Find Buzzy & VibraCool at shop.paincarelabs.comFirst, Dr. Baxter talks about how all the normal safety and efficacy procedures were followed as with normal FDA vaccine processes, it's only more background information and subgroup testing that were deprioritized to save time.Fainting and embarrassment about fainting are not directly tied to needle fear. Those who were afraid of fainting were much more likely to choose the J&J one-shot vaccine given all options - so J&J sites self-select for a more fainty crowd. Tip: drink 16 oz of a caffeinated drink one hour before, and don't get the immunity on an empty stomach. Feel woozy? Crouch or bring one leg up to push blood back into your brain. Fainting can act as a warrior response, allowing someone to faint but stay alive in battle. A CDC study of fainting with the HPV vaccine found no one fainted in the Buzzy group, but 1/10 did in the "listen to music" group.Meditation was commonly user suggested as a tool for handling needle fear where topical anesthetic was not present at all. Thinking about loved ones and physical touch were also suggested as tools for lowering needle fear during injections.Dedicated COVID-19 webpage here: https://explore.paincarelabs.com/covid-19-vaccination-resourcesBuzzy and VibraCool are FDA registered 510(k) cleared to Control pain associated with injections, venipuncture, IV starts, cosmetic injections, and the temporary relief of minor injuries (muscle or tendon aches, splinters, and bee stings). Do you fear needles and the associated pain? No one understands this fear more than physicians who see it firsthand with their patients day in and day out. And one physician in particular set out to do something about it.In this episode of the Global Medical Device Podcast, Jon Speer talks to Dr. Amy Baxter, CEO and founder at Pain Care Labs. Amy discusses the pros and cons of being a physician, entrepreneur, and inventor of reusable, physiologic medical products to eliminate unnecessary pain. Some highlights of this episode include:The medical world works on 2-D pharmaceutical schematics, but doctors' minds work on three dimensions. Physician inventors see the whole body, person, and need to develop effective medical products.Physician inventors think they know everything, so it's difficult for them to follow ISO 13485 and painstaking medical device development and not get frustrated. The time duration for Amy's innovation and invention journey took years to get patents, meet regulatory requirements, and address the opioid crisis. Pain management is esoteric and subjective. Amy encourages physician inventors to fall in love with their problem, not their solution. Pain, chronic or not, is a real problem. Amy shares life lessons for physician colleagues with innovative ideas. Find a group like Greenlight Guru or GCMI to understand navigation early on. Branding matters, so choose wisely. Also, Amy advises physician investors to not get hung up on non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Nobody steals an idea, they steal a medical product.Amy expects the future of pain management to include multiple specific energy devices in people's medicine cabinets to use before and after surgery. Mechanical stimulation will be the primary one because it's easy and safe to use.Buzzy® is a palm-sized device that combines cold and mechanical stimulation to block pain and improve muscle soreness, blood flow, and recovery. The VibraCool® Cryo-vibration product, VibraCool's M-Stim, is 2-3.4 times superior to electrical stimulation (TENS) for physical therapy. It has demonstrated 35% fewer opioid tablets. Also, a lower back pain device is in clinical trials and expected to be released this year.Memorable quotes by Amy Baxter:“We see the whole body, we see the whole person, and we see the need.”“The downside of being a physician inventor is that we both feel like we know everything.” “Wanting to be able to do something is really the push that puts a lot of physicians into the entrepreneurial space.”“Fall in love with your problem, don't fall in love with your solution.”“Try your idea out on someone who does not love you.”Links:Pain Care LabsISO 13485 - Medical DevicesISO 14971 - Application of Risk ManagementFDA - Part 11EU MDRNIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR))/Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Mayday FoundationGlobal Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI)Dr. Richard MelkerMedical Device Podcast, Ep 186: Building a Startup in the MedTech Industry Greenlight Guru AcademyThe Greenlight Guru True Quality Virtual SummitGreenlight Guru YouTube ChannelMedTech True Quality Stories PodcastGreenlight Guru

This week, I'm excited to welcome Dr Amy Baxter to the podcast. Dr. Baxter directs innovation, invention, operations and strategy for Pain Care Labs. After graduating from Yale University and Emory Medical School, as a double boarded pediatric emergency physician, Dr. Baxter founded PEMA Emergency Research while also founding Pain Care Labs (initially called MMJ Labs). Accomplishments include multiple NIH SBIR Fast-Tracks and review panel service, writing and overseeing patent strategy, and successfully pursuing 510(k) FDA clearances. Recognition includes Forbes Ten Healthcare Disruptors, Inc. National and international lecturing highlights include Exponential Medicine “Future of Pain Management”, TEDx, State Department VentureWell keynote, and TEDMED. Questions asked in the episode How might we know if our pain is normal or if we should see a medical professional? What strategies do you recommend for managing chronic pain? When should we use ice for pain as some say this strategy is outdated? https://180nutrition.com.au/ This week, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Amy Baxter to the podcast. Dr. Baxter is a double-boarded pediatric emergency physician, and now CEO of Pain Care Labs with a mission to eliminate unnecessary pain. She invented and patented VibraCool, vibrating cryotherapy to treat tendonitis and decrease opioid use, and her Buzzy device has been used to control needle pain for over 32 million needle procedures. She has been named a healthcare game-changer, healthcare transformer and most innovative CEO of the year. In this episode, we discuss the topic of pain management using tools and techniques, including vibration, heat, cold and mindset. Over to Dr. Baxter. