Thaao Penghlis Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Looking as fit, youthful, and handsome as ever, thrice Emmy nominated, Thaao Penghlis, was a model of class, sophistication, charisma, and information. As has always been the case, the conversation flowed and the time flew. We talked about Thaao's travels to Egypt and Greece, how to best visit his family's homeland, The Lost Treasures, his podcast, his passion for cooking, his first appearance on a cooking show, and what he cooked, the recent drop of the paperback of his Seducing Celebrities One Meal At A Time, why he's no longer on Days of Our Lives, and the illness that he faced without fear, with grit determination to best, which indeed he did. Diagnosed with colon cancer early in the pandemic, Thaao, who's spent his life with extreme discipline––a Mediterranean diet, little to no junk food, regular exercise, daily meditation, yet he was predisposed to the disease which took his mother. With the same no-nonsense directness, Thaao faces everything in life, he took on his illness and beat it into remission, with the support of loving friends, which he credits with helping him get through the six months of hellacious chemo and radiation, where trim to begin with Thaao dropped 50 pounds. You'd never know any of that to look at him today. When last we met almost two years ago he was not quite on the other side of it but not yet ready to talk about it. Leave it to Thaao to use his challenge to be of service to others discussing it openly, including a suggestion that might ease the path for others now facing treatment. As is Thaao's style, even this conversation was done with great good humor… culminating with a fabulous story about Robert Redford which got cut short when Thaoo's battery died. Suffice it to say it has a happy ending with “Bob” as he calls him, being gracious and familiar. Yes, Thaao's first cinematic starring role was in John Avildson's, Slow Dancing in the Big City, followed by Ken Russell's, Altered States, with William Hurt, and as Dame Edna's love interest in Les Patterson Saves the World. He also played the lead, Nicholas Black, in the television series, Mission: Impossible, and starred in several mini-series, including, Tribe, Memories of Midnight, and Under Siege. We talked about none of that. We stayed focused on his current events, the projects Thaao's working on now with a new writing partner, and his aspiration to produce as well. The weight's back on, he's working out thrice weekly, and throwing his fabulous dinner parties. oh please invite me! Spending time with Thaao is like a feast for the soul - where every course is new, exciting, and delicious, and at the same time, comforting, and familiar. Slow Dancing with the Devil: A Son's Substance Use Disorder, A Mother's Anguish is a stirring account of a mother's journey alongside her son through the depths of substance abuse. From his initial dependency on narcotics, stemming from multiple prescriptions of oxycodone, to surviving a harrowing 1% chance of survival after a near-fatal car crash in 2010, their story is one of resilience in the face of unimaginable odds. Today, the author and mother, Susan Bartz Herrick, joins us. Over the years, her son endured a litany of medical challenges, including multiple hospitalizations, surgeries, and intestinal blockages, all while grappling with the ongoing necessity of narcotics for pain management. Yet, amidst the medical turmoil, Susan uncovered a stark reality: the medical community's lack of understanding in treating individuals with narcotic dependencies, particularly concerning anesthesia for surgery. Compounded by stringent regulations limiting access to crucial medications like suboxone, their journey sheds light on the systemic barriers individuals face in accessing comprehensive addiction treatment. Herrick shares insight into the enduring nature of substance use disorder, challenging prevailing notions of a "cure" and confronting the pervasive stigma that surrounds those afflicted. Tune in to uncover: Why there's no such thing as becoming totally "cured" from substance use disorder The cultural image of people with substance use disorders and how stigma affects the people who are afflicted by substance use disorder The 1200% increase in overdose deaths in the past 24 years – why is this happening, and why aren't we talking about it more? The process of how one becomes addicted to a substance and undergoes tremendously painful withdrawals The treatment of addiction in US culture compared to other medical conditions like heart disease The role of sugar, diet, and exercise in recovering from substance abuse and addiction Take advantage of this moving conversation. I had a blast chatting with the great Australian-born actor and world-class raconteur, Thaao Penghlis, about his career and creative process. If you're a fan of NBC's long-running soap opera, Days of Our Lives, then you're also likely to be a fan of Thaao's. Thaao has earned 3 Emmy nominations for Outstanding Leading Actor and a Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Return.Thaao's infamous dual roles are on top of playing a wide-range of characters on various TV series, movies, and plays, including two other daytime series, General Hospital and Santa Barbara, as well as appearances on the 1980's prime time reboot of Mission Impossible, in which Thaao played master-of-disguise Nicholas Black. Other notable appearances include the films Slow Dancing in the Big City, Ken Russell's Altered States, The Bell Jar, Sadat, Sidney Sheldon's Memories of Midnight, Under Siege, Tribe, and as Dame Edna's lover, Colonel Godowni in the cult classic Les Patterson Saves the World. A world traveler and celebrated host of Hollywood dinner parties, Thaao has authored his memoir Places: The Journey of My Days, My Lives, and also the cookbook Seducing Celebrities One Meal at a Time.Thaao, whose family were Greek immigrants to