The impact of The Dirty Dozen on the decade cannot be overstated – here was a big-budget, Hollywood star-powered blockbuster, about a popular topic, that simply didn't hold back. Toss on the fact that there was no rating system at the time, it's very likely Little Timmy didn't know what he was getting into when he decided to go see that new World War II movie. With a few well placed curse words and a few dozen dead Nazis, director Robert Aldrich ushered a whole new era of screen violence into the American consciousness. In this episode, Bart and Jenna discuss the legacy of The Dirty Dozen by going straight to the immediate rip-offs that followed in its wake. There's at least two surprisingly underseen gems in the bunch, as well as one other massive hit, all of which bring up the body count even as some question their own morality. Finally, some war movies even Bart can enjoy! The following films are discussed:• The Dirty Dozen (1967) Directed by Robert Aldrich Starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson• Dark of the Sun (1968) Directed by Jack Cardiff Starring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Brown• The Devil's Brigade (1968) Directed by Andrew V. McLaglen Starring William Holden, Cliff Robertson, Vince Edwards• Play Dirty (1969) Directed by André De Toth Starring Michael Caine, Nigel Davenport, Nigel Green• The Wild Bunch (1969) Directed by Sam Peckinpah Starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan• Battle of the Commandos (1969) La legione dei dannati Directed by Umberto Lenzi Starring Jack Palance, Thomas Hunter, Curd Jurgens

Academy Award & Golden Globe winner, George Chakiris, is perhaps best known internationally for his role of Bernardo in West Side Story. In Nov of 2012, Chakiris received what many refer to as the highest honor in Hollywood - His Hand & Foot Prints were placed in cement for all history in connection with the 50th anniversary of classic film West Side Story which premiered at Grauman's over 50 years ago. George Chakiris was born in Norwood, Ohio. He is the son of Steven and Zoe Chakiris. They were immigrants from Greece. A graduate of the American School of Dance, Chakiris recalls the early days of passing the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, "where the worlds most glamorous people were seen," never thinking that one day he would be attending his own premiere for "Westside Story" (For which he received a Golden Globe and an Academy Award) and eventually, in Dec, 2011, would have his hand and foot prints placed in the famous forecourt, among those whom he had idolized. In 1947, Chakiris made his film debut in the chorus of Song of Love. Later he appeared in several small roles, usually as a dancer or a member of the chorus in various musical films. He was one of the dancers in Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" number in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes released in 1953. He again appeared as a dancer alongside Rosemary Clooney in "White Christmas" in "Love, You Didn't Do Right by Me." In 1961, George's biggest success came with the film West Side Story, for which he won the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo, leader of the Sharks. He had also appeared as Riff, leader of the Jets, in the West End in London. He starred as a doctor in the film Diamond Head released in 1963, opposite Charlton Heston and Yvette Mimieux, and in 1967, he appeared alongside Gene Kelly in Jacques Demy's French musical Les Demoiselles de Rochefort. Besides films, Chakiris performed on Broadway and for television. In the early 1960s, he embarked on a career as a pop singer, resulting in a couple of minor hit songs. In 1960, he recorded one single with noted producer Joe Meek. George worked more in television in the 1970s and 1980s, appearing on such shows as Wonder Woman, Medical Center, Hawaii Five-O, Dallas, Murder, She Wrote and the TV daytime drama Santa Barbara In Superboy, he appeared as Professor Peterson during the series first two seasons from 1988-1990. Chakiris's last role to date was in a 1996 episode of the sitcom Last of the Summer Wine. FROM THE SILVER SCREEN TO STERLING SILVER - George Chakiris, parlayed his talent from the Silver Screen to Sterling Silver Jewelry, featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, dramatic belts and more. Many of his designs have been inspired by colleagues such as Marilyn Monroe and Rosemarie Clooney, whom he had the privelege of dancing with, in "Gentlemen Prefer Blonds" and "White Christmas" respectfully. Living a life with passion for the creative arts drew George quite by chance to jewelry making as a hobby. What began as a diversion became a full time appreciation for design and construction and a new creative outlet, which became The George Chakiris Collections. Chakiris recently unveiled his latest collection in Japan. The George Chakiris collections are now on display at Tokyo's prestigious Mitsukoshi Department Store as well as in America online at his georgechakiris.com. Among those artists seen on red carpets and national interviews such as The Today Show and CNN wearing George's accessory creations are Morgan Fairchild, Rita Moreno, Tippi Hedren, Loni Anderson, Carol Channing, Donna Mills, Romi Dames, Phyllis Diller, Alison Arngrim, Mary McDonough, Michael Learned and Judy Norton.

