In this episode, Cory Criss joins Duane Mancini to share his path from pediatric surgeon to building innovation infrastructure at Nationwide Children's and helping launch the Midwest Pediatric Device Consortium (MPDC), an FDA-funded Pediatric Device Consortium created to accelerate pediatric device development. The conversation breaks down why pediatrics is uniquely hard—small, fragmented markets and the need for multi-institutional clinical evidence—alongside the stark funding gap, with less than 1% of VC dollars going to pediatric-only companies despite children representing 25% of the population. Corey explains how Nationwide's Innovation Center de-risks and educates through an innovation fellowship, and how MPDC unites Nationwide, Cincinnati Children's, Ohio State, Cleveland Clinic Children's, and others to support pediatric startups nationwide with expert evaluation, hospital access, and non-dilutive funding. They also discuss lessons learned managing multi-institution partnerships, sustainability beyond grant funding, and why clinician and hospital buy-in is critical for international startups entering the U.S. market.Cory Criss LinkedInNationwide Children's Hospital WebsiteMPDC WebsiteMPDC YouTube ChannelPediatric Device Consortium: Cardiovascular Focus Event Registration Duane Mancini LinkedInProject Medtech WebsiteProject Medtech LinkedInThank you to our sponsors: Ward Law and JumpStart Inc.

Morning crap pop pickers, it's another look at some of the worlds worst music, as we give you another episode of Trve. Crvp. Pop!On this week's show, sadly, Sam has been struck down by a malevolent being... or he's just feeling a bit poorly, and he can't be here. Luckily, what knight from yonder should cross our paths? Why it's Paul Waller of the excellent A Year in Horror podcast. He's here as we discuss Kiss' Music from "The Elder" the 9th studio album from the hard rock legends, released on the 10th of November 1981.We later 70's going into the 80's was a squiffy ol time for Kiss. They had embraced disco, gone pop, seen ticket and album sales take a nose dive and even their plans for a Kiss themed amusement park (which I'm sure you'll agree, we'd all love to have seen) were shelved. When original drummer Peter "The Cat" Criss exited the band, to be replaced by Eric Carr and his, not as good, Fox make up, Kiss knew they had to stop the slump. And what better way to do that than to write a concept album based on a short story by bassist Gene Simmons about... well... a boy...? And he... he's got to train to save...? Look, we're not really sure. But producer Bob Ezrin, fresh off the success of Pink Floyd's The Wall, was brought in to make it all hang together. In reality, all he did was get other people in to play over the members of Kiss' tracks and bump a shit load of cocaine. Guitarist Ace Frehley hated it, the rest of the band were immediately embarrassed by it, it went down in infamy as one of the worst albums in rock history. But, how bad is it really? We'll let you know.

In A Nasty Little War: The Western Fight to Reverse the Russian Revolution (Basic Books, 2024), award-winning reporter Anna Reid tells the extraordinary story of how the West tried to reverse the Russian Revolution. In the closing months of the First World War, Britain, America, France and Japan sent arms and 180,000 soldiers to Russia, with the aim of tipping the balance in her post-revolutionary Civil War. From Central Asia to the Arctic and from Poland to the Pacific, they joined anti-Bolshevik forces in trying to overthrow the new men in the Kremlin, in an astonishingly ambitious military adventure known as the Intervention. Fresh, in the case of the British, from the trenches, they found themselves in a mobile, multi-sided conflict as different as possible from the grim stasis of the Western Front. Criss-crossing the shattered Russian empire in trains, sleds and paddlesteamers, they bivouacked in snowbound cabins and Kirghiz yurts, torpedoed Red battleships from speedboats, improvised new currencies and the world's first air-dropped chemical weapons, got caught up in mass retreats and a typhus epidemic, organised several coups and at least one assassination. Taking tea with warlords and princesses, they also turned a blind eye to their Russian allies' numerous atrocities. Two years later they left again, filing glumly back onto their troopships as port after port fell to the Red Army. Later, American veterans compared the humiliation to Vietnam, and the politicians and generals responsible preferred to trivialise or forget. Drawing on previously unused diaries, letters and memoirs, A Nasty Little War brings an episode with echoes down the century since vividly to life. