“It wasn't about being better than others, it was being ourselves, and true to our ideals in our work.” That's just one of many gems from today's guest, Birch Coffee co-founder Paul Schlader, who says, “I don't accept anything less than absolute excellence.” In this conversation we talk about how he stands out in the New York City noise by hiring for kindness; getting bought out when the Gershwin Hotel closed and thereby ending the lease on their first location, then parlaying those funds into two new stores (and the growing pains that followed); and the moment he had to tell his entire team they were furloughed indefinitely when New York City delivered the shut-down order; losing four stores but bouncing back to 14 (when so many other coffee shops closed down). More About Paul: Paul Schlader co-founded Birch Coffee, a New York City-based coffee company, in 2009. Since then, the company has grown to fourteen locations and is doing 10x the revenue by the end of year three. Paul and his business partner Jeremy have been focused on bettering the industry through their work in coffee and service over the past fifteen years. Paul's work directly focuses on quality of product. As a licensed Q grader, he manages all of Birch's green coffee purchases, and oversees their roasting, wholesale program, and espresso training. Though the coffee side is important, leadership is where Paul spends most of his time, building teams and working to teach their leaders to follow the mission, "Serve our customers every need, every time, knowing every moment counts.”

Many professionals realize that a published book is a great business card – but is anyone actually reading it?  Does your book have an impact? Today, we discuss the journey of publishing, marketing, and building a full business model from a book. To share their insights on that topic, we've invited two great guests that have the publishing process down pat. Rita Gunther McGrath is a highly regarded speaker, professor at Columbia Business School, and the author of multiple best-selling books such as Seeing Around Corners: How to Spot Inflection Points in Business Before They Happen. A.J. Jacobs is a journalist, TED Speaker, and seven-time author including the best-selling book Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey. Our conversation starts by discussing the business side of publishing. Our best-selling authors clarify the focus of their recent work, and discuss the various purposes that a published book can serve. While creating a "book-sized" calling card will put you ahead of some, your content still needs to be more than a glorified article if you want people to read it and take action based on your insights. Many first-time authors believe that once the book is written, the job of marketing will fall to the publisher. That's no longer the truth! Nowadays, publishers have stepped back from marketing - leaving the author to get the word out themselves. Rita shares how she plans the marketing of a book before any real writing even begins, while A.J. seeks innovative and creative ways to slice the topics of his books into as many sectors as possible, in order to earn a larger audience. The final leg of our conversation involves taking the information from the page and turning it into teachable content. Our guests share their strategies for turning thought leadership insights into lessons, creating systems and capabilities for instruction that can be brought into an organization in order to create measurable impact. Three Key Takeaways: * When writing a book, ensure your content is bigger than a simple article could contain. * Consider the method of publishing and marketing for your book before you start writing. * Publishers no longer promote books. As the author, you'll need to build a platform to reach the audience by yourself.

Master of immersion journalism, A.J. Jacobs, joins Mark on the podcast today. Through his work, A.J. has immersed himself in topics ranging from the Bible to the family, to his most recent topic, gratitude, which he recounts in his book, ‘Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey’. He is also the author of a book about one of Mark’s heroes, Elvis Presley, and all told, he has written four New York Times bestsellers that, in his words, ‘combine memoir, science, humor and a dash of self-help’. The passage he has chosen to discuss with Mark is Psalms 35:18.   A.J. begins by summarizing the passage, and sharing its importance for him based upon the theme of gratitude within it. He and Mark then go on to explore the nature of gratitude and especially A.J.’s experiences while immersing himself in it for his book. Along the way they touch upon the basis of cognitive behavioral psychology, the key to happiness, A.J.’s grandfather, and the effects of gratitude. They also look at ways to build gratitude into our days, and how we can improve our lives in the process. A.J. draws the episode to a close by offering a glimpse into his next book, and, as is tradition, the lessons about humankind that he has learned. Having taken the time to fully commit himself to the power of gratitude, A.J. Jacobs is, as you will hear, uniquely qualified to analyze this inspirational passage, and provide first hand accounts of its valuable lessons being brought to life in our world today.   Episode Highlights:   ·   A.J.’s summary of the passage and its importance for him ·   Prayers of gratitude ·   The basis of cognitive behavioral psychology ·   The key to happiness ·   A.J.’s grandfather ·   Some of A.J.’s experiences while writing ‘Thanks a Thousand’ ·   Gratitude and happiness ·   How gratitude changes people ·   Noticing, being mindful, slowing down and savoring ·   Changing routines ·   Slowing down time ·   A.J.’s next book ·   How we can improve our lives through the lens of gratitude ·   The lessons about humankind that A.J. has learned   Quotes:   “I’m kind of obsessed with gratitude.”   “We acknowledge the existence of gratitude even before we acknowledge the existence of ourselves.”   “The word Judaism comes from ‘Judah’, the word for thanks, for gratitude.”   “There’s a prayer of gratitude for everything.”   “There is a prayer of thanksgiving for gratitude about gratitude, it’s very meta. A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach

