Gary Roberson is a native of Medina County and grew up hunting on the family ranch between Devine and Yancey. Armed with a Model 94 Winchester, Roberson killed his first whitetail while hunting by himself at age seven and began calling critters when he was ten years old. After fifteen years in the banking industry, Roberson decided that he would rather chase four legged coyotes than two legged ones, so he and his wife Deb purchased Burnham Brothers Game Calls in 1991.While Gary has hunted and outfitted for whitetail deer, elk, turkey, and mule deer, he considers chasing mountain lions with hounds and calling coyotes his favorite hunting opportunities. His calling expertise has been well documented in outdoor magazines such as Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, Predator Extreme, and numerous TV shows. In 1992, Roberson produced “Calling All Varmints”, a “how to” video on calling predators, and collaborated with Mossy Oak to produce “Eyes Front”, a series of five calling videos. In 2006, Gary and longtime friend, Brian Hawkins produced “Catastrophic”, the most popular predator calling video of all time.Roberson worked with Savage Arms to develop the MODEL 10 PREDATOR HUNTER, Ruger in designing their line of predator rifles and with Nikon Sport Optics to produce the COYOTE SPECIAL riflescope, products specific for the predator calling game.Roberson is host of the wildly successful TV show “Carnivore”, which is airing for its eleventh season on Pursuit Channel. Gary is also a staff writer for The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters and in 2020 with a little prompting from Miss Deb, wrote “Eyes Front…Sixty Years of Hunting the Hunters.”Roberson is a Pro Staff member for Mossy Oak, Ruger, Trijicon, Hornady, and TRHP Outdoors and lives by the philosophy that “he who hunts the most, hunts the best”.
Today we have journalist Gary Taubes making a repeat appearance on STEM-Talk to discuss his new book, “The Case for Keto: Rethinking Weight Control and the Science and Practice of Low-Carb/High-Fat Eating.” Our interview with Gary in 2016, episode 37, followed the release of his book, “The Case Against Sugar,” which went on to become a New York Times best seller. “The Case for Keto” is Gary's fourth book about diet and chronic disease. Gary made national headlines in 2002 when he wrote an article for the New York Times Magazine challenging the low-fat orthodoxy that had held sway in America since the 1970s. In the article, titled “What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie,” Gary wrote that perhaps Dr. Robert Atkins with his Atkins Diet was correct in suggesting that it's not fat that makes us fat, but carbohydrates. Our conversation with Gary covered a lot of ground, and we have divided his interview into two parts. Today we talk to Gary about his reasons for writing the new book and how opinions on a low-carb and high-fat diet have changed over the past 20 years. In part two of our interview with Gary, we dig deeper into his efforts to set the record straight about the role of diet and weight control in preventing chronic diseases, as well as the role that diet plays in helping people improve their health spans. Gary turned to journalism back in the 1970s after receiving his master's degree in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University. Today, he continues to practice journalism and is the founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. Show notes: 00:03:43 Dawn welcomes Gary back to STEM-Talk and asks how things went for him as a writer during COVID-19 and the lockdowns. 00:04:24 Dawn gives some background on Gary's new book The Case for Keto, which is his fourth book to follow and expand upon a 2002 article he wrote for the New Times Magazine titled, “What if It's All Been a Big Fat Lie?” She asks Gary if he ever anticipated writing four books about the relationship between diet and chronic disease when the article came out 20 years ago. 00:06:09 Ken mentions that Gary's New York Times Magazine article questioned the effectiveness of low-fat diets, which the government's dietary guidelines had been recommending since the late 1970s. Ken adds that almost overnight Gary become public health enemy number one, and asks Gary if he expected so much pushback as a result of the article. 00:10:53 Dawn describes how the release of Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma, which draws on work by both Gary and Dr. Atkins, seemed to change consumers' eating habits. Dawn then asks Gary if he remembers seeing or being surprised by the disappearance of pasta and bread from restaurants and grocery shelves. 00:14:41 Ken notes that in the blurb Michael Pollan wrote for the jacket of Gary's 2007 book, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Michael said the book would change the way people think about eating. While Gary's work did not end up changing national heart, health and diet guidelines, low-carb and ketogenic diets have become quite popular since then. Ken asks Gary what he thinks is driving this interest in keto. 00:19:41 Dawn describes Gary's 2011 best seller Why We Get Fat as a condensed summary of the research contained in Good Calories, Bad Calories combined with new research on hormonal-based weight gain. She mentions Gary's argument that the medical community and the federal government has misinterpreted scientific data on nutrition over the past several decades in developing a U.S. food policy that recommends a low-fat diet. Dawn notes there has recently been a steady accumulation of studies supporting carbohydrate restriction and the safety of saturated fat since Gary's first two books came out. She asks Gary if this trend has been rewarding to watch. 00:22:47 Ken mentions that Gary's new book, The Case for Keto, is an attempt to rectify decades-old misunderstandings people have had ab...

