On this episode of Canucks Talk, the Crossover with Donnie & Dhali sets the stage as the guys break down Elias Pettersson's Olympic performance and the growing pressure surrounding his future in Vancouver. With insight from Adam Foote's comments and reaction from Drance and Jamie, the show examines Pettersson's speed, confidence, and whether there's a legitimate NHL trade market for him. The crew also dives into Slovakia's upset over Finland, Olympic lineup surprises, and what it all means for the Canucks' need at center. As the rebuild intensifies, tough questions about direction, accountability, and roster construction take center stage. Team Canada takes center stage as Kyle Bukauskas joins Canucks Talk to break down Olympic roster decisions, line combinations, and key questions around Sidney Crosby, Drew Doughty, Connor Bedard, and Macklin Celebrini. The guys dig into Canada's goaltending dilemma, why Jordan Binnington still leads the race, and how Team USA, Sweden, and Finland stack up as true threats. From David Kampf and Teddy Blueger's Olympic opportunities to Elias Pettersson starting on the third line, we look at how this tournament could impact trade value and future roles. Plus, what the Quinn Hughes situation means for Vancouver, New Jersey, and the Canucks' long-term outlook. In this episode, I'm joined by Sapsterr for a deep, wide-ranging conversation about how the Vancouver Canucks ended up here and what comes next. We start with preseason expectations and why the season quietly fell apart once Filip Chytil went down, and the team never solved its centre depth issues. From there, we spend a lot of time unpacking Elias Pettersson's game, why his offensive efficiency has dropped, how injuries, usage, and lost chemistry changed the way he plays, and why much of the criticism around him misses the point. We also dig into Brock Boeser's role, why he's still an elite finisher despite the numbers, and how the team's lack of play drivers has exposed his weaknesses. Finally, we zoom out to the rebuild, the importance of this upcoming draft, and how adding a true offensive driver like Gavin McKenna or Ivar Stenberg could reshape the direction of the franchise and unlock Pettersson's game again.- Nuckhead

Jamie and Thomas lay it out plainly: this Canucks team isn't good enough, and any fear of rebuilding should be gone as Vancouver sinks deeper into the standings. With no game-breaking offence and Pettersson contributing defensively but not on the scoresheet, the case is made to fully commit to the rebuild and escape the mushy middle, even if it means accelerating painful decisions. They also react to Canada's disappointing World Juniors exit, questioning whether skill-over-structure failed on the biggest stage. Plus, Elliotte Friedman's latest on Sherwood negotiations and what it means with the Canucks sitting 31st overall and staring at long playoff odds. Does Hughes heading to Minnesota shift the balance of power in the Central Division and what are the chances of him re-signing with the Wild? Plus, a look at the GM change in Buffalo and a discussion on what may be the next move for the Sabres... a coaching change? a roster shakeup? The guys also play a little "In or Out" in regards to the Olympic rosters. Bedard, Celebrini, Geekie, DeBrincat, Pettersson and Wallstead are all up for debate.

