Happy Holy Week! I didn't grow up gardening and so I don't even know how to do a normal garden! I started my gardening journey by tilling up an area of our yard-well, my husband tilled it for us and then we just planted seeds and plants. This kinda worked and we got some produce from it, but I could never keep the weeds under control as we have full lives and a cabin we would go to every week and family camp for 10 days over the 4th of July. I had to make some changes or I wouldn't garden at all. I had to keep it simple or I would be overwhelmed and would quit gardening. Everything I do, I tweak into simple systems and this goes for gardening too~it has to be simple for me because our lives are very full! I don't like to spend alot of time in the kitchen cooking and I don't like to spend alot of time in the garden weeding either~I have grandkids to enjoy!!!!!! If you live in the city, apartment, or are a suburban homesteader, you can plant your garden in pots or raised beds in a small area and just start out with a few items that you eat often just to learn how to garden. You can always add more and this will keep you from getting stressed out and overwhelmed with gardening. If you are having trouble with growing food, one of the first suggestions I would say is to get your soil tested. We had very sandy soil, so we had to add alot to ours for it to grow better. I actually started vermicomposting several years ago as well and that has been so much help for our garden. Vermicomposting is something you can do in a suburban area, city or apartment as it doesn't take up much space. Let me know if you want more information on it, but listen to episode 32 to start with!!!! It is so simple and important for your garden! I'm going to order more worms and expand as I have a much larger garden space at our new home. My 2nd tip is if you want to keep critters away, we sprinkle blood meal around our garden and a small amount around our plants and nothing goes near them. I do this also for my flowers that the chickens might attempt to eat. I actually now have my flower beds away from the chickens, but this also keeps the deer and rabbits away which is nice because they used to eat all my hostas and other plants just as they were coming up from the ground! I used to make a natural deer and rabbit spray with eggs and spices, but every time it rained I had to reapply and the animals seems to beat me to the plants, so the blood meal has been nice as I only usually have to spread it a couple times all year and you use such a little amount. And lastly, this year I am going to try the no dig garden as it is supposed to be much better for the plants so I don't know if I am going to need to do this or not, but in the past, we got smart with the weeds and layed out fabric and burnt holes in it to plant seeds or plants and we rarely had to weed. This worked amazingly for us and our garden was very plentiful. I posted a video of our garden in our facebook group if you want to see what it looked like. We would have a few weeds here and there, but most of it was covered so the weeds couldn't get through. If you want to see these videos and be a part of our community, the link will be below! And here is a bonus tip if you are able to do this. Set up an automatic watering system. Our last home was on the river, so we drilled in water lines to the garden and then had hose to each plant and had it on a timer, so I never had to worry about the garden getting watered if we were away for an extended period of time and this was a life changer~especially during the summers when we got very little rain. I'm not sure how exactly my husband is planning on setting this up at our new home, but he probably has a plan as we have a hydrant close to one of the large gardens and he will most likely drill another line into the other one to keep everything running smoothly and without alot of hands on work. It does take time to set up simple systems, but once they are set up, it all runs systematically and is much less work! I would love to know any simple tips to help keep your garden abundant and stress free!!!!!! Send me an email or join our community at the link below and let me know! Ever since 2020, I have become increasingly aware of how fragile our food supply system is. My wife and I made the decision to start growing our own food and raising chickens, something that we had seen our neighbor do on a ¼ acre lot and we figured, if they can do it, we can do it! That's why I'm excited to be chatting with Jill Winger, author of Old-Fashioned on Purpose: Cultivating a Slower, More Joyful Life. Over the past 10 years, Jill has helped thousands of families learn how to grow their own food, ditch the grocery store, and live the Old-Fashioned on Purpose lifestyle. Similar to how the Miracle Morning shakes up our daily routine, Jill's approach shakes up our entire relationship with food and self-sufficiency. You'll learn how to embrace a producer's mindset, the magic of growing our own food, and the importance of reconnecting with our environment. This episode first aired on July 19. Among cultures around the world, it's traditional to grow your own food. But with the rise of supermarkets and grocery stores, gardening in the United States has become more and more uncommon. But, what do you do when the food you like to eat isn't sold in grocery stores? Or when