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. For this episode, I had originally planned on telling multiple, shorter stories. Then I read one article:GI's plead not guilty in murder hearingsTwo Ft. Lewis soldiers pleaded innocent in Superior Court today to unrelated first-degree murder charges stemming from the deaths last week of another soldier and a 28 year old Graham housewife. Steven Paul Criss, 19, offered his plea in the slaying last Thursday of Jacob Kim Brown, 22, an Army infantryman, whose bullet-riddled body was found in a ditch near Roy later in the day. Brown was reported to have left his Olympia home to meet a man for discussion of a debt. Trial of Criss was scheduled for November 29 by Judge James V. Ramsdell, who refused to set bail. Also pleading innocent was Sgt. 1C Richard Michael Wallingford, 33, of E. Madison St. who was accused of the gunshot slaying last Wednesday of Cindy Ann Barajas of 119th Ave E. Graham. Mrs. Barajas had been shot in the back of the head. Wallingford, whose arraignment was continued last Friday when he appeared in court in an apparently dissociative state, was scheduled for trial November 22. Bail was denied. Attorneys told the court Friday that the defendant had refused to give authorities anything more than his name, rank and service serial number. Putting those key names into the Newspapers.com search engine, I was able to find the details surrounding both unusual cases and decided I would tell those stories. Finding these cases, featuring stories of victims I've never heard of or read about is one of my favorite aspects of using Newspapers.com. Today I'll be telling you the stories of Jacob Brown, Peter Zito Jr., Donald Barton and Cindy Barajas- the forgotten victims, lost to the back page. For more details and photos, you can visit our blog at Murderintherain.comOregon Journal Thu, Oct 03, 1974 · Two Teenagers Shot Dead On Oak Hills Parking Lot - Detectives suspect decades-old disappearance, murder are intertwined | Forest Grove News-Times - The News Tribune - October 12 1976 - Obituaries - The News Tribune Sat, Oct 09, 1976 - Olympian Slain, Tacoman Held - The News Tribune Fri, Dec 10, 1976 -Army gives GI life for murder - KIRO-Killer Army vet charged in 1974 double murder of Oregon teens - Cold Case Solved: Man Arrested for 1974 Murders of Two Teenagers | Washington County, OR - Looking into the Unforeseen with a Local Author - Seeking Justice for 1974 Murder - The News Tribune Tue, Oct 12, 1976 - GI's Plead Not Guilty in Murder Hearings - The Spokesman Review Sept. 15 1962 - Weddings - 47° 4' 57.4028" N 122° 35' 53.3814" W - The News Tribune October 7 1976- A Daughter's Murder a Father's Grief - The News Tribune October 7 1976 - Solider Held in Fatal Shooting of Woman - The News Tribune October 7 1976 - Portrait of a Father's Grief - Spokane Chronicle December 20 1960- Entering Military - Spokane Chronicle Sept. 10 1962- Weddings - Spokane Chronicle May 3 1978- Courts - Cynthia Ann Woods Barajas (1947-1976) - Find a Grave Memorial - The News Tribune Fri, Oct 08, 1976- Obituaries - The News Tribune Thu, Oct 07, 1976 - Solider held in fatal shooting of woman - Tri-City Herald Sun, Oct 10, 1976 - Defendant gives name, rank, serial number - The News Tribune Sat, Oct 09, 1976 - Silent Suspect Gets Continuance - The News Tribune Fri, Oct 29, 1976- Murder Trial Reset - The News Tribune Mon, Jan 10, 1977 - Sergeant stands trial for death of young woman  -  The News Tribune Tue, Jan 11, 1977 - Defense will claim insanity - The News Tribune Thu, Jan 13, 1977 - Suspect threatened to kill self - The News Tribune Wed, Jan 12, 1977 - Gasoline-Soaked Wallingford admitted killing, deputy testifies -The News Tribune Mon, Jan 24, 1977 - Cindy Ann and Steve- who speaks for them? The News -Tribune Mon, Jan 24, 1977 - GI Murder Sentence Delayed - The News Tribune Thu, Jan 27, 1977- convicted murder given life sentenceOur Sponsors:* Check out Kensington Publishing: https://www.kensingtonbooks.comSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/murder-in-the-rain/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