This week we continue a series of Abominable Snowman movies with Snowbeast (1977). This is Episode #355! Snowbeast is a 1977 American made-for-television horror film starring Bo Svenson, Yvette Mimieux, Robert Logan and Clint Walker. It was directed by Herb Wallerstein from a teleplay written by Joseph Stefano (who wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 thriller Psycho). The film originally premiered as the NBC Thursday Night Movie on NBC on April 28, 1977. This was the #1-rated television program in the USA the week of its release.
Third time is the charm! Twice scheduled to grace my living room pre-pandemic, what a Thanksgiving gift Academy Award and Golden Globe Winner, George Chakiris is. Perfectly timed. Ridiculously easy on the eyes, he defies the passage of time and is as gracefully humble in word and deed as he is gliding across a dance floor, or the streets of the barrio, as the case may be. Forever, Bernardo, we dove into a multitude of his other films, from his first, singing with a boys choir opposite Katherine Hepburn in Song of Love, to background dancer alongside Marilyn Monroe, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosalind Russell, and Cyd Charisse, to name but a few. Taking his first dance class at 19, he did over a dozen films almost immediately, and went from gypsy to starring in the London production of West Side Story, as… wait for it, Riff. George had not only never acted, he'd nary taken an acting class, and yet in short shrift, he was earning an Oscar, as Bernardo opposite Rita Moreno, in the winningest musical of all time, besting Montgomery Clift, Peter Falk, George C Scott, and Jackie Gleason. A multitude of dramatic films followed, starring opposite Yul Brenner, Charlton Heston, Gene Kelly, Richard Widmark, and Yvette Mimieux, which names but a few. Fabulous stories about fabulous women, Judy Garland (genuis), Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlene Dietrich, Shirley Jones, Natalie Wood, Elaine Stritch, and a great one about Elvis. As taken with all of the above as I think we'd be, George's refreshing humility is a gentle kiss to Hollywood glitz and glamour. Speaking of glitz, George parlayed his talent from the silver screen to sterling silver Jewelry, featuring necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more. BLING! I was shocked to discover he not only designes the gorgeous pieces, he silversmiths them into reality. Perfect holiday gifts for that very special someone. You? I've got my eye on one or two. georgechakiris.com I'm currently devouring George's memoir, My West Side Story, with story upon story of the movie and all that is George Chakiris's delicious life. https://amzn.to/30OeD36 These have been challenging days. Spending time with gorgeous George fills my gratitude jar to the rim. Just in time. Happy Thanksgiving. Please pardon the sound at the top of the show. Tech issues glitched the glitz. We got into a real battle over this one. Be careful. It'll suck you in. Disney ramps up the risqué with its first movie to merit a PG rating, as we continue our exploration of science fiction by going where almost no one has ever gone before: a critical examination of The Black Hole. Starring Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowall, Slim Pickens, and Tom McLoughlin.