Eamon shares his embarrassing experiences throughout the years of participating in the open, While Gary is looking for a new challenge this year by calling out the famous Kevin Claxton in what can be only described as a terrible impression of a Dublin accent.
On a warm summer evening in the friendly town of Beckley, West Virginia on August 26, 1981, twenty seven year old school teacher Cynthia Jane Miller was over the moon with excitement for her wedding the following day to police officer Gary O'Neal. The two were very much in love and had been anxiously waiting for Friday, August 27th, to exchange their vows and begin life together as husband and wife. While Gary visited with his father the evening of August 26th to go over wedding details, Cynthia decided to stay at home and tend to last minute work related activities so as not to have it hanging over her on their one weekend of wedded bliss. Suddenly in the very home which she and Gary planned to make a lifetime of beautiful memories together, darkness cloaked its evil upon Cynthia when the devil in the flesh came calling and saw to it she would never celebrate her 28th birthday nor her wedding the following evening. Gunned down in the living room of her very own home which investigators described as a slaughter up close and personal. But who would want to harm and kill this much loved, compassionate, joyful and talented young woman who was respected and well liked by all who knew her? The perpetrator of this heinous crime has never been brought to justice in the 38 years since her life was taken away from her. No sign of forced entry into the home. Nothing was disturbed. No robbery, no struggle, no sexual assault. The only evidence left behind was Cynthia’s blood spattered clothing. It’s as if the killer vanished into thin air. All that remains are the broken hearts and spirits of family, friends, and all who knew her. Law Enforcement has had very little to work on in the 38 years since this cold-blooded monster took the life of this young woman with so much promise and dreams yet to fulfill. The Beckley WV Police Department has never given up on Cynthia’s case. Generations of police investigators have combed through the massive amount of information meticulously collected and maintained throughout the years. There have been persons of interests since the original investigation that still remain on police radar but there is no binding evidence to tie them to the murder....at least not yet. With good old fashion police work and the advancement of forensic science technology to now include genetic genealogy, the criminals days in the sun are running out, and many are now being apprehended in very cold cases that were once deemed hopeless. Investigators believe Cynthia’s case is solvable with the right piece of missing information or piece of evidence. Someone knows something and it’s time to step out from the shadows and do the right thing by coming forward, letting go of the burden and, in doing so, giving Cynthia the peace she so much deserves. As we discuss and examine Cynthia's life and the night of her brutal murder, perhaps you will be the one to help Crack This Case!Join me, Sharon McHenry Power, the Host of Crack This Crack, to hear Cynthia’s life story of 27 years and to discuss and examine the mystery surrounding her murder. Let’s spread awareness of Cynthia’s relatively unknown case and start shaking things up. Gary Brackett is the President & CEO of Brackett Restaurant Group, a food service catering company that also includes two restaurant brands: CharBlue Steak & Seafood fine dining and Stacked Pickle casual dining. Prior to founding Brackett Restaurant Group, Gary was a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. During his time with the Colts, he served as defensive captain, was a starter in their Super Bowl XLI win over the Chicago Bears, and earned the title of defensive MVP for the team. After retiring from the Colts in 2010, Brackett went on to serve as a sports commentator, which he still does in addition to his role at Brackett Restaurant Group. Disclaimer: Gary Brackett is a client of the Law Office of Josh F. Brown. Both parties willingly participated in the interview with no incentive and strive to tell Gary’s fascinating story and highlight his brand in an impartial way. Key Takeaways: [0:22] Today’s episode features Gary Brackett, a former NFL player turned franchisor who owns Brackett Restaurant Group. Within that company, he founded Stacked Pickle, a casual dining franchise that has taken off in the Midwest and is looking to expand nationally. [2:28] Josh welcomes Gary to Franchise Euphoria. [3:15] Gary Brackett is a New Jersey native who has climbed the ranks in all aspects of life with his unwavering work ethic. [13:04] For individuals lucky enough to break