Thought of Raising Backyard Chickens? Every Spring, thousands of chickens are sold at local farm supply stores. Often these chickens die before they are ready to start laying eggs (16-30 weeks). Children quickly realize that chicks are not as fun as the Xbox and parents find out that chickens cannot be house broken! The costs quickly start increasing, then chickens are "sent to the farm". Other people think about chickens but think they do not have the space, worry about regulations, or just do not know what they need. Do you build or buy a coop? Do you buy peeps? How do you raise an egg laying hen if you buy a peep? Did someone tell you about a heat lamp? It can all be overwhelming and they take the guess work out of all the questions by offering a portable coop, the food & supplies, and the egg laying hens! Why "Rent the Chicken"? They provide all the supplies you need to get started: portable chicken coop, two to four egg laying hens, 100-200 pounds of feed (optional non-GMO or Organic feed available), food & water dishes, a chicken keeping book as well as instructions on how to keep your chickens happy! Within two days of the arrival, your chickens will lay eggs ready to use! These eggs have one-third less cholesterol, one-fourth less saturated fats, and two times more omega three fatty acids than store bought eggs. Your Rent the Chickens should lay about a dozen to two dozen eggs per week depending on your Rental Package. You will know exactly what your chickens eat! https://www.rentthechicken.com/http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

They also talk about other things to consider when gifting an ukulele, and the songs that newbies can start with. A question about Favorite Ukulele Websites leads to a discussion about Social Media, and the dream of Raising Chickens. Aldrine answers a question about using all vs some of your fingers for fingerpicking before opening a gift from "Sarah and Craig". When someone asks for a tutorial to the Europa improv, Aldrine and Kahai share their thoughts on how to learn improvising, and why you should stay positive on your music journey. The podcast ends talking about the new Solo and Play Along, and reminding people to get the Holiday Sweater while they can.

Ever wondered how the cost of chicken feed trickles down to the eggs on your breakfast plate? Prepare to be enlightened as we discuss the economics of poultry keeping, examining the pivotal role of feed costs in egg production. We'll share with you the phenomenon of 'chicken math,' revealing the game-changing strategy of measuring feed by weight rather than volume. Through the episode, we navigate the textures of poultry meat and the importance of tailoring your cooking techniques to optimize the flavors, whether your bird is a layer, a meat type, or a dual-purpose breed. With our insights, matching your culinary skills to the bird's breed is about to become your new superpower in the kitchen. As we progress, we confront the complex but necessary subject of culling birds from the flock. Through personal experiences and strategies, we dissect the balance between flock productivity and sustainability. You'll hear how we allocate specific segments of the flock for culling, consumption, breeding, and more; like how I allocate 50% for the freezer, 40% for distribution, and keep the remaining 10% for breeding purposes. The episode wraps up with a deep dive into the breeding and hatchery side of poultry farming. We'll share tales from our transition from a humble coop to a large-scale operation, and discuss how modern technology, like GoV sensors, is revolutionizing the incubation process. On today's episode, we are joined by Pasturebird Farm's founder & farmer,Paul Greive. Paul transitioned from city life as a corporate accountant without a background in agriculture when an illness required him to change the course of his life. After serving in the Marine Corps and contracting Lyme disease during sniper school, Paul began to look more closely at what he was putting into his body to focus on healing, but wasn't able to find pasture-raised chicken that fit his Paleo needs. His family ordered 50 chicks as part of an experimental hobby when they first moved to Temecula, and now Pasturebird is the largest pastured poultry farm in the world and official supplier of chicken to the LA Clippers and Dodgers. On this episode, we get into the problems with our food system, why pasture raised chicken is important, industry myths, sustainability, how to read labels at grocery stores, regenerative vs. factory farming and what this means for both plants and animals, glyphosate and its long lasting impact, the importance of buying directly from farmers, hidden truths about farmers markets, soil health and the environment, ancient wisdom from indigenous practices, and getting back to our roots by finding the joys of nature at any age.