Once again, we relinquish control of our picks to the distinguished tastes of our Dom DeLuise Patreon donors. This week they give a real mixed bag of notorious films.Up first, Disney assembles an all-star cast (Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine) and a hefty budget to try and get in on the Star Wars craze of the late 70's with The Black Hole from 1979 but ended up with an under-performing dud but which still has cult fans to this day.Next, did you know Jim Varney's first movie wasn't an Ernest movie? Well, it kind of was. It has Ernest in it, but only briefly. It's mostly about this other character, Dr. Otto (also played by Varney) who wants to wreak havoc on the world by destroying our financial institutions, starting with Cincinnati! It's called Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam from 1985 and it plays kind of like an Ernest movie, but weirder. Much weirder. And finally, we take a look at the infamous Tiptoes from 2003 in which Gary Oldman plays Matthew McConaughey's twin brother. Who is also a dwarf. The movie is often cited online as one of the worst/weirdest movies ever but is it really that weird?! We'll find out. All this plus Kevin's trip to Boston, grandpa movie talk, Wal-Mart Exclusives, Nick Nolte chat, the hottest blu-rays of the week and so much more.LISTEN NOW: MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. We continue Mercenary Month with a classic, 'Dark of the Sun'. Jack Cardiff's 1968 action movie that follows a band of Congolese commandos attempting to retrieve a huge diamond haul before the Simbas arrive. An artistic but visceral film staring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux, Jim Brown, Peter Carsten and Kenneth More. Skilfully shot, lots of impressive action and some good performances combine to create a compelling film. Don't forget to leave a comment/review/rating and let us know what you thought of the film via twitter @FightingOnFilm
Book: The Time Machine by H G Wells Film: The Time Machine (1960) Published in 1895, the science fiction novella would popularize time travel using a device or a contraption. The story shares Wells socialist political views, his views on life and abundance and contemporary angst against industrial relations. The 1960’s George Pal MGM film, starring Rod Taylor, Yvette Mimieux and Alan Young would use stop motion animation to help flourish the story. The film was a box office success. Pal wanted to film in London but to budgetary reasons had to settle for Culver City in California. Interesting fact, George Pal was going to film a sequel but unfortunately, he died before production. We debut the Crypt of Creators, by snatching Herbert George right out of his time travelling adventures! We begin by discussing adaptations of two of his most famous works. First up, the Martian invasion is a go! Orson Welles causes a stir and PERHAPS mass hysteria, in his radio adaptation of one of H.G.'s most celebrated pieces of science fiction, when a cylindrical ship crashes in Grovers Mill, New Jersey in 1938. Then, those same troublesome invaders crash-land in small-town California (and all over the world) in the special effects spectacular, The War of the Worlds (1953). Wells himself, then creates his own device to explore the distant future of the year 802,701, in the George Pal produced and directed, The Time Machine (1960). And then from there, we take a little trip with Mr. Wells, as he uses keen detective skills to track down Jack the Ripper, who has used the time machine to escape into modern day 1979, in Time After Time (1979)!
Based on H.G. Wells' story, "The Time Machine" from 1960 is a first rate science fiction movie. Director George Pal is a master of creating films that nourish the imagination. Arnold Leibovit's documentary The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal captures the innovative talent of the Academy Award winning Mr. Pal.H. George Wells played by Rod Taylor has constructed a beautiful time machine and is prepared to travel into the future. George is tired of the present time and wants to use the fourth dimension to pursue what he hopes is a better future. The film's time machine is a classic movie property. George does travel ahead eventually to October 12, 802,701 where he encounters the Eloi and then the Morlocks. He further learns of past world wars that have led to their current condition. Cast members Alan Young as best friend Filby, Yvette Mimieux as the beautiful Eloi-Weena, Sabastian Cabot as Dr. Philip Hillyer and others make this a timeless adventure that we love. Here’s the IMDB page for “The Time Machine”Up next is “Holiday Affair” And after that, “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House”

