As far as I know, it's also the first publication that explicitly stated a specific version of "Hybridity" in the formation of Kreyòl. This sort of Hybridity has come to be known as the (now disconfirmed) "Relexification Hypothesis" whereby Kreyòl is: … a form of French fashioned in the mold of African syntax, or, since we generally classify languages based on the history of their grammar, Haitian Creole (Kreyòl) is an African (Ewe) language with a French vocabulary. This talk is an exercise in intellectual history and critical race theory to try and understand the historically and geo-politically rooted biases in the deep contradictions between Sylvain's theoretical claims, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, her detailed comparative data triangulating Kreyòl, French and Ewe toward a thorough documentation of systematic parallels, at the levels of morphology, lexicon and syntax, among all three languages. We will analyze certain discursive links between language, linguistics, identity, decolonization and liberation through the prism of the formidable intellectual biography of Comhaire-Sylvain – Haiti's first linguist and anthropologist and the first Haitian woman to obtain a PhD, back in 1936. Comhaire-Sylvain's contributions can help us forge a better future ahead – for Creole studies, Creole speakers and more.Michel DeGraffMichel DeGraff is Professor of Linguistics at MIT, co-founder and co-director of the MIT-Haiti Initiative, founding member of Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen and fellow of the Linguistic Society of America. Michel entered linguistics through the "backdoor" so to speak, in 1985, as a Summer Intern at AT&T Bell Laboratories' Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence department in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Michel obtained his PhD in 1992 with a dissertation on the syntax of Haitian Creole. Today, Michel's research contributes to an egalitarian approach to Creole, Indigenous and other non-colonial languages and their speakers, as in his native Haiti. In addition to linguistics and education, his writings engage intellectual history and critical race theory, especially the links between power-knowledge hierarchies and the hegemonic (mis)representations of non-colonial languages and their speakers in the Global South and beyond. His work is anchored in a broader agenda for human rights and social justice, with Haiti as one spectacular case of a post-colony where the national language spoken by all (Haitian Creole) is systematically disenfranchised, even in certain scholarly traditions, while the (former) colonial language (in this case, French), spoken by few in Haiti, is enlisted for socio-economic, political and geo-political domination.

