*Sebastian Junger's work as a journalist and film-maker in war zones led him to some startling facts about conflict and hardship: people are often happier in times of war than in peace; disasters are sometimes recalled more fondly than vacations or weddings; and mental illness increases the richer a society becomes. *Rather than hardship, what people cannot bear is the feeling that they are unnecessary, not part of some tight group that needs them and looks out for them. *History bears this out: in the early days of North America's settlement by Europeans, many white captives of American Indians, once freed, chose to go back to tribal life. *And many of the soldiers who Junger met admitted they didn't just struggle to find civilian life meaningful, they actually missed the war experience. *Junger pulls these facts together into a compelling argument about the intrinsically tribal nature of human beings and the dreadful cost of the de-tribalization of modern life. Our legal team here at ITM Studios told us that we have to clarify that murder, in fact, is not okay... (homicide sometimes is though). Take a gander in this weeks' episode as the brothers talk through the logistics of 'Kill Or Be Killed' scenarios such as: the ethical Trolley Problem, Murderous Headlines, and the Tribal War of 2021 where Mason and Landen actually fight TO THE DEATH. Curious? Hit that play button... or else... we may have to take matters into our very capable, vigilante hands. Support the show (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/clasedegraff)
Andre was born in a period of intense violence and tribal warfare in poverty-stricken Jamaica. He escaped with his family to the US, but not before witnessing the deaths of both children and adults, first-hand, by the time he reached five years old. Life continued to be a challenge for his family, as his parents divorced shortly after the move with Andre and his brother being bounced back and forth between Maryland and Florida. After several years, their mother decided to move to Florida permanently in which the brothers decided to join. Andre and his bother looked so similar, they were often confused as twins even though they were 8 years apart. They each did well in school, and excelled in sports. It wasn't until they hit high-school and moving to a rough neighborhood, that they were introduced to the the Florida drug culture. Becoming a drug dealer, Andre quickly fell into drug abuse and was met with difficult days. In the midst of it all, Andre became a father to two children, children he almost never saw due to him spiraling deeper and deeper into addiction. At first it was pills and cocaine, and soon after, heroin. It became increasingly difficult to juggle his addiction while keeping a low profile as a dealer. He was on a one way journey to prison or death. Caught with thousands of pills, Andre was facing up to 15 years in prison. If it wasn't for miracles, that's exactly where he would have ended up. What happens next is incredible and life affirming. Listen to the story of Andre and find out once again that. “hell”does have an exit. Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Neil Robinson of the bands Nausea, Slaughter, Warning, Final Warning, and Jesus Crust. Neil co-founded Squat or Rot and ran the Tribal War label and distro. He was also active in ABC NO RIO. Neil is now one of the founding members of the Farmageddon Growers’ Collective in Oregon/Washington. Neil and I spoke in his hand-made and electricity-less shack on the Farmageddon property just outside Portland, Oregon after a tour of the (very impressive) veganic farm. This is a long interview, every minute of which is well worth listening to. Neil recounts his life from growing up in and around London in a working class (and later middle class) family. Neil was taken by punk from its frenzied emergence from the muck of feel-good ’70s music. Soon Neil was immersed in the thriving anarcho-punk scene in London. (When he mentions some of the amazing bands he saw at that time, you will weep in jealousy.) We discuss Neil’s move to New York City and his immediate love affair with the Lower East Side and its thriving scene. Neil is frank about his involvement in the drug scene. Our talk ranges through squatting; the formation of the seminal crustcore band Nausea; starting Squat or Rot; dealing with skinheads in the ’80s NYHC scene; why he left Nausea; his other bands; and the long-running label/distro, Tribal War. We dig into Neil’s eventual disillusionment with NYC (part of it involves a pit bull biting off a girl’s nose) and moving to Portland, Oregon. In Oregon he was involved with some social/political/environmental activist organizations (one of which distributed communiques for E.L.F., the Earth Liberation Front, a domestic environmental terrorist organization). Neil’s involvement put him and his fellow activists under some serious scrutiny. We discuss the creation of and ideas behind the Farmageddon Growers’ Collective, which takes a radical approach to organic, ethical farming. This is an interview filled with colorful stories, a lot of history of the NYC hardcore punk and squatting worlds, and Neil’s thoughtfulness and good humor. Please note: As with a few other interviews I’ve conducted for this project (e.g. Martin Sprouse and Mark Anderson), Neil is not a Philadelphia person (though he played here with some of his bands and knows many fine Philly folks). I elected to interview Neil because all of his projects have had lasting influence on punks around the world (including me and many people I know). My own curiosity to meet the man himself coupled with the opportunity to do so when I was in Portland, Oregon to visit my friends Kathie and Jason led to this interview. I’m delighted to have Neil Robinson add his voice to this project. Farmageddon Growers’ Collective Facebook Page Neil Robinson’s Facebook Page The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! www.reggaejamaicaway.com Jamaican music singer John Holt recently passed away. What a great singer. John Holt has a number of very significant qualities that will last over time: Holt was the lead singer for a classic Jamaican harmony group, The Paragons. Holt scored iconic hits with The Paragons like “On The Beach” and “Tide Is High” which was an early crossover hit. Holt then continued with a solo career and again created smash hits with “Ali Baba,” “Stealing, Stealing,” “Police In Helicopter, and “Up Park Camp.” Holt sang the original of “A Love I Can Feel” which became one of the most prominent versioned Reggae songs in history. Holt also sang many of the classic Reggae songs and placed his original touch – marking them as Holt classics: “Only A Smile,” “Before The Next Teardrop,” Tribal War,” and “Can I Change My Mind.” John Holt was a Jamaican super star from a young age and his career spanned decades of music, from Ska, to Rocksteady, to Reggae, and in to modern day Dancehall.