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I'm delighted to welcome Dr. Amy Baxter to the podcast. Dr. Baxter, how are you? Amy 01:41 I am doing wonderfully this afternoon for me and morning for you. Stu 01:45 Yes. Yeah. Connecting via the internet once again. Thank you so much for sharing some of your time today. But, first up, for all those that may not be familiar with you or your work, I'd love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself, please. Amy 01:58 Sure. I am a pediatric emergency doctor by training. I did most of my clinical work in any areas of suffering. So I did a child abuse fellowship, I did pediatrics, I did research in nausea, I invented the BARF scale for children with cancer to be able to say, "That barfing face, that's the one I feel like." Now I am a full-time CEO of a medical device company that blocks out sharp pain. Stu 02:27 Wow, fantastic. Well, interesting topic then because pain is very personal, it's very unique to the individual. I guess first question then when talking about pain, many of us will be subject to pain throughout our days, weeks, lives, whether it be headache, sports injury, leading to perhaps more serious complications where pain is involved. How might we know if our pain is normal, i.e., "Oh, it's just a headache," or we should see a medical professional? Due to unforeseen technical issues, we've had to postpone today's originally-scheduled podcast episode. Here is a rebroadcast of one of our top podcasts of 2019, in case you missed it! The following podcast is for informational purposes only, and is not intended as medical advice. Please contact your health-care professional with any health-related questions. At CES® 2019, in Las Vegas, earlier this year, we met a physician who'd made an exciting discovery. [powerpoint] Dr. Amy Baxter, CEO of PainCareLabs, had discovered that vibration--plus heat, or cold--was an effective pain reliever. And she'd used that finding in her invention of several portable devices to empower patients to manage pain--without drugs. Dr. Baxter, who is both a pediatric emergency physician and a pain researcher, is currently continuing her research studies. We talked onsite at CES® 2019's startup area, Eureka Park®, about the story of her devices, Buzzy®, VibraCool® and new device DuoTherm®, and how they work to alleviate chronic pain. On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Dr. Baxter’s devices work to block pain; How she first came up with the concept behind her VibraCool® and Buzzy® products (and the newest device, DuoTherm®); What her innovator’s journey was like, from that “aha!” moment in 2004 to today; Dr. Baxter’s background, as a medical professional, and her previous research work; Why vibration works as a potent recovery tool; How we react differently to chronic pain in the United States, as opposed to other countries (and how men and women react differently); Why mental focus can be instrumental in blocking chronic pain; The mindset, behind both art and science, that leads to innovation; Dr. Baxter’s vision for the future, with Buzzy, Vibracool, and future research and development.
In this health supplier segment, pediatric emergency physician and pain specialist, Dr. Amy Baxter discusses the barriers to effective non-opioid pain management. She has given up her practice to focus on devices she has invented to block out pain. The Buzzy helps to block needle pain for children and now devices for adult pain, VibraCool, and DuoTherm, the latter due in the fall of 2019. She is passionate about changing the pain treatment paradigm to include proven technologies like hers – and other non-pharma modalities - for the benefit of physicians, patient, and society as a whole. The following is for informational purposes only, and is not intended as medical advice. Please contact your healthcare professional with any medical questions. PainCareLabs CEO Dr. Amy Baxter has found that technology can relieve pain--without drugs. Specifically, her research has shown that vibrations, plus a sensation of heat or cold, make a big difference. As a result, she's developed numerous portable drug-free devices. The goal: to empower patients, while relieving pain non-invasively. Meanwhile, Dr. Baxter, who is both a pediatric emergency physician and a pain researcher, is continuing her research studies. At CES® 2019, she was on site in the Eureka Park® startup area. And she was demonstrating her pain-relief innovations. Buzzy® is a needle-procedure pain blocker that uses cold and vibration. VibraCool®, according to its website, activates the body's natural nerve-blocking response. It also increases blood flow, to stimulate healing. Currently, approximately 5000 medical facilities are using Buzzy®, and it's being put to use in 29 countries. What's most exciting, though, is the way Vibracool® and Buzzy® (and now, new device DuoTherm®) are empowering individuals to overcome chronic pain. Dr. Baxter talked about the circumstances that led her to create her noninvasive pain-relief technologies, shared some of the differences between her findings and the drug-centered way the medical field has traditionally approached pain management--and previewed what's next! On this edition of Over Coffee®, you will hear: How Dr. Baxter's devices work to block pain; How she first came up with the concept behind her VibraCool® and Buzzy® products (and the newest device, DuoTherm®); What her innovator's journey was like, from that "aha!" moment in 2004 to today; Dr. Baxter's background, as a medical professional, and her previous research work; Why vibration works as a potent recovery tool; How we react differently to chronic pain in the United States, as opposed to other countries (and how men and women react differently); Why mental focus can be instrumental in blocking chronic pain; The mindset, behind both art and science, that leads to innovation; Dr. Baxter's vision for the future, with Buzzy, Vibracool, and future research and development.