AJ Jacobs recently released a book called Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey where he chronicles his journey of individually thanking all the people responsible for his coffee in the morning. This includes the factory worker than ensures health safety measures. This includes the workers where the coffee beans originated from. It even includes the person who painted the lines on the road so that the truck driver who then transports the coffee had a proper road to drive on. If you really think about it, that's a lot of people that are responsible for his coffee (and yours). The process really made him appreciate life more and solidified for me (Phil Svitek) a notion that Tony Robbins and many other thought leaders have preached, which is become more grateful in your life. Doing so will bring you appreciation and joy towards life like nothing else. Especially in today's day and age, we may feel disconnected from other people whether by physical distances or by differing thoughts. But when you start applying the type of thinking that I explore in this quick lesson, you'll start to realize how interconnected we all really are. It will give you a sense of pride, passion and encouragement. I highlight key takeaways I learned from the book and why it's imperative that creatives embrace a life of gratitude in order to be fulfilled not only creatively but in all aspects of life. This lesson comes just in time for 2018's holiday season and I encourage you to take advantage of this time to practice gratitude and to carry it forward into the new year so you can apply this mentality towards your projects and see how it benefits you. (If you're watching this in the “future” then just pick a different milestone as your starting point. Make it simple. It can be today!) Comment below with questions or comments. A.J. Jacobs (@ajjacobs) takes over the show for a special episode. A.J. is a kindred guinea pig of self-experimentation who chronicles his shenanigans in books that seem to keep winding up as New York Times best sellers. The Know-It-All was about his quest to learn everything in the world. In The Year of Living Biblically, he tried to follow all the rules of the Bible as literally as possible. Drop Dead Healthy followed his well- (and ill-) advised experiments to become the healthiest person alive. My Life as an Experiment is about exactly what it sounds like, and It's All Relative aimed to connect all of humanity in one family tree. His latest book, Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey, chronicles his journey around the world to personally thank everyone along the supply chain who makes his morning cup of coffee a possibility: the farmer of the coffee beans, the barista, the designer of the logo for the coffee, the truck driver who transported the coffee beans, the guy who painted the yellow lines on the road so the truck wouldn't veer into traffic, the inventor of the cardboard sleeve that goes around the coffee cup (aka the paper zarf) so you don't burn your fingers, and on and on.In this episode, A.J. will be taking us through 10 strategies for being happier through gratitude in these stressful times and his agreement to do so just builds upon the gratitude I already have for this man. I hope you enjoy, and if you benefit in some way from these strategies, please feel free to reach out and thank him.Bonus: if you pre-order his latest book or let him know how much you've appreciated his earlier work, he may even personally thank you back with a handwritten card (details found here)! This episode is brought to you by Charlotte's Web, which makes a CBD oil, a hemp extract, that has become one of my go-to tools. Scientists often refer to the concept of "family bias," which states that we are prone to treat family members better than strangers, even if that family member is a distant cousin. Does this mean we could achieve a more unified and inclusive world if everyone understood that they were part of the same "genetically proven" family tree?  On the latest episode of Spit, host Baratunde Thurston sits down with AJ Jacobs, NY Times best-selling author of “It’s All Relative,” and brothers Darren and Chuck Criss of the band Computer Games to discuss the concept of family and the potential for creating unity across the entire human population. Both have very different stories and experiences. Darren and Chuck share how they were raised as a close-knit family in San Francisco, thousands of miles from relatives across the country and as far as the Philippines.  “A lot of our cousins and extended family, we didn't really know growing up because it was just on the other side of the world and we didn't grow up in the age of social media and everything, so it wasn't till later in life we connected with them”  AJ, on the other hand, shares how being approached by his “12th cousin” ignited his quest, through research and science, to unite the entire human race in one all-encompassing family tree to prove how every single one of us is related through genetics -- even going so far as to create the largest Global family reunion.  “At the Global Family Reunion, the moment that I feel that it was most united was when 75% of Sister Sledge was singing "We Are Family" and everyone was singing along in 40 different countries. It was quite moving.”  Listen in as our guests’ curiosity to understand their DNA unfolds into their DNA families and some unexpected stories.  Darren and Chuck Criss continue to work on new music for their band Computer Games and hope to release their next track in the new year. http://weplaycomputers.com/ AJ Jacobs is set to release his latest book "Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey" in which he “thanks every single person who had a role (however small) in making his morning cup of coffee possible.” ajjacobs.com @ajjacob Spit is an iHeartRadio podcast with 23andMe.