Welcome to Chris & Chris Talk Movies. In this podcast, life-long friends Chris Ferry and Chris Huddleston discuss Sci Fi movies (sometimes the best Sci Fi movies, sometimes not), horror movies (occasionally some of the all time best horror movies…often…not), a few of the very best action movies (I think you see where we're going with this), and genre films from their childhood and beyond in this laid-back, rambling, but inviting series!Rated PG for occasional mature language and alcohol consumption. For this week's episode, we venture way back into our childhoods for the Disney sci-fi flick "The Black Hole". The Black Hole movie was released in 1979, and was Disney's attempt to capitalize on the runaway success of Star Wars. The cast includes Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowall, and Slim Pickens. Will this live up to our fond memories, or will we forever destroy our childhoods? You'll have to listen to find out!Email your questions, comments, or concerns to chrisandchristalkmovies@gmail.com

In a very special episode, Robert Sallin, the Producer of ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’ returns to the podcast to share more of the untold inside story of producing the most celebrated and iconic Star Trek film ever made. Bob also tells us about the difficulties directing his first feature film, 1969’s ‘The Picasso Summer’ starring Albert Finney and Yvette Mimieux and achieving the incredible feat of helming over 2,000 commercials featuring such stars as Tom Selleck, Jack Lemmon, Joan Rivers, James Mason and Larry Hagman. We’re also lucky enough to be joined by his Wife, Sandra Sallin, who chimes in with the amazing story of attending the after party to a private screening of ‘E.T.’ with Steven Speilberg and George Lucas. If you haven’t heard it, we strongly recommended listening to our first episode with Bob, Supplemental 4: Interview with Robert Sallin, published on September 21st 2017 still available on our feed as well for even more great in-depth anecdotes from the man himself. I had so much fun talking to David and Tom. They were absolutely adorable. They were a couple teenagers from the midwest that saw the film "Thats Entertainment" and they became fans of all things classic Hollywood. They decided to write the classic stars for interviews. Much to their delight they heard back from Fred Astaire and an interview was set up. They were 18 years old and fresh out of high school. They had to get the money together to fly to L.A.. They got the tickets and decked out in their new suits they were off. They were too young to drive in CA. so they found a cheapo motel that was close enough to Freds to walk and boom, there they were with their idol Fred. Fred was kind, charming, funny and they loved him. Fred opened the doors for talking to other greats"Fred talked to you, I guess its OK." They have wonderful stories on Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen and his then wife Yvette Mimieux, Gregory Peck (swoon), Tippi Hedren, Tan Man George Hamilton, Charlton Heston, Angie Dickinson, Lucille Ball, Andre Previn, Jimmy Cagney, Mickey Rooney, a Hilarios story about lunch with Virginia Mayo and a three hour talk with RJ, alias Robert Wagner. He dished and dished. I'm sure they didn't tell me everything. There are so many interviews we did not get to, like fifty. The book is a joy to read. You will love David and Tom. They also did the last interviews of Stanley Donen, Andre Previn and Mike Connors. I highly recommend the book. It's a must read for classic movie fans. Thanks so much for Dave and Tom for coming on the show. PS Tom, you don't look like Art Carney..Mostly thanks to the listeners. In this week's episode, Elise Moore and David Fiore journey back to genre basics with a pair of O.G. time machine movies - both of which feature the orginal time machine itself. We're speaking, of course, of H.G. Wells' eponymous chrono contraption from the great science fictioneer's 1895 novel. We begin with George Pal's 1960 adaptation of The Time Machine, starring Rod Taylor, Alan ("Uncle Scrooge") Young, Tom ("Gavin Elster") Helmore, and Yvette Mimieux. From there, we jostle around through the ages until we get back to H.G.'s basement for the beginning of Nicholas Meyer's Time After Time(1979). This one stars sweethearts Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen, along with David Warner and some delicious pomme frites. One of the great things about our topic is that pretty much everything happens in time, and that's what we'll be discussing during the weeks to come. Everything. In this case, we do a fair bit of speculating about the possibility of human progress and the unfortunate ubiquity of the serial killer narrative. Please don't hesitate to contact us, either at anotherkindofdistance@gmail.com, on our Facebook Page, our Twitter account (@TimeTravelFilms), or David's Tumblr (where you'll find a bunch of images). We're now on all of the podcast delivery services, including iTunes and Stitcher, so please rate/review us there, if you can!