Can we find a middle ground between those who see the EU's wolf downlisting as a catastrophe and those who celebrate it as good news? The debate around wolf conservation in the EU has become frustratingly polarised, with both sides 'crying wolf' about the consequences of changing protection status. It's time to step back and look at the evidence. When dealing with controversial subjects like this, it is important to be factual and follow the evidence. So I was delighted to have the opportunity to talk about it with Dr Hanna Pettersson, one of the most prominent early career voices in interdisciplinary conservation. Hanna is the lead author of a paper titled 'Now What? The Conundrum of Successful Recovery of Wolves and Other Species for European Conservation', co-authored with Professor Erica von Essen, who was also a guest on the acclaimed episode 163.During our conversation, we discuss the success conundrum in conservation, the difference between ecological and social carrying capacity, and why we need to think about future pathways rather than looking back. We also talk about the role of legal hunting in reducing poaching and the importance of working with local communities who have lived alongside wolves for generations. Of course, there are larger systemic issues underneath and we don't shy away from discussing those as well, including inequality as a driver of biodiversity loss.Further reading:Now What? The guys break down why strong goaltending and brief scoring bursts can mask deeper issues for the Canucks, who are trending toward the lower end of the standings because of limited center depth and uncertainty under Adam Foote. They question how Vancouver can climb out of the basement down the middle and why the team clearly misses Rick Tocchet's structure. Jannik Hansen joins to discuss how thin the margins are across the NHL, why elite teams struggle to maintain peak form, and how last year's loose, low-pressure stretch inflated expectations. The show closes with a look at the stagnant umbrella power play and the need for a real third option beyond Pettersson and Hughes. Today in my 3rd day as media for the podcast at Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana on 1st day of tournament I was joined by 2023 Helsingborg Open winner Lisa Pettersson & 4x LET title winner Alexandra Forsterling as they came for a brief chat about their day in the Malaga sun as well as give people an insight into how Real Guadalhorce is playing as well as finding out their plans for the festive season. Lisa Pettersson would finish -4 today including a 30ft eagle putt in on 4th hole as she was playing alongside Alessandra Fanali & Kelsey Bennett. Lisa admitted that she has not got a lot to play for bar the win after a solid campaign has her inside the top 30 in the LET Order of Merit standings although still the utmost professional she seems relaxed and definitely looking forward to Christmas time. Today is Alexandra Forsterling's 26th Birthday what better way than to spend it with friends and loved ones in Malaga. Lexi admitted that her pputting got her out of jail at times today although a disappointing finish for the 4x LET champ it's small directions onto the comeback trail after losing a bit of confidence on LPGA Tour last year then dealing with a couple of injuries and not back to her brilliant best yet. It was great to chat with Alex on her birthday as her tour mates got her a nice cake. Happy Birthday Lexi! Thanks Lisa & Alex for coming to chat after play today! Jamie and Thomas discuss the Canucks dropping a 4‑2 decision to Dallas that coach Adam Foote called their best game of the season. Vancouver leaned heavily on its top forwards, with Pettersson, Garland, Boeser, and DeBrusk all logging over 20 minutes, while the bottom of the roster barely saw the ice. With Calgary looming on Sunday in what feels like a must‑win, Brendan Batchelor and Dimitri Filipovic join the show to break down the Dallas loss, and dig into how Evander Kane's impact and the Canucks' power play could shape the weeks ahead. Jamie and Thomas get into the Canucks falling 4‑2 to Dallas, and while Foote called it their best game of the season, one good effort every 22 games won't cut it. Vancouver leaned heavily on its top forwards, with Pettersson, Garland, Boeser, and DeBrusk all logging over 20 minutes, while the bottom of the roster barely saw the ice. Next up is Calgary on Sunday—a near must‑win given the Flames' resurgence since late October and the Canucks' playoff odds dipping to 38%. The guys break down the Canucks' shaky stretch of four points in five games and what it means if they can claw their way back to .500 hockey. With Vancouver sitting last in scoring chance creation, they dig into puzzling lineup choices — including keeping Garland away from Pettersson despite their strong chemistry. The show also explores the uncomfortable question of when the ideal time to trade Quinn Hughes would be if he ever signaled he was leaving. Plus, thoughts on David Kampf's tough debut, why reducing Raty's minutes makes little sense, and updates on Forbort, Höglander, Blueger, and Garland. Jamie and Thomas discuss the Canucks improbably grabbing three points against Carolina and Tampa Bay, and now David Kampf makes his debut in Florida as Vancouver looks for more sustainable offense and centre depth. Josh and Thomas break down the Canucks' weekend surge, spotlighting offensive growth, defensive commitment, and Karlsson's net-front impact. Landon Ferraro joins the conversation as they dive into Pettersson's line grinding in the defensive zone, but questions linger around shot generation, PK struggles, and whether players need to be more selfish offensively. Finally, we explore the economics of rebuilding, the franchise's reliance on selling hope, and why a playoff berth might not mean playoff success. In this episode I react to the first four Vancouver Canucks games of the season and try to answer the only question that matters right now: are the Canucks actually good yet? I talk Chytil's early case as a second-line-center, why Garland and Pettersson should stick together, what the Stars game told us, what the Blues game didn't, and why the Abby line looks legit.
