While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week. Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. The facility is expected to process an estimated 1,500 head per day, according to Sustainable Beef officials. We will have more on Sustainable Beef LLC and its new fed cattle grid pricing system with Red Angus Cattle on next week's program. A new year brings new questions and more insights to the topic of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Dr. Mike Brasher is joined by leading experts in the field of avian influenza, Dr. Dave Stallknecht, Dr. Richard Webby, and Dr. Jennifer Ballard to discuss the current status of avian influenza, what we've learned since 2022, and what we still don't understand. Recent changes have been noted in the genetic code of the circulating virus, but what does this mean for the risk it poses to birds, mammals, and humans? How do we study these changes? What waterfowl species are most affected, and do we understand why these effects differ among species? Also discussed is recent science about risks to hunting dogs, what hunters need to do if they observe sick or dead birds, why hunters should be vigilant about being tested for avian flu if they feel ill, and how we can all work to reduce the likelihood of the virus becoming more severe. This week in beef markets is a repeat of last week, this market is shaping up to be a classic holiday market. The middle meats, strips, ribeyes and tenderloins all moving up again next week. Don't expect any relief on middle meat pricing until the end of the year. This continues the advice to buy now, waiting will cost you money. Also same as last week, moving lower chucks and rounds, briskets coming off a bit, and grinds continue lower. With turkey taking center stage the next two weeks we may not see as middle meats moving up as fast, but they won't be coming down. Productions holding up pretty well, 619K head harvested last week, up from 615 the week prior, still with very large animals, running 38 lbs. heavier than last year. Calves are valuable no matter how you plan on using them, such as replacement heifers or beef. So how can you protect that investment in your own barn? It may seem obvious, but where there's manure, there's bacteria. And while manure is a natural element in a barn, it might have negative implications for your calves. Patrick Lecavalier is the vice president of market development with Acepsis. He explains that farms should look at biosecurity within their own farming system, and disinfecting pens/regions of the barn before bringing in a new group of young animals. He walks us through options for disinfecting the animal itself, its environment, and its water. In addition to stopping common calf sicknesses, these can also be solutions for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, Patrick says.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Of the top four dairy producing states, Wisconsin is the only one to not have a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza case in dairy cattle. But America's Dairyland producers can still be a part of the Dairy Herd Status Program. It's a voluntary, incentive-based program that will monitor your herd so that you can stay ahead of HPAI if it does hit Wisconsin. Rosemary Sifford is a deputy administrator for veterinary services and the chief veterinary officer with USDA. But her jurisdiction is also global. She's the U.S. delegate to the World Organization for Animal Health. She represents the United States in voting for international animal health standards. She says there are other animal disease outbreaks around the globe that the U.S. should pay attention to. But trade partners are also watching HPAI here at home.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Updated March 2022 Joint AABP-AVC Judicious Therapeutic Use of Antimicrobials in Cattle Cattle Industry News: Avian Flu Update, Livestock Indemnity Payments, Cultivated Meat Influenza Sweeps Through Northwest Iowa Dairy Cattle According to MeatingPlace.com, following Iowa's first positive case of HPAI, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, in dairy cattle in early June, Iowa has reported four new cases in its northwest region. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture & Land Stewardship, influenza was detected in three dairy cattle herds in Sioux County and one in neighboring Plymouth County. Both northwest counties border O'Brien County, where Iowa's first dairy cattle influenza case was reported June 6. At the time, Iowa was the 10th state to confirm HPAI in dairy cows. The nationwide outbreak of the avian virus in dairy has struck nearly 100 herds across 12 states. Bills Introduced To Help Unborn Livestock Losses U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson introduced the Livestock Indemnity Program Enhancement Act to help Texas livestock producers recover from the devastating wildfires that occurred in the Texas Panhandle earlier this year. This bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish an additional payment rate through the Livestock Indemnity Program for excessive unborn livestock death losses, according to the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. Cattlemen Take Aim At Government Investment In The Cultivated Space The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) issued a statement condemning a Department of Defense-sponsored research grant that will fund the development of cell-cultivated meat products by manufacturing company BioMADE. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane said, “It is outrageous that the Department of Defense is spending millions of taxpayer dollars to feed our heroes like lab rats. U.S. cattle producers raise the highest-quality beef in the world, with the lowest carbon footprint — and American troops deserve to be served that same wholesome, natural meat and not ultra-processed, lab-grown protein that is cooked up in a chemical-filled bioreactor”. He went on to say “This misguided research project is a giant slap in the face to everyone that has served our country. Our veterans and active-duty troops deserve so much better than this.” BioMADE is described as a public-private bio-manufacturing consortium sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. USDA put out a new order mandating that all dairy cattle be tested for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza before interstate movement. This comes as eight states have reported cases of dairy cattle having Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. Rod Bain explains more about the new order.