We first interviewed Professor Michel DeGraff back in season 1; he now returns for another episode, diving deeper into issues of culture and identity. He talks about his childhood in Haiti, where he was punished at school for speaking his own mother tongue, and where he was taught by his teachers and even his parents that Kreyòl was not “a real language.” After doing early work in natural language processing that led him to question widespread assumptions about language, Prof. DeGraff shifted his academic focus to linguistics. He now begins each iteration of his course 24.908 Creole Languages and Caribbean Identities by asking his students to write linguistic autobiographies that describe the languages they grew up speaking and examine their own attitudes about language. In addition to discussing that course, he talks in this episode about his efforts to draw attention to language's role in perpetuating imbalances of power. As an added bonus, we hear from two students from 24.908, discussing how Prof. DeGraff helped cultivate trust in the classroom, and how that trust freed the students to enrich each other's understanding of the world by sharing personal experiences and insights.*English Translation of Prof. Michel DeGraff's Kreyòl Statement: So, my fellow countrymen,There's something that is very VERY important to understand:we must understand the origins of prejudices against Kreyòl.We must also remember that Dessalines said, so clearly, that everyone is human. And he also knew that,if everyone is human, then every language is a perfectly normal language. So Kreyòl, too, is a perfectly normal language.  That's why he said, since before 1804,that Kreyòl is our own language,so we don't need to always look for other languages to speak.Yes, we must remember, if we did not have Kreyòl as a language,we could never have succeeded in making this revolutionthat gave us an independent Haiti.Kreyòl was the language of the revolution. So, today, we must useKreyòl too as language of instruction. It is this language that will allow all children in Haiti to access quality education as their right.Relevant Resources:MIT OpenCourseWare The OCW Educator Portal Professor DeGraff's faculty page 24.908 Creole Languages and Caribbean Identities on OpenCourseWare The MIT-Haiti Initiative Chalk Radio Season 1 episode with Prof. DeGraffNY Times op-ed by Prof. DeGraff Linguistics and Economics in the Caribbean (article by Ianá Ferguson) Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions (https://www.sessions.blue/) Connect with UsIf you have a suggestion for a new episode or have used OCW to change your life or those of others, tell us your story. Finances. A deeply intimate, intimidating, and yet common struggle in couple communication. Finances are an inherent part of daily living, yet we treat them as though they are taboo or the plague. We often hold discussing it as more vulnerable than every other topic, including sex or religion. Despite money being a crucial part of our lives, we rarely receive any education around how to interact with finances and talk about it with our family or partner. This can create apprehension, fear, and complete avoidance. Time to switch it up and bring this topic into the light!   Join us as we welcome another guest to discuss money with couples and financial therapy, Dr. Alycia DeGraff, LMFT. Dr. DeGraff earned her clinical master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Texas Tech and her doctorate degree in Human Development and Family Science from the University of Georgia.  Dr. DeGraff specializes in financial therapy, therapy that focuses on our relationship and patterns with our finances individually and as a partnership. Dr. DeGraff shares her profound clinical insights about why this topic is important in couples, how we develop our narratives around finances, effective tools to start this challenging conversation, and ways to improve our relationship with money in the future. You don't want to miss this one! If you find this episode, or any of our other episodes, helpful to you, please share with those that you love! Let us know what you think about what you want us to talk about next by emailing us at RelationshipsInsideOut@gmail.com! In two weeks, we talk about trauma, including symptoms of PTSD, treatment options, and tips for supportive loved ones. Later topics include: the impacts of mental health on physical health, parenting, self-acceptance, compassion in couples, neurodivergence, navigating milestones as a couple, and so much more! For more helpful resources and updates, follow us on Facebook at @RelationshipsInsideOutllc!Some resources related to this episode:1. Rock N Roll Pantheon
Highway Hi-Fi Ep. 79: The Music of Cults, Part 1

Rock N Roll Pantheon

Cults can manifest themselves in any number of ways. They deal in the currency of human beliefs….religious, political, racist, or terroristic beliefs. And can be delivered in the form of a prophesying doomsday, increasing human potential, or enhancing one's position using new age techniques, black magic, crystal skulls, anything on Gwyneth Paltrow's website, or other supernatural means. And while it can be difficult to know exactly when a group is truly a cult, they tend to share three things: a charismatic, often authoritative leader; an indoctrination program into a transcendent belief system; and a system of control through exploitation. These self-styled leaders prey upon the most malleable members of society. Generally, those are the most stable and predictable of us. Cults use varying means of conditioning and thought reform through deception, isolation, dependency, and fear. One of the more fascinating tools in their horrible toolbox of manipulation is the use of music. As with the case of Bixby and DeGraff, there is a strange balance and codependency of music and mind control. Music is consistently seen playing a role in the establishment and functioning of cults, radical sects, and new religious movements. It can not only bring people together, it can also bring people into the fold.In this episode, we delve into the bizarre world of music made from within cults. Tunes that were left behind as relics of evidence of exploitation and excessive, destructive devotion. Results that are so strange because they were almost certainly weaponized by a brainwashed minion. Music that is created in a vacuum of narcissism, removed from free thought and outside influence. Hymns to self-appointed prophets, saviors, divine conduits, Christ reincarnates, gurus, faith healers, alien leaders, and Sting (probably). We will look at music from some of the world's most infamous cults as well as the songs that are so insular, they make no sense outside of their context, even when that context makes no sense either. So, cleanse off your chakra, open your mind, pull on your robes, lace up your Nikes. Today, the music of the cults. Join us, won't you? Forever? One of the main resources we used for this episode was WFMU's Music of Mind Control with MicahHighway Hi-Fi is a proud member of the Pantheon Music Podcast Network - Home of the Finest Music Podcasts
