Welcome to The Big Impact Ep 249 - Pancakes for Roger - Susan Combs Major General Roger Combs was a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who was diagnosed with Agent-Orange-related throat cancer in his later years, which he had been exposed to as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. His daughter and best-selling author, Susan, acted as his caregiver through his final days. In his final treatments, he used a feeding tube for his meals. One day, she recounts, she found him setting the table for breakfast: “I came downstairs, he was setting the kitchen table for himself and I looked at him rather quizzically and asked what he was doing. He looked at me and said, 'I want pancakes for breakfast.'” Major Roger Combs passed shortly thereafter and never got his pancakes, but Susan was determined to keep his memory alive. She's the champion behind the #PancakesforRoger movement, a moving tribute to her late father, which encourages people to share photos of themselves enjoying pancakes on social media to keep her father's memory alive. For every post with the hashtag #PancakesforRoger, her company will donate a dollar to the Mizzou Law Veterans Clinic, an establishment near and dear to Major Combs's heart. ---- BIG IMPACT VIDEO CHANNEL - You'll find free VIDEOS of our podcast interviews HERE SUBSCRIBE to the Big Impact Podcast for free! Welcome to The Big Impact Ep 247 and an inspiring, powerful conversation with best-selling author, Cesar Perez. A professional actor with a promising career, Cesar Perez was on a meteoric rise until a drunk driver slammed into his car head-on. He coded on the paramedics more than once on the way to the hospital, and coded again when he arrived. It's a miracle he even survived. Still, he wouldn't have called it miraculous at the time. In one devastating blow, all his dreams had been ripped away. A severe brain injury had left him almost entirely incapacitated. His right arm was paralyzed. His femur had snapped in two. His face was shattered. He spent months learning how to breathe, eat, walk, and talk all over again. In the midst of it all, his girlfriend left him—the same girlfriend he had been on his way to see that fateful night. But life, ultimately, is a gift. Fragile, firm, and beautiful. Throughout the course of Cesar's long, often tortuous recovery, Chase the Light shines with courage, grace, and the resilience of the human spirit—reminding us that every life has meaning and every soul has a purpose, always, even in our darkest moments. Welcome to The Big Impact Ep 244 and the powerful story of Adam Hill and his new book, Shifting Gears. It was never part of Adam Hill's life ambition or his genetic constitution to wear a Speedo in public, let alone compete in a triathlon. For the first three decades of life, he was the poster child for non-athleticism, obsessively unhealthy habits, and an intense fear of...well...everything. Yet at the age of thirty-three, with a physique that could only be described as "Sasquatch with a Dad Bod," he put aside his insecurities and took his first step toward an outrageous dream: to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. It was a dream shared by nearly every other triathlete in the world, reserved for the top 1 percent of all athletes in the sport—a sport in which Adam had exactly zero experience. In Shifting Gears, Adam shares his harrowing, inspiring, and sometimes-clumsy story of transformation, from the origins of a debilitating anxiety disorder to his battle with alcoholism to his rise to the top of the triathlon world stage. ---- BECOME A BIG IMPACT "INSIDER" We need your help to continue presenting the Big Impact each week.
