The SXSW XR Competition jury prize winner REFLECTIONS OF LITTLE RED DOT had some really innovative mixed reality integrations, and was also a part of a new trend of cultivating an archive of material as an artistic practice. This piece by director Chloé Lee featured about 3 hours of documentary interview footage shot in Singapore starting in 2015 exploring a variety of different themes. Originally started with the intent to create a documentary to learn more about her mother's homeland, Lee turned to mixed reality to create sets of themes featuring looping clips from interviews she conducted to tell the story of Singapore. The experience creates a sense of wandering that you get when exploring a new place, and allows you to dip in and out of different flows of thought. You can navigate these different themes by placing a physical photo slide into a retro slide projector that only takes one slide at a time. Once you pop it in, then you immediately see a mixed reality light creating a holographic Singaporean table where you can sit down and navigate 5-6 different clips. It's one of the more compelling uses of mixed reality I've seen that creates a holographic illusion that you use your body to edit between these different interview clips. The jury statement reads, "Deceptively humble and delightful, this open-world documentary invites us to freely explore a country in transition. Guided by a daring new talent in XR storytelling, it confronts us with the vulnerability of everyday life, evoking a universal sense of place." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Deceptive AI Deceptively-aligned AI, published by Steve Byrnes on January 7, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. Tl;dr: A "deceptively-aligned AI" is different from (and much more specific than) a "deceptive AI". I think this is well-known and uncontroversial among AI Alignment experts, but I see people getting confused about it sometimes, so this post is a brief explanation of how they differ. You can just look at the diagram below for the upshot. Some motivating context: There have been a number of recent arguments that future AI is very unlikely to be deceptively-aligned. Others disagree, and I don't know which side is right. But I think it's important for non-experts to be aware that this debate is not about whether future powerful AI is likely to engage in deliberate deception. Indeed, while the arguments for deceptive alignment are (IMO) pretty complex and contentious, I will argue that there are very much stronger and more straightforward reasons to expect future powerful AI to be deceptive, at least sometimes, in the absence of specific interventions to avoid that. 1. Definitions Deceptive alignment is a particular scenario where: A "ground-truth system" (possibly individual human evaluators, or possibly an automated system of some sort) provides an ML model with training signals (rewards if this is reinforcement learning (RL), supervisory ground truth signals if this is supervised or self-supervised learning (SL)), The AI starts emitting high-reward outputs (if this is RL) or low-loss outputs (if this is SL), i.e. outputs that one might naively interpret as evidence that training is going as intended, …but the AI is actually emitting those outputs because of ulterior motives - more specifically, the AI has situational awareness and a secret desire for some arbitrary thing X, and the AI wants to not get updated and/or it wants to get deployed, so that it can go make X happen, and therefore the AI emits the outputs that the high-reward or low-loss outputs since it reasons that doing so would be instrumentally useful for making X happen. (Why would it be instrumentally useful? Well, for one thing, the AI might reason that emitting high-reward or low-loss outputs would minimize the extent to which ongoing training will change its inclinations, which it would probably see as bad by the usual instrumental-convergence argument. the original source where the term "deceptive alignment" was coined in 2019, or Joe Carlsmith's report, or many other discussions.) By contrast, deception is much broader - it's any situation where the AI is interacting with humans for any reason, and the AI deceives a human by knowingly providing them with false or misleading information. Thus, deceptive alignment would be a special case of deception - namely, the case where deception occurs in the context of model training, and involves the AI emitting low-loss / high-reward outputs, in order to hide its secret ulterior motives, and to create a false impression that the training run is going as planned. 2. Very simple example of "deception" that is not "deceptive alignment" Suppose I use RL to train an AI to make money, and that I do so in the most obvious way possible - I give the AI an actual real-world bank account, and set its RL reward signal to be positive whenever the account balance goes up, and negative when the account balance goes down. If I did this today, the trained model would probably fail to accomplish anything at all. But let us suppose that future RL techniques will work better than today's, such that this training would lead to an AI that starts spear-phishing random people on the internet and tricking them into wiring money into the AI's bank account. Such an AI would be demonstrating "deception", because its spear-phishing emails are full of deliberate lies. But this AI w...

Growing up in a small town, I would call myself one of the "least popular" girls in school. It's not that I wasn't friendly or athletic or "goofy" pretty (you know, that awkward stage where you dress in bell bottoms and a baggy t-shirt), but I didn't "know" the right people. My family relocated to upstate NY when I was in 5th grade (a peculiar age to transition), and everyone I met had parents who taught at school, coached the women's soccer league, planned the PTO meetings, and knew somebody they could call to hook you up with whatever it is you needed. At the time, this sucked, to be honest, so today, I want to deep dive into popularity and how it's not all it's cracked up to be. I believe my personal success and achievements in life thus far are entirely because I wasn't "popular."