there are no supermarkets near you, and you can't afford to buy fresh produce? This isn't uncommon in Nashville. North Nashville, East Nashville, South Nashville and Edgehill all have neighborhoods with food deserts. Community members are taking matters into their own hands. If you look around, you'll find local farms, community gardens and organizations working to make gardening (and good food) more accessible to Nashville residents. Growing your own food isn't easy, and in this episode, we'll hear about why support is so important for local farmers and gardeners. We'll also hear about how gardening can be fulfilling in ways that extend beyond just feeding us. We're joined by a local poultry farmer, members of groups attempting to eradicate food deserts and promote gardening and the professor who founded Vanderbilt University's Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden. Guests: Cynthia Capers, poultry farmer and owner of the Heniscity Farm in Pegram, TN Lauren Bailey, co-founder of Growing Together and Director of Garden Outreach and Engagement for the Nashville Food Project Donald Frost, site manager for Trap Garden Professor Avery Dickins de Girón, anthropologist and founder of Vanderbilt University's Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden

Hey there! This has been an interesting week and I decided I will go back to 1 episode per week unless I have some extra time each week to put out 2 probably for the next few months anyway. If you haven't listened in the last few weeks, God put it on my heart last month to put our house up for sale which makes no sense to us at all, so knowing that we need to be obedient, within a few weeks, we put our home up for sale and it sold within a couple days. I am a planner and at this time we don't know where we are going to live because there is nothing available that we are looking for and we want to make sure we stay debt free and if we build, it probably won't be done this year because most of the builders around here are already booked up, so we are trusting that God will make it obvious as He already has His plan for us and God's plan is always perfect. It has been 2 weeks now and waiting is so so hard sometimes. We do have a couple options, but God is saying to have patience and wait. We did rent 2 storage units, bought a 24' enclosed trailer and plan to have a storage container delivered to our cabin because we have lived on our 10 acres for 10 years and have accumulated many items-especially having a little homestead. Our goats will go to our son and daughter in laws house and the chickens will be split up to a variety of places, so we are planning as much as we can at this time, but moving from this home will be very hard because we have put so much work into our place to make it just how we want it and we will most likely be starting from scratch again. I will keep you all up on this journey because I believe God has something for us that He wants the whole world to know about and I can't wait to share it with you when I know more! Today I want to talk to you about 5 tips to help you reduce your grocery bill by growing your own vegetable garden as a beginner gardener. If you have never planted a garden and you don't know how to save seeds, you can still save money growing your own vegetables this year! Listen to episode 25 to learn more about seeds if you would like to save even more! Depending on where you are in the country, you might still be able to start seeds if you want to! First, figure out where you are planning to have your garden and how much space you will have. If you are growing food in pots, then you will be a little limited as to what you can grow.If you have space, I recommend starting raspberry bushes or strawberry plants, because they will grow and you will yield more each year. Many people are happy to give away shoots from their raspberry plants and runners from their strawberry plants in the spring, so ask around or look on craigslist or marketplace so you don't have to spend money. You won't get much fruit the first year, but the second year you should be very pleased! If you have some extra money, plant a few fruit trees as well for your future. Second, many times you can go to smaller greenhouses and they have smaller plants, but their prices for 1 plant is usually cheaper than buying whatever it produces at the store and each plant will produce multiple vegetables. Right now I'm thinking about peppers. It cost me almost $2 just for 1 pepper the other day in the store, but you can usually find pepper plants for less than that and it will produce several peppers. Just to compare-when you buy a packet of seeds, it is usually less than $2 as well and then each seed is a plant that produces several peppers, so you can see how planting seeds is even cheaper than buying a plant that is already started, but it is much more convenient to buy the plants than start seeds, so whatever works best for you-you will save so much money planting them yourself as long as you take care of them! Third, you will be able to save money because you can preserve food for most of the year and then you won't have to buy food in the off season because that can really get expensive when you buy food when it is out of season-here anyway when we can really only grow food about 4 months of the year. The bonus to learning how to can and preserve