Thursday night could see two Irish clubs qualify for the group phase of a European competition for the first time in the one season. One half of that quest - Shamrock Rovers' 2nd leg of their Conference League playoff with Santa Clara - will be live on Off The Ball. Ahead of that game, OTB's Nathan Murphy spoke to Rovers manager Stephen Bradley and midfielder Danny Mandroiu.
Our fourth author in a row is Brian MacConville with his children's book 'Hoopbee and the Hoops' and his experience in the Azores to see a famous Rovers result in Europe. We remember the great Tommy Hamilton and look ahead to a huge night in Tallaght on Thursday.

No Rovers goals to talk about in Kosovo or Galway but you'll get a live report from Gerry Matthews in Pristina, and hear from Barry McCarthy (O'Neill family, Templeogue United donations) and Seamus Leavy (History of Longford Town book) before Graham Merrigan (Shamrock Rovers DAO) talks his new role and the 336th episode of 'What's The Story? Podcast'. Rookie numbers.
This week on Bludging on the Blindside, Roy and HG discuss the rugby league runners - are they legit? Plan your life around rugby league, Alice Springs centre of excellence, the try celebration approval process, Runner agents - Is this something to consider? Billy Coleman the strongman of Lithgow, Horse racing base camp and where are the boxing TAFE courses?
This week's special guest host is a club legend, four-in-a-row and FAI Cup winning captain Ronan Finn, who is in his second season at UCD to pursue a Master's Degree in Sports Management. Finner helps review a boring St Joseph's game, which his daughter enjoyed at least, and a big win over Derry in Tallaght on Sunday that put Rovers 10 points clear. We look ahead to Thursday's tie with Kosovo Football expert Eljon, and potentially a trip to Portugal where Ronan made his European debut with Sporting Fingal in 2010, and also nearly cost Rovers the title that season. We reminisce about Belgrade and White Hart Lane, his League of Ireland debut for the college in 2005 and scoring against the Hoops as a teenager. Ronan talks his long wait for a first European goal, Pico taking the armband and equalling his European appearance record, Rory Gaffney's greatness, Burkey's fitness, the gaffer's half-time team talks and "the turn" when results haven't yet come. We discuss his relationship with Stephen Bradley and the senior leadership group within the squad, winning the Cup and lifting the league trophy with young Josh, and making the move from centre-mid to right-wing back, all the way up to his last goal for Rovers against Bohs in front of the south stand and the difficult decision to leave the club. There's also a chat about the dip in crowds this summer, extending the league season, doing punditry for our Conference League Phase games on TV last season, his ambitions in football after he retires, and, of course, fishing.
A bonus episode with Con Murphy reading a piece on Kosovan football during the Yugoslav war, James Moor talking about his book 'Grobar', in which he spent the 2011/12 season following FK Partizan home and away, including Rovers' famous night in Belgrade, and a re-airing of our Mick Kearin interview from 2021, after Jim Conroy pays tribute to 'Tiger', his favourite player growing up.
This week's guest co-hosts are the Staffords, Ciarán and his dad Ben to talk a club record away win in Gibraltar, which we all barstooled at the Irishtown House, favourite European memories together, the Pride of Ringsend and more. Tommy Tormey files his live report from The Rock, there's Conor Foley on Glenmalure Rovers' new season, and on the 20th anniversary of when the members took ownership of the club for the first time, examiner Neil Hughes and former player Keith Doyle take us back to the drama of the 2005 season and the High Court.
See what a local historian thinks about James Strang as we tour the town of St James on Beaver Island, Michigan. Beaver Island: A Journey Through Time and Tyranny in Lake Michigan Welcome to Beaver Island, often called "America's Emerald Isle," a fascinating gem in Lake Michigan with a history as rich and diverse as its landscape. If you've ever wondered about year-round island life, a unique Mormon kingdom, or the rise of an Irish community, you're in the right place! Island Life: Year-Round Charm and Seasonal Bustle Beaver Island is unique as the only island in Lake Michigan with a year-round population. While around 600-800 people call it home in the winter, the population swells to 3,000-4,000 during the summer months. Access to the island is primarily by private boat or air service, as ferries only run until mid-December. The main community, St. James, named after James Jesse Strang himself, is where most businesses are concentrated, including the year-round community center, taverns like the Shamrock bar and restaurant, a motel, and a hardware store that also houses a gift shop and vet clinic. Many other businesses, like some restaurants and a bicycle/boat rental shop, are open only in the summer. Historically, the island's economy relied heavily on commercial fishing, with fish being salted or iced down and sent via ferry to Charlevoix for further rail transport to cities like Indianapolis or Chicago. Hotels also played a main role in the economy for many years. Unforgettable Reign of King Strang A significant chapter in Beaver Island's history revolves around James Jesse Strang, a controversial figure who established a Mormon colony here. Strang arrived on the island around 1847-1848, with his colony reaching approximately 1,500 people by the time of his death in 1856. Strang was an ambitious leader, and his people surveyed Beaver Island for the first time in 1848. He named the town of St. James after himself and began building a highway, the King's Highway, also named after himself. His colony was so established that they even had a daily newspaper, the only one north of Grand Rapids at the time. However, Strang's rule was often described as tyrannical by the tour guide. He quickly made enemies with his policies: He mandated that anyone wishing to stay on the island had to become a Mormon or pay him a tax or leave. This drove many people off the island, though some reluctantly converted because they had nowhere else to go. He authorized his followers to steal fish from other fishermen's nets and even take items from the homes of fishermen who were out at sea, according to the guide. Initially, Strang was against plural marriages, but a couple of years after arriving, he embraced polygamy, taking four more wives after his first wife, Mary, left him and returned to Wisconsin. He was also known for peculiar practices, such as having his people build a dock just a few inches under the water in Font Lake (named for baptismal font) so he could appear to be "walking on water" when baptizing his followers. Strang also left a lasting mark on the island's geography by naming several places with biblical references. Examples include: Font Lake, where baptisms took place. Mount Pisgah, a hill named after the biblical Mount Pisgah from which Jesus preached. It became a popular spot for people to climb. A lake on the south side of the island was called Lake Jaz or Lake Galilee, corresponding to the Sea of Galilee in the Holy Land. Interestingly, Strang was a well-educated man who passed the Michigan bar exam and could practice law. This legal expertise proved useful,