Dan flies solo this week in a 3-part episode where he circles back to a few hot topics that caught some listener's attention over the last few months. Back in May, Dan shared insights from a book he read called the 5 Types of People Who Will Ruin Your Life. Today he's sharing a recent story where this came into play. He also shares lessons from the best business book he's read in the past 6 months (of which he reads about 3 each week). And last but not least, he reaches into the mailbag to share a story from a listener about their Mexican Fisherman Moment. Dan raises the question: if you only had to implement one simple framework to improve your business, what would it be? In other words, what's your minimum effective dose of operational practices? Sometimes–most of the time–one simple change can make a huge difference. Today's guest represents this line of thinking to a T. Lydia Machova talks about the ROI of spending a month implementing one simple idea, developing an integrator/visionary relationship, and the minimum effective dose of operational practices that improved her business. Lastly, Dan & Lydia talk about how founders often confuse assistance with delegation and how Lydia built an operating system that empowers her team to take ownership, solve problems, and send fewer Slack messages. “Deceptively simple, but devastatingly effective” This is how Ruth Marvel, Chief Executive of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award in the UK, describes the Award. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award was started by His Royal Highness the late Prince Philip in 1956 to provide young men with development opportunities to acquire self-confidence, gain a sense of purpose and help them become well-rounded citizens. Today, The Duke of Edinburgh's Award or DofE provides an experiential learning framework that is open to all young people age 14 to 24, supporting them to learn new skills, overcome obstacles, and build confidence and resilience. Ruth shares how the organisation has changed over the years, and we explore their current strategy to enable one million young people to participate in the life-changing programmes, with particular focus on providing access to those who experience marginalisation. With a third of young people in the UK leaving school feeling like they are failing, we talk about the current context for young people, and what skills, outside of formal education, they need to really thrive in today's world. Ruth also shares reflections on the discipline of leadership in the voluntary sector and how as leaders, we constantly need to question whether we are delivering our missions in the most effective way. In today's episode, Dan talks with agency owner John Ainsworth about how implementing seemingly small, simple changes allowed him to take most of last year off, while his business still grew 30%. They discuss the modern business philosophies of Traction and Scaling Up and how sometimes those books leave you feeling overwhelmed. Dan's perspective is that sometimes the biggest ROI comes from the changes that are deceptively simple, maybe even boringly simple. “People think of traction as a mechanical system that all works together and fits together. So, when you get to the end of the book, you think three things. Number one, I have to do it. Number two, I am definitely a visionary, not an integrator. And number three, I'm guilty relative to the percentage of all this that I've implemented. And so my philosophy is really just take one thing and do it, and your business will be better in the morning.”

In this highlight from the show, Dr. Cloud talks about how and why we procrastinate and gives us some deceptively simple ways to address it. It starts with shrinking the task. Because the things we are putting off doing are always overwhelming in some way, the key is in breaking it down to one simple thing you can do. It's not that you lack the ability to do the thing you're avoiding, it's just that you aren't moving. Your emergency brake is engaged. Get that parking brake off, pop that tiny hole in the balloon, start the “leak” in that task and you're off and running.   Dr. Cloud's next workshop is on Healing Parental Wounds. In this 2-hour live streaming webinar Dr. Cloud will help you identify your parental relationship injuries, understand how to face them, and give you the practical tools and advice you need to grow past your suffering. If you can't attend live, don't worry, you can stream the recording as much as you like. Discounted pricing is available until October 9th. https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/deceptively-aligned-mesa-optimizers A Machine Alignment Monday post, 4/11/22 I. Our goal here is to popularize obscure and hard-to-understand areas of AI alignment, and surely this meme (retweeted by Eliezer last week) qualifies: So let's try to understand the incomprehensible meme! Our main source will be Hubinger et al 2019, Risks From Learned Optimization In Advanced Machine Learning Systems. Mesa- is a Greek prefix which means the opposite of meta-. To “go meta” is to go one level up; to “go mesa” is to go one level down (nobody has ever actually used this expression, sorry). So a mesa-optimizer is an optimizer one level down from you. Consider evolution, optimizing the fitness of animals. For a long time, it did so very mechanically, inserting behaviors like “use this cell to detect light, then grow toward the light” or “if something has a red dot on its back, it might be a female of your species, you should mate with it”. As animals became more complicated, they started to do some of the work themselves. Evolution gave them drives, like hunger and lust, and the animals figured out ways to achieve those drives in their current situation. Evolution didn't mechanically instill the behavior of opening my fridge and eating a Swiss Cheese slice. It instilled the hunger drive, and I figured out that the best way to satisfy it was to open my fridge and eat cheese.