into pro-sports, they sometimes achieve success and get “lazy” but Gary has always had a strong drive to continually set goals and achieve them. [16:05] Gary semi-knew that once he retired from football he wanted to do something in the restaurant space and make a quality investment. [17:26] While Gary considers himself a foodie, what really got him into the restaurant business was the recognition that people always approached him while he was out to eat. To maintain his brand, he started his company where he hoped people would come for his name but stay for the food. [18:45] It has been helpful for Gary having a hand in two different types of restaurant spaces to give him exposure to how to run each system to its greatest potential. [20:24] It has been a fruitful partnership with Jeremiah Hamman in running CharBlue since Hamman has a lifetime of experience in the food service industry and Brackett has the organizational tactics and pursuance to get a well-oiled, organized system. [21:57] One big way Stacked Pickle makes itself stand out as a franchise is offering low rates for those looking to purchase a franchise. The way he does this is helping his franchisees find quality, second-generation locations to build out of to keep things cost effective. [22:40] Another way Stacked Pickle stands out is by having a value-priced menu for a quality product. [24:01] Gary has found that the work ethic he developed in the NFL has transferred over to the restaurant industry. The desire to never wanting to settle for being average fuels his drive and keeps his business on a positive growth trajectory. [25:40] A large challenge Gary faces in the restaurant industry is the competition; new restaurants are popping up every day, so they have to be creative in their promotional endeavors. [28:11] Gary’s large goal for Stacked Pickle is to grow 5-10 stores a year for the next 3-4 years, but he aims to obtain quality franchisees and be able to methodically plan out their success with them. [29:28] To learn more about the Stacked Pickle franchise, head over to www.Stackedpickle.com or www.BuildthePickle.com. Additionally, Gary’s book about how to build a championship restaurant is due out in the next six months. The Tangent - 113: Picnic In Poundtown The episode this week is Garyless, but not to worry, the guys do what they can to make it like old times. And but that they mean talking even more. First up is Stephen. Besides his usual Breath of the Wild talk (which we get to later), he has 3 iPhone/mobile games. Hyoerburner is a on rails Starfox-type game. You move by touching the screen to avoid obstacles. Pretty simple. Skydancer is a Temple Run-like game, but with the challenge of jumping from platform to platform and not falling to your death from the sky. Then, Polytopia. Think of Age of Empires or Civilization, but without the battles and you only have 30 turns to complete tasks and get the highest score possible. It helps that all the games were free. Next up is, Anthony. He played, What Remains of Edith Finch this week, and by the looks of it, got duped into thinking it was a horror game. It is not. What it is is a 2 - 3 hour walking game that costs $20.00. What's actually a horror game is Outlast 2, which Anthony also played this week. Brian and Justin want no part of this game. Especially when Justin remembers it's the game where you walk around with just a camera in the dark. Then speaking of Justin, he talks more about The Witcher III. He's still enjoying the game. He finds the more time he puts in the more he really appreciates it. Can't blame him. Lastly, Brian's turn. He's got Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, a remaster of the 1989 Sega Master System game. The game is difficult. Very difficult. It doesn't tell you anything. However, he loves the fact you can switch between the remake and the retro graphics and music of the original. He wishes more games would do that. Then the all of us talk about our time with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. Keep your eye out for our Let's Play of it on our YouTube channel. The Drunken News: Game Show Edition keeps the points mostly positive this week. Brian had his 30 seconds to rant and he made sure to take it out on Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. While Gary's game was without a doubt on point. After the second watch, it is confirmed that this episode was AMAZING!!! While Gary is convinced R+L=J means Rhaegar + Lyanna =Jon. Nicole is still questioning the R. If Rhaegar is Jon's father, does this make Daenerys his aunt??? Sorry everyone who was waiting on this love connection. The women of Game of Thrones are kicking ass and taking numbers! With Cersei now the queen of the seven kingdoms, this put the women at the top of the food chain! Thank you for listening!