A month after Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza was discovered in dairy cattle, the risk to humans remains low. Chad Smith tells us the impact of the illness has been minimal. Smith: The last couple of years have seen outbreaks of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the spring and fall as temperatures change. However, this year has seen an unusual outbreak of the virus among dairy cattle. Bernt Nelson, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Federation, provides an update. Nelson: We've seen some positive cases pop up in dairy cattle, and this is a developing situation. This is changing, sometimes it's day by day, sometimes hour by hour. But what we do know so far is that milk is safe to drink. So, the positive tests in dairy cattle showed up around three weeks ago. Since then, we're at about 30 different dairy premises showing positive cases in eight different states. Smith: Nelson says the impacts on the cattle have been minimal so far. Nelson: There have been no deaths that are attributed directly to avian influenza. There is some co-morbidity happening where it seems if the symptoms of avian influenza are accompanied by other issues. So, some comorbidity is happening. Overall, we're seeing a 20 to 30 percent decrease in milk production as a result of a slowdown in food and water intake. Any milk from these animals is thrown out, so it's not allowed to enter the supply chain, and animals are recovering after a couple of weeks. Smith: He wants consumers to know that milk remains safe to drink. Nelson: Number one, their milk is safe to drink. Sick cows are pulled out of the herd, so their milk is not allowed to enter the supply chain. Further, pasteurization kills both bacteria and viruses. This includes high-path avian influenza, so their milk is safe to drink. Capps: It's important to note there have been no reported cases of this type of influenza in dairy cattle in Tennessee. Tennessee State Veterinarian, Dr. Samantha Beaty, issued an order limiting movement of dairy cattle coming from states where there have been positive cases which include Texas, Kansas, Michigan, and New Mexico. For Tennessee Home and Farm Radio – I'm Thomas Capps.

THE MOOD IN ISRAEL is tense this weekend, as intelligence sources say Iran is preparing an imminent attack to retaliate for the recent airstrike against Iran's embassy in Damascus. Against this backdrop are Internet rumors about plans to sacrifice a red heifer to prepare for construction of the Third Temple. Some say it will happen on April 22, 2024. Unless Israel National News was wrong about the ages of the five red heifers delivered to Shiloh last July when we discussed it on this podcast (or unless someone was lying), the earliest one of them could be slaughtered, according to rabbinic tradition, is this coming September. Meanwhile, Iran seized a container ship owned by an Israeli in the Strait of Hormuz. This suggests that Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have been working with Israel to bypass Yemen's blockade of the Red Sea on the other side of Arabia. We also discuss the recent fascination with UFOs and “aliens.” Christians should be prepared to discuss the inhuman entities that have been visiting the planet for thousands of years. They're not extraterrestrial, they're extradimensionsal. We call them angels. Finally, we address Tucker Carlson's misinformed and antisemitic interview with Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac this week. Carlson has never been a friend of Israel, but he made his bias clear by giving a platform to an Arab pastor from Bethlehem who places more importance on his ethnicity than his Savior. Also: Keeping an eye on HPAI, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, which is now reported in seven US dairy herds. Thank you for making our Build Barn Better project a reality!
