How much would it take for you to give up your social media? Research suggests it would take a lot (not even your pets are safe). Join Rod Stewart and Bryan Adams (aka Cody B Nice and Dunny Dunyel [in that order]) as they delve even further into the relationship between social media and mental health. Specifically, Rod and Bryan describe how social media leans into some vulnerabilities of the brain, as they make an effort to decipher contradicting findings in social science research, and, lastly, make a conclusion about whether the evidence defines social media as inherently compromising for mental health. To achieve this, the nerds briefly cover some aspects of social science research that influence how accurate findings are which allows for a more evaluative consumption of what the findings suggest regarding the relationship between social science and mental health. Hang in there on this one to learn more about whether the evidence defines that relationship as absolutely negative.

Have you ever been curious about what it would be like to take a job in a town you've never lived in to guide trips on a river you've never floated while completing a Master's degree and stepping up to a position as the director of a burgeoning organization? Today, we're going #BeyondFLG with Emma Wharton, the Executive Director for Grand Canyon Youth (GCY), and she knows exactly what that is like. GCY is a non-profit organization that offers educational outdoor expeditions that connect young people to the transformative power of the rivers and canyons of the southwest. Emma, found herself in Flagpole after earning a Master's Degree from the University of Washington (#GoHuskies) in Social Work with an emphasis in Community Development. Emma also earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Utah, where she studied negotiation service-learning and environmental education. Emma became the Executive Director of Grand Canyon Youth in 2003 and has played a pivotal role in the development of the non-profit in terms of its value-based growth. She contributed to the organization's success in working through the effects of the CVD 19 pandemic's effects on the very type of service they engage with. Three words she would use to describe GCY are community, place, and discovery. If Emma could offer any advice to youth, she would say, “Remember to connect with the natural world, your community, and yourself as often as you can.” Emma says her favorite river to float is the one that she is on and this could not be a better representation for how she lives her life generally #comewhatmay. For this episode, Led Tasso and Coach Beard (aka Cody and Dan) go #beyondFLG with a Flagstaff legend, Neil Weintraub. Neil landed in Flagstaff in the mid 80's after attending college in Iowa. He worked at the Museum of Northern Arizona prior to landing a job with the national forest, where he worked and recently retired from after a 30-year career. Much of his work was dedicated to preserving indigenous sites and restoring land sites in Northern Arizona. Beyond his work as an archaeologist, Neil is a founder of Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association, often referred to as NATRA. As such, he organizes weekly group runs on Saturday mornings. He also acts as a race director for various trail races that bring together hundreds of runners for not only a great time on the trails, or partying afterwards, but also to raise funds for Flagstaff Big Brothers Big Sisters. In this episode we learn more about Neil's aptitude with organizing runs (hint: it has something to do with partying and connecting), about his experience in restoring and bringing awareness to important indigenous and environmental sites in Northern Arizona, and we scratch the surface of the dark history of Shaky Drakes and Flagstaff in the mid 80's. Neil is truly one of a kind in his outgoing nature and willingness to give and contribute to something he views as greater than his own self. This is evident in being awarded the 2016 Arizona Daily Sun's Citizen of the year and simply his work. We hope you enjoy this interview as we go #beyondFLG with Neil Weintraub

For this episode, Mos Def and Talib Kweli (aka Cody and Dan) are going #beyondFLG with Colleen Cooley (@ccoolio2). Typically our introductions have included statements about the current working roles and responsibilities of the individual with a focus on achievement. However, Colleen demonstrated a different model of introductions that we'd like to honor. Pay close attention to how she introduces herself with a focus on her personal history and heritage. For now, let us say that Colleen grew up splitting time between Shonto, Blue Gap, and Flagstaff, AZ. She grew a meaningful connection with the lands, plants, animals, and water around her that led to becoming a river guide and consulting activist. Currently, Colleen maintains her connection to the environment around her by advocating for the rights of the people and the natural world in this area. She has a powerful and important voice. Be sure to catch the “Beyond the Pandemic” series orchestrated by Colleen in which the topic of incorporating indigenous voices into decisions about the land, including the Grand Canyon, are addressed. Two episodes in those series have been released with two more on the way. Check out links to that series and other links to Colleen's work below and follow Colleen Cooley on the IG, @ccoolio2. Mike D and Adrock (aka Dr. Bayles and Dr. Phillips) continue the mindfulness series by exploring the attitude of acceptance (spelled "akseptens" according to Dr. Chinchilla Nice Nice). Acceptance is a transitive verb meaning to receive willingly or to endure without protest or reaction. Mike D offers the synonyms of openness, willingness, and acknowledgement to describe how acceptance as seeing things as they actually are in the present moment. Different then seeing acceptance as "waiving the white flag" in adversity, acceptance is aimed at accurately appraising the current situation which aids in making decisions for what steps to take next. Documented benefits of acceptance include reduced pain, stress, anxiety, depression, and management of other symptoms of disorder. Steve Maraboli says that "acceptance makes incredibly fertile soil for the seeds of change." Tune in to learn more about how to apply this attitude of mindfulness. In this episode, Dr. Chinchilla Flava Flav and Dr. Chuck D (aka Dr. Bayles and Dr. Phillips) go #beyondFLG with T. Mark Montoya, Ph.D. Dr. Montoya is a self described "recovering political scientist" who works as a tenured associate professor in Ethnic Studies at NAU. His research interests include borderlands pedagogy, citizenship, ethnic studies, DACA, and Hip Hop. Dr. Montoya has a wide range of interests outside of academia as well. One of his interests is in Hip Hop, saying that Chuck D from Public Enemy is his favorite MC of all time. Originally from New Mexico, Dr. Montoya has lived in Flagstaff for quite some time and is a powerful mouthpiece for this area. Join Frodo and Sam (aka Dr. Bayles and Dr. Phillips) for the journey of this episode as they dip into one attitude of mindfulness; Nonjudgment. If judgment is defined as the process of forming opinions or evaluation than what is nonjudgment? Contrary to the opposite of judgment, nonjudgment is being aware of your judgment including an awareness of the lens that our judgment forms. Often times our judgment is built around subconscious desires to pursue what is perceived as good, avoid what is perceived as bad, and ignore what is perceived as neutral. Learn more about drawing awareness to our judgment and not inflicting added distress. This includes a teaching by Buddha addressing the "two darts," one inflicted by experience and one inflicted by the lens we view an experience through.