This week's Star 99.9 Connecticut Humane Society Pet of the Week is Shamrock a 1-year-old tuxedo cat who's as charming as her name! Shamrock is sweet, super friendly, and absolutely bursting with potential. She came from a family that was a bit overwhelmed with pets, so she's now on the lookout for a home where she can truly shine and get all the love and lap time she deserves. While she's still young and full of playful energy, she's already proving herself to be a total cuddlebug in the making. Think you could use a little extra luck (and purring) in your life? It's the 4th of July, so instead of three match reports we have three American themed interviews. Former Rovers midfielder Jamie Duffy, born in Texas, raised in Tallaght and living in Hollywood, talks the 2006 First Division win, a life-threatening illness, his boy band and appearance on X-Factor. Then, another remarkable story in Cincinnati, Orlando and Nashville where Dylan Connolly, another Dubliner and Rovers supporter, was Ireland's only representative at the Club World Cup in the States this summer with Auckland City. Dylan tells us about life in New Zealand and swapping the Leinster Senior League for games with Bayern Munich, Benfica and Boca Juniors on the world stage. The last segment is Brendan Crowley from 'Sports Books Reviews', a Limerick native who gives his personal take on the sports books he's read and written about in his newsletter all the way from his new home in the U.S. capitol, Washington D.C.

In this episode, the host delves into the alarming rise of 'pig butchering' scams, a form of fraud that preys on vulnerable and trusting individuals, often leaving them financially and emotionally devastated. Galway United secured their fourth consecutive away draw against SSE Airtricity League Men's Premier Division leaders Shamrock Rovers on Friday (30th May 2025). As a result, United stay in seventh position and are now 39 games without victory over the Hoops, who remain top of the table with a six point advantage. Galway Bay FM's match commentary team were Jonathan Higgins and Johnny Ward. == Galway United's next game is away to Derry City on Friday, 13th June. Kick-off at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium is 7.45pm and we'll have LIVE coverage on 'Over The Line' on Galway Bay FM.
We have Aaron McEneff's late winner in Derry and Irish managers winning league titles across the continent to talk about. No, not Robbie Keane - our author series continues with Sue O'Connell and 'The Man Who Saved Barcelona FC': The Extraordinary Life of Patrick O'Connell', the Dubliner who led Real Betis, in search of their first European trophy on Wednesday night, to their only La Liga in 1935.
We've got IKEA, haircuts, tonks and three wins out of three to talk about (first hour) before the conclusion of our Goodbye Goodison series with Robert Goggins, Robbie Gaffney, and Rovers and Everton fans Paul Clayton, Anto Matthews & Craig Mahon (Members Corner) and Dean O'Reilly.
Galway have made two changes from their league final defeat for Saturday's Glen Dimplex All-Ireland championship opener against Dublin (24th May 2025). Portumna's Alannah Kelly comes into the defence, while Shamrocks' Ally Hesnan is named in midfield. Leading up to the game, and before the monumental Special Congress that saw 98% of delegates vote to allow shorts or skorts to be worn in competitive action, Galway manager Cathal Murray spoke to Galway Bay FM's Tommy Devane. == This is an intriguing affair as Dublin have consistently pushed Galway to the wire in recent seasons. There was six points between them in Kilbeacanty last March but after starting with a draw against Tipperary, the Dubs failed to secure another positive result and were relegated from Division 1A of the League. Galway beat Cork in the final group game to book their place in the decider but never showed up, with the Rebels exacting swift and severe retribution with the silverware on the line. The lack of provincial games for the westerners has often led to a slow championship start for the Tribeswomen so Dublin will look to rattle them early but last year's All-Ireland finalists will be favoured to prevail. Throw-in at Kenny Park, Athenry on Saturday is 4pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM.