Australia, has poured his passions for all things Greece into a new podcast, The Lost Treasures, a fantastic detective story-style exploration of Greece's greatest contribution to the world's literature, the poet Homer. Susan Bartz Herrick, MFA, EdD., is a retired professor at UNC-Fayetteville, St. Andrews University, and Methodist University. Early in her career, she was a Community Liaison Specialist at HCA Cumberland Psychiatric Hospital and Treatment Center, giving seminars on Mental Health Disorders and Addiction. Susan Herrick's memoir follows the story of her beloved and only son, Luke, through his struggle with opioid addiction, recovery and sobriety, and untimely and heartbreaking death. Luke suffered a near-fatal car accident that left him partially paralyzed and addicted to Oxycontin, the very drug that helped save his life. Susan turned to the streets to obtain Suboxone, a legal but medically restricted opioid blocker, in an attempt to save her son's life. Remembering this, she writes, “The day I became my son's drug dealer, we both died, in a way.” This poignant and compelling memoir exposes the rampant prescribing of Oxycontin, upwards of 600mg daily in cases like Luke's, and the role overprescribing plays in the disease of Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Through Luke's story, Herrick addresses failed public policies, misguided medical practices, societal stigmas, and enabling tendencies of loved ones that hinder recovery for those afflicted with SUD. Please welcome to our show Susan Bartz Herrick, whose memoir, “Slow Dancing with the Devil: A Son's Substance Use Disorder, A Mother's Anguish,” follows the story of her only son, Luke, through his struggle with opioid addiction, recovery, sobriety, and untimely death. Susan is joined by Luke's closest friend, actor Jacob Taylor, who is seeking to bring Luke's story to life as a film. Jacob was recently in the movie, “Oppenheimer.” Speaking with Susan, I was taken how determined she is - even through her gut-wrenching grief - to to expose how so many continue to struggle with opioid addiction, how the medical community continues to prescribe the drug, and what can be done to keep the drugs from being overprescribed, and how best to help a person once they become addicted. And it's very difficult. Please join our full interview on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE, and please invite anyone you know who can benefit from this conversation. Susan is a professor, and her book is well researched with documentation from authorities in the medical profession. We look forward to having you join us. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt.
In this rendition of The Way Out I'm ecstatic to bring you my interview with Recovery Advocate and Author of the soon to be released book entitled Slow Dancing with the Devil: A Son's Substance Use Disorder, A Mother's Anguish, Susan Bartz Herrick. I've learned that often in life less is more, and this is one of those times. Susan's message that Substance Use Disorder is not a moral failing, it's a legitimate and diagnosable disease and Recovery is absolutely possible comes through in such powerful and enlightening fashion that anything I could say on the front end would only serve to diminish her quite salient, much needed, and incredibly well articulated message. So without further ado, Susan shares her and her son's journey with substance use disorder and recovery, including the heartbreaking death of her Son, who was under no uncertain terms, poisoned as you'll hear firsthand in the compelling and necessary Recovery discussion that is about to unfold before your very ears so do be sure you listen up. The Gauchos are back this week with some NFL Draft/Tyree Wilson talk in the first half of the show before talking a bit about Drae McCray and how his arrival makes this Red Raider offense different. And then in the backhalf, mailbag!
In this episode, we're exploring the concept of "do overs" and the courage it takes to keep taking chances. I'm joined by Brahna Yassky, who embarked on her fifth career as a writer at the age of 60. Her debut book, "Slow Dancing with Fire," is a memoir of resilience that addresses universal issues of beauty, identity, and visibility vs. invisibility. Her story encourages everyone to believe that do-overs are possible, no matter what age you are. Tune in to be inspired!

Right now, a lot of things seem really bad. There are microplastics embedded in all of our bodies—including millions of bodies now stripped of autonomy, thanks to the Supreme Court. Wildfire season is heating up (literally), everything costs more than it used to, and it's hard to escape this pervasive feeling of existential dread permeating every corner of our lives which, unfortunately, also includes beer. In his piece titled “Slow-Dancing in a Burning Room — The Cost of Climate Change on Beer's Favorite Crop,” published on May 12, 2022, Matt Osgood shares insights from farmers and scientists about the impending changes hops face in light of what he calls the “unbiased chaos of natural disaster.” It's dire out there, he explains, but he believes the best chance for beer lies solely in the hands of human ingenuity mixed with technological advances. Today, Matt and I discuss our collective responsibilities as beer drinkers and journalists, but also as citizens of the world—a world that seems like it's changing no matter what we do. But by claiming our power as individuals, we retain the hope that our children and our children's children stand a fighting chance of not just existing, but enjoying Earth's bounty, including craft beer. All of these issues are intertwined, and it can feel like playing whack-a-mole when making decisions. But this push and pull of human restraint against human destruction only continues to gain importance, making conversations such as these crucial for the future of beer, people, and Earth. Let's dive in.
