More info on his research can be found at yorku.ca/bakerj His new book is called The Tyranny of Talent: How it Compels and Limits Achievement… and Why We Should Ignore It and it is a doozy. In our conversation today we go over th emain points Joe discussed at the IIHF conference we both spoke at in September 2025. We try and define what talent is, and why labels and talent ID systems have been so damaging to children, all the while missing many of our potentially most talented athletes. In this week's edition of the PodKaz, a weekly look at NCAA women's hockey from USCHO.com, hosts Nicole Haase and Todd Milewski discuss a change to the IIHF calendar. The Women's World Championship is moving from April to November during the 2026-27 season, so players could be pulled away from their college teams for national team duty.Nicole and Todd discuss whether enough consideration was given for the developmental path in making an accommodation for the PWHL to not have to disrupt its schedule. Then it's a look back at last week's play, which saw important sweeps for Ohio State and Minnesota, a split between Clarkson and UConn and another stumble by St. Lawrence against Mercyhurst. Also: Delaware earned the first-year program's first victory. We wrap up with a look ahead to games between ranked teams: No. 4 Minnesota Duluth at No. 1 Wisconsin, No. 3 Minnesota in a home-and-home series with No. 10 St. Cloud State and No. 14 Boston University at No. 8 Colgate. The PodKaz is a production of USCHO.com. Welcome to episode 210 of Sports Management Podcast. Today's guest is Szymon Szemberg, a reoccurring guest who first appeared on episode 5, almost 5 years ago – and a lot have happened since. Szymon recently wrote an article about the NBA closing in on a league in Europe and if this could lead to an NHL-driven ice hockey league in Europe as well. This topic became even more relevant when NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently stated that such a league could start already in 2027 or 2028. Szymon is the perfect person to discuss this topic. He has been a player, coach and later sports director and managing director of an elite basketball club in Sweden. He has worked as a sports reporter, covering both basketball and hockey. Between 2001-2014, he served as Communications Director for the International Ice Hockey Federation. He was the Champions Hockey League's project lead and later COO (2013-2015) and most recently he was the Managing Director of EHC, Alliance of European Hockey Clubs, from which he just stepped down after 10 years. We spoke about: Why the NBA is planning a new European league How such a league could be structured If NHL can go the same route, and if so how the league look like Szymon explains the possible 4 scenarios, from least to most likely. We also cover the financial and political implications And much more! The Post-Gazette's Adam Bittner and Jason Mackey react to a busy week of Pittsburgh sports news. Should OTAs be a red line for Steelers GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin in their pursuit of QB Aaron Rodgers? How important is the offseason program to his success, given that it didn't seem to matter much for Russell Wilson and Justin Fields? And how much worse off would the Steelers be with Mason Rudolph as their starter instead? Is the national media bashing he's received fair? Our duo tackles those questions; the difference between George Pickens and DK Metcalf as WR1; and the team's biggest remaining weakness after adding Derrick Harmon and Kaleb Johnson in the NFL draft. Later, the guys discuss the Penguins coaching search. Why does Mitch Love continue to make a lot of sense as a frontrunner? How much say should Sidney Crosby have in the hiring process? And how cool is it to watch Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury play together one last time at the IIHF world championships? Then in the third segment, airing on the PG's Pirates YouTube channel, our duo ponders Ben Cherington's options as the season continues to slip away. Is there a trade he can make to salvage his job? Is that a move he should be allowed to make, given his track record? Would firing him have a bigger practical or psychological impact? And what should we make of the Paul Skenes trade chatter, initiated this past week by ESPN's Jeff Passan? Adam and Jason give their thoughts, then analyze the catching situation with Henry Davis and Joey Bart. And Alexander Canario's recent hot streak.
