After being wrongfully convicted and spending 27 years in prison, Angelea Preston talks with artist and Buffalo native Valentino Dixon. The two talk about how he was able to reconcile feelings of despair while incarcerated by listening to advice from his uncle, to use his passion for art to reclaim his life. Valentino Dixon's world was turned upside down when he was wrongly accused and then convicted of a double homicide after another man confessed to the crime. He was exonerated after spending 27 years behind bars. Marty Tankleff was wrongly convicted of murdering his wealthy parents and freed on appeal after serving 17 years of a 50-year-to-life sentence. When he was just 21 years old, Valentino Dixon was sentenced to 39 years to life for a murder he didn't commit. When he first got to prison, he believed it'd just be a matter of time before he was exonerated, but as time wore on, he started to lose hope. Then, everything changed when his uncle sent him a set of colored pencils. He urged Valentino to start drawing – he said that if he reclaimed his life, he could reclaim his freedom. That he could draw himself out of prison.And he did. 

FairPlay Ep4 | Exonerated with Valentino Dixon It Took 27 Years For Him To Get Justice May 17, 2021 | Imran Siddiqui | JusticeNews.Net Joining me on this episode of FairPlay is someone who persistently fought for justice for his own life and his freedom and for the truth and he got it but it took him about 27 years to get there, and his name is Valentino Dixon. And he spoke with us out of Buffalo NewYork. On June 12, 1992, the jury convicted Dixon of second-degree murder of Torriano Jackson, attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. He was sentenced to 38 1/3 years to life in prison. Fast forward to 26 plus years to September 19, 2018, Lamarr Scott, the actual shooter, who admitted to this crime many times before, pled guilty to manslaughter in return for a sentence that would run with the 25 to 50 year sentence he was already serving for another killing. That same day, Dixon's convictions for second-degree murder of Torriano Jackson, attempted murder, and assault were vacated and the prosecution dismissed the charges. The conviction for criminal possession of a weapon remained intact because the TEC-9 that Scott said he used in the shooting belonged to Dixon. Dixon was then released from prison more than 27 years after his arrest in 1991. Valentino's case is best described in the words of Max Adler at The Golf Digest. "The case is complicated, but on the surface it involves shoddy police work, zero physical evidence linking Dixon, conflicting testimony of unreliable witnesses, the videotaped confession to the crime by another man, a public defender who didn't call a witness at trial, and perjury charges against those who said Dixon didn't do it. All together, a fairly clear instance of local officials hastily railroading a young black man with a prior criminal record into jail. Dixon's past wasn't spotless, he had sold some cocaine, but that didn't make him a murderer." A lot of the unjust and cruel treatment that Valentino has suffered throughout his 27 year long nightmare can easily be understood by going through the work of Phil Fairbanks at The Buffalo News and by Maurice Possley senior researcher at the National Registry of Exonerations. For now he awaits the result of a pending law suit against his accusers. His nightmare, partly continues, he says in the interview, the city ran out of money. Valentino Dixon was convicted of a murder he didn’t commit at the age of 21. He was sentenced to 38 years to life. He spent the next 27 years of his life fighting to get out of prison. He maintained his innocence throughout. With the assistance of three law students at Georgetown University Innocence Project, evidence of Valentino’s innocence was discovered. He was set free after 27 years in 2018.

We tell ourselves that prisons are populated by guilty people. We justify treating prisoners poorly, harshly because they "deserve to be there". There is a long tradition underlying this myth. Ben Franklin reportedly said "it is better to let a hundred guilty men go free than one guilty man be convicted". The advent and continued improvement of DNA technology has proven that wrongful convictions are a regular part of our criminal justice system. Mary and Lee welcome award winning attorney Don Thompson who is unfortunately an expert in wrongful conviction exonerations. Don has had five post conviction exonerations. They are amazing successes born out of epic systemic failures.  Don joined forces with The Innocence Project, out of New York City, which works to exonerate people based on DNA evidence.Here are some facts about exonerations pulled from The Innocence Project website: "The first exoneration occurred in 1989, to date there have been 375 more. The average number of years served before exoneration is 14. 21 of those people had been on death row. 44 pled guilty to crimes they did not commit. All but 15 of the exonerations involved some form of false confession. 60% of those exonerated were Black and 31% were white."  In a functioning system the appellate system would conduct meaningful reviews of convictions and would catch wrongful convictions in short order, but it doesn't and that is in large part because Judges and District Attorneys fight tooth and nail to oppose meaningful review of the evidence to keep these convictions intact.  Don discusses his representation of Valentino Dixon who was wrongfully convicted of murder even though another man confessed on camera within a day of the shooting. Mr. Dixon's conviction was affirmed by the appeals courts. He served 28 years before being released and it was in large part because of the interest taken by Golf Digest, of all publications. It is a truly fascinating and frustrating saga. Wrongful convictions hurt everyone, the innocent person loses years, decades of their life that can never be recovered, the victim and the public are decided and are sold a false sense of security while the true culprit remains free to commit more crimes, creating more victims, and tax dollars are spent incarcerating an innocent person. College Football Player Kills Girlfriend He said, he “wanted to be her hero” and come to her rescue. Former Division III College football player, William Gaul who was (19) from Knoxville, Tennessee, was arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 16-year old, Emma Walker. 2. Valentino Dixon After spending 27 years inside prison for murder, 48-year old, Buffalo, New York native Valentino Dixon is a free man. Jailed in the infamous Attica Correctional Facility for the murder of Torriano Jackson, both Dixon and Jackson were attending a loud street party in August of 1991. During the party, a fistfight broke out which then turned into a gunfire. Dixon brought a gun but it was another man, 1. The Shooting of Botham Jean In what is described as one of the worst police shootings to happen this year, Dallas police officer, Amber Guyger shot Botham Jean inside his apartment in the South Side Flats Complex in Texas.
