggles to which she feels has helped her overall success including an eating disorder, depression and a self-harm illness. She now works with other young women struggling through similar disorders, helping them better understand how to cope with these conditions, working on their relationship with food and improving their self-image. Kelly aims to continually educate herself and is an avid self-improvement buff.  She enjoys being able to actively teach others how to enjoy living in their own skin while working towards their goals in all areas of life all the while learning to love themselves unconditionally along the way! In this week's episode... How to pull yourself out of challenging situations How to learn to love yourself How Kelly came back from bilateral foot surgery to become a world champion How Kelly overcame being raped and left for dead on the road How to integrate the mind, body and soul to be successful  CONNECT WITH KELLY: INSTAGRAM: @kelly_s_good FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/kelly.s.good.9 https://www.kellygoodstudio.com/
