Tyler Shipley, Professor and author, starts the episode off by explaining just what the term 'colonial imagination' means. He tells us how it was used to justify the genocide of Indigenous peoples here, and how it STILL shapes how Canada interacts with the world. He gives countless examples of Canada's modern day colonial interventions in the global south, often with our eyes on resource extraction. Repeating the same patterns of land grabs, assimilation and violence. The mining sector being at the heart of many of the worst human rights violations encouraged or even facilitated by the government of Canada. How do we retain such a squeaky clean image on the world stage? A lot of states-craft and nationalist propaganda helps - as does the colonial imagination that we've collectively retained as settlers.Tyler also pushes back on the notion Canada is seen as peacekeepers anymore. The mask is slipping, and the Liberals seem fine in playing war hawks and coup supporters with the world watching. The discussion necessarily turns to Palestine and how the colonial imagination plays out, not just in the occupation, but in how Canadians are reacting to it all back home. At the end Tyler reminds us that part of the battle is simply education and revealing some of the parts of our history that may challenge how people see Canada. This week, we're joined by a guest for the very first time, which is exciting! Unfortunately they have brought with them an unwatched DVD from their own collection which was excrutiating! JACKSON McDONALD (Roxy Fever) guides us back into bio-pics with a movie that at times feels like a made-for-TV Ray, 2009's Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Kimberly Elise, and Aunjanue Ellis. It's a movie Jackson believes found its way onto his shelf via his father-in-law, and it's not something we recommend anyone watch before listening along. You can hear more of Jackson's film takes on his own movie podcast, History Lesson: Part II with co-host Tyler Shipley. If you're a complete masochist who does want to see the movie before listening to the podcast, Gifted Hands is currently streaming on Netflix Canada at the time of publication. We'll be back next week with Ben Affleck in The Accountant.

Rudy and Brendan join Tyler Shipley, author of Canada in the World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination, for a discussion on the past, present and future of the Canadian state. We discuss the terms "Settler Capitalism" and "Colonial Imagination", the formation of Canada through Confederation, the historical policy of Canada towards indigenous people and the current debates around residential schools and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), how Canada is falsely posited as a gentler alternative to the U.S. and the difference between the "Canadian mosaic" and "American melting pot" approaches to immigration. We also discuss the centrality of decolonization and the impossibility of santizing the signifier of Canada. We strongly recommend checking out American Indian voices on the topics covered. Aside from the classics by Howard Adams: Prison of Grass and A Tortured People, and Glen Sean Coulthard's Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition, the book Stringing Rosaries: the History, the Unforgivable, and the Healing of North American Indian Boarding School Survivors by Denise Lajimodiere and Mary Annette Plumber's numerous articles are good ways to continue learning. M. Gouldhake's writings are also an invaluable source on the Canadian context and aswell as a resource on Marxism/anarchism and Indigenous people. We also recommend the following Red Nation Podcast episodes as a basic introduction to the ways indigenous people are organizing around these issues: No Apologies, Land Back (on Boarding Schools) and MMIWG2S+: No more red hand prints! We also alluded to (non-indigenous) Patrick Wolfe's Traces of History: Elementary Structures of Race in the episode.

Justin Trudeau once claimed that Canada had no colonial past. A new book just out from Fernwood Press would disagree. Canada In the World looks closely at Canadian foreign policy and finds a consistent pattern of colonial conquest and capital accumulation. Tyler Shipley joins us to talk about his new book, Canada In The World: Settler Capitalism and the Colonial Imagination, the Sedins as positive male role models, and Ron MacLean's role as Canada's chief propagandist for liberal interventionism.

This week's episode of the Global Research News Hour takes a close look at the Migrant Caravan making its way from Honduras to the US-Mexico border. In the first half hour, guest Tyler Shipley, author of Ottawa and Empire: Canada and the Military Coup in Honduras, outlines the ways in which Canada and Canadian business interests has supported and enabled the very violent living conditions in Honduras that Migrants are fleeing from. In our second half hour, independent writer and photojournalist José Luis Granados Ceja reports on his observations of the migrant from his time with them in late October. He describes the narco-trafficking and other dangers the migrants have confronted during their 4000 kilometre journey, his thoughts about the November 25th attack by US border agents, and what he anticipates as a leftist politician, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assumes the presidency of Mexico on December 1st.
Recently the so called "migrant crisis" in Central America has been a major topic in the news. Images of women and children being tear gassed at the US border lays bear the moral and humanitarian crisis. But what about Canada? While this news seems far away in fact the Canadian state policies in Central America have contributed much to this crisis. From supporting mining companies that poison the water and displace people from their homes. To the Canadian government legitimizing the government in Honduras that got to power via a coup. Scott and Greg place the so called "migrant crisis" in the context of Canadian foreign policy and the moral bankruptcy of the human rights troll industrial complex. You will also hear two clips from the Radio Free Winnipeg archive that cover the the lead up and aftermath of the 2009 coup in Honduras. In this extended episode we talk to Tyler Shipley, author of Ottawa and Empire: Canada and the Military Coup in Honduras, about his new book, and the coup he witnessed firsthand. In his book, Shipley uses the 2009 coup in Honduras as a clear example of Canada's imperial ambitions, and argues that the Canadian state holds an independent agenda, not always beholden to its more powerful neighbour to the south. We also discuss Canadian (left) nationalism more broadly and the need to build an opposition to it through sports and other elements of mainstream culture.