food is that it tastes amazing, knowing you grew it and that you can do it, and the huge amount of money you will save! You can do this - I want to help you start growing your own food because not only is it more nutritious, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment. I can't even tell you how much you will enjoy this process! Fourth, If you are not able to grow your own food, you can buy from a farmers market or look for people giving produce away. Many people grow more food than they need and so they are many times looking for people to give it away to, so keep your ears open and learn to preserve the food so that when you are able to grow your own food, you know what to do with it. Just preserving food for the year will also save money even if you can't grow it yourself right now and that is a huge step forward in your journey. Fifth, have fun with it and don't get discouraged. If you are a beginner gardener and some of of your produce doesn't do well, use that information as a learning experience for the next year. We all have different soils and weather, and each year seems to be a little different, so don't get frustrated. I have been gardening for quite a few years, but I still learn new information each and every year and there are so many different ways to grow food, so if something doesn't work one year, try something else the next year. As you probably already know, I like to keep everything streamlined and simple, so I know you do not need to complicate gardening either. Start small so you don't overwhelm yourself! Get a few plants that you want to try and get started! Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions and I would be happy to help in any way I can! I will keep you updated on my new garden this year as it will be a new adventure for me with new territory starting from scratch with clay and rocks, so I don't know what will grow this year and what won't, but I am going to give it a try! We are in the depths of winter, and whatever the weather may - or may not - have in store for us in this traditionally chilly month, Head Gardeners Lucy and Saul turn their thoughts to the year ahead. Often mistaken for a quieter season, there are plenty of winter tasks to complete and projects to initiate. Winter pruning, leaf clearing, renovations and new plantings will all be discussed (we can't promise that conversations about biscuits and lists won't also appear...). Whatever the topic, the duo hope to prime us all for the unfolding gardening seasons. This week, Saul rests his mighty voice, while Lucy takes us on a tour of her home kitchen garden, just outside Colchester. Here, she talks you through her 2023 grow your own plans, as she daydreams of early broad beans, baby carrots and lush spinach. Fruit pruning also needs to be completed, and while some trees should be cut back in summer, there are plenty of edible berry and orchard crops that warrant attention now. The episode is also audio-bombed by Isaac (the cat). Never let it be said that we don't go the extra mile to lay on a suitably furry Saul stand-in...!Twitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulLucy @HeadGardenerLCIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Support the show

This episode inspired me so much! Wow. Jordan and Silvan have found some innovative ways to live off the land without actually owning any land! They also go into this seasonal challenge that they do, their staple crops, how and where they grow, and so much more. Jordan and Silvan are experienced farmers and sustenance gardeners who specialize in small-scale food production in an urban environment. After running a small organic CSA farm in North Carolina for a couple of years, Silvan and Jordan relocated to Pittsburgh and focused on making their home garden and community garden plots a source of abundant food and education. In addition to their popular Instagram and TikTok profiles where they share their journey eating what they grow, forage and hunt, Silvan and Jordan both write freelance gardening articles for the online publication Wild & Whole. They also just finished their comprehensive online gardening and preserving course, The Complete Guide to Growing Your Own Food. Growing food doesn't have to be complicated. If you're new to gardening it may seem that way. You hear people throwing around words like cross-pollination, root bound, indeterminate, and hardening off and you feel they are speaking a different language. In episode 11 I talked about my thoughts on jumping in blindly to the homesteading life. I cautioned you not to start without some planning in two areas- when it involves animals and when it involves wasting money. Today I'm going to say the opposite and tell you to just do it! Just start that garden. Here are 3 reasons why you should start now and not wait: Seeds want to grow. We just have to create a nice little bed for them to grow but their will to grow is strong. Growing food can be inexpensive. Learning to grow food has a low barrier of entry. You can find free seeds through people around you and sometimes through the food you purchase in the grocery store. You will only become a better gardener through failures and successes so the sooner you start the fast you will develop this skill. Listen to the podcast to learn 3 things you can do during the winter months to prepare for next year's garden.
